weather was just perfect. not too hot, not too cold.
we played "cypress" side of sunol valley golf club.
mainly 4par course with a few tricky holes.

- $57 for cart + 1play
- enough H20 refill spots & potty breaks

the view is gorgeous! its relaxing, its quiet, it was
plain fun to golf here. the only downfall for me....
the carts were engine base. its a tad loud, you know?

My friend Ryan often plays Sunol and sold the shit out of it to me. He's been raving about Sunol and their dirt cheap rates for months.  I figured it would be worth a trip down from San Jose to play there for like $40.

We had a Sunday tee time on the Palm Course (they also have the Cypress Course).  Got to the 1st tee and knew we were in trouble.  It's never good when like 15 dudes are hanging out waiting to get out.  We were delayed on our tee time, and I HATE when there are a group of noisy jackasses hanging out watching you tee off.  I'm a decent player, but the pressure of looky-loo's always makes me hook it left.  Anyway, 3 hours and 20 minutes had passed and we were at the turn.  We had a serious discussion on whether to call it quits.  Luckily, we finished in about 2 more hours making it ONLY a 5:30 round.

The course was also not in very good shape.  Lots of little bare patches all over the fairways.  Boring back and forth layout, and the pace... Ugh, the pace.  Now, I've only played it the one time - but that was enough.  One of the worst courses around.

Banquet Facility Review.

My husband and I had our wedding reception at Sunol and cannot say enough good things about the staff, food and price. Randy and Susan were absolutely amazing and went above and beyond to make sure our event went off without a hitch. These women are incredible!

I also attended a wedding at Sunol last year. The ceremony was outside overlooking the beautiful green hills and palm trees. It was a lovely event. I highly recommend Sunol for not only weddings but any event (bday, retirement party, etc...).

This course is a stand by for us when we can't get a time closer to home.  There is always time available at Sunol, which I don't understand because the play is slow here.   We normally play the Cypress 18, and I do like the layout.   This is typical muni style, uneven grass on fairways, lots of weeds, and slow greens.    What sucks is in the summer months (or even last weekend) it gets SUPER HOT and tree hugging is mandatory.   I even played my ball toward the trees just so I can sit and wait in the shade.  Again, it's pretty slow, I brought a book with me and finished half of it.

There are two 18 hole courses at this golf club (Palm and Cypress courses).  I recently played the Palm course after visiting a friend in the area.  I had not played here in probably ten years.  The course was in fair condition.  Many of the fairways seem to be filled with weeds more than grass.  The greens were bumpy and slow.  The price was right, as I played twilight for about $20 walking.  I was able to get in 12 holes on a Saturday afternoon, so I was happy.

The clubhouse is pretty old and dated and exactly the same as ten years earlier.  I would probably only play this course if I am in the area visiting friends and with a few extra hours.  Otherwise, there are many course I would prefer playing.

This review is for the Wedding Facilities only. I have never golfed there, in fact, I don't golf at all. But anyways, the wedding facilities is definitely an A+. The entire process, from beginning to end, was a very pleasant experience. We had our wedding in February 2009 on a beautiful sunny day with just a few clouds.

The facilities manager, Susan, was very easy to work with. She was very accommodating and always had a smile on her face. We went with one of the wedding packages that includes the appetizers, meals, drinks, decorations, and wedding coordinator, a real good deal (highly recommend going with a package instead of piecemeal). You may think that weddings at golf clubs are too expensive, but to be honest, it wasn't cheap, but definitely affordable. We looked at about 7 other comparable sites and this one had the best location (right off of 680) and best value.

As the man, I believe that the most important aspect of a wedding is the meal. Every guest remembers the food. If you asked my wife, she would probably say that the decorations and settings are most important. All of it was excellent. I didn't get to taste the appetizers but my guests said it was good. The dinner was excellent, we went with the trio with steak, chicken, and salmon. I could go on and on about the details, but I don't want to be too lengthy in this review, but believe me, everything turned out great.

