Review from Ashley E.
Reno, NV
It's about time that I write a review for this place.
I love getting the black bean and green chile soup, and the tomato bisque. If I've had a super active day, I just go for it and get the bread bowl. Nothing better.
I usually get the grilled portobello sandwich, which is so good. The mushroom is always done really well and seasoned perfectly. I also really like the bread that they serve it on. The side salad that they serve is always fresh with the greenest greens, and delicious feta cheese. And how about that mini cookie? Just the perfect amount of sweet.
There was one occasion when they were super busy and ended up forgetting one of our orders. Not only did they recognize the problem, but the owner personally came over to apologize with complementary tiramisu. Would a simple apology have worked? Of course. Does it really say something that he went that far out of his way? Definitely. Other than that one time, I have never had any other problems. The servers are always really quick and friendly.
Is this place going to busy during the week day lunch hour? Yeah. So be ready for it. This is such a good sign though! Just make sure you have enough time, easy as that.
Keep doing what you do Sup. Love the new location, but do miss sharing tables with pleasant strangers. -
Review from Allison M.
San Francisco, CA
In most of my relationships, when something isn't right, I assume it's my fault. But I'm working on my communication skills in attempt to become a better negotiator, client counselor, and lawyer. And friend and girlfriend and daughter and sister. So here's what is on my mind:
I am a gigantic soup lover. I eat it almost every day. You can imagine that when I heard about Sup (long U sound), I was thrilled. The last time I came in (yesterday), all of our soups arrived warm-ish at best. My minestrone was so overly spiced with what tasted like old herbs (perhaps oregano flakes?) that I had trouble finishing the cup, even with my dunking roll (which costs extra). The other soups that the table ordered were the tomato bisque and the broccoli cheese. They both were okay in flavor- maybe a bit too salty for me- but they were served luke-warm, and as such, had started to congeal. The time before last, I had a black bean soup that was so thick that I wanted to also order a margarita and some tortilla chips.
Will I be back? Probably. Because not only do I want to compensate for this review, but also I want to find something I like, something I can rave about. There's a huge following, and a lot of positivity flowing in Sup's direction (see other reviews). I would love to jump on the band wagon in this case. But I just can't do it yet.
If you come during the lunch rush, you might consider sharing a table with strangers so that everyone can have a seat. Also, there are usually veggie/vegan options as well.
Sigh... I'm sorry? -

A great little find on our day trip to Reno. And little is the key word. This is an extremely popular joint deservedly but around lunch the line can be out the door and then some.
I had the Crawfish Gumbo in a bread bowl while my wife hit the jackpot with the beer cheese soup. She got the last cup available and boy was that a good thing. The food and portions were hearty yet delicious. The little cookie of course was an awesome suprise!
When the weather is nicer I am sure the deck is a happening place especially considering there was barely enough seating inside to handle the lunch rush.
I am not docking Sup for being popular but "with great power comes great responsibility" and they were a little slow on the ordering side and it took way too long to get a meal that consisted of soup (aleady made) and a quiche (already made). -
Review from Jada B.
I feel bad doing this, but after several really bad incidents at Sup in the last month, I have to update my review.
I ordered a turkey pesto sandwich and it arrived without any turkey. Seriously? It was corrected really pleasantly in a verrrrrrry slow fashion. But again, seriously?
A different time, my salad was served without dressing and my husband's chicken tortilla soup was served cold. Not lukewarm, cold. As in so cold the cheese didn't even begin to melt. Both problems were corrected in a reasonable amount of time, but by a waitress who was so unfriendly it came across as down right hostile. Also without a hint of apology.
Expect a wait of at least 45 minutes from the time you walk in the door until you get your food. Even if it's just a bowl of soup. Everything takes forever.
Management really needs to do something about their seating problem. At the very least, they need to not allow people to sit and take up a table before they've ordered, because you end up with a situation like we had the last two times we went, where we had ordered, paid, and are left standing waiting with drinks in hand for a table to vacate because other couples split up as soon as they walked in with one still in line waiting to order (a 15 minute prospect usually) while the other saved a table. Offer actual table service maybe or monitor the seating. Doubt it would work with a staff that serves cold soup and turkey sandwiches sans turkey, though.
And lastly, the thing that truly drives me crazy in light of the poor service I have consistently received since they moved - you pay before you receive any food or true service, and of course presumably tip because the tip line on your credit card slip is right there. How do I know how much to tip before I've received service?
But hey, the food is good once you finally get it and it's the off chance it's served correctly. Personally though, if I was seeking lunch in that part of town I'd opt for Campo or Old Granite Street Eatery.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

