I absolutely love Super King!! When I first moved to LA I was always shopping at Ralphs because it was the closest grocery store near me. After discovering about this place from my boyfriend, I fell in love!!

At Ralph's my weekly bill on groceries was around $50-$75 depending on how much I planned to cook that week...Super King....$10-$20, MAX! It's amazing how much you save from shopping here. The produce is all fresh and super yum! It really tastes like it just got picked from the farm that day. The deli is one of the highlights. The meat is fresh and the deli is kept clean! The assortments of meat, cheeses, and olives and what not is extensive, and I've had nothing but a great experience.

I will say if you do your shopping on weekday evenings, it does get a bit crazy. The deli usually has a line, but its the number/ticket system. They usually have quite a large staff too, so you aren't waiting for too long. Just be patient in all the chaos of carts everywhere.

My fiance and I are about cheap and fresh produce.  Let me tell you, we've been too many market around Glendale, but nothing beats Super King. Everything is CHEAP and FRESH! I love their nuts section!! You can find almost anything at this market. We buy our meats, fish and vegetables here. Our shopping cart is always full but never felt like we overpaid for anything.

    Pros: fresh everything! Cheap!

Cons: they have a huge parking lot but not enough for the numbers of costumers at this store. Expect to be standing in line to get your products. Many many old people with food stamps shop here.

We love this market so much, we disregard the packed parking lot and standing in line with senior citizens. I usually start a conversation with one of the seniors and time goes by faster. You'd be surprised what you can learn from these old folks. I never knew about pickly pears, now I eat them all the time :)

I did not give it five stars due to the crowdiness factor but definitely will shop here all the time.

Our first trip to this location (we usually go to the one by the gym) and we were a little nervous that it'd be outrageously packed and hard to find parking (we were warned by friends).

Well, we found great parking and there weren't that many people.  We weren't waiting in line for forever and were able to go to every aisle.

Prices are outstanding and definitely some of their stock-prices are cheaper than Ralph's sale prices.  We stocked up on 72 items and paid $76.  And now have food for at least two weeks.

This one seems to have more Armenian produce than the one in Pasadena, and I was actually surprised to see so many Armenians there.  But very nice, neat and well-organized store.

The fruits were on sale for an amazing price.  I even picked up some extra goodies for my dad!  And was able to buy a bunch of stuff for work.

Want a quick price comparison?  They have 50ct foam plates for $0.99 right now.  Ralph's cheapest option (as of yesterday) was a 150ct for $4.49.  Staples Advantage (cheaper than Costco) sells a 500ct for $35.71.  SOOOOO - SK costs $0.02/plate, Ralph's costs $0.03 (SALE PRICE not regular price) and Staples sells it for a whopping $0.07.  Now that may not seem like a lot, but if we're buying in the thousands of plates per year, then that actually makes a little bit of spare change now doesn't it?

Sooo, bring a good amount of money, spend it here, have a fully stocked house and eat forever (or at least for a few weeks!)

The place has a killer produce and meat department and you know the stuff is fresh from the hoards of people that go there so it's a good turn over.

They have some middle eastern ingredients if you're into that sorta thing, got some awesome greek feta for under $5. Scored!

Sell hookahs and liquor on your way out. Win win

Uhhh ya it's crowded but the lines move really fast and parking kinda sucks but the produce is worth it alone.

I like this place!  I do not like the parking lot though.  They have all kinds of stuff here.  The alcohol selection is pretty good.  Most of the booze there is at a really good price with a wide assortment.  I appreciate that they had a big collection of vodkas.  Unfortunately I chose to go there a couple of days before Christmas and there were hoards of people there.  Overall, I was impressed with their prices and assortment of Middle Eastern/ Hispanic.

I would definitely recommend this place for produce and/or acohol.

If you want evidence of how cheap the produce is here, behold my receipt:

Green and cabbage $.99 for 3 lbs
    Carrots $.33 for 1 lb
Roma tomatoes $.99 for 2 lbs
Grape tomatoes $.99 for 2 pints
    Jalapeno peppers $.69/lb
    Persian cucumbers $1.49/lb
    Golden beets $1.69/lb
    Red chard $.99 a bunch
    Fenugreek $.69 a bunch
2 bunches of mint for $.99
Yellow chili peppers $.99 for 2 lbs
Red beets $.99 for 2 lbs
    Sweet lemons $.99/lb
    Blood red oranges $.69/lb
    Blackberries $.99 a pint
    Blueberries $1.69 a pint
    Golden raspberries $1.29 a pint
Key limes $1.29i for 2 lbs

Tip:  If you see something you like among the produce bins outside the front door, get it before you go in.  These are not just overflow of the same fruits and vegetables inside.

