As my husband and I sat back, unbuttoning our jeans and smiling from the food high after our meal at Sunrise Deli last Sunday, I realized I had never Yelped this place. How that is possible, I do not know, but today, I will make it right.
Sunrise Deli is very unassuming in appearance, but kicks so much ass when it comes to customer service with a smile and food way beyond the scope of "deli sandwiches" that five stars just isn't even fair here.
We used to live just up the street and were told about Sunrise Deli by our landlord, who was then promising to make the drive from Bonita for his beloved lunches, because nothing in his new neighborhood could match Sunrise. Now, we make the trek from just east of downtown for the same reason -- and it is worth every mile of the drive.
Sunrise Deli looks like a little hole in the wall with just a handful of parking spaces out front and in the back, signs made of construction paper on every surface with additional menu items (ranging from steak sandwiches to spaghetti with meatballs) and an extensive menu with dozens of choices of traditional deli sandwiches, creative hot dog creations and hamburgers with every topping you could imagine.
But the super-secret goodness is their breakfast, and although their signs say breakfast is only served until 10:30am on weekends, they have always been willing to stretch the rules and serve us up chilequiles (my husband says they are as good, if not better, than his mom's!) and my all-time fave -- eggs Benedict with crispy hash browns. Huge portions of fresh, amazing food. For $4.95 each!
Beware that they don't take cards, though -- cash only!
My man swears their strawberry milkshake is better than any on the planet and in my eyes, this family-run establishment can do no wrong. I would gladly drive a hundred miles for this place and will continue to as long as they continue to provide the amazing food!
A great place to get cheap good food!
$6.99 for a steak sandwich with fries & drink - such a great deal!!
There are also tons of specials on the board which are $5 (this includes a side item & drink)
If you are ever in the area you need to check it out. It's a true local favorite.
Good hole in the wall eats
Great sandwiches and fries certainly one of our favorite dives.
Grilled Shrimp Sandwich! Bubba would have been proud (Forrest Gump reference...sorry)
I was in the neighborhood working, always wanted to check this place out because it looks rundown and dirty, lol...usually a good sign of a hidden treasure.
They have a white board outside with their specials...$5.99 for a grilled shrimp sandwich, comes with one side (i chose the homemade macaroni salad...scrumptious!), a drink, and a pickle (just so you're not surprised :)
The sandwich was soo good. They had enough seafood items that I figured it would be safe to order one. A bit of advice: if you go to a restaurant that only has one item that is seafood, it probably means they don't serve it a lot...meaning you never know how long the fish or whatever has been in the back. You don't want seafood that's been sitting around.
But, since I know I have a strong stomach (I did survive the Pat & Oscars' ecoli scare several years back), I knew I can take a chance for the sake of the review.
Sandwich was served on wheat bread, generous amount of shrimp, avocado...mm mm. I can't wait to try some of the other items they offer! It looks family run. They've been around forever. Very friendly and very helpful.
Check this place out!
Awesome. I came here in September for my internship. I didn't bring lunch, so I was looking around the area and found that this place was poppin' off!
So it seems like they don't have the $5 special anymore, but that's what I got. I think it was any sandwich, fries, and drink. They do not take card, but LUCKILY, the guy pointed out a Valero across the street, which had a BofA ATM.. sweet! (and he was nice enough to trust that I didn't just order my lunch and run away... so everything was ready for me by the time I got back) Anyway, the hot pastrami sandwich was pretty bomb.. It's made with regular sliced bread, so it's kind of homemade-ish, but yum.
And word to what everyone else said. It was a sweltering day when I went, and there was no AC! It was hot. But the food was goood. and cheap.
But...I was only there for breakfast.
One of the worst breakfasts I've ever paid for. We'll, I was treated to the breakfast but, that's not the point.
My ranchero sauce was La Victoria salsa (not exaggerating), my tortilla tasted funny, no cheese, my eggs were runny and so were my beans. I figured; with Mexican cooks, I couldn't go wrong with the huevos rancheros...but wrong I was.
My family did the eggs, bacon and toast thing. Nothing really wrong with theirs.
It was also drafty and the coffee was horrible.
I plan to go back for lunch and hopefully change my review.
