I didn't pay to go into the museum so I can't speak to that part. I will say however that the overall vibe of the place is pretty cool. Perhaps a bit commercial, but if you are coming to a SUPERMAN STATUE, that's to be expected right?

If you can't make it to the Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota, why not stop into Superman's pretend base of operations? The only thing missing is a fake Daily Planet building!

The better half claims the local college has a tradition of "Thumping" Supes on his Red underwear, but I declined to participate in this activity.

God bless 'em, the people of Metropolis have a fine sense of humor, and they are milking this Superman shtick for every tourist dollar they can.

If you are in the vicinity of Metropolis, it is well-worth pulling off the expressway for a few minutes to honor Truth, Justice and the American Way.

Because you can fit the whole town in your pocket, this is kind of a review of the city as much as the museum.  The museum is one guy's obsession and contains more Superman crap than you can imagine.  If it was ever manufactured with an S-shield on it, they've got it.  Frankly, I'm not that invested in Superman that I get psyched to see the original comic books, but give them your damn three bucks and walk through the museum.  Support the local economy.

Enjoy the full Metropolis experience - buy a postcard, take your photo with the giant Superman statue (easily located with the "Giant Superman statue straight ahead" signs every few blocks).

They have added a Lois Lane statue about two blocks from the giant Superman statue because they want you to walk through their commercial district (mostly second hand shops) - but it's a block and a half, so you may as well.  Fun fact: apparently Superman works out at Thor's Gym.

Fun fact #2: the Metropolis newspaper is actually called the Planet, but due to the death of print media, it is only printed weekly.

My husband really enjoyed this stop, although it wasn't exactly my cup of tea. We got there late, so everything was closed. But it was a neat little detour. It is worth a stop, if for nothing else, but photo ops.

This is a neat little place with obviously Superman memorabilia, but some other classics as well. Stop just outside in the town square to pose with the giant statue (as we did on our wedding day - look at my profile pic, you can just make out the man of steel's feet) or take some pics with some character cutouts or make a quick change in the phone booth. Anyway, loads of fun!

    This town is fucked up.

Hannibal, Missouri revolves around Mark Twain.

Springfield, Illinois is all about Abraham Lincoln.

Metropolis, Illinois is the only city I have ever been to that is entirely centered around a fictional character.

That being said, located just across the street from the GIANT SUPERMAN STATUE is this little place, the Superman Museum.  Admission is $3 and worth every penny.  The amount of ridiculous memorabilia crammed into such a small place is almost unhealthy but not quite.

Our family took a detour on our road trip to visit this museum.  The collection is interesting and the kids loved the statue and photo-ops.  Museum/store customer service leaves lots to be desired.   We practically had to bag them to take our money so we could go into the museum.
We were in the store for several minutes without anyone acknowledging our presence.  An older man walked another man around the store showing him different "new" items.  He barely even said "excuse me" as he brushed my six-year old son aside to show his potential customer a new item.
A lady followed a small child around and finally went to stand behind the counter.  As we stood at the gated entrance to the museum, the lady continued to play with the child and look in every direction but ours.
Eventually, we were able to get her to take our money and allow us to enter - but only after my 3 year old decided to crawl under the gate.
If you're lucky enough to get past this point, you're sure to find a myriad of Superman memorabilia.