It's true what they say about the crowds and the parking, but to Super King's credit they play kickass 80s tunes (like The Bangles and the Go Go's) that will power you through your shopping.  Hopefully you won't get a cart with a wonky wheel like I did and end up grazing everyone.  Big thumbs up for the assortment of chili peppers, stocking dandelion greens (my favorite and usually hard to find), and the variety of cheap herbs including fenugreek and red basil.  Oh and selling carrots with the green tops still on.  One thing I missed was kale.  They were restocking but I was too impatient to wait, so I cannot say whether they sell curly or lacinato kale, or both.  They had collards but if there were mustard or turnip greens I didn't see any.

Fans of Middle Eastern food would be happy with the GIGANTIC cans of grapeseed oil and black olives, pomegranate molasses, tahini, and eggplant caviar.  The bakery was loaded with Russian black bread, lavash, baklava, and savory Armenian pastries which could be ordered and eaten in a little side area with tables.  There were some Mexican pastry breads behind the case too.

I didn't give 5 stars because I didn't purchase any dry/canned items, anything from the freezer, or the meat/fish counter.  ZERO eye contact from the cashier too.  But I don't care about the crowds.  My wallet is thanking me.

super crowded, Super Crowded!!!!!  SUPER CROWDED!!  I've never been to a market in LA this crowded and there's a reason for that.   Super crowded in my book means really good.  I am a huge fan of Middle Eastern and Mexican cuisine.   This is the best  market for Middle Eastern and Mexican groceries.  The meats section rocks!!!!  I can get cuts of meat here such as whole brisket (30+ lbs), lamb shank, , 3" pork chops (cut to size),  large steaks for the grill and marinated meats.   Plus this market possibly has the largest selection of basmati rice, raw nuts, yoghurt,  breads and other raw beans (lentils, garbanzos, kidney, black-eyed) I've seen anywhere in LA.  I like the European/Armenian deli counter selections.  It's is a real European deli.  The cheeses selections are incredible as are the olive selections.  You will go into a bit of happy shock when you see the produce.

I can get freshly made salsa (in many versions, hot to smoked chiles), the best tortillas, crema and cheese and I'm set.  Well, I've come back to Coke all because Mexican Coke is available here (not the drug), sans high fructose corn syrup.  Some of the other Mexican sodas rock too like tamarind, orange (again, no HFCS).

**This market also carries my favorite imported Syrian sweets, Abou Rashed, that I discovered here about  2 years ago: incredible imported varieties of baklava, semiramis, bird's nest, ......  with no preservatives.   They're about $12-35/box and very much well worth it.   If you haven't had Syrian sweets, now is the time :)) I prefer the boxes with baklava desserts not the cookies.   It's a great treat.

And why should you test your agoraphobia here??  It's frighteningly cheap!!!  LOL!!

You've been warned!!!  I love the frenzy at this store though, it's like shopping in Manhattan or any large city in Asia!

Note:  Best time to go?  One hour before closing and from before 2pm.

I've had it with this place.  I've given it time, but I officially quit.  I always shop for produce here, but every single time that I've been here in the last 7 months, I NEVER get all my groceries placed in my cart by the bag boy.  The first few times I thought, "eh, I have bad luck" or "gosh, maybe I left it in my cart in the parking lot...but I swear I triple checked as usual".  But no, I kept coming, kept forgetting to pay close attention to my bags, and kept getting screwed out of my stuff.  For some odd reason, it was almost always my berries.  Approximately $10's worth of berries each time.

Last night I drew the final straw.  I paid close attention and noticed the cashier move some of groceries aside, NOT onto the conveyor belt that would lead it to the bag boy. I continuously stared at those groceries and she finally placed them on the conveyor.

Whatever, benefit of the doubt.  I pay, walk to my cart, and by this time, the bag boy was already long gone and left my cart trapped between 2 carts. Ok, whatever, I have hands I guess.  And just as I'm about to stroll away, my paranoia causes me to look all around again and BAM, what do I see??  My freakin' BERRIES, helplessly sitting in the bag area and NOT in my cart. I was THIS close to once again making my way home without all of my groceries.

Call it coincidence (6 times) or scam, but I'm sick of getting robbed and I'm sick of Super King.  I am never coming back and if you will continue to shop there (which I don't recommend), watch your back, because no one there is looking out for you.