I'd really give this place 3.5 stars, but that's not an option.
Positives: nice decor, friendly staff, cozy atmosphere, large portions, good food quality
Negatives: I didn't much care for the tomato bisque soup I got; for a $6 bowl of soup I'd like a piece of bread on the side included, not for an additional $1.25.
On the flip side, the people next to me had some amazing-looking sandwiches and salads, so maybe I just choose poorly. I'll give Sup another try for the sandwiches or another type of soup.
Update: I went back to Sup last night for dinner. I got the grilled cheese, which was fine (if overpriced) and the broccoli-cheddar soup (also fine). I appreciated the side salad, which was tasty. I'm still underwhelmed by Sup--to me the price and the quality don't match up. Sigh. I really want to like this place. -

Well, I have to admit I missed out totally on the original location. Finally got into the new location a couple of times now. On my first visit, a tuna melt and broccoli cheddar soup made for a hearty and satisfying meal. Second visit I had a steak sandwich and tortilla soup. Super cool staff--very friendly and helpful. You order and pay at the counter, then they bring it out to you. There are some good beers in the cooler, and it wasn't until I was halfway through my meal the second time that I looked over and realized they also have wine. Atmosphere is very cozy--if you don't like to be around people you might be uncomfortable. If you're the kind of person who smiles and says hi, you will probably enjoy. Very pleased with my experiences there.

Their soup is good and their veggie sammich is good but jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez talk about over priced!!! I got scolded for sitting before I ordered like some 4 year old child. Some of the staff are just too cool and hip and they make it a point to make sure you know that. Seriously, if you want return customers provide us with good customer service, thanks.

Review from Jaime C.
Now that I'm moving in a couple of weeks, it's time to try out every restaurant I've been putting off! Süp was first on the list - who can say no to grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup on a blustering cold day?
Truthfully, I can't wait to go back - maybe this time not take it to go. By the time I got home, my grilled cheese was cold. It didn't stop me from enjoying it, but still! The tomato bisque was amazing, and reminded me of Bistro Jeanty, one of the Michelin star restaurants along Washington Street in Yountville. The only thing missing was a puff on the top!
Their menu is expensive, yes. That, and it seemed like they were busy because when I ordered my food to go, I swear I waited at least 15 minutes (for soup and a grilled cheese?). Everyone kept coming up to me and asking if I was in line...ugh. I hate being that person.
It's winter now, so I will try to be back soon. Their broccoli-cheddar, my dad's favorite kind of soup, smells amazing and I definitely want to try it. This time, if I order pumpkin strudel for dessert, I'm going to actually eat it (whoops..fucking brain cells. It looked delicious too!!). -

SUP
Lunch after the Museum today.
I know this place was recently made in to SUP but to me it feels oddly disjointed. If they do not do something about the front door the place will freeze each time someone comes in and out.
The employees are all energetic and friendly, good thing they have very slender folks working there as they would never fit between the tables if they were as amply endowed as I.
Now on to the food...
Oh how disappointing and I really mean that after all the good reviews I have read.
I ordered the split pea soup and a grilled cheese sandwich. The soup had no flavour, none. Split pea has very distinct flavour and this just tasted like warm water. The sandwich was uninspired at best and must have set for a time since it was room temp. But the salad that comes with the sandwich was very tasty as was the tiny cookie. I left most of the soup as I just was so disappointed it made the angels cry.
Others had the same soup and one had the cheese soup with a sandwich that was supposed to come on a baguette but it was on the cheese bread. I did taste the cheddar soup since the first slup brought a frown, to me it tasted like what burnt rubber smells like. Only half the sandwich was consumed as it was just not worth the calories to continue on.
Our portion of the bill came to about thirty bucks and I know I can find somewhere else for that price where I will want to finish my meal. -

I had one of the ickiest bowls of soup I've ever had in my life, here one day. I hope it was a fluke, but it tasted STRONGLY of artificial bullion or broth. Really nasty. It was broccoli cheese and I can honestly say that before that day I'd never had a broccoli cheese I didn't like. It was a huge disappointment.
However, everyone was nice, the service was good, the salad was delicious and I would go back if someone else in my party wanted to go. I wouldn't ever suggest it, though. -

I must admit I was surprised to find a decent place to eat in Reno. I'm sure there are little gems all over the city, tucked between the sleazy motels and run-down topless joints, but I havnt done too much exploring. The atmosphere was pleasant and the servers were personable and charming. My first impression was tempered by enticing smells and a restaurant full of people ( lots of pregnant women ?? Cravings for deliciousness I can only assume) with tasty looking soups, salads, and sandwiches. The soup and sandwich we had were killer. Would have rated it 5 stars but the special quiche we also shared was a bit over cooked. Definitely will be back when I find myself in your lovely city again.