Found this place out from a fellow co worker. It's great! You ask why?
It's cheap.
It's fast.
And it's good.
They have lunch combos, which include a sandwich, a side (potato, macaroni, etc.), and a drink. I've stuck to ordering either their pastrami, club, monte cristo, ham, bacon, & turkey sandwich, or their corn beef sandwich. All verry d-lish. Might I also add that their portions are pretty big.
It gets pretty busy lunch time so most people order to go. It's one of the places I like going to around my work area (:
I came here awhile back, and got your typical veggie burger. We took it to go, so I wasn't able to eat it until another 20 minutes later, which was probably our first mistake. The fries and pattie weren't as good as I knew they should of been, so I was a little disappointed.
Other than that, the staff was really nice, and the seating is limited but has a good feel to the place.
They have a good selection of sandwiches which I'm sure are great, and the prices are really good. I however don't feel that the drive is worth it, as its not really that close to me, and there's plenty of equally good sandwiches places in North Park/Hillcrest.
They always have good specials and they are on the signs outside which is what drew me in. However, you get what you pay for I guess but I was not pleased with my food. I've tried several things from here: fish & chips, Philly cheese steak, cheeseburger & fries. The burger was dry, fish was disgusting, philly was ok but I've had better. I mean I want to like them, nice people and all but all food has been under par for me. They don't take credit/debit so you better bring cash! Also it's on the corner and hardly any parking street wise or parking lot which has about 3 stalls. I might give it another shot maybe a cold sandwich since they are more of a deli. Hopefully I can have a better experience and change my review :)
WOW!!! never disappointing!!! Had the breakfast for the first time today (only served until 1030) but it was the best breakfast for the best price in town. where can you get french toast, eggs, and bacon for $3.99??? exactly! here! many breakfast choices. the sandwiches are unbeatable. pastrami, atc, bbq beef/pork rib, rueben, nj devil, you name it. have yet to try the dogs. they look so good too! simply... check it out. youll be a loyal customer like myself and a few others i know that have experienced the greatness! bring cash though! good eatin!!!
its owned by a few Mexican brothers who worked in various delis in NYC. the good thing is the menu is very diverse. The breakfasts are awesome the sandwiches delish. i usually get a turkey and cheese pita. they have lunch combos combined with a soups. i've had a tortilla soup here before that was delicious. one of the better deli's around town.
4 stars -
Price: outstanding $7.50 for the whole meal (sammy, fries and a drink)
Dining Area: comfortable and cozy - outside seating too
Food: Delicious - i had the Monte Cristo - but they run the gammut: hot pastrami, philly style cheese steaks/french dips, burgers and patty melts, and even a tasty looking salmon sammy... oh yeah, they do salads, bbq dishes, and breakfast too.
why not 5?
Location: hella far. and no parking.
Dining Area: no AC
Food: no beer.
When I told a friend of mine that I found a "New York style" deli in Diego, he asked me if they had sausages hanging all over the place. Given that I've never been to a deli in New York, I couldn't say one way or another if that is a trademark of one. Regardless of authenticity, I can vouch for the quality and selection of delicious sandwiches that Sunrise Deli has to offer.
Their menu breaks down their sandwiches into different categories including traditional deli sandwiches, grilled sandwiches, dips & specialties, hamburgers, hot dogs, wraps, and "triple deckers."
What alluded to any form of east coast authenticity was their grilled sandwiches. With names like the Brooklyn Reuben Deluxe (corned beef, swiss, sauerkraut, Russian dressing on grilled rye), Moscow Black Russian (hot pastrami, swiss, saurkraut, Russian dressing on grilled sourdough, and Montreal's Monte Cristo (breast of turkey, ham, swiss, dipped in egg batter and fried golden brown), you have to believe that these folks know their stuff.
Being the California-lovin-gluttonous-fool that I am, I opted for one of their specials. Though it was not listed on their menu, I caught a glimpse a poster hanging adjacent to their menu - among a host of others - that spoke of a BBQ beef rib combo. For under $9, I was treated to several juicy and tender slices meat right from a beef rib, slathered with BBQ sauce and put on hoagie bread. Served with a pickle spear and coleslaw - they also have other traditional sides - I was definitely a happy camper. Absolutely delicious I tell you, and their homemade coleslaw was not out-played by the main course, as it came with the right amount of mayo, with the perfect carrot/cabbage ratio.