I've heard about Super King for years, and always wanted to go see what all the fuss was about. I was a little leery after reading tales of ethnic women ramming me with their cart and stealing cucumbers out of my shopping basket. But despite the crowds, it was a relatively pain- and problem-free excursion.

We parked on the little side street that runs parallel to the parking lot, but once we walked across the street, there was plenty of spaces near the entrance.

The produce is indeed fresh, as exhibited by both color and quality, and after seeing the large boxes outside on pallets, I had to agree, beautiful to look at. I needed some celery, which didn't particularly impress me more than the usual stalk I'd buy, but I was impressed by the 33 cents price tag. If it goes limp in my fridge before I have time to eat it, I will not be shedding any tears.

If that is not an encouragement to eat more veggies, I don't know what is.

The meat selection and butcher shop is the largest I have ever seen in my life, and the amount of people waiting to purchase custom cuts is quite a sight to see.

The check-out went pretty fast, although I noticed there were no 12-items or less lanes here. I suppose if you're not  bulk shopper, you're in the minority.

I also appreciated the price tag on large vats of olive oil. We're talking a gas can size for like twenty bucks. And the grape seed oil is three times the amount for the cost that I'd spend at Trader Joe's.

I am told there is a fungus on next year's crop of olives which means you shouldn't spend much on olive oil since it'll affect the quality irregardless of brand. So if you want to stock up this year on the good stuff, this is the place to do it.

My husband and I do really prefer organic and grass-fed beef, for all the various health benefits, so I don't see this market becoming a part of our normal weekly shopping rotation. But if I require a specific cut of beef for a special recipe, and it's not part of my normal selection available for grass-fed meats, I would totally consider making a special trip here for it.

Although this is not one of the big supermarket chains, the interior is brightly lit, and well organized with a far more modern decor than I was expecting for a store of this type, which came as a pleasant surprise. And I liked the modern bazaar ambience.

Although it can be chaotic, the inventory itself is not a mess and doesn't involve searching for diamonds in the rough. You can actually get what you need, get through, and get out in a relatively decent amount of time.

The content smiles you see on the shoppers leaving the market are a testament to their level of customer satisfaction, which is no small achievement for businesses in this day and age.

I also appreciated that my bagger did not robotically force my celery into a plastic bag after telling them I had brought my own.

The employees in our lane were young, present and friendly, which was a nice change of pace from the typical chain.

Super King....all I can say is you are not in my neighborhood, but thinking of you warms my heart....

I used to come here for Nutella. The LA Weekly reported that this heavenly hazelnut concoction was cheaper here than anywhere else. Actually Costco sells it cheaper now!!!! I found that Super King had one of my favorite Ferrero hazelnut chocolate bars here too. Previously I thought I would never find them outside of Mexico. I love Middle Eastern food. They have Abali yogurt sodas here and kefir cheese too! Russian Borodinsky bread! Delicious Middle Eastern pizza shaped things with green stuff on top whose name I can't recall.... Amazing!

Super King is too good....maybe a little to good. So interested in having you save money they would even sell Armella to you....ugh!!!! Armella is Nutella's evil Turkish doppelganger. Stay far away, far away! I stood there staring at it wondering if I had found the deal of a lifetime. I finally took the leap of faith and picked one up. So did the Armando N. the Naco, who is a seasoned Super King connoisseur. Armella is really just pasty Nutella brown sugar with a light, almost too subtle, almost nonexistent taste of hazelnut. A travesty! If Nutella were served in Orwell's 1984 world - this is what it would taste like. It would be a deterrent to those would be romantics that would dream of having an ecstatic experience with a REAL Nutella crepe that would prove so so so ecstatic that they would serve it to their lover in a curio shop backroom somewhere. Armella is far more like a reminder of what Nutella looks like than what it tastes like. The container is even like the Nutella one.

    A Tale Of Super King:

Long ago I was stocking up on my Middle Eastern and Eastern European groceries back in the days I lived in Koreatown when all of a sudden - the lights went out! They went out throughout the market. This lasted for more than half an hour. All this time people began to mass around the registers in lines more confusing and more chaotic than those at the Mexico-USA border. I got into one of these lines somehow and was actually not too far from the register. It seemed like I would never leave this place. Then all of a sudden a guy in an Adidas sweatsuit from the "cradle of civilization" region of the world sneakily and quietly and all of a sudden appeared behind me and he was intently aiming for the nonexistent spot to squeeze into that was right in front of me in an entirely imaginary reality. I wonder how many irate customers he passed by. No one was saying anything till a lady behind called him out finally. Thankfully she saved me the time and effort and pain to call this guy out. She motioned a store employee to come over and the threat was ended fairly quick considering the guy was making a "Who me?" face....

