Great basic donut shop--pay by cash only!
The mini-sized donuts (generally quite a variety) are perfect for kids & the diet (everyone needs to taste a donut once in a while)!
Get there early for best selection.

I hit this little shop about four times a month, and every one who tries their donuts loves them. Some even like them more than Krispy Kreme. The owner runs the front counter and greets you right away. They have good coffee and the donuts are fresh.

**My personal favorites are the maple bars and the blueberry cake donuts

The only gripe I might have if they didn't provide an ATM machine is that they only accept cash. I understand the fees associated with accepting cc's are a bit high, but it's 2012....get with the times already!

Closest thing to a Dunkins you'll find in the Bay Area. Bostonians who need their fix should definitely give this place a try.

Sunny Donuts is sort of how I would imagine Dunkins would be if Dunkins was a mom and pop donut shop. A hole-in-the-wall that looks a little tired and in need of a paint job, and with hardly any donuts left and a locked restroom. Everything tasted just like Dunkins, in some ways a little better. The donuts tasted more like Dunkin Donuts 15 years ago - soft and fresh! They even had Boston Cream!!!! Soooo awesome!!

I wish Dunkins would hurry up and quit being weird and just bring their franchises back to California, but this isn't a bad alternative for the time being.

I RARELY eat Donuts. Maybe once every few years.

When I do, I expect fluffy, crispy fried flaky deliciousness. And even then I only have half.

    How hard can it be?

I stopped in for the first time and the chocolate w/ peanut sprinkles was stale and falling apart. The chocolate glaze was hardly passable.

:( So close to me yet so far away.

They don't have a lot variety and the donuts selection gets a little empty during the day. I typically go for the original glaze and they're OK. There is nothing special about this place besides serving donuts and coffee.

    Dear Sunny,

We have never met, but I know your chocolate cake donut very well.  Thanks to my co-worker for bringing me your donuts, they are full of chocolately, fluffy goodness.

I hope someday to meet you in person to thank you for starting my day off right.

At 6:30AM this morning I woke up hankering for some donuts. So despite my wife just shaking her head at me, I flew out the door at 7 to collect.

And there was a line at this place this early on a Sunday morning!

Brought back half a dozen tasty, stent inducing nuggets of doughnutty goodness. 3 glazed, a chocolate, a rainbow sprinkle, and a boston cream.  Fresh, light and tasty - this is now my regular doughnut zone.

Yummy donuts at a good price. I picked up one Eclair for 55c and it was fresh and tasty. I really liked that it was a small size instead of some huge thing I had to eat in two sittings like most donuts.

Nice people running the place too.

One cool evening, while on a stroll with the SO and the dog, we decided to see what this store's about since we always pass by it.

Inside, I was surprised to find such a wide selection of donuts, all kinds you can imagine. They have even more flavors than Krispy Kreme!

I wanted a sugar donut, and was in luck when the owner went to the back to grab from a fresh, hot batch for me! Since it was still warm and soft, this was the best sugar donut I've had.

Now I see why this store has been around for the longest time. Great selection, friendly service, reasonable prices. I'll be coming back for more.

I live close to SUNNYS and I've been there roughly 5 or 6 times and every single time (!) I go the owner is sooo darn rude! He's always annoyed if you 'choose' your donuts and waist his time... Not just to me, I've seen it done to others in line before and after me! .... And his donuts are often STALE!!! ...I keep going back cuz it's the closest around, but really I get so flustered when I leave that the special early am treat actually ruins my day! ... don't bother even asking for a 'pink box' for your treats as he seem to be so totally annoyed that you ask for one as i have when taking donuts to my children's school for special treat occasions! uggghhhh.... for get it!

Now i'm not a donut aficionado by any stretch, but I went there tonight and had a chocolate butternut donut..I think that was the name...i've been having a big sweet tooth of late so I couldn't pass it up

--it was pretty yummy..once again, I don't have much to compare it to but it satisfied by sugar craving..my g/f had some mint chip ice-cream and I had a few bites...it wasn't the best but I didn't expect Baskin Robbins type of ice-cream for obvious reasons

--I wish they had more donuts available..but I did go in the night-time so that's expected..I might go tomorrow so we'll see!