One last thing I did want to mention was the wedding coordinator that we had, Christine or Christina (I am bad with names), was extraordinary. She went out of her way to make our wedding perfect. Her and her assistant deserve kudos for all of the hard work they put into that day.

Overall, I highly recommend giving SVGC a try when visiting wedding facilities. You will not be disappointed. Every time we went to visit the facilities, there was wedding preparation going on, which is a good sign, which means that a lot of people are having their weddings there.

Came here for a wedding reception and not too shabby. Not Casa Real status but it was a fun wedding. The room was nicely decorated and the staff was efficient. The food was pretty good and they served a Chicken stuffed with spinach or steak. The steak was nicely done however the roasted potatoes weren't that great since they were overcooked.

I went with the guys from my family, my grandfather, and two of my friends for a round of golf. I'm not a terrible golfer, but I'm definitely not the greatest.

The first thing you notice about the course is it's IMMENSE size. There are 2 18-hole courses: The Palm Course and the Cypress Course. We decided to go on the Palm Course.

The price per person for the cart as well as a full-round was $45, not bad for the amazing course. The view is spectacular and the grounds are well kept. I don't know what it was about today, but the green seemed to be almost like a pool table top - it just rolled like crazy, there was no catch to the ball.

For all of you who like a great walk, there's no need for a cart. If you feel like you don't want to go on a great walk, I would suggest one of their slow golf carts.

Other than that I would definitely go back and try the course again as well as the other, just with a new set of golf clubs and TONS of golf balls (you might lose a few depending on your experience).

It was my friend's birthday last month, he turned 65 btw, he was super stoked to be able to collect social security. Nah, he turned 24. Anyways, he wanted to hit up a golf course for his birthday. In the Bay Area, there is definitely no shortage of golf courses. However, on my trips to Stoneridge over the years, I've always noticed this golf course and wondered what it was like to play.

I'm still new to golf (started in the spring) and this was my first experience playing 18 holes. Compared to my first time playing golf, which was an executive course and took 3.5 hours to play hahahhaha, I've improved vastly since then. It took me a little over 4 hours to play through the 18 holes and we had a cart.

I played on the Cypress course which was okay. The grass had a lot of patches and brown areas and a lot of people don't like to patch up their divots. Being the newbie that I am, I took great effort to make sure I didn't ruin things for other golfers.

What I didn't like was how this dude came onto the fairway that we thought was playing behind us, but nah he was actually hitting from our fairway into the adjacent hole. What the fuck? It was perplexing and a little discourteous.

Rates were reasonable. It was only 45 or so dollars which included the cart. I'd come here to play again because I suck so much at golf and wouldn't want to embarrass myself at a nicer course.

Advice: (for myself at least...) Bring more beer next time.

The course has a couple of holes that are ridiculous. with little or no fairway to approach from or with slopes that give you no chance of landing a playable ball. Everyone in our group, from novice to experienced golfers, was frustrated and annoyed by at least 3 holes on the course.

The price was right, about $57 with cart when booked online for Sunday play. The scenery is nice and, surprisingly, the noise from Hwy 680 isn't that noticeable on most holes.

This review is for the banquet facilities - I don't play golf and have nothing to say to that.  I'm giving it one star because "no stars" isn't an option.

Last night my company had our annual party (moved into January because year-end is crazy-busy for our business).  This year, due to scheduling conflicts at our normal venue, the party was held in Sunol.  We won't be going back.

Despite being assured that wait staff would be carrying the hors d'oeuvres around, they were instead all laid out on a table for self service.  The egg rolls were close to burned and were cold.  The fried wontons were good - but were not labeled as being stuffed with crab.