I tried SUP for my first time a week ago and am really happy I finally did! it's really reminds of comfort places back in the bay area. I got the chicken tortilla which is my favorite and it was delish. I can't wait to go back, since I frequent Reno and try some of the sandwiches. If you are in the area, a for sure try!

Oh yummy! Stopped here after not wanting another run of the mill greasy restaurant experience and was not dissapointed.
Husband and I shared a tuna melt, grilled cheese and a cup of pork enchilada soup.
The immediate reaction is that everything is tasty. I did not had one bland bite of food and would go back in a heart beat.
My ONLY caveat to a great review is that it does get very busy at lunch time, making it a wait in a very small area, but I would prepare for this next time and call ahead!
Very happy with the fresh tasting fare here! -

Had a lunch meeting on Thursday. As always the food and service was very good.
BUT, OMG! The front door doesn't latch closed when pople are entering or exiting, leaving us, the patrons to close the door to the wind and draft. The Sup management and staff seem to be oblivios to this fact. While we are having our lunch on a cold day, myself and my companion had to shut the door five different times, and we were taking turns with the "door-persons", (the patrons at the first table nearest the door). What a nightmare! I will return to eat, but could you fix the door please? -

Newport Beach, CA
Very good food here, not what I expected for Downtown Reno cuisine. It is a bistro I'd expect to see in Los Angeles, San Francisco or Portland. Not something I'd expect in Reno. The ambiance is very calm and serene.
So the good was the food! I had the BBQ Chicken sandwich, my date had the Chicken Pesto sandwich and her daughter had the Tuna melt.
All were very good! The salads there amazing. They use dried cranberries that tasted VERY fresh, despite being dried. The portions were very ample and the service was excellent. Also, kudos to them for having a ample selection of healthy children's drinks. It's nice to have options other than the fountain drinks and Odawala drinks.
The only bad thing was the outdoor table. It was rather small for three trays on the table at the same time. And the parking situation was a little sketchy. Since it's on Virginia St street parking was not a reality, and we we were forced to park in the Quiznos parking lot which threatened of towing. There was a little pang of fear when a tow truck drove by on an unrelated mission.
All in all, great restaurant! I will DEFINITELY go here again, just maybe chose the parking a little better. -

Its a cute little soup and sandwich shop. The decor was like being in an art studio. You basically walk in, order, pay, then go sit down and they bring you your order. I had ordered the Turkey Pesto Sandwich with a pop, total was $11.57. I also included $1 tip. The sandwich itself wasn't overly impressive. I think it was mostly bread with a sliver of turkey, provolone, tomato, pesto dressing, and sprouts.

Been here three times and only ordered the tomato bisque, each and every time. It's that good. Hit it up. And it comes with the proper sized cookie (about the size of a peppermint patty) to not ruin the reason you're getting soup and not a burger...
Best tomato bisque I've ever had. -

WHAT A RIPOFF!!!
On my 1st visit in their new home,I strolled in one late afternoon
and I ordered one of their soups' of the day-black bean and let me tell you how disappointed I was after my order was placed-My soup arrived at my table and it was SO WATERED DOWN it was pathetic.I went thru 6 pkgs of crackers just for my cup of soup that I ordered. What I mean by saying "watered down" is that it was like 90% liquid and, just a FEW beans-I'm really glad I didn't order a bowl as I would have used way more crackers. For the cost, almost 4 bucks (inc tax) this place really needs to mix in more beans and less liquid in their soup. The one lone positive note was that the employees were very friendly, but try another place if you're in a soup mood.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Who the hell Copy/Pasted this Bay Area eatery into Reno?
This little place was a great surprise. I was led here by Yelp and as usual the reviews were spot on. Fresh delicious food in the middle of the demon's asshole they call Reno. Weird right? Prices may seem high, but you get a ton of food. A Sandwich is plenty for two people and comes with a salad and a cookie. The Pork Enchilada soup is the bee's tits. -

Had the Broccoli Cheddar in a bread bowl. The bread bowl itself was the freshest I've ever had and the soup is decent, but can't compare to Danny Perez's famous homemade recipe. But the ambience is classy and forward, with the feeling of a Bay Area bistro. I commend the owners for locating it near the Arts District in Downtown Reno instead of in a suburb somewhere. Each plate also comes with a fresh little cookie to top things off. I will definitely be returning to try the myriad of interesting options still untested. Props to the owners for having the courage to open a restaurant like this one in Downtown Reno.