Ah, Super King indeed....you have a dark side....

I felt like I fell into a rugby scrum from the moment I pulled into the parking lot.  The produce is very fresh looking and reasonably priced.

Due to the masses swarming around the building, it's a grab and go situation.  I really had little chance to get a good look at all they offered without feeling like I needed to get out of this human lemming cage, before I fell off a cliff.

The meat counter was brightly lit, appeared very clean and did not have the smell of old meat and blood.  The Gold standard for meat counters is Fareway Stores back in Iowa.  If you want to try some place a little closer, check out Midwestern Meats in Mesa, Az and then you will know what I am talking about.  I would give Super King a Silver Medal for quality of service and cleanliness.

If I can find an hour of the day, where it is not "Planet of the Apes" atmosphere, I would consider on coming back. again.

Anyone who complains about the parking, the lines, the wrangling with little middle eastern old ladies over cucumbers etc.... is a complete pussy. This is the single greatest super market in Los Angeles. I go for the meat mainly. It is the only place that has 8 - 10 full time butchers who will make any cut you want that isn't a total rip-off. Scratch that. The best prices on quality meats in the USA.

If you don't like hearing five different languages when you go shopping, stay in Brentwood. Gelson's is waiting for you.

Great liquor selection, BUT beware of the prices. For example, Tanqueray Gin cost $25.00. At CVS it costs $16.00. After you buy liquor, the receipt will tell you no returns or exchanges on liquor. Too late, you already bought it. Good price on produce, if you do not mind picking through all the supermarket rejects. Almost everything else is higher priced than many other supermarkets.

Just a WARNING, know your prices and quality, before you shop at Super King Markets. Also, the parking is the worst.

I Love Super Crowded!  This is what we affectionately have nick named this particular location.   It's always super crowded, and for a good reason.
The produce is fresh and cheaper than you can image. The variety of foods make you feel like you are on vacation in another country.  The deli and cheese counter requires you to take a number, and once you successfully maneuver a space between the gridlock of carts, it's worth it.
When they call your number you feel like you just won at BINGO.   Again, the prices are crazy affordable!   Shimmy past the meat dept that can leave you slightly traumatized by the piles of carnage to the bakery.
The fruit tarts are fresh and half of what you would pay somewhere else.
The assorted filo, nut and honey pastries are craving you to take them home for a treat.   Even though it's super crowed, the lines at check out move fast and are always entertaining.

Yes! Come here and shop! Just be careful in the parking lot. HeeHee! You'll know what I mean when you get here.

My hubby was worried I overspent on groceries, but our cart full of groceries only cost us $55 and that's before coupons! Haha! He was surprised at the register. I love this place!

Every time I come here, I stock up on fresh fruits and veggies for the week. Deli sliced meat and cheeses are a great buy and sooooo yummy. Try the turkey ham and smoked Gouda!! Mmmm!!

The meat, poultry, and seafood are a little "iffy" to me. I swear every time I walk towards the meat section, I wanna gag from the smell. And no, I'm not pregnant! I don't bother with taking a ticket number and waiting for service, unless, there's a pretty good sale on chicken drumsticks and I will be using them for a party or bbq. So, otherwise, I just grab a few packaged meats and chicken and pay a little extra instead.

They have a great selection of alcohol with decent prices if not on sale. This is where I get my beloved NUVO!!

Don't forget to stop by the hot food section where they serve cooked food to create meals with. They even have a little dining area next to it. I always get my favorite eggplant caviar and a bag of pita bread. It's so good together! I get their hummus too, but it tastes bland to me, so at home, I add some salt, olive oil, garlic powder, and fresh lemon juice and mix it all up. So good with grilled pita bread. (oops! I mentioned that already) Get the "Greco Pita" brand.

Then you get to the inevitable, don't know where the line ends, "Excuse me, I'm trying to get thru" long lines at the registers. But it's not that big of a deal once you see your total. Oh yeah!!

So hurry on out to your nearest Super King Markets and  "Save like a King!" LOL

Tip #1 Be prepared to walk into a crowded market.

Tip #2 Learn how to push a shopping cart through traffic without bumping into someones heel or tushie. Yikes!

Tip #3 Beware of your purse ladies! Don't leave it in your cart unattended.

