This may be a first, but I'd like to share a video review of SuperFresh and Whole Foods, which sit on opposite corners of 10th and South.

This short film mockumentary was part of the 2009 Philadelphia Fringe Show, 'Wawapalooza 3'  A lot of the inspiration was drawn from reading the descriptive http://Yelp.com reviews, which I mention in the short. Enjoy!

A few months ago I had an incident at this Superfresh. They had a promotion going on and all the signage was very confusing, so I spoke with a customer service person to get a better understanding. I then spent an hour shopping and making very specific selections with the purpose of buying items that would maximize taking advantage of this promotion.

But when I got to the checkout, it turned out that it had been explained to me all wrong. I was being given about 1/100th of what I had expected to receive out of this promotion. I asked to speak to a manager, and got bumped up and up and up to different people, all of them telling me there was nothing they could do.

Ultimately I left behind my entire basket of groceries. I found everyone to be rude and, frankly, to not have a store honor the word of an employee is not only  unfair, it's against the law. (Google "Implied Authority of Contract".)

I ended up going VERY high up in the SuperFresh chain of command, talking to someone in their legal department who deals with their contests and promotions. I was ultimately mailed a package with what I was denied at the store (even though I didn't even buy the items.) I told this person that I would take a break from this store location and try again later.

So after waiting half a year, I went back to this store yesterday. I shopped for 20 minutes. Because of a public transportation strike, the place was packed, and I waited in line for about 20 minutes. Then, while there were still 3 people in front of me, the checkout man pointed to the woman in front of me and said "Miss, you will be my last customer."

I was flabbergasted. Trying to maintain my cool, I said "Excuse me? I was already in this line for 20 minutes! You can't just make me move to another line." The man, clearly NOT sorry or concerned with me, said "That's just how it is."

"No, that's not acceptable," I replied. "We all understand that sometimes you have to close your line down, but you do so by telling NEWLY ARRIVED people that the line has been closed down. You don't make someone who was already waiting in the line move to another line with 15 people in it."

Though I was not yelling or raising my voice, it became one of those situations where the people in line around me were rolling their eyes at me. That's kind of a shame, because I wonder how they would feel if they were in my situation.

"Could you please point out the manager to me?" I said to the checkout person, who at this point would neither speak to me or make eye contact with me.

So I wheeled myself over to customer service - a familiar area - and asked to speak to a manager. I explained the situation, and I also explained that I was abandoning the $100 in groceries I had intended to buy, and that this time, I was not ever coming back.

Thanks to the horrible rating of my last review it goes with out saying that I used to absolutely loathe this store. Much like Monica it used to be a place that I ran away from at a ninja's pace.

But since I noticed the considerable face lift that everyone else had the curiosity was starting to kill me. So finally I decided to brave it too. And when I saw things like FRESH produce, and organic frozen foods, I instantly realized that the facelift was more than just cosmetic. And I especially realized it when I got to pick up a delicious chipolte dipping sauce that had grapeseed oil in it!

The facelift also managed to bring in some workers who were a lot more helpful and friendly. So while a lot of the old turn offs were still present, it was a considerable step in the right direction.

Supa Fresh used to be the grocery store I'd run from. I'd actually shield my eyes upon passing and hurry at a ninja's pace to the Whole Foods down the street.

Since I'm all about conquering fears lately, I decided the recent Fresh face-lift deemed the store worthy of a visit.

The vegetable section is categorized now? Like, all the lettuce goes in its own island unit? All the starches are together? They have a hot foods unit? Different types of rotisserie chicken? Bok Choy?

Having recently discovered my affection for caffeine, I raced (Supermarket Sweep-style) to the coffee section. When I saw all the different whole bean blends, I decided to go with a medley: Ethiopian, Vanilla Creme, House Blend, Hazelnut, Chocolate Raspberry, Colombian, Kenyan. I ground my selection in the machine and will report more on this decision tomorrow morning.

To finish off my shopping, I went to the "10 items or less" line and read the tabloid headlines while I waited, "Elvis is Alive and Pretending to be an Elvis Impersonator in Henderson, Nevada!" How very meta.

I live super close to Super Fresh so I tend to go there pretty frequently  so I don't starve. Right now they are going through a pretty big renovation and I can't wait to see what's in store (haha) for them. Basically the entire middle half of the store is under a tarp and everything is getting moved around.

The good thing about the renovation are the deals. They had morningstar stuff, egg beaters, frozen mini quickes, frozen veggies...all that stuff for 50% off. Not kidding. I ended up buying tons of stuff that wasn't on my grocery list and didn't feel bad.

One of my favorite things about this particular Super Fresh is the music (they actually played 'Uncle Albert/ Admiral Halsey' on Paul McCartney and Linda McCartney's Ram album yesterday.) Cool points through the freaking roof.