Stopped in here to check out the new location. Was in a bit of a hurry, so I didn't get to fully enjoy and savor things, but the new deck is rad - stretches to the edge of the property on the north side, and there's probably seating for 30+ out there.
The interior is well done as well, with pretty much the whole building re-done. Nice wood flooring, bright colors and simple textures on the walls, with a room up front, and one on the side as well, probably close to three times the seating of the old location.
I had the turkey and rice with a wheat roll while sitting on the deck. As I said earlier, I was in a bit of a hurry, so I wolfed down the food, but it was tasty as usual.
I don't make it here near as often as I'd like, but it's perfect for when I'm looking for a lighter meal. I still need to try their sandwiches . . .Listed in: I heart Midtown

This place has fast become my favorite restaurant in Reno. Always good, always great service, nice atmosphere, I just love it.
I recently discovered their bread bowls. WOW. So good. A very generous portion of your favorite Sup soup in a huge crusty, warm, bread bowl with a soft inside, melts in your mouth. The best part is the "lid" of the bowl that comes on the side, it's like the heart of the artichoke, the top of the muffin, the center of the cinnamon roll, the tootsie roll in the center of the tootsie pop, the, well, you get the point.
My only problem is, it is so big, I will never get to taste the bottom of the bowl. Far too full by then.
So, how many slurps does it take to get to the bottom of the Sup bread bowl? The world may never know.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Very tasty sandwiches and soup at this Reno spot. We were in town visiting Lake Tahoe and spent some time in Reno before out flight. We found this place on yelp and had lunch here. The sandwiches were pretty good and the soups were very tasty. I highly recommend trying this place out if you're in the area.

I like the soup fine and since it's fairly close to my house, it's an easy and affordable option for dinner every once in awhile. I don't thinks it's the absolute best soup I've ever had, but it does the trick when I'm hungry and out of ideas for dinner. Unfortunately, pretty much every time I go, I always encounter one employee who is rude, and or/ has an attitude that is off putting. It's not always to me, sometimes I observe the rudeness to other customers. Either way, it is really disappointing. Being someone who was in the restaurant business for over 20 years, it makes my blood curdle. That kind of service reminds me want to spend my money elsewhere.

After trying to come here three other times, I was excited to finally make it at a time that it wasn't completely overcrowded. The first thing I noticed walking in was a very strong smell, which almost turned my friend off completely. After begging her to stay so I could try the fare, I ordered the Chicken Tortilla Soup.
I'm actually not sure how to describe it, as I'd say it was bland, but with one overpowering spice. None of my friends were particularly excited about their lunches, and even though I enjoyed the music played there (I wanted to do the robot during lunch) it didn't make up for the smell or the soup that was lacking in yumminess.
I'd come back to try one of their sandwiches, but I have to say I'm not too sure what all the hype is about. -

I just cant find consistancy here. To me, after having been to the new location several times, i think it was an overall very poor plan. The line forms through the MIDDLE of the dining room, i do not care to be crowded by people while trying to eat. Lunch hour has gotten quite popular (kuddos to them) but for this reason i now avoid it like the plague because i know there is a 95%chance that there will be no seating, and its definitely not good enough to wait. The extra seating they got outside can only be used about 40%of the year and there really isnt that much more additional seating inside than they had before. It also does not appear that they are able to efficiently cater to a large crowd in a timely fashion. Our last lunch took 30 minutes to arrive....for soup and salad! The soup, which should be their specialty is often not so special. I stopped ordering it all together since i find it to be so inconsistant and stick to their salads. My boyfriend has some kind of white cheddar soup and it was the blandest think ive ever tasted. Ive marked this off my list of lunch spots, ive given it enough tries and i can never count on anything to taste the same.....and its too expensive to be mediocre.

This place is so cute. It needs to relocate to the bay area ASAP.
Pesto Turkey: Seriously soooo delicious. Everything tasted very fresh, the pesto wasn't greasy or overwhelming, the turkey was moist, veggies all very fresh and the jalapeno bread added just the perfect amount of extra pizazz. $8.95 for a whole with a delish side salad w/cranberries, pecans & blue cheese and a tiny little oatmeal chocolate/peanut butter cookie to finish off the meal. 5 stars for this sandwich!
Chicken tortilla: I was a little disappointed. It was good and hit the spot after a long night of drinking but..... it was surprisingly lackluster in the spice/flavor department. Maybe I'm just a hater cause my chicken tortilla soup is so good. Hahaa -

The chicken coconut curry soup is absolutely the bomb. The only complaint, if it is one, is that this place can get a little bit busy. That's probably because it's the only restaurant of it's kind in the area, and they really do provide a niche, quality product worth the wait. The service is always good, and I get a real sense of ownership from the employees.