Tip #4 Beware of popular sale items that are out of stock and are in your cart. Someone might snag it while you're not looking or when you park your cart to grab a ticket number. (Sadly, it happened to my dear mother)

If you want cheap produce that is also pretty fresh/high quality, then this is the place for you. If you eat all organic then this is not the place for you. If you don't care about that or can't afford it and are going to eat "regular" produce (with a few organic items speckled in occasionally) then you should definitely check out Super King. They also have a great deli and some of the best prices for liquor. I can leave here with a ridiculous amount of produce for around $30. I also have found their produce stays fresher much longer than other discount produce markets. Great selection or fruits and veggies too.

Pros: really cheap, great variety, fresh items, checkout lines move really fast

Cons: gets so packed you can't get into the parking lot sometimes, gets so crazy inside you can barely move your cart, some of the fellow shoppers can be downright rude. Not a good place to go to if you get claustrophobic or are easily annoyed by large crowds.

Tip: go there in the late morning or early afternoon on a weekday if possible. Evenings and weekends can be extra crazy there, unless you go on a Sunday morning while everyone is still at church. They also always have some "extra special" deals on Tuesdays and Wednesdays so those days can be a bit too much at times. We call those days Tuesday and Wednesday Madness!!

For those that bitch about the crowds, parking, and whatnot , get a f*cking grip. People come here for the amazing prices on groceries (meats, seafood, veggies, fruits, cheese, liquor) and other staples. I'll brave all of that in order to save at least 20% on my grocery bill. Yeah, you can hit up any other market but you wont find the same deals and the kick ass ethnic selection. Be adventurous and explore all that is great @ Super Kings. Complainers, please stay home.

don't really like this place because:

    First, parking is horrible

Second, people are animals and WILL run you over.

    Third, ALWAYS PACKED, always

Times like these trying to save as much money as I can when I shop, but i do admit they have really good product here, i just cant stand the place because its always crowded

Quick Tip- Fresh N Easy is much much better

Huge selection of Middle Eastern and other ethnic foods, condiments and more.
Huge produce section, where you can find any herb, or vegetable your heart desires.  Great prices too.
I love the raw nuts section.
The other day a picked up a fresh salsa tub that was located near the meat section, and it was the best (and HOT) salsa ever.
This place is always packed, whether it's a weekend, or weekday during the day... and the parking lot could be a bit chaotic, but for me it just adds to the Middle East market feel.  Give yourself a LOT of time to shop here.  I've been lost in this place for nearly 2 hours before...

Parking sucks, lines are way too long, and you probably wont be able to go through the entire store without bumping shoulder to shoulder with people. It annoys me so much but I've been coming here for about a year now- I drive from downtown to Glendale to do my two week's groceries and I can spend about $60-$100 for two here. It's worth it, and I've been here at odd times of the days, high peaks and let me tell you that there is never a quiet shopping day even if it's Tuesday morning at 10 AM or Monday night at 9 PM. It's ALWAYS crowded. The meats, bread, cheeses, veggies- nicely priced and fresh as it gets. I wouldn't buy things like cereals and brand name kitchen necessities here because it's almost always cheaper else where. LA is in need of more Super King Markets.

I agree with everyone that there is a great selection of inexpensive foods, and for this and only this I will be returning.

That aside, I went for the first time today and this place was absolutely packed and with the rudest people.

I've never, ever ever had this problem before.... but the customers at this place were abundant and blatantly rude. I was hit with carts, shoved (accidentally AND purposely), told to "get out of my fucking way".... all while being glared at. These customers seem to be regulars and they are horrible. (Look, bitch, I'm not going to try to steal your green beans. Wipe that scowl off of your face and keep your hands to yourself. Oh, and instead of scowling at me perhaps you should tend to your unruly child that is smashing the produce and screaming.)

The staff aren't much better either. I understand that it's a high volume establishment and that things are pretty hectic... but that is no excuse to treat customers with complete disrespect. I didn't see a single smile on any worker's face. Maybe they need a pay raise or maybe they need a kick in the ass. I have no idea.

It was made very clear to me that for some unknown reason I am not welcome there. I even tried my hardest to be EXTRA friendly, just to see if someone would react pleasantly. That made things worse.

What the hell is wrong with these people? Do I need to start handing out Xanax's?

Fortunately the produce selection is wonderful and cheap. I will be returning, but at least next time I'll be expecting the onslaught of barbarians.

(by the way, the rude people can't drive either. Be careful in the parking lot)

Is there a Ralph's right next to my house? Yep. Trader Joe's? Down the street. BUT...I've become smarter and ever since I discovered Super King, I will drive out of my way just to shop there. It was really frustrating to me when we would spend $200 at Ralph's and not even fill the whole fridge. Super King has the GREATEST selection of produce in town at unbelievably cheap prices!!! I feel like I'm doing something illegal when I shop there and walk away with a cartful and overflowing with everything you can imagine with under $100. I hate going to Ralph's and paying 2.79 for 1 lb of half rotten tomatoes or 2.49 for large avocados. C'mon!

