Drink specials... cool people and a laid back atmosphere... what more could any Miami local ask for in a bar...
I often visit the Sunset Tavern during the week just to catch up with friends or if I'm taming a craving for one of their yummy quesadilla's (southwestern hold the sprouts is my fav)!!
They've recently been trying to spruce the place up a bit, but they haven't taken away from its charm...
My least favorite bar in the Town of Pleasant living. There is nothing really wrong with it, I just do not feel comfortable here and it is way too smoky; even just passing through, I stink of cigarettes for the rest of the night...
The few times I was not able to stay at an outside table, the pool table was always busy, a good number of, seemingly, regulars at the bar and rock music from the stereo. They also serve some free snack around happy hour time.
I like the outdoor seating that is connected to Deli Lane next door, but prefer to just go there directly. If I have a say in the cheap drink locale for the night, I choose Fox's or Bougie's up or down the road...
My 30-mile journey from North Miami-Dade to South Miami to attend a yelp beer tasting was met with utter disappointment when I arrived an hour and a half after the tasting started - sorry Maria!
So, to salvage the lenthy, 45-minute trip, I hung out and had a few rounds at this cozy bar with plenty of beers on tap - and bottle - for the purest of beer lovers.
As I arrived, I circled the area to find off-street parking, which was pretty tight. The place is nice and spacious - it was ladies night - so I had to wear a wristband. Don't know what that was about since, obviously, I'm not a lady.
The service was pretty good despite the place being close to jam-packed. And the beer was cold and fresh. The men's bathroom was a bit dirty and messy, but since it was my first time there, maybe it was a one-time thing.
There's also an outdoor seating area for those brave enough to down a cold one is suffocating humidity. The jukebox had plenty of good tunes and the vibe was pretty inviting. Not my favorite place but a reasonable watering hole to have a beer and some wings.
Best happy hour in town based on service and price. Free food which is always nice. Some times good ,sometimes not so special at other timesbut free never the the less.
But recently they have jazz playing on Monday Night Football which is ridiculous considering people want to see football for the only 4 months we have it. Jazz is great but think it should be put on another night. The place is great overall, friendly staff, great happy hour, nice crowd.
Came here for their first ever Beer Tasting Event last Thursday.
The event, overall, I enjoyed. They explained all the beers and where they were from and the history of the breweries. They had giveaways and trivia questions. Very fun.
The food: not so great. We (the bf and I) ordered the potato skins. OMG! The worst potato skins ever! We also sampled their buffalo wings and barbecue wings. Buffalo wings were TOO salty and not good at all. The barbecue wings were better but not great. The chicken panini and fries were good. Ok. The chicken panini was VERY good and the fries were ok. Made me wish we had gone to The Irish Times for food.
The service: good. I mean they were VERY attentive. However, I asked for a beer, Brooklyn Lager, which I mistook for another beer I liked in the tasting. So, I asked our waitress if she could please exchange it (partnered with a million apologies. I never want to piss off a waiter/tress). She then proceeded to give me major attitude for the remainder of our stay. The other two waiters we had, which had to fetch her plenty of times, were MUCH better.
So, good for drinks. Especially for their tasting events. Not good for food. And ok service.
I would recommend their tastings. Pretty cool.
This is my favorite bar in South Miami and I love how relaxed this place is. You can either sit inside, outside, or at the bar and the staff is usually pretty friendly. The food is suprisingly delicious since it is brought straight over from Deli Lane next door.
My favorite is to try the Drink of the Day since it's usually some sort of fruity concoction and at a cheaper price that usual cocktails. Last time I also noticed that they have free food buffet's sometimes during happy hour - that's definitely something to check out! I really don't know what more you could ask for at your local Tavern.
Sunset Tavern, much like everything in life, should be taken in moderation. Damn near half the time I go here, I end up at BT's, whether I want to or not. The late night menu is getting a little weak, but it's still decent food for decent prices. The Tavern isn't short on redeeming qualities, though...they're open til 5, boast cheap drinks, beers on tap, they're close to my house and have copious amounts of covered outdoor seating. It's very much a late-night locals dive, as i can't throw a rock in there without hitting someone I know.
IMPORTANT: Thursday nights are ladies night....but really...THURSDAY NIGHT IS LESBIAN NIGHT. Don't get your panties in a bunch when you show up looking to score and realize all the girls with shaved heads aren't into your chest hair.
TIP: Ask about the nightly drink specials, they've always got 'em.
Based on my first-time experience with Sunset Tavern, I can say I'm a fan. I went for a close friends birthday party and the whole event was very successful. The waiters were friendly and attentive and didn't seem to be annoyed by the amount of people packed into the two booths we had.
The bartenders were also quick with the drinks and more than happy to give out plenty of limes, straws, napkins and other drink necessaries.
The music was great, albeit a bit loud for how small the place is.
The outside seating looks perfect for those groups that aren't into the indoor ruckus.
All in all, I think I'll be coming back soon to check out food offerings and weeknight specials. :D
Haven't been to this place in a while until last night. A few of us Yelpers headed here after the Yelp Event at Irish Times and enjoyed some good food (I ordered the Veggie Quesadilla) and drinks.