The issue?  I'm allergic to shellfish.  Thankfully only in a "my entire body itches like crazy and I break out in a rash" way not a "my throat closes up and I ride in an ambulance to the hospital" way.  And yes, I should know enough to ask to be sure, but then normally one can usually find out something is shellfish by looking - when I broke apart the first wonton I thought it was feta cheese (so did my husband) so I ate two, about 20 minutes later I went over to get more, bit into one and noticed pink bits.  That's when I asked one of the waitstaff what was in them and was informed it was crab.

They showed me to a secondary bathroom that wasn't being used by anyone else wherein I proved that I'd make a piss-poor bulemic.  Of course, I'd recently used the last of the benedryl I normally carry in my purse and hadn't remembered to refill it.  So I went back to the party to see if anyone had benadryl with them.  When noone did, I asked the staff at the venue if they had any, but they informed me there was only painkillers in their medicine cabinet and directed me to the gas station on the other side of the freeway.

So, my husband and I got back in the car, drove to the gas station and paid extortionary prices for benedryl before going back to the venue.  Not once, the entire rest of the evening, did any of the staff ask me how I was doing - nor even confirm I'd been able to get hold of some Benedryl.

When dinner was served, the lettuce in the salad was turning brown, the main course was lukewarm, the mashed garlic potatoes had unmashed chunks in them, and my husband's dinner (he had the very-overcooked steak with some sort of "powdered gravy" crap on it) gave him tummy troubles the rest of the night.

By the end of dinner and then the annual recognitions and awards speech, I was more than ready to go home.  If the company by some remote chance ever holds a function there again, I'll be staying home.

I don't play here as much as I used to, but boy did I play here back in the day.  Back when I was a newbie golfer, say 10 years ago, I played this course a lot b/c 1)it has 2 courses;  2)was and still is Fremont's closest 18 hole course;  3)has some pretty good deals in the afternoons.  So suffice to say, I did a lot of playing/learning here.

The courses winds around the east bay Sunol hills nicely, and the holes are scenic and laid out nicely.  Between the wind and the hills, a round can pose many challenges.   Just played last week (1st time this year), and visiting this place is like visiting an old friend.  I always have memories of each hole, the trouble I've gotten into, the short cuts I've taken, and the memorable plays I've executed (with or without luck).  To have realized that I knew so much "local" knowledge for this place made me aware of how much of a "local" I really was.  And just like an old friend, it is always a pleasure to visit.

Cool Holes:  Cypress Course #7,8,9,10,18.
                       Palm Course #3, 4, 7 11, 15

I haven't played sunol in about 8 years, so I needed a trip down memory lane, especially on the weekend when you couldn't pass up the oppurtunity to play golf.

I played Cypress, which is the easier of the two courses.  One thing I noticed was that the fairways were really bare and hard to hit out of.  I'd rather purposely hit it in the rough to give myself some grass to hit on.   What I like about the course is that they give you oppurtunities to make decisions.  Should you go for the par 5's that are fairly within reach?  Unfortunately I did and paid for it on 2 of them.  The decision making oppurtunities, however, did not make up for the poor course condition.  Go to Santa Teresa or Callipe Preserve if you want to see a real good course.

Eventhough I don't live in Sunol, I consider this a "home" course considering how often I play here.  On average, I play this course 4 to 5 times a year.  Green/cart fees are reasonable, course conditions are above average, and the staff is friendly.  The facilities are huge, with two full-size 18 hole courses on site.  The Palm course is the longer of the two, the other being Cypress.  The layout for both courses is excellent, putting your course management skills to the test.  Both sand bunkers and water hazzards are present but fairly limited.  Overall, I would recommend this course for beginners and intermediate level players.  My only complaint is that golf club often does a poor job of scheduling tee times too close to one another.  Quite frequently, I'll show up on time to find out that there are 3 to 4 groups waiting to tee off.  On a related note, the course marshalls need to do a better job of speeding up slow play too.  Overall, still a great course and I'll continue to come here.

I gave it 5 stars with the price in mind. If you are a serious golfer and like really groomed courses, you may want to look somewhere else.