I made a point to tell the guys working in the back that I will definitely be back. Hanging sausages or not, I would walk to New York to get my hands on another one of their sandwiches.
Every time I go to my friends house I'm tempted to stop here and eat. The eggs Benedict for breakfast comes with hashbrowns and is only 5 bucks. Everything here is good from the monte cristo to the lentil soup to the spaghetti and meat balls. Great cheap eats with something for everyone. Such a value you won't be disappointed.

This place has is such a hole in a wall but is one of the best hamburger places I have ever eaten. If you want a burger that is reasonable in price, get the STARVIN MARVIN'!! IT IS AMAZING!!! If you are watching your weight, maybe you shouldn't, just keep reading. This burger is soooooo yummy, I crave it and I'm not too much of a burger person unless it's In & Out or here. Anyway, Starvin Marvin consists of aged 1/4 or 1/2 pound beef, with sauteed mushrooms, cheese, bacon and avocado on a thick buttered toast! They also have the lettuce, onions, tomatoes, and pickles on the side. But if you eat it and assemble it, it is Just Divine and need I say huge?! Man, just writing about it, it's making my mouth water. Their fries, although are steak fries, so if you don't ask them to make it crunchy, it would just be soft and bleh. If you buy any meal, they include soda! Which I think is pretty cool. Reasonable price, nice people and when you ask for ranch, they don't charge you. I have tried their other stuff, hot dogs w/ extra stuff in it, (yum) and other things I can't remember but I have not been disappointed. But when I go there, I have to order the Starvin Marvin!
I rated this place 4 stars bec of their fries and its so far from my house. But it was close to my old work. Too bad I don't get to eat there enough. Maybe its a good thing bec I would probably blow up and get super fat.
Talk about a bang for your buck! This place is amazing. By far the best sandwiches in san diego! I work the grave shift and would come here for my 8 am dinner. They have great sandwiches that dont skimp on anything, the meat is piled high and the veggies are just right. The tortilla soup is out of this world, with tons of chicken and huge chunks of avocado and the broth is out of this world. Eat here if you want, but I usually get take out which is just as good. The people are also very nice and the service is quick!
Good for breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you want to stay impressed with this place stick to the burgers. As mentioned before a definite hole in the wall... or hole on a corner, how ever you look at it. Either way tasty and affordable food.
New York food is a beautiful thing. From it's cheap and easy nature to its complete and utter disregard for all things nutritious, NYC cuisine (pizza, burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches), like the city itself, is quintessentially American. Sunrise represents that style on the west coast, here in San Diego, and I couldn't be happier. I don't think they have pizza here, but the sandwiches (hot or cold, with fries or potato salad or stuff like that) and breakfast are delicious. Try the Monte Cristo.

Greatest deli in San Diego area for over 10 years. Small low down place, but the BEST food and BEST price. Great find.
Great price for great food! Having lived on Mt. Helix for many years, I'm wondering how many times I passed this place and never stopped. Duh. Highly recommended by my kids, we had brunch at Sunrise. The menu made it hard to decide what I wanted, but I had the chorizo scramble with hash browns. Yum. I'll be back soon!
I live in the area, and I'm so grateful The Sunrise Deli is not another Mexican Food place. I have nothing against Mexican restaurants I happen to own one, but in Casa De Oro there are at least two on every block.
I started coming to Sunrise Deli when it first opened, it's a go to place for our family, the service is friendly, the food is good, and your drink is included in the price of your meal. The patty melt is yummy, it's my husbands favorite, I like the pastrami, and the B.L.T's. When you want a decedent sandwich eat a Monte Christo, make sure the paramedics are in close proximity though, a batter fried sandwich should come with a warning label.
I have tried breakfast at Sunrise Deli it's been awhile but I remember the pancakes are memorable. Thanks Sunrise for being in business.
Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner.
Everything on the menu is big, fat, and delicious.
How do they keep the prices so low?
~I'd like to think that the nice mexican family that owns the place grow their own vegetables and have a ranch in TJ with cows, chickens, turkeys, and pigs to keep the costs down and profits up.
