God I love breakfast...and breakfast on vacation even more!
Loved the ambiance and although we sat inside as it was a little chilly in the AM, there was a great outdoor patio in the back with a wine bar...but we hadn't quite gotten to wine yet....
Had a delicious omelet with a "melange" of vegetables...including sweet potatoes...would've never thought to put them in an omelet...but it was great. And delicious french press coffee! -

Yum! Really yum!
It's pretty crowded during the lunch hour and you might not be able to get a table right away but people out pretty quickly.
Stand in line and pay at the cashier, they'll bring your food out.
I felt badly for the people sitting at the tables close to wear the line was forming because we were all scrunched in surrounding their table. At least the woman was really nice and funny and I tried to cover my face with the menu so I wasn't staring at her eating.
Husband had the duck sandwich and said it was divine!
I had the organic and locally farmed grilled veggie salad with chicken. So good! I loved that there were sweet potatoes in it. I've never had sweet potatoes in my green salad before.
We both had a mimosa which was wonderful as well.
Very organic and "crunchy" but very unpretentious. Both the cashier and the guy who served our food were really friendly and chatty.
We'll definitely come here for a quick bite next time we're in Sonoma. -

This place really really rocks.
The wait was slightly annoying but anywhere that manages to make waffles with slabs of peppered bacon, whipped cream, maple syrup and bananas taste like heaven in my mouth, man this must be what stoner food means is awesome and so worth it.
The coffee was good, and the egg and bacon sandwiches are great- but the waffle...my God that waffle makes me want to fly out to Sonoma. Either that or start my own business serving waffles with peppered bacon out of my kitchen.
i would worry I'd eat my profits. -

Excellent coffee and decent pastries. Very tasty and light omelet. Nice location by the square.

This is a really cute and beautiful cafe. The back patio is gorgeous...I feel like a wedding reception would be beautiful there! The food came out pretty quickly. I tried their pumpkin waffle, butternut squash frittata, and goat cheese with piquillo peppers. Pumpkin waffle tasted delicious but the pumpkin tasted unnatural and preserved. Slightly disappointed in the butternut squash frittata because it barely had any butternut squash in it. The goat cheese with piquillo peppers was AMAZING!! i normally don't like goat cheese, but it tasted really good in this dish. The peppers were laid on top of some good quality tasting olive oil, pistachios, and crushed black peppers. My friend told me the coffee here tastes really really good as well.

The SUNFLOWER CAFFE in Sonoma was recommended to us by a usually spot on fellow food connoisseur. We walked in and it looked like a pretty cute bakery/sandwich shop/coffee shop. I checked out the menu and went with their highly touted Chicken Salad Sandwich on a Baguette.
We sat down outside under a heat lamp, and enjoyed people watching on Sonoma's busiest of streets. A few moments later, our lunches arrived. I thought it was an OK sandwich, but I definitely wasn't blown away by it. My wife, who had the identical meal but on sliced brioche, oohed and awed over it. So I thought it was ok, she thought it was great. Go figure.
3.5 stars. -

I own Destiny Wine Tours of the Napa Valley and just last Sunday had some clients that recommended Sunflower caffe for brunch. Took my family there and let me tell you this place was great. Mom said her veggie omelette was the best she had ever tasted anywhere in the Bay Area, I had a southwest chicken omelette that was excellent.Everything good from their house coffee to the service. I can't wait to go back for happy hour at the wine bar in the back !! I will diffidently recommend Sunflower to all my Sonoma bound clients.

Always eat here when I come to Sonoma I love the place... Food and atmosphere especially the outdoor patio. Today the Fritatta was so good and it was served with a nice leafy salad and French bread.

Fab! We were looking for a cafe downtown to grab a bite before we headed to our next winery and this place was cute and was packed! Inside and outside seating, really efficient staff. Their soup was amazing as were their cafe drinks. Food came out fast even though it was buzzing. Ingredients were fresh and delicious with perfect lunch portions. Definitely recommended to anyone traveling through wine country.

Quite pricey, but the most beautiful patio in the area. Believe me, I studied the reviews/menus for all. Be sure to go to the BACK patio, as there is one in the front that you might think is the only patio in the place. Do not be fooled into ordering at the front either; order in back; sit in back. :)
This is the one place to eat at for brunch/lunch if you want to sit outside after walking around the town and before enjoying some of the town's history. Coffee refills are free if you ask and they make damn good coffee here. So is the awesome filtered water that I discovered at many of the restaurants in the Sonoma/Napa area.
Everything you order is delicious, even if it does take awhile. I had a $$$ lox with bagel which ran me almost $18 (with tip) but it was so huge I could only eat half. It actually kept well in the container, and when properly set on ice at the hotel, I was happy to have the rest the next am for breakfast. This always bodes well on vacation + leftovers sans refrigeration.
You must hurry to grab your table as it fills up fast!
Be careful with the bathroom door as mine didn't lock properly and someone walked in on me!Listed in: Anything but Starbucks...., Hail to Healdsburg! Wine…

The best duck sandwiches in California. During the Spring/Summer also the best lamb burgers. They have excellent soups and incredible veggi options.

