So everyone has driven by Sunnyvale Muni at one point or another, since it is directly across the 101 from Moffett Field. Unlike Palo Alto and Metro in Oakland, the air field is hardly used, so you won't have any low fly-bys or 'the pattern is full' moments. Finally set up an early Sunday tee time at around 745, and I was surprised to see how crowded it had already become -- it is pretty much built within a bunch of business park complexes, so at that time of day on a weekend there are 'big things poppin', as those crazy kids sometimes say. No range or warmup area, but the putting green was well maintained although definitely a little packed... pro shop feller seemed nice enough, though the $47 rate seemed a little steep for a muni -- Harding is only a couple dollars more for SF residents, so I was a little surprised This wouldn't stop me from playing here again, but the layout and conditioning are of that of a 30-ish dollar track.
As other people have said, the club-side half of the course is a little tree-lined (though by no means narrow or difficult), and the 101/237 section is pretty much wide open... scattered trees and bunkers with some ponds and cricks towards the end of the front 9, but you'd really have to try hard to go OB or lose your ball. Length is also not a problem for most people... from the tips its only 6200, so it is a great place for shorter hitters and beginners. We were a bit worried about the pace, but actually played under 4 hours, so no worries there. It seems like most of the better players get out early in the morning, since most of the hackers start clogging the pipes in the afternoon and twilight -- so be warned.
Except for some scattered sogginess along the edges of the water holes, the fairway was muni-acceptable and the rough was actually deep and challenging at some points. The greens also were very receptive and consistent -- some bumps here and there but I'm guessing it was mostly due to people not repairing their ballmarks. I didn't spend any time on the beach, but from afar the bunkers looked a little sketchy -- concrete-esque. There weren't really any 'signature' holes, and only two straightforward par-5s... driver really seemed optional throughout the entire round. If I had to choose I'd say that 7 (par 3 over water) and 8 (short par 4 with water on both sides) required the most thought in ball placement and club selection. Everywhere else you could pretty much just bomb-wedge-putt. Because golf is an easy, silly game.

I'll go ahead and call this one of my favorite of the "textbook muni" courses around. I didn't really know what to expect, I had only seen views while passing by on the freeway. But it plays good for golfers of all skill levels.
They have a little water to toughen things up. But overall, the course is flat. It is broken up into three "parts" as you cut under Highway 237 and back. I really, really liked the 14-17 holes. A little area that had a lot more trees and shade, and a little gully seperating the holes.
Strange but cool, they have the lights for Moffet Field's landing strip going right down two fairways on the holes close to 101. It took me a second to figure out what those big metal posts were as we were teeing off. But they are the blue lights that guide the jets in at night. In the fairway! A little later we saw a huge cargo prop plane land.
I assume pairing a round of golf here during Fleet Week would be an awesome day...
Same ballpark as Santa Clara or Shoreline, and better than Palo Alto or SJ Muni.
sunnyvale is a pretty interesting layout. the first hole is a short par 4 dogleg with a pond guarding the corner. the last few holes are really narrow and challenging. we went on a saturday and the course wasn't very crowded. it's at a very convenient location to drive to (on the corner of 101 and 237), but the downside is that you hear the sound traffic a lot on the course. overall a pretty good bargain. i'd give it 3.5 stars for the course and 5 stars for the value & convenience.
nice course, long wait, no driving range, awesome snack shack.
Nothing really has changed since the last time I've played here about 8 years ago, so here goes.
The first couple holes are something you'd expect from Sunken gardens...tree-lined, narrow fairways and hardly any wind. Once you make your way under the freeway and to the third hole, the whole course changes into something resembling palo alto muni or shoreline, pretty much link style until you reach the 15th hole or so. After that, you revert back to the type of course you started out with. Very strange, but it felt nice playing two courses in one haha.
The condition of the fairways and greens weren't bad, but can you say snail's pace of play? I'm no pro but I think every round should never hit the 5hr mark. However, I can't complain because I shot my lowest round yet over here =). I'll give you on more star just for that! Thank YOU soft greens and forgiving fairways!

