One of my favorite places in San Diego. I always take guests here. Come out here at low tide and poke at all the little starfish and crabs in their little hidey holes, or just find a little cliff to sit around by yourself - or with your dog, friends, family. Whatever.

Jessica: Let's go cliff diving at Sunset Cliffs!

Benito: Sure sounds fun, what could go wrong

::SPLASH::

Both: Whoooo that was fun

Dolphin jumps OVER both of them then swims out to sea

Jessica: I'm, gonna go chase after it! (Jessica is a lifeguard)

Benito: Um, how do I get back up? Hello?

The point of the story? Don't listen to hippy chicks.

I'm a sucker for the beach. And sunsets. And watching sunsets at the beach.

Love coming here with Nate. It's a great place during the day, sunset, or even stargazing.

I live a few blocks from the cliffs and it never gets old. It reminds me of how beautiful life is. One Christmas I  was walking here and an elderly woman with a cute dog looked at me said "isn't it wonderful" It being how beautiful everything was. She couldn't have been more right. Aside from walking or biking here I like to get food eat it in the car and watch people surf. Some amazing surfing takes place here.

Don't litter.

If you are feeling a little adventurous to get out of the car at Sunset Cliffs on a date, scale down a few of the "cliffs" and out to the furthest point on the rocks. Pretty incredible at sunsets. And you are far enough away from everyone else that it gives a sense of "we are the only ones on the beach" :) Beautiful. Just getting back up the cliff in the dark definitely could be a bit better, but that's what you date is for. If you fall down on the way up with him behind you, both of you are in for some pretty nasty wounds to the knees and hands.

in my attempt to get tanned i thought it would be a great idea to go to sunset cliffs and do a little topless sun bathing... it was nice...
the sun was not as intense as i thought it would be... i layered myself with three layers of sun screen in order not to come back from the beach burnt.. . well to my dismay i had to leave, the gawks and the stares were starting to make me uncomfortable.  so i placed my top back on and away i went...
still no tan and smelling like sun screen....

thanks to all the  bois for whistling made me feel good about myself!

I always hit up this place to relax and remind myself of the Pacific Oceans beauty... and then I defile it by carving my name into the rock! This place has plenty of parking, and a great place to watch time fly away. Bring a lunch, hit up the Jack In The Box before you get a spot and listen to the crashing wave wipe away the thoughts. Make-out point is there ever was one! Try not to bother the cars after the sun goes down... wink wink.

I'm sure if i lived in san diego, I would be here whenever I need to clear my head or relax, or want o bring friends. Ir's that great!!

Amazing, everyone says the same about Sunset Cliffs- amazing, breathtaking, beautiful, clears your mind and your spirits, makes you want to do a little jig for joy in being able to revel in the sunshiney splendor of the cliffs... well... ladies and gentlemen, its ALL true! :) I frequently run here, start in one of the parking lots, run towards the end, up the hill and then up the trails and onto the road up to Point Loma Nazarene college! It makes long runs painless since you have such great views! If you are in the mood for a 7-8 mile run, keep running through Point Loma college, and onto 209 hwy, cross over and go down to the harbor (that hill is insane but its a great challenge)! Then turn back around and loop back, viola, you end up at Sunset Cliffs (just don't let it get too late because the spot between the end of Sunset cliffs and Point Loma Nazarene is unlit trails.)

The Cliffs are really cool place for a hike or a leisurley stroll. You can explore around and get some really nice pictures. There are a couple spots to park and you can get out and look over some amazing, scary cliffs that could erode away where you stand. For the bold you can folllow several paths that will eventually take you down some stairs to a very rock beach. Kind of cool because once you are down there the sound of the waves crashing envelopes you.  I like to come here at night on a full moon, or to watch the sunset after a long day.

One of the most beautiful locations in all of San Diego! There are tide pools that are pretty awesome to check out, my dad used to take us kids here every weekend. You can pull into a parking lot and watch the sunset or get out and explore. It's a huge surf spot for the experienced surfers and towards the Point Loma side of Sunset Cliffs there's a beach you can rally down to (if you're into scaling down cliffs) and have a party.

Everyone will wonder where the secret passage is but I'm not telling...

