Review from Genevieve G.
Tucson, AZ
This is hands-down my favorite restaurant in the San Diego and quite possibly my favorite Mexican food in the US. It's savory, spicy and nostalgic. You know it's good when the parking lot is full of white work trucks. Just sayin'.
I lived in Queretaro, Mex., and on my way home from class, I'd run by a small kitchen run out of someone's house, order take out (there was only one meal to choose from), and they'd load me up with plastic bags filled with stewed goodness, secured with a knot at the top. I'd get home and pour the goodness on the plate, and eat till I wished there was more, being tempted to lick the plate. That's what this tastes like.
There's a smorgasbord of stewy dishes to choose from, as well as some standard favorites like gorditas and chilaquiles (with crumbly white requeson cheese - the real deal). Everything is amazing. Best of all, enjoy a sample of whatever, before you choose your three stewies in the meal.
Super Cocina is a life-changer. -

The food gets 5 stars no questions asked. Great authentic Mexican cuisine. The flavor, style, and varieties are great!
The only reason I don't give it 5 stars it's the amount of the servings. They serve very small portions. Customer service is not the greatest either. -

Super Cocina es 'super'
Terrific food. Great service (they let you try various dishes before you order). Generous serves. Get the 'puerco colorado' for a nice spicy culinary bliss. Not much else I could add that hasn't been added yet. -

Really it shouldn't be hard to find good Mexican food in San Diego right? Apparently there is a regular argument between 'authentic' and 'California style'. Luckily the front desk guy at my hotel pointed me towards this authentic styled spot.
Things were a bit different inside with the counter service and being a little more worn down. But I like that in a Mexican place. I go for the food, not a high class atmosphere! I had this spicy chicken burrito thing. It was awesome. Added bonus of great rice (I love my rice).
This place is a great dive! -

WHY THE HYPE?? We checked this place out a few weeks ago bc the rating was so high, but after eating it I can't see why!! Maybe it was just me, but I found this place to be "too real".
It seems dirty inside and none of the food looked appealing to me. After trying to get over this initial shock I was coaxed into ordering some food. I like the fact that there menu changes and rotates daily, but that doesn't change the fact that the sampler platter I ordered went into the garbage relatively untouched.
With all the other Mexican places in the city I don't understand this one. It is very "unique" and if you like this kind of place MORE POWER TO YOU. As someone that tends to really enjoy dive-y Mexican restaurants this one seems to dive a little too deep for me. -

Authentic Mexican! so good! I ordered in the first time based on the yelp reviews and we were not disappointed. After walking in I realized wow! they have freshly made buffets style food. They let you sample food and the English is a bit limited but food transcends any language barriers - it's delicious! The chicken mole and carnitas is wonderful and if you are feeling adventurous the menudo is amazing and anything else in the buffet= just try and ask for a sample! Great for those who like hole in the wall establishments for great prices and great food!

I love super cocina.
I could see why others would comment this is more of a lunch place.
Plain and inviting, Super Cocina delivers food with grace (at least from a foodie's point of view).
I was impressed with the expert execution of such a wide variety of mexican food.
Serve cafeteria style with paper plates and plastic forks, I would not change a thing.
You go here for good food.
Super Cocina, I would not change a thing. Keep doing what your doing. -

I came back with my officemates and it was even more amazing!!!! I had no idea what anything was so my officemate basically just chatted up the guy behind the counter in Spanish and he was totally generous by allowing us to sample so many dishes! I settled on verde chicken and carnitas with mole. OMG THE MOLE!!! I still remember how amazing it tastes. On the carnitas it was just incredible. I can't even remember what else they put on the plate and I don't really care. I want more mole. I though chocolate on meat sounded strange but omg, how stupid I was being. These people need to be given an award for most amazing sauces ever. I also had some horchata which was yummy and I was SO crazy full by the end I couldn't eat until 2pm the next day. I thought i was going to explode. This was all my fault because they give you large portions (for so cheap!) and I ate ALL the carnitas because I couldn't stand the thought of throwing it away. And I drank all of my horchata, rookie mistake. Next time no consuming of liquids so I can shove more delicious food into my mouth.
Lots of parking and although it scares some people, I don't think this part of town is that scary. Try going to Bonnie Jean's.....1 Previous Review: Show all »

San Diego, CA
When I choose a restaurant the service and overall experience is as important as the food to me. Fortunately this place has both. My family and I have been dining here for several years now and have never been disappointed. We have had them cater several parties at our home and work and always get positive feedback on the food. The father and son recognize me when I come in and always have a moment to say hello. I get the spicy pork. The best.

