11 reviews for Super J's Authentic Hawaiian
Great dive that only serves kalua pork and lau lau, but both made awesome. 10x better than L&L. We each got the combination plate, and even though everything has been made, it took 10 minutes to get the plate because the lady was moving at Hawaii pace. Strangely enough, it didn't upset me, she just took her time and it felt really local and relaxed that way.
laulau was wonderful -pork was juicy and fatty. Kalua pork had a lot of flavor and cabbage. It tasted healthy, I hope it was because we ate everything (including the macaroni salad).
We almost missed this place because of the tailgating local who was shaking her fist at us as we slowed down to turn into the small parking lot. The "restaurant" is really a large, dim kitchen room in a house. It reminds me of the dining room at the Buddhist temple in San Jose, Chua Duc Vien.
They only have two dishes: lau lau and kailua pig. The two entrees were a little too homemade for me, but I did, however, really like the macaroni salad, which was not very creamy, and the very spicy chili sauce. The combos were about $7.50 each, a little high for slightly smaller-portioned, homemade food.
The actual address is 83-5409 Mamalahoa Hwy, Captain Cook, HI, 96704. It is right next door to the Royal Kona Visitor Center Mill and Museum, on the south side.
On our way back from Volcano National Park one evening, we found ourselves in a very rural part of the island where there were no dinner options whatsoever. Having done my homework, I knew Super J's was a place we needed to visit and it was nearest place going northbound w/o having to go all the way to Kona.
As we pulled up into the parking lot, all the description about this place being like someone's house reassured us this was the right place. Seriously, we would've never stopped at this place if not for the Yelp reviews. As we walked up to the front door (w/ 2 hungry kids), the sign says they close at 6:30PM. I look at the clock - it's 7:30PM. Resigned to another 30 minute drive before dinner, we peeked through the metal screen door and the family was having dinner. They see us and, unbelievably, waved us in. Are you kidding or what?
They literally had to scrounge around for stuff to feed us. They even shared some of their dinner. We were uninvited guests who crashed their dinner. By the end of dinner, our kids were playing with their kids. We won't soon forget their graciousness.
BTW, I don't believe the Yelp map has this place positioned properly. For those w/ GPS, here's the address: 83-5409 Mamalahoa Hwy, Captain Cook, HI, 96704

I list eating at Super J's as one of my top 5 reasons for returning to Hawaii. Seriously. Delicious, cheap, authentic Hawaiian plate lunches, served by the friendliest woman ever, out of the kitchen of her house. The Kalua pork and cabbage was very tasty--perfect over rice--and the Lau Lau pork was absolutely, melt-in-your-mouth heavenly. I'm not a big fan of lomi lomi salmon, so I ordered just meat and rice, which came out to be cheaper and equally delicious.
This place is located right off the highway in what's basically a house, but luckily there's a wide driveway for you to swerve into when you realize you're there. It's open until about 5 or 6 (probably until the food runs out). Prices are about $5-7 a plate, depending on sides.

My husband and I went to Hawaii on our honeymoon and decided to follow Rachael Ray's advice and ask the locals where they eat REAL AUTHENTIC Hawaiian food.
All of them advised us to try Super J's. My husband and I walked in and were surprised that it looked someones living room with a ordering counter in it. We looked confused but asked the nice owner lady what to order. She told us there were two items, the Kahlua pork and the Pork Lau Lau, so we ordered one of each. Our meal came with rice and lomi lomi which is like a salmon side dish with tomatoes.
I am not a big fan of Hawaiian food, but it was quite enjoyable. Very tasty and just different... I liked the pork lau lau more than the Kalhua pork.
So if you are ever in Kona, HI, take a drive off the beaten path to find Super J's. OMG I sound like annoying Rachael Ray ! HAAAAAAA!

Great authentic Hawaiian food! Try the pork lau lau, it's wonderful! Like the other reviewers have mentioned, the place basically looks like it is in the living room of some woman's kitchen. The metal doors make it look closed, but once you enter, you're greeted with a smile. The woman running the place is very nice and explains what everything is if you're not entirely sure what you're eating. Definitely a unique experience and a must try!

Eh Brah Broke da Mouth
Ono lishus laulau No ka 'oi
Going south right after the tree house look quick or you wil miss it
red building flat roof right on the hiway. park in front.
You can take a dozen already frozen with you.
You peel the outer ti leaf off inside is a Klondike bar size piece of pork wraped in young tero leaf. The only problem you never buy enough.

Perfect cheap hole in the wall with the best lau lau I've ever had!!!
This is a treat beyond compare for those who want authentic Hawaiian food. The Lau lau are outstanding and the hospitality is too. Call before going as they run out early and often (ask me how I know...).
When I stepped in to Super J's Authentic (wooed by the name, for real), I was a little afraid that I was interrupting a big family gathering. It was sort of a living/ dining room, with lots of generations around a table. In response to my confused look, the gestured me and my husband in. And good thing they did, because I don't think that we experienced the real Hawaiian lunch until we joyously inhaled their kalua pig, pork laulau, and that salmon salsa thing. Yum!! We ate out in their garagey area, overlooking the sea. Nice. The woman who made our food was so super friendly and sweet, and she chatted and chatted with us. We loved it.
