My mom shops here all the time. When I visit she takes me here for lunch. The deli has pretty good food, and a great selection for vegetarians, which I love!

Not too shabby. Fellow yelpers are correct, it's expensive. I eat pretty healthy and they have things here that I can't find anywhere else in the Y-S area. They only get two stars because yes, their staff isn't very helpful, or too friendly and I always get the impression that they are somehow bothered by my presence there. As bothered as they may seem, they never ask me if I need any help....
Another problem for me, the thing that really knocks them down to two stars instead of three, is the deli itself where you can order lunch. Now I'll give them that its a niche market, maybe too niche for me to enjoy. My problem is that I'm picky. Everything on their menu has something or another on it that I don 't like or want to change. When I asked about creating my own sandwhich by mix and matching a couple of different sandwiches they sell the girl first told me that they 'don't really do that', then when she read my body language that I wasn't too happy with anything on the menu her response was "well I could do that I suppose, but I'll have to charge you for both sandwiches".
Seriously?
How about I just give you a healthy tip and you figure it out? I know that I'm picky, I always have been and I don't foresee that changing anytime soon. Whenever I'm at a resturant or place like this that's preparing my food I always tip well because I understand that I'm not the run-of-the-mill, easy to please kind of girl.
Although I won't ever make the mistake of thinking I could grab lunch while I'm there, I can't say I'll never go back, but I know my way around a natural foods store. If you're new to the scene, do a little reaserch about what it is exactly that you want before you go in looking for it, and if you can't find it here, try New Earth. They'll answer your questions with slightly more knowledge than you have. -

A small store that has quite a bit of stuff. The staff can either be helpful or rude. Overall the place is pretty pricy but it is a specialty health food store.
The sandwich shop inside makes fresh and healthy items and gives you a nice place to spend a lunch away from work. -

Just had to tack on an extra star after going here several times since my first review. My doctor recently recommended several supplements I should try out, and Sunflower is an excellent place to go when you're in need of vitamins. Such an insanely overwhelming collection, but the staff is extremely friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. I was able to find what I needed very quickly with their help.
I also bought some new skin care products there recently, and their selection of products with truly natural ingredients is pretty incredible. I've recently made it a habit to study the ingredients labels of skin care products because of all the awful crap most of them contain, and Sunflower has so many safer, more natural brands. I'm moving soon, and I'm actually going to miss this store because of their beauty section!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Great place for bulk goods, I love the smell of the deli it always reminds me of my first avocado, tomato, and alfalfa sprout sandwich on whole grain bread. I used to come here as a kid with my mom and this place is still almost the exact same.

Sorry folks, only here to review the deli.
If I'm feeling like not spending a lot of money for lunch (That means 5 bucks for me...spoiled by taco trucks 45 miles north) and the thought of Taco Bell makes me gag, a trip to Sunflower is usually high up on the list of options. When you're getting a quality sammich n chips for $3.95 in this state, not much room for complaining.
Sandwiches are filling, particularly because of the bread they use (good stuff) and the sprouts. They put a FRIGGIN' LOT of sprouts on the sandwiches. No problem for me since I dig sprouts, but if you don't, consider yourself warned.
Soup can be hit or miss. Cream of mushroom? Good. Gespacho? We won't be meeting face-to-face anymore.
Now, if I could just bring myself to drink something other than water with it... -

Good sandwiches at a great price, healthy, organic foods... in Yuba City?
The staff's a bit stuck-up, so they get a 4. But otherwise a much needed business in an area in which fast food and other digestive travesties seem the only options. -

A health food store, in the Yuba-Sutter area? Great!
However, I do not go there often, simply because of the staff. They are not helpful in the least, and their noses are always up in the air. I hate the unfriendly atmosphere! The store does, however, carry items you can't find in any other local stores. -