This is good Mexican food, I lived in Mexico for many years and one of the things I miss, is being able to pull up to a place with food you would find cooked at any mexican house, Super Cocina is this!!! We've been there a ton of times and love it. This time we had menudo, chile relleno (filled with a ground beef mixture and topped with a sweet cream and pomegranite), spicy pork stew, a potato cake and a couple of things I am forgetting, no doggy bags as there was nothing left, I highly recommend this place. Ohhh, BTW, my mexican wife (from a tiny fishing village in the jungle outside of Acapulco) loves it tooo! Enough said.

Oy!
One hundred thousand thanks to Robert for telling er showing us this spot! All the great authentic Mexican stews and such are so damned good.
One of those places that looks like they don't even have a permit for food sales and is actually in the business of trafficking DVD players or running a dog fighting ring, but the food was amazing!
Beyond amazing!
I has this cilantro based chicken thing and it was so tender I could cut it with my plastic spoon.
Oh the tastes! -

Absolutely delicious! I got a goat soup and beef empanada. The service was splendid, too. A nice guy walked us through explaining what everything was and giving us samples. Will return when I am in the area.

Thank you Super Cocina for making me love my lengua so much it made me get up and check the back to make sure my grandma didn't secretly work here!!
My parents were born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico so at home we always had homecooked meals made from scratch. I can testify that Super Cocina is true homestyle cooking with no frills or BS embellishments. This is a place I can bring my family to and not be worried about them putting american cheese in our dishes. The only sweating I get to do is from their spicy pork which is true to its name. However, minus 1 because their rice was very bland and not very good....if they can fix that they would get a solid 5 stars for sure.
The interior is colorful and pleasant. Plenty of tables and natural light from the large windows. If you're looking for some fancy decor or loud music playing feel free to head down to the nearby El Camino and don't forget to bring your hipster hoodies and toms. -

San Diego, CA
Muy delicioso! My favorite thing about this place is that the very friendly counter people will give you free tastes of anything you like so that you can choose the meal that will delight you the most.
Been here twice, The first time was better than the second, but I'm willing to keep going back and trying.
First trip I had just about the most moist and succulent carnitas I've ever had. I had a double scoop dish where I got rice and beans, and the carnitas with one other entree. Sadly I cannot remember what the other choice was because I liked it even better than the carnitas. It was some other kind of stewed meat (which just about all of their entree options are ----slow cooked meats mixed with other delicious things. It may have been lamb but I just can't remember.
Second trip I had the carnitas and something else that I can't remember that I liked less than the carnitas and less than the stewed meat I'd had on my prior visit.
The place is very casual and it's counter service only. Margaritas and beer would make this place even better. Maybe next time I'll call ahead and ask if I can bring my own.
Definitely worth a visit. Just don't be a clean queen who is afraid of a place that looks slightly shopworn, I wouldn't call it dirty, but you're also not dining in the lap of luxury. -

Fantastic food. Not the cleanest place in San Diego, but the food makes up for the lack of decor. If you're not sure what you want, just ask to sample the sauces with the various meats.