They have 2 courses, the Palm which is the longer course and the Cypress which is a bit shorter.  It can get a little windy here as it is located on the eastern side of the Fremont grade on 680. In the summer, it can also get pretty hot.   Best to play in the morning if you can.

There are some elevation changes on the Palm course which will require a good club selection.  Greens are in OK shape and are moderate in speed. (A bit on the slow side)

The main reason I gave it 5 stars is because of the price. You can play it with a cart for $30 or so.  I just saw a special from them which was a $20 green fee with a cart, Mon - Thur after 11am.  Where else can you play for that price in the south bay area?

Great to practice your game.  You can take your driver out on most par 4's and 5's.  Some holes have heavy brush and a few holes with water.  Keep'em in the fairway...

Update:
Beware, rounds can be very slow on the weekends.

Update:
Got a chance to play the Palm course.  It was better than I'd thought.  Very little O.B. which allowed me to play the same ball the whole round!!!  Beautiful course with palm trees lining each fairway.  Be aware:  THIS COURSE IS VERY WINDY.  I highly recommend playing this course.  $36 w/ cart is a great deal.

(old)
There are two entwined courses here making it hard to get bored of playing the same holes.  I've actually only played the Cypress course a few times and have yet to play "The Palms" course.  The fairways are forgiving and the twilight rates are awesome.  I recommend you stop by here whenever you are cruzzing up or down 680 between Pleasanton and Fremont.

Look, I'm going to get right to the point, otherwise no one will ever trust my opinion again.

The biggest problem with this course are the tee times.  Apparently, they are too close together.  I can honestly state that out of the hundreds of courses I've played over a lifetime, Sunol has back-ups at the First Tee that eclipse anything I've seen.  I have at one time seen them backed up FOUR tee times.  That's a full 32 minute wait to tee off.  What I can't understand is why other courses use the same separation, and don't have this problem.  I'm sure one factor is the extremely affordable tee times which have a tendency to attract golfers unfamiliar with proper speed of play and etiquette.

What's really tragic is that this course deserves a better rating.  While both courses are incredibly easy with the highest slope rating being 121 from the tips on the Palm course, it's nonetheless two relatively fun courses.  There are plenty of elevation changes, water on a few holes and the course is in decent shape.  It has a very "muni" feel to it at points where multiple tee boxes converge.  It is rare if ever that you will not see numerous other foursomes hacking away.  There are some interesting views from fairways at the top of the course, but the adjacent freeway doesn't provide for any serenity.

It is worth mentioning the hacking away part.  The low slope rating makes this a perfect course for beginners, and they are definitely out there.  (Conversely, low handicappers will enjoy the ability to hit almost every par-5 in two.)  While I love to see new people taking up the sport, it's important to remember that you're not the only out there.  Keep up the pace and, if you are truly horrible, pick up your ball and head to the next tee.  Just practice harder for the next time you're out here.

I have played much better groomed courses than this one. Also, the location is lame. RIGHT next to 680? What happened to quiet during the game?
Also, when I went the staff was super rude to me. Maybe they weren't taking me serious as a 20 year old golfer? I still like the game...
I do have to say, hole 10 on the Cypress course is beautiful.

I went golfing here for the first time.  Although I have no experience with golfing I still enjoyed myself.  We rented out a golf cart and there was even a person monitering the golf course.  The only thing that was a bit annoying was that there was a couple (guys) that put pressure on us so we just let them go ahead of us.  It's not the cleanest golf course (as in no divets) but that didn't matter to me because it takes more of the pressure off of me to be perfect.  I think this place closes when the sun sets, which I thought was pretty cool.

This is a Fun course. Cypress is a little easier, where Palm is longer and a little tougher for beginners. Its a very clean course and the facilities are very nice. Very recommended. You can easily book your tee times online and pick your own times. You can totally by pass the people on the phone and just do it yourself. The prices compared to most are reasonable.