Finally, a place for soul food. I am white, progressive and a HUGH Dennis Kucinich supporter. Before this place, I had no place to take my friend Erik, http://vegan.gaia.com, a vegan activist and ENLIGHTENED human being, for lunch when he came to town.
The Funghi-Swe leaves a little to be desired (I get claustrophobic, then I get paranoid, and then I get angry). But I love the food. The Hare Kishners that run the place are sweet, and the crowd is usually free spirited. They should have live music! -

I don't know why people keep saying everything is so overpriced there. I came out here from Missouri and I found that a lot of the stuff I would get at Sunflower was much cheaper than the stuff I would get at my local natural foods store back in MO, like a jar of Vegenaise for a whole $2 less! Sure, it's still pricier than it might be at a regular grocery store, but it could be a whole lot worse, and besides, you're NEVER going to find most of that stuff at a regular grocery store because, lets face it, most people like t eat crap. I especially love the bulk herbs. So much cheaper than buying it in individual jars.
I can understand the part about the staff, especially from the people that say it's sorta hit-&-miss. Some of them can be a bit short with you, but I've found that overall it's a friendly and helpful atmosphere. I think they probably just get a lot of local yokels in there asking really dumb questions all the time which has made them kinda leery of most people. I can understand, I do customer service too! But I've never had anybody be downright rude with me while I was there. -

We (my family) love the Sunflower! Great staff, great service and awesome products. The deli always has a good lunch and plenty of healthy baked goods to enjoy. Do your body a favor and get over to the Sunflower!

By nature, I'm just not one to be contradictory. So when others say, "I just love it there!" I usually nod in quiet agreement, whether I do or not. I honestly think to each his own. But enough is enough! Sunflower is not ALL THAT.
I have been shopping there for about a year, and although I only go about once every couple of months, I felt that it was important to support it, being a small local business and all. Well, I finally decided that it's just not a fun place to go. The ladies that work there try to put on a friendly face, but the disdain toward my 2 little ones always shows. Every time I check out, I get an impatient sigh from the same woman, because... I have no idea why. I guess I didnt read the instruction manual, "How to shop at Sunflower." I spent over $60 on 2 small bags of groceries yesterday and suffering from sticker shock, then buyer's remorse, I found the same or similar items at 2 other grocery stores in town and saved about $25. When I tried to return the items I had bought from Sunflower, I was told they do not give refunds, only store credit. I think this is an unreasonable policy in this day, when the purchase was made with a bank debit card, only one day before. So, no. I don't recommend Sunflower Natural Foods or their overrated, Mork and Mindy-era deli, for that matter. But to each his - or her - own, right? I give it 2 stars because it does carry some things no one else in this area does. -

This is kind of a weird store. It's one of those places that is perfect for picking up one or two unique items but I cannot possibly imagine doing full-blown grocery shopping here. The prices are insanely expensive (which I guess is to be expected when buying hard to find items) and the staff can be hit and miss. Sometimes they can be friendly and helpful and other times they can be a little brisk. I definitely recommend this store to anyone looking for hard to find health food items but I think you'd be better off going elsewhere for your groceries. (Raley's has a good natural foods selection).

As a comprehensive natural foods store, Sunflower is good. The best part about it is the totally reasonably priced deli food. The establishment is tucked away in a commercial/warehouse area. The store is run down, dumpy, dark, depressing and assuredly hasn't been painted since the 1960. It's not nearly as friendly and bright, as any Trader Joe's. One day soon there will be a Trader Joes here. Until then, if Sunflower wants to compete, they need to ditch the industrial location, move closer to town, and make the store more friendly to consumers.

I'm so happy that there is an actual health store in YC period. Having said that, the Sunflower goes above and beyond the regular health food store. Not only can you find a plethora of products here that are carried nowhere else in town, they have the best Deli there as well. Hands down, best sandwiches for hundreds of miles! If I still lived there, I'm sure I would still be ordering my favorite "Swiss Special" on an almost daily basis. They make great salads, bake fresh breads, and always have a great daily special. And the prices are SO reasonable!