San Diego, CA
Story time. If you've read my reviews, you know I do this every so often, and usually when the place is good.
When I was younger and we moved back to San Diego from Silver Springs, MD one of my first friends at my new school on the other side of Mira Mesa (from our previous home on another side of the Mecca) was a girl named Jasmin de Jesus. She was Filipino. But after school we would walk home together, and the lady who babysat her was an old school grandmotherly sort from deep in Mexico and she would feed Jasmin and watch her for three hours until her parents got home from work. She barely spoke any English, but when most of her time was spent in the kitchen while us kids did homework in the living room with the usual kitchen sounds and a telenovela going on in the background, she didn't have much of a need for language.
The food was always good, and this was my first experience with mole. She never made anything with tripe or organ meats, because Jasmin had all sorts of food allergies, so her parents paid this lady extra to get regular cuts of beef or pork. I guess she liked pork because that's what she always served. Usually with a kind of mole or red sauce. It was always delicious.
Fast forward 10 years, and I'm a newlywed. My Spanish is nonexistent even though I live right on the border and I am the descendant of a very prominent and proud Spanish bloodline (mi abuelito, God rest his soul, would be horrified to learn that the youngest granddaughter he had while he was still alive retained nothing of his Spanish language teachings) and I have this hankering for Mexican food that's more than just tacos and burritos. I'm browsing the international food section of Ralph's on Genesee Ave. and Balboa Ave. and I see a jar of mole sauce. That's mistake #1. I should never have done that because it frightened me.
Fast forward another 10 years. I'm in the 92104 zip code with my friend Robby from Renaissance Faire, and we'd just done a long thrift store hunt looking for old items that we could use with our garb, and he says hey, I'm hungry, let's grub here. Now we get to the heart of the review.
You walk in and it smells like a Mexican kitchen. Not the regular taqueria kind, but the kind that smells like meat has been freshly butchered, and mole has been cooking for hours. I'm not a fan of organ meats myself, and on some days they serve dishes that have bits I won't eat, but don't let that stop you. I hear they're delicious. I pick out a 2 item combo with rice and beans, and I ordered the barbacoa and carnitas and we find a place to sit and nosh.
Suddenly, my handsome buddy Robby turns into Jasmin de Jesus and I'm 10 years old all over again.
Every so often my husband and I will come here. He likes the chile relleno, and no other local joint can make it this good. We're both fans of the other white meat and will always always order carnitas, and then I'll usually get another dish and we share in the beans and rice. If you want real comida cocina mexicana this is your joint on this side of the border. -
Review from Nina L.
It took Yelp to bring to me here. I only live a few blocks away but I never took a chance to actually dine here. The menu is all in Spanish. Like everyone else says, it's authentic.
There is parking here, on either side of the restaurant. You can park in the streets too. I don't know Spanish very well so I ordered the combination plate which is 7.99 + tax. The lady behind the counter was friendly. I'm guessing she knows this was my first time so she let me sample some of the dishes. The combination plate has rice & beans and 2 different meats of your choice which you can pick out behind the glass. I ordered the first two meats that she let me sample. The portion is generous and it comes with 3 corn tortillas. Order to go or dine here, your choice.
The flavors were so tasteful.. they were kickin'. The meats are so tender and juicy. The food was hot. Like, the temperature of the food is steamy and there is a hint of spice to it. Now, this place definitely one of my favorite Mexican restaurants. I can't wait to come back to try the other things on their menu! :) Yummmmmmmm. -

We went on my friend Martha's advice. Our experience was wonderful, so much so that the BF accused me of hiding the place from him because I first heard about it almost a year ago.
We enjoyed phenomenally tasty food, and super friendly/ helpful servers. We tasted almost all the guisos (stews) before making our selections. It probably didn't hurt that we speak Spanish, were very polite to our server, and that our toddler was flirting shamelessly with her. We loved our dinner tonight and will definitely be back! -

The location is on University but sitting on the 'other' side of the 805. Don't fear to venture off into terrains with good food! I always had a feeling there was more to Mexican food than just tacos and burritos. This is the place to go if you want to eat more of the stewed type of meats like chicken and pork, etc. with intense flavor!
You can get a 2-item combo where you pick 2 different entree type dishes to be scooped onto your plate with rice and beans. The lady here was nice to give samples and upon bite after bite, it was getting harder to decide what to order. The orange chicken, and some kind of pork was our favorites. I'm not a big fan of mole, but the mole here had a nice flavor to it. My friend mentioned that it reminded her of curry, like if there was such a thing as Mexican curry, this is kind of it. I thought the food was hearty and filling.
Devoured my plate. Enough said. -
Review from Chris C.
The two times I've been here, I really didn't have any idea what was going on. I just went up to the counter, said something in English, got handed samples of all the entrees and options by a very patient employee, and then coughed up my credit card to pay.
It didn't matter if I knew what I got; everything was awesome. Even their beans (beans!) were tasty. The emphasis isn't even so much on the meats as on the tasty broth the meats are in. In general, it reminds me a lot of the best Indian curries, except with a Mexican taste.
There appear to be a rotating variety of dishes, especially the vegetarian ones, and what tasted like some amazing soups, so I'll definitely be back to try more. The interior is nothing impressive, but it smells delicious.
Parking is surprisingly plentiful (lots on both sides). -

Yummmm.... Hadn't been here in at least three years since I moved out of the neighborhood but had a craving. The chicken mole was just as good as I remembered. It is way better than the mole I've had in any fancy restaurant. I had forgotten that the rice and beans taste amazingly good, and unlike most. They didn't have my other old standby, the chicken in green sauce, so I got enchiladas verde with chicken. They were okay, but for me it's all about the mole.
A few of my friends are crazy about the Caldo de Res.
Legend has it that the owner has little Mexican moms cook their village's specialties... I don't know if that's true but it's all yum.
Great value. Casual dining. Good for take out. Mole... -