Yep everyone can agree this place is serene and peaceful. The sound of the waves hitting on the rocks will clear your mind and the sight of the water crashing into the cliffs melts away stress. PLUS its a great fishing spot! Just go on out and throw in your line.
I went down last time to look for a new beach and realized that some of the rocks are cut up perfectly like a beach chair...without the hassle of sand in your butt!
Early mornings or sunset...top notch. Man I love living here.

This place has pretty thick kelp beds from about 0-20 feet,  then open sand, then kelp from 30-70 feet out, so know that.  Spearing is spotty at best, because the sediment rarely calms down enough for anything better than 15 foot vis.  Seems to always be a lot of clay in the water from the cliffs I suppose.  The surf can be great, but is pretty dependant on tides and conditions, so check the report and know before you go.

All in all, unless you know this spot very well, there are probably other places to shoot for. ;)

Sunset cliffs is alright but nothing that great.   If you climb down to the beach,  you will find that the place stinks like the Tijuana river,   but the cool part is that you can drink beers and smoke whatever you want without worry.    Cops do not climb down the cliffs to the beach.    Not good for kids.

Love this place.

It is great for picnics, walks, running & watching the sunset. There are people hanging out and exploring the cliffs. The surf is pretty consistent, though the paddle out is a killer. Parking is pretty easy since it is a rich neighborhood. It is great solo, with family, friends or the out-of-towners. It is nice to get away from the city streets...even if it is just a few blocks away. =)

Sunset Cliffs is such an amazing place. Unfortunately, there was no sunset when I went because of the overcast. But, that didn't stop my group of friends and I from doing some exploration.

We first took in the beautiful sights that is the Pacific Ocean (and the dream homes that line the cliffs). We explored from the top of the cliffs.

We then found a "path" to head to the bottom. That was the easy part. We got the bottom and realized that you could totally use the open beach for hanging out, relaxing, or having a private bonfire. However, we didn't think about how we would get back up. I was the first to go back part way up, until my shoes were slipping down the rocks and I ended up being the 2nd to last to climb back up the cliffs.

Make sure to wear shoes that can grip and won't cause you to slip. Make sure that when you go down any rocks or cliffs for that matter, to make sure that you are willing and able to climb back up or else you'll be totally screwed and stuck by yourself on the bottom of a cliff. I wasn't prepared myself to scale down a cliff and back up it, so make sure you are just mentally prepared for that!

Other than that, enjoy the beauty of the cliffs!

Great spot. Very pretty at sunset, obviously. Nice night spot as well but beautiful anytime. Quiet, calm, non touristy. It's best to walk up. Nice picnic spot. When I was a little girl, my dad took me here often.
Great place to explore! It's kind of a "local" spot, but one not to miss if you are ever in San Diego.

Roughly 20 years of my existence and I've only been here twice.

"It's rather picturesque," she said with a British accent.

5 stars for falling on my ass.
5 stars for the work-out my friend and I got from walking and climbing.

The friendly "hellos" and "how are yous?"
I like nice people.
Nice people+nice view= happy mel.(not to be mistaken with happy meal)

So thankfully I didn't slip near the edge of the cliffs more on the path where the plants were. Got a good laugh out of that.

My friend(Chris) and I were a little skeptical about going through this one path until we saw some surfers go through and decided to play stalker.

We lost track of them but saw them about 50 yard away but went our own way.

The people watching is great.

Definitely hits the spot.

Oh yeah and I REALLY HAD TO PEE. So keep driving on Sunset Cliffs Blvd until you come to a dirt/asphalt kinda road, hooray for port-a-potties. NOTE TO SELF: never look inside.
Park there and begin your adventure.

Got lost going here the second time, I wanted to share San Diego with someone close. Aside from the first time, this time I was forced to go near the edge, reluctantly. I hated it but I loved it. I guess I am afraid of heights...

"NOICE!"

Dont mean to sound "corny" or anything but this place is Simply Breathtaking.. Ok that sounded corny =/

Anyways, this is a great place to come when your stressed or having a bad day. I try to come by here once a week for a few minutes on my lunch break just to clear my head. You dont even have to get out of your car, just roll down your windows... pop the top.. take a deep breath and drive slowww. Or you can park and just chill for a bit.