Service can be a bit of a wait, but it's nothing to really get too peeved about. They also had a live performer inside singing 90's classics. Overall I've always enjoyed this place. Just a place to sit back and relax with great food, drinks, and company.
Plus, there's one thing I think will never get old while sitting outside this place - seeing all the horribly executed parallel parking attempts
This is a dive(ish), college/neighborhood bar with outdoor seating. It is also a reliable, never fail option for last minute plans with friends when everyone just wants to relax, sit outside, and not be hassled.
The fact that this place is adjacent to Deli Lane and they share a kitchen means way better than average bar food.
Service tends to run slow so just run inside and order something. Also feel free to move around the tables to suit your party of five, ten, fifteen. Ok maybe fifteen is a little much but you get my point.
Sunset Tavern is the bar that adjoins Deli Lane down in South Miami. You can get their whole menu in the bar though, in case you don't want to sit out on the patio in the sweltering summer heat.
The Tav (as my friends and I affectionately called it) used to have Ladies' Night on Thursdays, but I'm not sure if they still do. My old roommate used to frequent it 'cause she could stumble back to our apt without worrying about drunk driving or cab money. Unfortunately, I used to have class way too early on Fri mornings, so I didn't get to go as often as I'd like. Though, on any night, the Tav is great for good, cheap beer, and delicious food.
Sunset Tavern is your everyday bar with a pool table, big booths and a pretty big outdoor seating area. The bartenders are quick and make good CHEAP drinks.
Thursday night is ladies night (2 hours of free well drinks and beer for the girls) -- you'll find your local miami lesbian drama there in large doses. if you're homophobic stay away. if you're one of the few miami lesbos with class, you'll learn to stay away as well (present company included ;) If you can't tell who are the lesbians, they'll be the ones drinking bud light.
Anyway--- my favorite time to go to sunset tavern is on sunday mornings for the eggs benedict.... Sunset Tavern is attached to the restaurant portion called Deli Lane. You'll see people waiting forever on saturdays and sundays to get a table, but you can actually just go in and grab a booth inside Sunset Tavern and get served the same food. The downside-- the service sucks and is super slow and if you sit inside, there may be smoking.
As everyone says the food is the best part about this place. I ordered the chicken wings the last ime I was there and they do not offer different heat levels and they sure were hot, which is the way I like them, but be careful if you do not like spicy foods. I say just go for a good meal and sit outside and enjoy the weather as I have never found the bartenders inside to be very friendly, but the inside is not too bad if you are going with someone you want to have a conversation with.
ive gotten tipsy at this place before ... hell, ive gotten trashed at this place before, true story. maybe twice or six times back in 2004 ... but last sunday was a different story, i came here for brunch and man .. what a lovely story, not that getting drunk at sunset tavern is not lovely .. im just saying...
we got there like at 1pm and the place was packed! i forget the name of our waitress but she was so cute and helpful and she was so busy!.. i got an orange juice (fresh) and joan marie got a mimosa... i got a yummy sandwich with on french bread with eggs and bacon, came with fries ... joan got the eggs benedict and i was jealous because that was SO good!!! so because i was a little bit jealous, i ordered some buttermilk pancakes but i didnt wanna get a full order ... so our waitress suggested to get the kids portion and that was just fine. i needed some maple syrup to forget about how good those eggs were ...and joan got another mimosa... just because.
grand total $30 before gratuity and again, our waitress was so nice. she even got us some quarters that we needed for the parking meter... ill be back for brunch for sure!
The people at Sunset Tavern are very friendly. It was a very chill and relaxed atmosphere to cap the night after being in the crowded Grove all night.

Sunset Tavern is an awesome place to hang out with friends. I used to come here after serving… Read more »
This is another one of those bars that if it was anywhere else in the United States, it might not be that big a deal. But, like alot of "normal" places in Miami, it's a diamond in a rough simply because you can hear yourself speak and it's not over-run with meat-heads.
In any case, Sunset Tavern has outside seating, which, in non-South Beach Miami, believe it or not, is rather rare. The jukebox is good, and the drinks are cheap(-ish). More importantly, both inside and outside the bar, you can actually hear yourself speak! What a concept!
Plus, my friend Heather works there, and she is cuh-ute. But I don't know if she's single. There are other cute waitresses there too, though.
ahhh deli lane/sunset tavern... how many days i spent here during college. breakfast in the morning... drinner and drinks at night(especially if one of my guy friends dragged me to go watch some game)... but forget the food for a second...
LADIES NIGHT ON THURDAYS. hey, you can't beat the penny drinks!!! though in the past few years, ladies night at deli lane/sunset tavern has become "the unofficial secret lesbian hangout" much to the confusion of a lot of my guy friends.
maybe i shouldn't have shared the secret ;) so say 'hi' if you see me
as far as a college bar goes this is it. as for as a bar that has cheap drinks (well as far as miami goes) this is it. wide selection (sapporo beer! sweet!), a staff that knows what they are doing, and a good atmosphere make this place just feel right. now that the vanilla stuff is done here's the nitty gritty, thurs is Lez night, and whatever it's not like its exclusive. and sunday nights here are awesome (i have no idea where they found the dj but she plays old! school house; how cool is that? way cool) and happy hour is midnight till around 2am. dig it.