I love this place, the same owner (Sunny?) has owned the place since I was a kid. I used to work at the comic book store that was next door (long gone now)...but now, when I come back to town, he still remembers me! And I haven't lived in San Jose in like 6 years!

The donuts are good, I like small donut shop donuts....my one complaint is they don't make enough...if I get there around 10 am, most of them are gone already! But, I still love this place!

This shop replaced Dunkin Donuts many years ago.  I can't find creme filled donuts anywhere except Krispy Kreme.  Well, I just realized that Sunny Donuts still makes the same Dunkin Donut vanilla and chocolate creme donuts I loved growing up.  I had two of them today and they were made like little pillows of heaven!  You've gotta try'em!  I've never tasted a donut that was so fresh.   Krispy Kreme's creme filled donut is not even half as good.  Thank you for ecstasy!

"Sunnkin Donuts" is what I call it, because until 2000 or so, it used to be a Dunkin Donuts franchise.

Luckily, a lot of the Dunkin influence has survived!

I know a lot of people are really into Krispy Kreme, and occasionally I eat a KK donut. I understand and agree that a fresh "Hot Now" original glazed donut is quite the treat.

But, if you want quality that lasts and a better selection of flavors, Dunkin is the spot. And, since we don't have a Dunkin, Sunny Donuts is a worthy substitute. A lot (all?) of the donut names have stayed the same; I suspect the signage has never changed.

The prices are better than Krispy Kreme (and for that matter, they are cheaper than some Dunkin Donuts in other states).

They are not open 24 hours anymore (as I believe they were in their Dunkin days).

Stop by and order up an Apple 'n Spice or a Boston Kreme, and take home a box of munchkins.

What on earth is going on? Years ago this place used to be "Dunkin" and once it changed to "Sunny" I didn't give it another glimpse. Since I now live over here, I pass this shop daily. One day  I break down and stop. Who left the "Dunkin" here? It has a pseudo"Dunkin" look and the donuts are pretty damn close to the ones "Dunkin" carries. I grew up on DD in New York and always enjoyed them in the South, but was disappointed when all the local (there used to one other on Capitol Ave.) DD shops closed. I rarely eat donuts since they tend to be over glazed and under flavored but Sunny has a good
combination. Glad I stopped in after all these years. Cheers to Sunny for knowing that "America Runs on Dunkin"
One note: The people behind the counter seem a little grumpy, go here bearing smiles, they need em'

I'm not a super donut aficionado or anything, so if you are a doughnut* gourmet, um...sorry?

I come here every so often because this is the last bastion of Dunkin' Donuts left out in CA.  Some co-workers pointed this place out as they like this place more than others (still prefer Dunkin'), so I came by here.  I remember the first time I came, they didn't really have many donut flavors left, and seemed kinda...annoyed that I wanted donuts.

I come here every so often still because I enjoyed the donuts.  They don't always have the flavors I want, but it mostly works out.  Each donut is 80c, so if I just want one or two for a snack, it's not too bad at all.  Plus they have ice cream (which I've never tried) and I'll see peeps here late doing the ice cream/donut run.

My one real quibble is their cake donut weight.  I like cake donuts really solid, while theirs are a little airy.  I doubt many people care, but for cake donut fans, FYI.  Worth trying though!

OK, OK...so I MAY be a donut addict but this is place has YUMMY donuts!  The raised donuts are fresh, moist, and oh so good!

I stop by this place before I go to work for either a dozen donuts, or 2 dozen donut holes...it all depends on how fat I want my co-workers to get since they need to put on about 15 pounds each in order to reach my current BMI.

The service is fast and friendly.  I am in and out of here in 2 minutes usually-5 minutes if they are busy.

Great place for your donut fix!

Based on a first time visit I would give it a 2.5 - 3.  Yes, I've had way better and this place is ok.

I came in around 10:30 and left with a Buvarian Cream donut, vanilla cream donut, glazed, donut and a cheese croissant.

The cream filled donuts which I didn't finish, were a little on the dry side.....couple bites and gave it to my garbage disposal husband.

I ate the glazed...it was ok.

The cheese croissant - I ate that for breakfast the next day.  I enjoyed it even though it was a day old.

Overall, I still think its ok and because of convenience, I could see myself going back if I have the cravings for a donut.