Grab a guy or a girl (or both!). Head out here about a half hour before sunset (which you can look up online). Then stand around you can also add the optional 7-Eleven Jungle Juice Mix. Remember that alcohol is not the most legal thing to have outside at those parts. Although you see a few old timers sipping wine out there.

Get a little liquored up and watch the sunset. Afterwards you will probably be in like flint for a sweet make out session. But if your not into that kind of thing you can always climb down parts of the cliffs. Note: This can get pretty dangerous. There are also sea caves at the bottom which you can walk to when the tide it low. Note: This is even more dangerous.

The safe bet is to stay on the approved walking and viewing areas and just enjoy the view. But if you are a bit crazy like me then feel free to run around as you please.

How the hell does SC fall under "Swimming Pool."

Now, thanks to whoever did that, tourists are going to come in boardshorts ready for a dip.

They will jump off a cliff, thinking it's a diving platform. I'd think that too if I never saw an ocean in my life.

Tourists, stay away from SC. San Diegans only =)

Gorgeous.  Mellow.  Serene.  Great surf (or so I hear from more experienced surfers).  Picturesque.

I'm really happy that I was shown this spot, because it's just plain beautiful.  I definitely plan on coming here when I want to be active and go for a run among some serious scenery (or when I work up to it, go out for a surf); but I also like that this appeals to me when I'm in the mood to chill out and do absolutely nothing... besides marvel at the view, of course.

It's nice that there are places like this where you can still get away...

Just be careful of when you go though, god forbid you make that trek down the hill just to get stuck with some rambunctious loser kids that think their antics are welcomed by everyone.

Oh... and if you DO go - pick up your freakin' trash when you leave.

Sunset cliffs is a great place to visit either from the car at one of the lookout points or on foot.  Check out Hill St.  It is really steep and offers a great view.

Low Tide!! Most people don't know about this.  ~ 2x a year low tide will come at a reasonable hour ~ like 3pm vs 5am or 12 mid night etc.  You will be able to walk out to the "caves" not really caves but hollowed out spaces in the cliffs.  (see photos).

Hit I-8 all the way west until it ends, and keep going straight, and you'll find yourself... in the trash heaps of OB. But keep going! It gets better, I promise - once you find yourself looking at the ocean horizon and wondering where the earth suddenly falls off, you're there. There's plenty of parking for blocks along the cliff edge.

Once you get out, you'll wonder why you've never taken in one of THE MOST amazing spots San Diego has to offer. Ocean breeze, waves crashing against the cliffs, and a setting sun make for an 'instant vacation' if you ever want to get away from it all and just be one with your world. Or your date.

This was the first beach that I went to in San Diego, and it's by far my favorite (maybe my favorite place in the whole world actually!).

Sunset Cliffs is a series of huge cliffs with water down below, and houses above it.  There are a lot of small trails and places to sit along the way.  It's incredibly romantic, and a great place to have a picnic lunch.  There's plenty of places to park nearby, and you can find a quiet spot to just sit and reflect almost anytime (except during the summer when it's super hot).

If I can ever afford it, I'm buying a house on Sunset Cliffs drive.

When I used to live on Del Monte Ave, some afternoons I'd walk down to the Cliffs to watch the sunset.

What would be great was the amount of neighbors who had the same idea.  We'd all sort of greet each other in that OB-cean way of being friendly, but not overwhelmingly so.

It was a very communal experience.  About five minutes after the sun set, we'd all go back to our collective homes.  But for that time, out on the cliffs, it was a wonderful experience that you don't see enough in Southern California.

If you have friends coming to San Diego, try to make it there in time for the sunset.

OB is a little out of my way, so I've only driven by and walked around the pier a little. The views are awesome, and it is a great place for people watching. Lots of tourists. One of these days I will go on a run here.
Edit: 3/14/08
I ran here last night andt he view of the sunset is gorgeous! This place is a great run during sunset, but it's not hard to get lost if you don't know your way around OB after dark. If you want  a good hill to run up, Hill St. is a good one.

Having people come together to enjoy something as beautiful, natural and ephemeral as the sunset leaves one with a (slightly) better view of humanity.  Plus it's free.

And I completely agree with Amy C.'s comments on what this place is good for.