The customer service is great. One time I lost my glove and the lady at the customer service  desk announced it over the loud speaker. The cashiers are really nice, too. They always let me use their Superfresh discount card since I don't have one. The people who work there are pretty social and talk to eachother. I like how Superfresh isn't stuffy. I also like how the people who work there don't ask you if you need help a kazillion times like the people at Whole Foods.

I've never had a problem with any produce or meat here. I haven't bought anything that has already been expired (unlike at Whole Foods.) I really like their meatloaf meat blend (veal, pork, and beef). The 'ethnic' food section is great. It's pretty much the same as the ethnic food section at Ralph's in CA. I just wish they had plastic bags of spices.

I'll be back, Superfresh...and I'll bring my own bag.

Holy renovations!

Like the fat kid, who comes back from summer vacation looking all svelte and sexy, Super Fresh emerged from its makeover cocoon looking classier than ever. Walking around today after work, I couldn't believe it was the same store!

It's clean, organized, the SIGNS ACTUALLY INDICATE WHERE THINGS ARE, there's a mini bakery, a whole section of exquisite cheeses (Whole Foods ain't got nothing on this), a deli with pasta salads that actually look edible, a large section of ready-to-eat foods (I got the Italian wrap and mac n' cheese -- both tasty) and my personal favorite, AN OLIVE BAR!  WITH STUFFED GRAPE LEAVES! (mmmm) They even had whole wheat bagels (a rarity) in stock.  It really seems too good to be true.

Of course, the produce still isn't anywhere near the quality of Whole Foods...but it's a lot cheaper too. Oh Super Fresh, I am sorry I misjudged you. If you can keep this up, I promise I'll never diss you for your swanky neighbor again!

kKnda grungy - but they DO play classic rock tunes while you shop.
I get a few staples/non perishable items here and then hit whole foods for produce and hormone-reduced dairy.

I was presently surprised when I walked into this store recently.  What used to be an ugly, dirty looking store has been tranformed into a decent store.  Yes, their selection is somewhat limited, but it will do in a pinch.  For a fuller selection, nothing beats the Super Fresh on Columbus.  The American Choice Blood Orange Italian Soda is delicious.  I tried it on a whim and am glad that I did.

Two weeks ago I stopped in the new Superfresh after shopping at Whole Foods to pick up a few things that Whole Foods does not have  and I was wishing I had gone there first.  Especially since they had not one but two brands of free range Chicken (Bell & Evans and D'artagnan) each was less than the little chicken I picked up. AND they had much to my surprise whole fresh D'artagnan Ducks for $15!! OMG the crappy frozen duck at Acme is $16..so I grabbed one, along with that I go some red carrots, rainbow chard and guava paste..also got paper towels etc.

So awesome, made a beautiful dinner of duck breasts w/ guava glaze and  red carrots with satuteed swiss chard.

This week I went to Super fresh first, and sigh, no ducks, I was hoping for another one so I could make duck legs for Passover. And It just did not seem as shiny and new and fabulous as it did before. The ..lets call it Premium Poultry Section looked wanton and old. The ducks were gone, and the prepackaged bits and pieces looked thrown together.

After a second look at the cheeses, they were not that much different in price from Whole Foods and were all pre packaged, $12 for a plastic wrapped piece of aged gouda..eh , I could get a fresh cut piece at Dibrunos for the same.

The Produce was just not as shiny, the section with the "Special Stuff" looked worn down. So I went back to Whole Foods and price compared ( I have the time since work has not been so busy), Whole foods fresh herbs were cheaper and lusher (huge bunch of fresh mint for 1.99, at didn't even have it at Superfresh), their veggie prices were similar if not in some cases less (asparagus for example) and much nicer stuff.

The seafood did not look fresh. Its in a poorly lit section of the store, and I didn't see anyone behind the counter. I'm no supermarket expert  but I think that a well lit active seafood counter is indicative of the freshness of the product.

There were still some fun packaged goods and decent selection, esp dairy and they have my new favorite item Rachels' Cottage Cheese is either Lemon Verbena Berry or Sundried Tomato Pesto (yogurt cup sized of flavored cottage cheese).

So I what I'm saying Superfresh was a great first date, but the second one wasn't so fantastic, And there was someone working there who was either having an argument with himself or had a very well concealed bluetooth, either way it was off putting.

I think Superfresh will become a place for me to go to see IF they have something rather than regular shopping. They got a bit of a facelift but still a wee bit meh..

Changing my rating again! I came here twice in last two weeks and tried to pick up some stuff on sale and TWICE, it didn't ring up on sale. WTHECK?! I have them go check and they tell me I picked the wrong item (which they placed so slyly next to the hidden sale item) and instead of grabbing it for me, I had to get out of line and grab the sale one myself while they just stood there waiting. You'd think they'd just grab it when they went to check the price in the first place. Second instance, I read clearly that my item was on sale but again, didn't ring up that way. I have them go check and they come back bringing a smaller bottle which wasn't even on sale.... I got pissed so walked back to aisle because I was sure that I saw it on sale. It WAS on sale but they never removed the sign when the sale ended 3 days earlier... New stuff, same people. Boo.