Also the alcohol is VERY cheap. Bottle of 1.75 Russian Standard is no more than $19.

Their deli section is amazing! Best deals for all kinds of meat, kalbasa (they have an awesome selection of Russian/Armenian meats), cheese, salads you name it!

Yes, parking is a pain every time, no matter what time of day or what day of the week. Yes if you're not careful people will probably accidentally run into you or you may run into a few ppl on your trip, but in the end, if you strategize  and go in with a shopping list, get in and out, it's totally worth it!

As a consumer, living in Los Angeles, you can shop anywhere for your groceries, really: Trader Hoe's, Fresh 'n Sleazy, Whole Paycheck, Bristol Farms, Pavilions, etc.  With choices galore, you *could* be picky, discriminating, and research the hell out of where your food comes from.  You *could* be swayed by the latest food trends and snazzy packaging, or shop at where the "see it, be it" crowd shop.  I totally get it, being someone who loves beautifully presented produce, wide clean aisles, and ATMOSPHERE, but really, that's just fluff, and given the rising prices of basic groceries, logic and accounting win over emotional pull.

So you could continue to shop at those other chains.  OR, you could shop smart, and save huge: that's what you get at SuperKing.  Cheap produce does not mean bad produce; it just means there's a high turn-over, due to customers buying the hell out of that place, which only equals to more fresh produce.

I am always amazed at how many bags I drive away with, and how little I spend here.  Can get a shedload of groceries here for a mere $20.  Try that at any of the other places I listed above!  Superking even beats out farmers' markets prices!

p.s. parking lot is usually in a snarl, so be forewarned!

Yay!!  I finally got a job near by a Super King location.

Per one of my earlier reviews of the Super King in Anahiem, I've been salving over San Diego's desperate (okay, okay.. MY) need for a huge Ethnic Grocery market.....  luckily for Los Angeles, I contributed to the growing over-population of the city recently and am thrilled Super King is just a quick drive away!  (I haven't mastered the public trans system here yet).

Parking is much better than Anaheim's.  Also closer to a highway.   It'll get full fast, and there's bent orange posts attempting to guide everyone to take a right turn into the lot.

I love they have bulk nuts and dates.   I love they have bulk produces at such CHEAP CHEAP prices (and the quality is better here too).

The boyfriend was excited when he learned that I work near a "Fresh and Easy" market.  I gave him the eye... "uhm, what did you want from there?"
    "Mangos..."
"Uh, I'll just go to Super King for that... they're much cheaper there!"

    Shop smart, people.

Produce, Halal meat, fish heads (not that I eat them), huge bags of rice and tooty-rooty beans, jars of grape leaves (they have them fresh and frozen too!)

By the way, I just looked at the "additional tips" on the business.... Attire: Dressy / Formal.   Yeah, this is a great spot for "Trash Your Dress" photo shoot!

Super King is kind of a secret in the Eagle Rock/Glassel Park area- it seems like most of the hip young families don't shop here.  This place is as packed full of food as it is packed full of people as it is packed full of DEALS.  So, you may be playing cart jockey, but the things you will find are well worth a bit of chaos.

First off, there is an unprecedented selection of fresh produce, better in quality than any market in a 7 mile radius.  That alone makes me shop here.  But there are additional perks like middle eastern and mexican cheeses and dairy products, specialty foods, a full service butcher...  The list goes on.  Bulk nuts, special breads...  And it is cheap!

I love this place.  Totally converted!

Be careful of those cart-pushers... they have aisle-rage! Every time I come here, I get hit by carts and nearly run over!

The store is awesome with a great selection of produce and meats but the customers! It's as if you were gonna grab the bag of roma tomatoes from their tightly-clenched fists!

Great selection of ethnic items from so many different countries.  I like to cook meals from different regions so I can get most of my shopping done here.  Tons of weekly specials in the meat department (my boyfriend loves to inform me, I swear he's obsessed with this store.)  Fruits and veggies are cheap, but quality is not as high as other chain markets such as Ralphs.

Great market with a wide selection and super affordable.

This market is the bomb! Whenever we are in town visiting my folks we always drop by to load up on fruits, vegetables, meats, & nuts to take home. The thing that made this place standout is that their produce are priced much lower than the American supermarkets (e.g. Von's, Ralph's) & are much fresher than the ethnic supermarkets (e.g. Ranch 99, Super A, Seafood City). You've got to give them props for being able to keep all the items organized despite how chaotic this place can be.