Just like how grandma used to make it...jk...if I had a Mexican grandma I'd imagine the food coming out like Super Cocina. If you're looking for a break from any of the "-berto's," make a stop here!
The typical thing to get is to choose your two-item combo that comes with rice, beans, and three corn tortillas. If you are a spicy fan, you must try the spicy pork that's sitting in delicious red chili sauce. They also have a variety of other dishes such as mole, menudo, and pozole, but they change out their menu items on a daily basis, so I'm always in for a treat when I stop by. The carnitas is also delicious! The ladies behind the counter are always patiently giving you taste test cups if you're not sure what to get.
The place feels a bit stuffy when you first walk in, but you forget about that when you start chowing down on some deliciousness. I can't wait for my next spicy pork adventure! -
Review from jeff l.
I am not sure if I was lucky to get a different cook but today they were on their A game!
I ordered my usual two entree combination of carnitas and puerco colorado.
This was without a doubt the best rendition of both dishes I have ever had here.
The pork was cooked perfectly and very tender and not overcooked or hard which it can be a times. Today it was just perfect!
The carnitas seemed to be stewed in some oil as it usually is and it was really juicy and tender also. Again the best ever for this dish since I have been eating here for over 10 years.
The best part of the meal was afterwards when I asked the owner who I have talked to and met many times.
I asked him if guajillo chiles were in the puerco colorado.
With that little hint he opened up the vault!
He told me the entire recipe as well as the proper way to cook everything!
I have been wondering how to make that recipe for years and he just
volunteered it!!
Very few if any restaurant owners would reveal their secret recipes.
His reasoning is that he has 8 cooks in the kitchen and every one of them would cook this dish a different way.
Interesting and I am not complaining since I now have the secret!

Authentic home-cooked Mexican food. My Spanish is horrible and the first time I came here, I didn't really know what I was getting, other than the mole, but we'd heard it was good so we just went with it and were pleased. The chicken mole was really good. Today, I went to a party that Super Cocina catered and everything was amazing! I didn't realize they catered but I would most definitely consider them for my next event.

This place was definitely *not* awesome. They weren't super helpful, and even though my girlfriend knows a little Spanish, they still couldn't, or wouldn't, suggest anything that wasn't obviously a meat-based dish.
I had a pork/mole based burrito, and 4 out of 5 giant chunks of pork were really bits of pork meat stuck to the bits of pork that most people I know aren't really interested in eating.
Rice and beans were above average, beverages were above average, BUT...I wouldn't go back, even figuring in the $7 total for a fairly large burrito and 2 drinks. -

Uhhh... WOW!! This place is.. amazing! I've driven by this place a few times but I thought nothing of it.. idiot! *smacks forehead*.. I am s0o glad my brother took our family here. I walked in and was instantly confused because I could not understand the menu or how this works.
California burrito? I don't think so. This place is AUTHENTIC. None of those Socal items! Who knew that I drove 3-4 miles.. to find myself in Mexico! Here we are.. a family of 4.. Asian people.. my mom, dad, brother, and myself. Boy did we look out of place and confused. I think the owner saw us like a deer in headlights, but he was very helpful. He was sincerely welcoming and let us have samples of each and every item. Super nice and attentive!
On to the food. Their carnitas was fckin amazing! I could not stop eating it, it was so damn delicious! And their spicy pork was so flavorful and spicy! Just the way I like it! Everything we had tried was just so good! What did I do to deserve this meal?? seriously? I can't stop raving about their carnitas! It's just so sinful! Definitely coming back here! -

After a quick search for chilaquiles this placed popped up with a good amount of reviews to it's name. Decided to stop by here after the Bolt to the Q 5K as a reward for surviving and finishing. I lucked out and when i got there they ran out of chilaquiles so they had to make my order fresh. I was a bit surprised that dishes were on steam trays a la turo turo style for my Pinoy people. My friend ordered the chorizo con huevos and seemed to like his dish but was a bit taken back by the whole place. Not a bad meal after a decent accomplishment. I will have to stop by there again to try the other regional specialties of the place.