Restaurant only.
I was supposed to be working on applications instead, but my buddy's dad was in town and took us to lunch. Can't pass up the chance to see him when he's around. Over the years, he and my friend have worked down the street, so they often come here to eat.
It seems surprising to me that the general public can get anywhere near a golf course. I associate them with exclusive country clubs that I would never be a part of.
Anyway, decent food for a good price. Not fancy, but comfortable. I imagine in the spring and summer it's magnificent and look forward to a future outdoor dining experience. I've been here before and was satisfied but can't recall the meal. I'd recommend trying the specials if they appeal to you. I had the special cajun linguine today. Pretty darned good. Spicy enough to satisfy my continual quest for heat, yet not unbearable for the fainter of heart. Some good veggies in there, too, without being overwhelming. They weren't even overcooked, which often happens.
Last time we went, the place was nearly empty. We weren't in a hurry and had the chance to hear some outrageous stories being recounted (facilitated, no doubt, by the full bar). A person couldn't have made that stuff up if they'd tried.
Today, it was full. One waitress took our orders in between working behind the bar. Before we got served, another one came by to take the order. She hadn't realized we'd already been helped. I thought it was cool that they weren't on a "that's not my table" kick and were trying to take care of everyone, despite having their hands full. Our waitress was obnoxiously funny as hell, plus accommodating and attentive. Nice lady. I appreciate the entertainment. Why shouldn't we all have fun at work?
There's an interesting mix of customers, and I get the feeling some people frequent this place as their local bar.
Was excited to see they have a library of used books on the way out for people to trade. I hope to make use of it next time I come. I'm always looking for a trashy murder mystery, particularly since my latest reads have tended towards the more serious (e.g., emotionally wrenching stuff or reference material).
I really couldn't have asked for more, other than nicer weather.
I have never played this course. I prefer 9 holes my skill level is too hit or miss on the back 9 at this point in my golf career. With that said, it is a great place for lunch. I work nearby and on a nice day you can sit outside and enjoy and good lunch and a refreshing beverage. The wait staff are friendly usually everyone there for lunch is friendly.
Note: No driving range at this course. I am bummed about it as it would be nice to hit balls at lunch.
I've recently played at Skywest, Poplar Creek, and Palo Alto Muni but Sunnyvale Muni is now my favorite course. As a beginner, it was nice to have fairly wide fairways but it can also be challenging for low-mid handicappers since they do mix in a bunch of doglegs and water hazards of some of the holes. It's not straight and long boring golf like Palo Alto Muni and not as windy and short as Poplar Creek. It's a little easier than Skywest. Greens and fairways were in decent condition but the sand was very hard and firm - not fun hitting out of the bunker.
One of the charms of the course is that it is next to Moffett Field so you may actually see some military planes (we saw two) as they are landing. There are actually big orange floodlights on some of the fairways which don't really get in your way but brighten up the course.
The course is split by the 237 highway so you actually have to take a small tunnel under the highway to get to the next set of holes.
There is no driving range but they do have a small putting green near the first tee. There is also a restaurant but we didn't eat there.
I plan to play there again - it cost about $40 for twilight fee on Sunday, including cart for one person.
I have played this course more times than I can remember. I go back because it is close to home and has decent rates especially early twilight rates. They are undergoing maintenance on a lot tee boxes right now and have the twilight rate for the whole day.
Overall it is a decent course. Very forgiving and with slow easy greens. Its a nice course for beginners or folks who want to get a boost of confidence. My few gripes are that there is no driving range to warm up and the noise from the freeways on about 4-5 holes.
This course is super wide and forgiving, as demonstrated by my 26 over par, which was the first time picking up a golf club in over a couple of months.
I didn't cart it, but it's 9.50 if you want to.
The greens needed some help. The rough was mostly bent and I got decent lies. The fairways needed some maintenance too.
But, overall, the course is pretty good.

This is a very basic course and similar in features to the San Jose muni: cheap, wide fairways, and some bunkers and water hazards.
Overall, it's not long and feels a bit short; I was able to reach most of the par 4's with my 20 degree hybrid and 8 iron (and I suck!). Some of the sand traps could've used some work, as well as the greens. I played like crap and I stil give this place 4 stars (thank you big open fairways). Great place if you're starting out or are a student that's looking to save some money.
Bonus: the course leads you to the snack shop 3 different times which means more beer and polish dogs :-)

Sunnyvale's muni course right off of Hwy 101. Not bad prices, but the course could use some better maintenance and improvements. The cart paths, for the most, are actually cart dirt roads. In the winter, it gets muddy and makes for quite a mess. Fairways needed some new grass and reseed, bunkers were devoid of sand and greens were bumpy.
Also, the carts do not have tops, so in the summer, your really get beat up with the wind and sun.
The layout is basic with no real signature holes. Has a putting green, but no driving range.