I had lunch here the other day and was reminded of how awesome this place is, kicking myself for not coming more often. The first time I tried Sup's soup was at a Museum event they were serving samples at. That was when I had their amazing heirloom tomato gazpacho... that was over a year ago and I still remember how tasty it was.
I haven't been a regular at Sup just because it's a little out of my daily routine. When I do make it there, I get a half sandwich and cup of soup and am always impressed. Couple of days ago I stopped by and tried the carrot ginger soup (vegan!) with a half of club sandwich. The soup was satisfying and the sandwich had perfectly cooked chicken and crispy bacon on it. Every lunch is the perfect plate of soup, salad, and sandwich. Their cookies are delicious too (homemade!). They have wide variety of beverage options too. This is gourmet stuff.
The service here is always relaxed and friendly. I've had so much terrible service in this town lately that I found it refreshing. At about $11 for soup, salad, a half sandwich, cookie, and a drink, I feel like this is a good value for the quality. This is a local business which is easy to support: consistent and so damn good. Best lunch in Reno. A+Listed in: Ode to MidTown

This place is great, period.
Kasey and Christian really hit one out of the park with Sup. Before it was in place, there simply was nothing like it in Reno, and that made lunch sort of a chore as opposed to something to be relished.

I love yelp when im on vacation for places like this. We were looking for something healthy on our trip and tired of all the fried food and buffets I yelped for a salad and I recieved this. I dont know how I went through life without this place.
Very cute small resturant. I expected to come in and get a deli style sammy. I ordered a cup of the tomato bisque and a side of their house salad. It was AMAZING. The soup was that melt in your mouth homestyle soup, best I have ever had. The salad wasnt just a iceburg salad with those shredded carrots. It was a cranberry and gorgonzola cheese with a leaf lettuce. Oh and a white vinaigrette. I subsituted the gorgon cheese for feta because im not a big fan of the stinky cheese. It was all really good.
someone else got the petsto turkey sandwich which comes with the house salad as well as the grilled cheese. none of these are just basic salads sandwichs or soup. It also only costed us 22$ for 3 people.
And if anyone knows how i can get the recipe for this soup please tell me! I am now obsessed with it. -

We wanted a healthy "non casino" dinner on Saturday night, January 22nd so we turned to Yelp like we always do when we are traveling. Sup had great reviews so off we went.
The restaurant is small and welcoming. We were warmly greeted. The decor is modern and they have good music playing.
Since we are trying to eat less we decided to share the Crab and Shrimp Salad and each get a cup (small bowl really) of soup. My husband had the Tomato Bisque and I had the Chicken Tortilla. The soups are homemade, fresh and very good. We mentioned that we were going to share the salad, but didn't ask that they split it. I figured we'd just do it at the table. When they served the food they brought two plates with very large salads on them...plated beautifully. I looked at my husband and thought YIKES, they gave us EACH a salad. Nope, they split it for us and the salad was a HUGE one. It was very good and more than enough food. The little cookies that they place on your plate are the best cookies I've had in ages...and they are just enough to satisfy your need for sweetness.
Sup will definitely be a stop for us, lunch or dinner, anytime we are in Reno...I suggest you add it to your MUST DO list as well! Enjoy! -

Not bad, not great. The outdoor seating is ample and not so bad other than the fact that you are right on top of the main drag (S. Virginia) which can be annoying at times. Went with my wife and she got the "chopped salad" & I got the "steak baguette."
The chopped salad was not chopped, it was some variation of a chef salad which was rather upsetting. I (we) have ordered chopped salads in places from NY to San Fran. and never have I been served a chopped salad that was not chopped. This is not to say it was bad, just not what is listed on the menu. IMO her salad was better than my sandwhich.
The Steak Baguette was mediocre, especially for $11.00. It had plenty of steak & onions, just not much flavor. It also comes with what I assume is supposed to be some sort of side salad. (I'm looking at you pathetic pile of lettuce scraps on my plate.) The whole thing was rather underwhelming. I've had steak sandwiches from Coney Island that I felt were better and far cheaper.
Overall a little pricey for what you get but not terrible. Kinda middle of the road. A once is enough kind of place.