They do have a variety....I will probably try something new.

It's former Dunkin Donut, as those familiar with the DD chain will know that the interior looks exactly alike despite a different donut store name.

All the DD flavors are here, even the munchkins.

Chocolate glaze, chocolate coconut, powdered, boston kreme, glazed, etc etc etc. YUM.

My ex-bf and I happened to be driving down Union one night when we came upon this place.  We stopped by since we were craving a late night sweet.  OMG...they have the best donut selection I've seen from any other donut place in San Jose.  Or maybe I just haven't been to the right donut stops. But anyhoo, they have the best donut holes I've ever tasted.  They have plain, blueberry and even chocolate donut holes.  Their donuts are fresh tasting too.  Not stale like some other places.  The best thing about Sunny Donuts is the price...they are affordable aka cheap!  They also have free Wi-Fi.

An okay place with lots of variety.  We got nearly every kind of  jelly donuts but all the fruit ones were bitter.  Don't know what they did wrong there but jelly donuts should be sweet.  Oh well, the other donuts we got were okay.  Nothing special here.  Had high hopes because the family and I love Dunkin Donuts and they offer nearly the same stuff.

This was my first time visiting Sunny Donuts.  I was disappointed that a dozen donuts cost $7.50 and 6 are $4.79 compared to those I have gotten donuts for $4.99 at Supreme Donuts on Almaden Expwy but thought I'd try Sunny since it's on my way to work.

I decided to buy 6 donuts and asked to put them in a box since it was easier to carry and display since it was for folks at work.  The lady told me only a dozen come in a box - I asked if I could have a box for 6.  She said only if I pay for the box.  I asked, well how much is the box?  She said 50 cents.  It's not the 50 cents that bothered me - it was the principle of it so I won't be going back.  Their donuts may be good but I won't be trying them!

Delicious donuts! I just happen to be in the area and decided to stop in. Luckily for me the donuts were still warm and they were great. Prices are very reasonable compared to other donut shops in my area.

A big plus was the fact that they provide free wi-fi, so I was able to have my donuts and coffee while getting some work done.

For those over 30 San Jose natives out there, you'll know that this used to be Dunkin Dounuts back in the 70's/80's and even up til the mid 90's.   You'll also know this by the bright pink counter tops inside (yes, they kept the old decor). I LOVE Dunkin Dounuts and was sad to see it leave.  We have none in the Bay Area that I am aware of :(.  Anyway, I asked the owner about the switch and she said they kept some of the same taste by using some of the same cooking machinery etc.. (not sure how this worked out) but it does kinda have that Dunkin Dounut taste. Seriously.   Anyhow, not much more to say, except these are great dounuts, light and fluffy, not to heavy on the glaze like krispy kreme (yuck).  Love it.  Only thing that stops me from giving it 5 stars is that it is not Dunkin.  But close enough.

I very rarely eat donuts, but happened in here for fun, and had a very pleasant experience.  It was mid-evening, so the baker/owner came out from the kitchen to serve us.  He was very friendly.  He actually went back to the kitchen to get fresh hot donuts for us.  They were light and fluffy.  The old fashioned was crispy just as I like them.

I have been coming in this place for years and when it was Dunkin donuts it was great. When the owner dropped the franchise the place has been going down hill ever since. The mentality of this place is cheap and cheap again. First off, they won't even give you a napkin unless you ask and even then you only get just one. That's what i mean by cheap. 2nd, they have a restroom and won't even let their regular customers use it. They don't wish to clean it later so better to just lock it up. Even on the hottest days, they refuse to run the a/c. Fortunate for me, I am in and out, but the poor nice couple working nights there, have to work under slave conditions in that heat. The hours are irregular. They say they close at 10pm but on any given night they may close at 9:30, 9:45, or 9:50pm, just when you thought you had enough time to swing by for a donut. I do like the couple working evenings there and they are always nice. But lately, in the evenings when some of the fresh donuts normally come out of the oven, they won't rack them on the shelves, instead saving them for the morning customers. That's so the evening customers will be forced to purchase donuts that are 24 hours old. Normally their prices are fair but for 24 hour donuts, those prices are a rip off. In the evening, beware of old donuts lurking on the shelves!