It bums me out when I read such wonderful reviews on yelp, only to get to the joint and it's completely a disappointment. Maybe it was the day or time (Wednesday, late afternoon) but because I love the saucy type of Mexican cooking, I will give it another shot.
There was only one gal working behind the counter and one younger man. If he is the one that every thinks is the owner and super friendly, they may want to think again.
Customer service where my people are concerned has always been an issue. If you are not a regular, a young pretty girl, or someone who looks important (I am none of those things) then you pretty much get squat for service.
This is a hard place to visit when you don't read or speak Spanish...almost all the signs are in Spanish, I don't believe the server spoke English and on top of that she wasn't friendly.
To the eye that has not grown up w/all kinds of Mexican sauces, soups and the like, the steam table can be very intidmidating. Everything almost looks the same, although thankfully it doesn't taste the same.
It is located in the hood and in one of the dirtiest parking lots/bldings I've seen in a long time. And although I am not eating outside, I always wonder if the place is so dirty outside, what's it like inside where we can't see? -
Review from Lori N.
I know everyone has said it, but I have to reiterate: this really is authentic Mexican food! The menu's in Spanish, the women behind the counter speak Spanish, Mexican families are dining here, heck I wouldn't be surprised if they accepted the Peso as payment!
The combo plates are $7.99 & you get two different meats, rice, beans, & 3 corn tortillas. Add a small horchata for $1.15 & your whole gigantic meal comes out to a little less than $10. Definitely worth it.
The flavors from the sauces are absorbed into the meats as they sit & stew for hours, so it seems. The spicy pork is true to it's name, SPICY. A good bit if heat with the tender pork rounded out the dish very nicely. The carnitas were amazing as well, not the least bit dry & very well seasoned. Man, thinking about my dinner makes me want to go downstairs & open up the fridge to eat the leftovers right now even though it's 11pm!
They also have tacos for about $1.40 & burritos for $4.40, so you can have these authentic Mexican dishes served up the American way. I'm definitely going to come back to try some breakfast burritos too. This is good stuff, so brave the ghetto streets & get your butt in here! -
Review from Mari D.
What can I say, this place is as legit as it gets. Don't have any Mexican friend's mom's that will cook for you? GO HERE! It's authentic home made food. I know it has street cred too...the Gueros hit it up during their lunch. Don't look for American Mexican food here like burritos and crap...if that's what you're looking for there are perfectly legit taco shops out there...this is where you go if you want to have a home-like food experience. Do I love the food? I like it....So why am I giving it a 5 star? Because it's LEGIT! You have to give the place props for sticking to "real" food.
Afterward if you're craving something sweet hit up Frutilandia, it's on the corner and DELISH as well. -

As writing now, ages ago.
But I still remember, the meal kicked my ass.
I was sweating bullets by the end of it.
It was delicious though.
You can point and taste whatever you want.
I highly recommend getting the mondo size horchata.
The spicy pork was great. It smelled very very similarly to a south indian curry at my friend's house. This alone is pretty awesome. Very rich powerful flavors.
I also had some chicken in sauce. It was not nearly as spicy, yet it was also delicious.
I was a smidge disappointed with the potato pancake type deal, but that's okay.
Overall it's definitely worth a visit, and I am curious to see what things may or may not rotate in / out of the offerings. -

Wow....definitely authentic, definitely tasty and definitely a great value.
Delicious huevos rancheros and a variety of stews. Just ask for the combo plate and you get rice, beans, tortillas and your choice of two stews. Amazing tender meat and sauces. The coffee is surprisingly smooth as well.
It is a bit intimidating, the scenery is straight out of the TJ ghetto but I'm a sucker for hole-in-the-wall quality food. You can feel the home-style goodness. -

I turned to the Internet to help me find some good Mexican food. It worked well for me in LA, so I had hoped it would serve me well in SD. After reading numerous positive reviews for Super Cocina, I checked it out first (mainly because it's walking distance to my house).
Alas, this will not be my neighborhood Mexican joint. All the food was uncovered in heating trays and there were many flies roaming around. I ordered a carnitas burrito. The carnitas were so salty, the salt burned my mouth. Plus side: I didn't get food poisoning. -

Fantastic, affordable mexican food. There are a few items that are available all the time, but they rotate the rest of their selection on a daily basis. Half the fun is coming in, not knowing what tasty treats await. The employees are super friendly and are willing to tell you all about the food and are willing to let you sample anything. I always leave satisfied and full =)

This place is a REAL DIVE, but the food was OUTSTANDING. I had the chicken mole (with rice and beans) coupled with two tacos. The mole was worth the trip alone. It had a subtle spiciness/sweetness to it. The tacos were good, but did not stand out considering all the other local options. Go here to EAT, not to dine.

Whenever I feel like truly authentic mexican and don't feel like cooking I go here. The spicy red chicharron is a must, but not for those not used to serious heat.
