I read many of the reviews here and have discovered there are many out of work comedians who work in their gardens.
I guess i am biased because I have worked at retail nursery's and although the customer is always right, some are insane.
So many complain that the sunset blvd nursery is a bit pricey, these is little parking, the staff mocks me...
Whaaaaa!!!!
My experience here has always been that the staff is knowledgeable, and have a good sense of humor. The prices are higher because small local businesses cant compete with the mass buying power of the box stores, and obviously dont have a huge parking lot.
I love the fact that they have a large variety of quality of potting soils, not just the over priced Miracle grow crap.
I found Fox Farms soil here that many of you know will grow your "Herbs" very well!
They have a Drought tolerant plant section, with experts who know about them,
They have a arborist Jamie who knows her stuff who will answer questions for you. ( Try to hire one to come to your house and see how much you will pay for the service)
They have a water garden area with more pumps filters and plants than most larger nursery's have. The"big guy" who runs it is quite funny i think he used  be a stand up comedian or something. As far as the prices, you wouldn't go to a fancy restaurant and complain to the waiter," I could get this cheaper at macdonalds.." get some class.

I go here because it is close by and they have a good selection of flowering plants, vegetable plants and citrus trees.  I love looking at their succulents selection and the many many flower pots.  It seems the supplies are all pretty expensive, and for that, I never buy too much of them.  I'll stop in for a big bag of soil, the vegetable plants and seeds pretty often, but everything else, I tend to look elsewhere first.

They seem pretty knowledgeable about plants, but some of the workers have an air of superiority.  The white dude in the baseball cap is really nice, and I ask questions anyway, but I never feel completely at ease there.

I feel like I get scammed at this place...
I want to support local businesses but why should I pay $5 - 20 more?
The staff are smart though... so smart that it makes you feel like a dumbass when you ask questions about plants/products.

This place is fun if you know what you're doing/want and don't have to interact with the staff.

I use to think this place was great [for it's size] and I would visit it about once or twice a month- but lately I've been visiting tons of nurseries around the greater Los Angeles area and it literally made me not want to take a second glance at this place.

Last time I visited it, I just said to myself "forget this" and just walked to OSH ( about 1.5 mile away )

They dont have the cheapest prices in the world but they have a fine selection of both indoor and outdoor plants.  Plus the staff is extremely helpful and knowledgeable.  At least they had enough patience to explain to me how I manage to kill every house plant I get :)

Like some of the other places I love to frequent, Sunset Nursery is a bit pricey.  That said, the selection is admirable for being in the armpit of two busy streets. The service we're received there is always very knowledgeable and friendly.  I've never had a problem parking and feel the prices are worth it knowing the plants won't die once I get them home.  I highly suggest this nursery to friends and neighbors.

I've driven by this place soooo many times and really needed some advice on a dear plant of ours. We've had it for 5 years and it suffered trauma from our kitty pushing it off the ledge and it's been stuck at 1 inch tall for years now.

When I arrived with The Gringo (we got the clipping from Dos Gringos in DC) a woman laughed at it and said I should just get a new plant.

What a meanie.

I told her no, I want this plant to grow and she asked if I had been giving it nutrients. D'OH! I didn't know that was something I was supposed to do. Well, it's been maybe a month and a half now and The Gringo has grown to about 3.5 inches and is sprouting out.

YAY! It's alive!

The man behind the counter was much nicer and saw the potential...but The Gringo still needs some therapy because of the mean woman. We'll work on that though.

I WILL NEVER GO TO ANOTHER NURSERY EVER AGAIN.

I recently moved to a new apartment where I have room to garden, so I had to start a garden from scratch. Tools, pots, soil, plants, seeds, bulbs, weed killer, etc. I bought some windowboxes and tools online, and got the rest of the stuff at Home Depot and at Orchard Supply Hardware.  When I finished planting everything, I still had one three-foot windowbox empty.  I decided to check out Sunset Nursery because I live nearby; I had avoided them previously because of the yelp reviews here that said they were "pricey."

I swear to God, my jaw dropped when I got there.  All the plants were huge and healthy. The flowers were in full bloom. The variety was unbelievable. The herbs were robust. The staff approached me to see if I had any questions, answered all my questions effectively, and loaded up my car after I'd made my purchase.  Yes, the plants and the soil are a little more expensive than what I found at the big chain hardware stores, but I found my windowboxes for cheaper than what I'd purchased them online!  Also, five of the plants I bought at the hardware store last month have already died.  Several more are stunted. I should have forked over a couple extra bucks ($3.25 per six pack of perennials vs. $1.75 per six pack of perennials) and gone to Sunset Nursery in the first place.

I definitely feel like I get my money's worth there.  And I feel good about supporting a local business.

Sunset Nursery is always worth the drive from WeHo to Silverlake. Standard offerings are reinforced with a multitude of unique specimens (green kangaroo paws!). They also specialize in waterscaping and orchid supplies and have a good selection of decorative pots.

I always go to Home Depot for my flowers or plants but after finding this joint, I don't think Home Depots gonna cut it anymore!!! All the plants and flowers here are very very healthy and well taken care off. The staff was extremely knowledgeable about everything in the nursery. There prices are really reasonable compared to other nurseries I've been to. They also have a pretty good selection of flower pots in the back area. I ended up buying a beautiful fern for only 10 bucks.

You'll find most of the staff here friendly and quite knowledgeable.  I recommend the Plant Success.  It has made all my plants do quite well.  They are a bit pricy, but I don't have a wholesale license and I'm not going to Home Depot so it is what it is.  You do need to select your plants well here.  Not all of them are in perfect condition.  Again the staff will help you pick the best ones.  Good luck and happy planting!

It's not the size that matters....it's the quality.  This place is filled with very nice and hard to find plants.  The people here are mostly helpful.  Slightly pricey.

More expensive than most. Friendly staffs, except "the fat guy" Stay away from him, he got attitude (if he is not happy helping people he should find another job). Still, poor customer service for the price they are charging. Super small nursery even smaller parking lot. But they have hard to find stuff here.

What a fantastic place. Was looking for a friendly nursery with knowledgeable staff and boy, did they score on all points! Spoke with Alan for hours about plants, environments for them, in LA and in Delhi. He was absolutely helpful and we walked away with four boxes of things!

looking at the cactus gift that i received from my az trip, i was gonna pop by the hollywood home depot for some soil and a pot. but good ol' yelp saved me from lots of misery! sunset nursery is da bomb. a bit hard to find (for me as i look at the numbers and not the signs, duh) but they are so knowledgeable! the gal who helped me suggested special cactus mix (don't think they'd have that at home depot) and explained to me why i should get the right-sized pot (as opposed to something bigger in anticipation of growth). she also saved my cactus roots from rotting as she suggested that i air out the plant for a week. thank you sunset nursery for ensuring that my little friend lives! :D

my mother and i used to make visits to the nursery all the time. now, not so much. they are still a bit pricey but they carry some of the more unusual types of flowers and plants. the atmosphere is what does it. it seems real "nice"...peaceful and pleasant.