Some yelpers might complain about the traffic flow & crowds of people to fight over, but you just need to avoid coming during the peak hours. Think about this, their produce wouldn't be as fresh if people don't come & shop here.

Nothing super about Super King!  Yes they have really inexpensive prices, but that doesn't make up for the experience one has to go through when shopping there! Although if you want to experience life in a third world country super market, save yourself a plane ticket and go to Super King right away.  Be prepared cause in addition to the horrible service, and the crowds, almost non of  the staff seems to speak English.  I work in the area and they constantly cause a cluster f***k of traffic on San Fernando road each time they have specials.  I can't imagine why someone would sit in that traffic that backs into the 2 FWY off ramp just to get into the parking lot.  I'm not sure where they get their meats from but it must be some reject or un graded source, cause the two times I've tried them I have gotten sick both times.  There is a reason they are so cheap!!!
The service, the crowds, the crazy tactics of the customers that shop there, none of it is worth experiencing just to get lettuce at 30%off retail prices.  I'll stick to Trader Joe's that is as crazy and I can handle when shopping for groceries.

I work at the Media Center office park around the corner so I've seen this place throughout the years. I also just found out that the Eagle Rock Brewery is a few blocks away from SuperKing (SK from now on)  so I really think this review should be prefaced by one piece of soon to be sage advice:

A pint or 4 before your trip to SK, just to make the experience a bit easier to take.

You see, SK deserves a 5 and a 1 star rating.

5 stars for: the Fruit & Vegie prices and variety. While I still can't get a decent head of lettuce there (without slugs at least), I can get raw (as in furry and unshelled) nuts and some fruits and vegetables that I've never seen anywhere else. Their prices have actually gone up over the last few years but they are still ridiculously low - Raspberries for 79 cents, cherry tomatoes for a buck a basket. 20 limes for a buck. These are not the sale prices, which can go much lower.

The meat is also cheap but I would stay far away from that marinated mush they sell. I don't want to spread rumors (ok I'm going to spread a rumor) but I'm pretty sure it's old meat that they marinate to elongate the selling life. Yeah, I got sick once and yes I know how to cook a piece of chicken.

They have a great alcohol section too, especially if you like Whisky's or Tequila's. And Hookah's too! Who the hell has ever seen a supermarket selling Hookah's?

    1 star for: The battle.

Look, I like having my fingers jammed by the cart next to me as much as the next person but SK patrons take this to another level. The carts are Costco sized behemoths of steel that probably weight 75 lbs each, so if you happen to do something stupid like stand still at the side of an aisle, expect someone to come by and bounce off your knuckles before ignoring you and then proceeding to stop directly in front of you, blocking the entire aisle, while s/he talks to her grandmother about who the hell knows what.

I've seen blood shed at this place. Almost a scalping once behind the Deli. I also once witnessed 2 (you read that right) accidents in the parking lot in the space of 30 seconds. I see why people try to park on Media Center drive (if any cops are reading this, please ticket them, yes I'm an ass but I hate it!).

3 stars as a compromise but you can just as easily give it 1 or 5. Ahh hell, I'm writing this at work - on my lunchbreak I might add but now I think I'm going to head over after work for some produce and maybe some of that yummy dessert bread. Wish me luck.

You want the best quality Produce at the Cheapest Prices?

    You want Super King Market.

I found this local legend because my rehearsal space is near by.  My life has never been the same since.  You literally CANNOT BEAT the prices on fruits and vegetables at Super King.

I went to Costco just to compare the produce prices.  Super King beat them up and sent them home crying.

    I'm talking ridiculous, oh-my-god-are-they-serious prices.

12 Mangos for 4 dollars.  Good Mangos.  Delicious mangos that make my soul weep for their beauty.

4 lbs. of oranges for .99 cents.

I've left super king with 18 separate bags of groceries and it only cost 77 dollars.

The deli and meat sections are just as popular.

Which brings us to the most talked on point of everyone's reviews:

    THE HORDE.

This is kind of a non issue for me.  Everyone knows how this place works.  It takes 1 trip to figure it out.  It's simple economics: more people will go where great product is available at a discounted price.  I feel that Super King's crowd is pretty similar to the Trader Joe's crowd.  Be prepared! FOR THIS IS SERIOUS SHOPPING! Same thing is true for the parking lot.  I've never had to wait for a space, but I'm more than willing to walk 200 yards to the door.