It wouldn't be fair to not re-review this Superfresh, because it has been completely redone.  It is much nicer now and has so much more to offer.  I don't know how to find anything yet, but that will come with time.  Now if only they could get the cashiers to smile and say hello....

i suppose the prices are good, the organization is a little odd, some things are missing, and i couldn't find any baskets when i went. but the selection is generally good. all in all i'd probably prefer whole foods but superfresh feels like a real store, and they sell real products that one cannot locate in whole foods.

mostly minus the stars because it feels a little cold in there.... it's kinda dark....

I've been going here for years and I'm fed up with this goddamned store. It is neither Super or Fresh. I hate this store.

But guess what, it's the only place for affordable groceries in Center City (although affordable produce and deli items are easily found down the street in the Italian Market). I have no choice. I'm there almost every day, trying desperately to grab the one and only box of Cheerios left available when on sale. Never have I seen so many gaps on a supermarket shelf than when there's something on sale. Virtually nothing gets replaced. The selections of every other product are far and few between.

Their "customer service" is the very antithesis of the phrase. The whole staff carries an irreverent 'tude. And would it be too much to ask to get people to help bag on busy days when lines are going all the way back to the deli counter?

I second whomever mentioned hitching a ride to Wegmans.

There are different supermarkets for different purposes.  (See my review of Whole Foods.)  Some places specialize in meats and produce, some specialize in organic foods, spices and herbs, or pastries.

You go to SuperFresh to buy everything that was packaged and sealed somewhere else.  You cannot tell me that Kleenex tissue from SuperFresh is tainted.  Yogurt made by Yoplait tastes differently.  Ziploc baggies don't seal and make the little blue strip turn purple.

Everything in a city is over priced because store owners know they have a captive/stranded audience which they can gouge for every last penny.  SuperFresh on 10th & South provides a reasonably inexpensive alternative to little markets, traveling to NJ, or dealing with lack luster selection in products at mini-marts, CVS, and "specialty stores".

I go here often to stock up on things that I need and am always happy.  The place has a nice low ceiling so you don't feel like you're walking around a warehouse.  You get what you need fast and leave.

I like this location a lot and it is conveniently located across the street from Whole Foods.

The only thing fresh about this market is the smell and it's not a very super scent.

When I moved to South Street, I figured that this market would be a place to fulfill my non-organic needs outside of Wholefoods.  But, Bill is right -- the CVS across the street can take care of non-food needs and, to be honest, I wouldn't eat food from this place if it was being given away for free.

A SMELL OF GARBAGE GREETS YOU WHEN YOU WALK INSIDE.

Enough said.

The only reason why I'm not giving it one star is because I have never been personally wronged by it.  I think that's the only occasion that something should get one star.

I'm giving it 5 because it is what it should be!  They have fresh food...while not always the best...or it's worth what you're paying for.  I'm one of the non-whole food folks.  I do not see the purpose of paying 3 dollars more for Driscoll's strawberries when I can get the exact same product here at good old Super fresh!  Plus...they have the super fresh card...for those like me that free ham at Christmas comes in handy!!
Rock on affordable Groceries!!!!

This Super Fresh actually manages to make the one on 5th Street look good by comparison!  What a dump.  Yes, occasional specials on pre-packaged goods makes it a worthwhile stop if you're in the neighborhood, but the horrible customer service reflects that this must be a horrible place to work -- why else would everyone be so rude and so slow and nasty.  I try not to go there very often because it seems that I always come out of the store in a much worse mood than when I walked in.  I swear, these people could make Mr. Rogers slap a baby.

When I lived on 9th and Fitzwater and couldn't afford Whole Foods for staples, I was subjected to the hell that is Superfresh. For some reason, the produce section ALWAYS smells like nailpolish and the last thing I want is for my fruit and veggies to perpetually smell like harsh chemicals.  The shelves are always a mess and disorganized. Don't even get me started on the deli. I bought the Red Bliss potato salad, which was ironic because instead of being blissful, it tasted like straight up lemon scented dish soap. If you need things like, oh, Triscuits, then Superfresh isn't that bad, but if you can, try and bum a ride off of someone to Wegman's.

This grocery, at 10th & South, is convenient if you don't want to pay high prices at the mini-mart or Whole Foods.  But it's not always clean and is a bit of a bear to navigate.  They've got the basics, but beyond that I never get everything I need here.

Super Fresh on South is Gross! When you go in the store you feel like you need a tetanus shot. It's like a corporately run nasty bodega. Go hungry, it'll be worth it. :P