One of my favorite courses whenever I need to feel better about my game. This is a very easy track, although it could prove tough for very high-handicappers due to the trees on those holes adjacent to the clubhouse.
The course plays very short and most of the holes are wide open, especially those along Highway 101. Oddly enough, you never seem to notice the freeway noise. There are a couple odd lot holes such as #5 which has a 120 degree turn in the fairway and #16 which has a green stuck in the furthest back corner of the course.
The course is in fair shape and given the incredible amount of play it sees, I wouldn't expect it to be any better. The prices are low enough that you shouldn't feel bad about the occasional unfixed divot or ball mark.
Slope from the tips is 121 versus 110 from the forward tees. The difference of 1,000 yards makes it possible for a newbie to play with a low-handicapper, and everyone can still enjoy the round.
Cool Factor: If you're really lucky, a military jet will land at Moffett Field while you're playing the holes along 101. Hold on to your hat and cover your ears! They're all of 50 feet off the deck as they set up to land on the runway(s) just on the other side of the freeway. It's a rarity these days, but it has happened to us once.

I went here in a foursome, at 10:49am on a Sunday. It was $115 for two players with a cart. The course itself was nice, but I'm dinging the place a star for booking us right in front of a "tournament" of crabby old bitches, and having the balls to come out and tell us to "pick up the pace" after a hole and a half of play.
F-U sunnyvale municipal, F-U

No Driving Range!
Other than that, its a pretty nice, easy course. Not a lot of water, and the greens are a little bumpy, but it's my home course and I love the people there.
Just an average flat muni course. I played here a lot when I Iived close by. Noise from nearby Moffett Field (I think some holes are in the flight path) and the 101 freeway detracts from what would otherwise be a decent experience.
Course was pretty good for a Muni, but the staff blows. The usual bunch of apethetic 19 year olds, just working part time for some beer/weed money. These dummies booked our foursome right in front of a "tournament" of old ladies...impatient old ladies. Then the dopey kid drives out and tells us to "pick up the pace" after a hole and a half of play. All this for $115 (two players with a cart). What a bargain. If you come here, make sure you are not in the middle of some geriatric tourney.
Okay this isn't Pebble Beach people its Sunnyvale Muni. Having said that let's move on, shall we? The place has a sports bar that should get some points right there. The lady that works in the Snack Shack near the third hole is one of the nicest people I have ever met and seriously I hate most people. As far as the golf goes let me reiterate: its freakin Sunnyvale Muni. Watch out for C-17's on the approach at Moffett Field I seriously think that you could shatter a cockpit if you really got under it.

the lookout restaurant at the sunnyvale muni golf course is a great place to relax after playing. you can sit out on the 2nd floor patio, have a beer and watch the putting on the green. great spot for lunch at reasonable prices.
are there any environmentalists out there? most of the trees at the course are dying. ( all species ). we think it's the reclaimed water the city is using on the course. anyone paying attention to this?? anyone in the city gov know about this?
This is one of my favorite muni courses in the bay area. The greens are a tad bumpy (you can defintely see it if you have a long putt) but overall the greens are decent enough to give yourself a chance to putt well for the round. The fairways are kept pretty well, but I wish they could take a gas blower and get rid of the dry tree leaves and branches. For the first 7 holes, you can shoot a really really low score, but the make or break hole is the hole 8 - its requires a straight shot on the narrow fairway. The approach shot will also need pin point accuracy because you have to carry the short water hazard in front of the greens. Go long, and its in the bunker. You do not want to be in the bunker because the green slopes towards the water and will force you to land it on the high side of the green otherwise you will be wet. the rest of the holes are pretty straight forward and not much trouble to deal with. Fun course and don't find the flying airplanes. Moffet left is right across the street. =)
I played here a couple weeks ago on a Thursday afternoon with some friends. We got there about 3pm, expecting to be able to tee off right away without having to wait since I was told the course has been known to be pretty empty, even on weekends. I couldn't imagine why it would be so busy on that Thursday afternoon, Don't people have to work? Then I realized that it was probably because it was June 21, which I believe is supposed to be the longest day of the year. Plus, in a city like Sunnyvale known for great weather, it was a perfect day for a round of golf. We ended up having to wait 2 hours and didn't tee off until about 5pm! Price was $25 for 18 holes (does not include cart rental). In my opinion, this is a pretty good deal for an 18-hole muni course located in a city with great weather. The course is pretty much flat, with virtually no hills or slopes, making it an easily walk-able course, also. There are many wide open fairways, some of which are even enclosed with lines of trees so if you hook or slice the ball when teeing off, you may get lucky and have the ball bounce back on the fairway. You'll find several water hazards, though they're by no means a real challenge. Also, the bunkers are not as deep as they normally should be, making it fairly easy to hit out of sand traps. This is a great course for beginner/intermediate level golfers. Only complaint was the 2 hour wait when we got there. However, being able to tee off at 5pm and still getting through 15 holes before it got dark about 8:45pm is pretty awesome. Overall, a fun course with a great price and great weather. Can't get much better than that.