If you want your market to be sparsely populated and expect everyone to be wearing top hats and monocles, then by all means, head over to Bristol Farms or Whole Foods.  Just understand that I'll be enjoying an enormous bundle of red basil (purchased for .99) while you paid 3.50 for the 2 grapefruit you bought.

Super King = One of the best markets in L.A.

Cheap groceries but has extra very rude customer service and the worst parking lot in LA.

    Update:

Avoid buying discounted fish because when we started slicing the baby salmon that we bought we found out that the fish is already rotten!!! Why would they sell old, rotten that really smell bad??? Anyway when we came back to get a refund,no questions were asked and they gave us the money back.

God told us to shop at Super King.  He was subtle about it and did so through a flier, but once we saw the specials listed, we knew that God had to be responsible because he knew how tight money was for us and how much we both love eating--preferably really good food.  Besides, who but God could afford to sell Foster Farms chickens for 59 cents/lb and Stolichnaya vodka (1.75 liter, no less) for only $18?

But I'm getting ahead of myself.  A simple truth about the Me that is Tom is that I HATE SHOPPING.  Call me a typical guy.  Back when I was making decent money and paying next to nothing for rent (when I was single of course), I never checked the price of anything in the market.  If it looked good, into the cart it would go and I could gripe about the bill during the long drive home (long drive because I was living in the Boonies in Humboldt County, 98% of which is Booneyville once you get out of Eureka, and Eureka has its share of Booniness as well).  Then came marriage, quickly followed by disability and suddenly the price of everything mattered more than a little.  It was during these hard times that God directed us to shop at Super King.  We're doing much better now, but the Saving Money Whenever Possible gene has already been activated and there's no stopping it now.

Super King is THE place to shop, unless you are Hispanophobic (if there is such a word).  A lot of white bread gringos from my old neck of the woods are exactly this; they don't hate Latinos, they just figure that anyone with dark skin who doesn't speak English without an accent other than a Southern drawl can't be trusted.   Yeah, I can't stand ignorant people either, which helps explain why I'm back in LA, in East Hollywood, which is exactly the wrong neighborhood for people who fear Latinos.

The prices at Super King are amazing, and when something goes on sale, the prices can be mind-boggling.  They have Super Saver sales every Wednesday (is it just me, or is the "D" in the name Wednesday superfluous?) and Thursday, when the prices are so outrageously low that if you think about it too hard you'll go catatonic.

The meat department is a zoo, but the butchers make short order out of long lines and it never takes too long.  The isles are too narrow considering there is always at least 100,000 people in the store at any given hour, but the people who are shopping are far more pleasant than the yuppies I have to weave around and who run into me with their carts on the rare occasions that I shop in Albertson's or Von's ("low price leader"... give me a break, will you?).  Super King always has plenty of helpers on duty and the checkers are amazingly fast.  Lines that would take half an hour to get through in other stores take no more than 5 minutes to dissipate in Super King.

The best part is that the workers--especially the managers and assistant managers--are extremely friendly and helpful.  And if something is on sale and they run out, this is the only super market in which I've shopped where the employees not only let you know that you can get a rain check for the sale price (and it's good for 2 weeks), but they all but insist that you get one, and will even take you to customer service to be sure you get it.

There's an excellent reason why Super King is always crowded, yet it's the only market where I insist on going with my wife, and I'm never in a hurry to leave.

Terrible service, parking and crowds. To save .$25 on a loaf of bread, I'll go somewhere that has ample parking, people who don't roll over your feet with their cart, and employees who are helpful. The food was ok, and they do have a nice selection of middle eastern fare, but so do many markets and ultimately you get what you pay for.

Pretty good place to shop! The produce section prices were amazing and unbeatable. Had a great experience there. However...some of the vegetables like the romaine lettuce and carrots I bought turned out to be a little old.

They have a HUGE meat section, which kind of smelled a little bad. So be careful... The prices were excellent on meat.

The bakery section also features some great prices.

As for half the items throughout  the store, you'll find the same prices at Vons. The rest are decent to great prices. They feature a LOT of international foods, and the place is usually pretty crowded. However, I went on Friday around 2 p.m. and there was still plenty of parking available and the lines weren't very bad at all. It helps that they have a lot of friendly cashiers.

When I'm in the area I enjoy coming here.  Great prices on quality produce.   Sometimes stuff you can't find at other markets .. like fresh raw pistachios , etc.

Last time I was there, in the bakery section I bought their freshly made Manaesh Sandwich  $1.99 - very tasty.  Next time I'll have to ask if they sell the spread they use for it separately.

Terrible parking situation, esp on weekends.   I usually park across the street so I don't have to deal with it.  Minus one star for that.