Portion sizes are huge and prices are low, I dont get it.
4stars for cash only and being so far away.

This place was a Chinese food joint, then two Mexican food places but now greasy sandwich goodness. My friend gets the salmon sandwich with clam chowder (available only on Fridays) and her sandwich is definitely healthier than my grilled in loads of butter Black Russian which is TO DIE for!
Good service, I call ahead during lunch time. Its usually $7 or so for a sandwich, soda, and side. Or for an extra dollar you upgrade your meal and get a milkshake DELICIOUS!
I love this place. My boyfriend lives in Casa de Oro so this is a frequent lunch stop. Everything we've ordered there is tasty, well priced and just great! I love the patty melt and philly cheese steak sandwich. The torpedo here are good too. This is a great sandwich and more joint. The owner is super nice, always a smile when you order!
The place was too hot- needs air conditioning, or if there is air conditioning present, it needs BETTER air conditioning. There was some outdoor seating which could make it a little more bearable depending on the outside weather. When I went it was very hot out. The wait time for the food was moderate- could be a little quicker.
I ordered the Turkey/Avocado/Swiss on grilled sourdough and fries. The sandwich was a little greasy but very good otherwise. The fries were hot and quite tasty.
Except for the temperature of the place inside, this was definitely a worthy find.
Boooo they dont have the $5 special anymore!!

So after completing SD's Mud-run, my roommate and I were in search of some food to compliment the mud in our mouths. We stumbled across Sunrise Deli, just as they were closing, but kind enough to make some sandwiches for us. I ordered the New Jersey Devil, which was delicious. It was HOT pastrami, Russian dressing and a few other ingredients that I don't remember. And my roommate ordered the "Miami" which looked good too. As the sandwiches were being prepared, looking at the rest of the menu, their breakfast options looked really good and for a good price!! If I only lived closer to Sunrise Deli, I would become a familiar face in there.
Found this place in high school and has become my favorite deli by far. I love the mushroom cheeseburger and I got my boyfriend addicted to the new jersey devil. I'm not too keen on the fries though, but it's still amazing. It's cheap, fast, and delicious.
I love the Sunrise Deli. I work in Spring Valley and this is by far the BEST place to grab lunch!
I have ordered something different almost everytime and have never been dissapointed. The portions are huge (I always have left overs to take home). The prices are very inexpensive, my favorite sandwhich is under $6.
All the sandwhiches come with a side (french fries, salad, potato salad, coleslaw etc) and a large drink. They even have delicious milkshakes now.
The place is always packed at lunch and the guys working are always extremely friendly, patient, and always smiling!
Great hot sandwiches! Super traditional, I can't wait to try breakfast here. Definitely worth the drive.
My husband told me how great this place was and I finally got a chance to try it. The place used to be a taco stand but the hard-working Mexican family who bought it turned it into a deli. Who would have thought that they'd create a little bit of Big Apple paradise in a hidden spot in east county San Diego? Spring Valley, to be exact. The prices are reasonable, if not downright cheap. The food is excellent. Don't expect a big place, there are only about 6-8 tables inside, nothing fancy.
But the burgers, the burgers are the best!!! Big, overflowing an already generous bun, thick, juicy, cooked the way you want it. This is not your average burger, it's totally unexpected. It's not the frozen pre-formed tasteless low-grade beef patty most places serve, this is really delicious, choice, maybe even prime grade. I could only eat half of my avocado bacon burger, hubby had to finish it, after he'd already downed his deli turkey and fries which also looked pretty good. He has breakfast there weekly which he raves about, he's picky so I believe him, doubly so after experiencing that burger.
They do a big takeout business. While we were there, about half a dozen people came in for pickups.
It's worth a trip off the beaten path to visit the Sunrise Deli. My husband travels about 42 miles round-trip once a week for the chow. Tell them Warren sent you.
this place is great. they have a very good selection of deli style sandwiches to fit any ones cravings. i usually get the Russian which is pastrami that is put on the skillet with Russian dressing and it taste great every time. the staff is friendly and the prices are also friendly. my only problem is the parking...kinda hard to get parking if they are busy