My family spent the day in Sonoma, and we arrived during lunchtime, so the Sunflower Caffe was pretty much our first stop. The food was quite good. Our group was pretty big with 10 people, so we sat at the giant circular table in the back patio. It was really great that there was such a large table because seating large groups can definitely be challenging. I definitely recommend going here if you are in Sonoma :)

Bacon waffles are good. Haven't tried them? Go here first! You have tried them? They probably weren't as good as they are here.
Another DDD destination, Sunflower Caffe is right on Sonoma Square and could be part of any Sonoma day. They are famous for the lamb burger, but we visited for breakfast. As the name implies, it's bright and yellow. The back patio is larger than the narrow corridor dining inside. We dined in the back patio area, that has a private garden feel. The dominate element back there is living flowers and plants. The area is covered but has enough openings to let plenty of sunshine in too. A peaceful setting to be sure, one that compliments the meal. This is a must try. See for yourself and form your opinion. Cheers!Listed in: Food TV

The highlight of my experience was the outdoor seating, with sunshine above and an outdoor bar that made me feel like I was in a movie eating lunch with an upscale fashion blogger. Upon recommendation, I tried the lamb sandwich and was REALLY impressed. Lamb isn't an item I typically would suggest, but it's a must at the Sunflower Caffe. I recommend showing up after 3PM to celebrate their happy hour, which includes some really great wines.
Go enjoy an afternoon in the garden. You won't regret it. -

Really good breakfast joint. We got sick of the carby continental breakfast at El Pueblo Inn and decided to buy breakfast our last morning here.
Southwestern Omelette - so delicious and full of protein!!

Our visit to Sunflower Caffe was an unexpected delight. In scouting out breakfast places in Downtown Sonoma, Basque Boulangerie was our choice for a variety of reasons: cost, convenience, and favorable Yelp reviews.
Upon coming back to the Square after a day of wedding scouting, the fiance and I were exhausted and just looking to settle down somewhere to digest the day's information. We picked Sunflower Caffe, mostly so I could recharge on coffee. Surprisingly, the coffee here was good. I preferred it over Basque; it's a little stronger and tastier. Like Basque, refills are free if you dine-in.
Sunflower has a fantastic outdoor patio, where we sat and vegged for a while. After a time, a band started setting up, and drew quite a crowd. The "after five" crowd, if you will. That's the time all the stores start to shut down, but restaurant hour hasn't quick struck. In between that time, Sunflower is the perfect place to come to chill.
Ordering food is via a counter in-door, but there's also waitress service and an outdoor bar. There are happy hour specials, and they also offered free wine tastings and a complimentary cheese spread around six. With the band striking up (think Fleetwood Mac-esque), we stayed a lot longer than we intended.
As the hunger pangs started to strike, we picked up a couple of dishes to sample. The first was the Goat Cheese Filled Piquillo Peppers, an appetizer for a reasonable $6. The peppers were stuffed and topped with fresh chevre, chopped pistachios, honey, orange zest and a generous heaping of olive oil. They tasted...interesting. The fiance loved them, I was on the fence. But it was definitely unique and well-priced.
We also split the Roasted Chicken Breast Sandwich, an $11 offering. I kid you not when I say this was one of the best chicken sandwiches I have ever had. The chicken breast was well-seasoned (rosemary and garlic, according to the website) and perfectly delectable. Despite being a breast, the meat was entirely tender and not in the least bit dry. It came with a cheese I had never heard of, cambazola, which appropriately binded the bread, and a host of exceptionally fresh vegetables, including delightfully sweet pickles. It impressed me.
Really, if you're not looking to drop an arm and leg to pay for dinner, come to Sunflower a bit early, chill out during their happy hour, and then pick up a couple of dishes to close the night. It'll make your evening really shine.Listed in: SF/SV: Save Me, San Francisco

Cute cafe with pretty and plenty of outdoor seating in back. Went here with a group of friends who insisted we HAD to eat here. I ordered the half chicken salad sandwhich and half soup with a side green salad. I love places that don't put cranberries or anything sweet in their chicken salad. This place knows how to make a good one and the baguette it was on was awesome ( I think it came on a different bread and I substituted). I had a cup of the soup du jour (black eyed pea and rice). It was good but I wished I had ordered a whole sandwhich instead. The green salad was nice and fresh and a good portion and the dressing was really good. My friends got the pork sandwhich and loved it. We also ordered an appetizer plate that had different cheeses, nuts, paste/jam and one of their blue cheese stuffed piquillo pepper. The only thing I DIDN'T like were the prices. I felt like it was a tad bit expensive for the portions. If I'm ever in Sonoma again I'll definitely come back.

I don't use the word "delightful" that often-okay I actually never use it. But to describe Sunflower Caffe, that's exactly the word I'd use. This is always my first choice for lunch in Sonoma. Their herbed goat cheese and avocado sandwich is simple, yet amazingly delicious and filling. They make a mean Thai Iced tea (random for a spot like this, right?)
I've coveted the fruit and cheese plate but I was the only one in my party interested and I decided a giant cheese plate for one wasn't the smartest idea. Nevertheless, between the fresh tasty food, the relaxing sun filled patio and the sprinkling of local art, I'll go out on a limb and say this place is DELIGHTFUL! -

I have seen this caffe several times while walking the streets of downtown Sonoma and never had the chance to step inside and enjoy, until last week. There is outdoor seating in front as well as a back patio with ample seating and a wine bar. Once you step foot into this space, grab your food order at the cafe in front and make sure to grab a spot to sit outside. Your sense of time will be erased and you'll be in instant vacation-mode once the wine starts flowing and as long as the sun keeps shining.
This spot seems perfect for the locals and tourists alike. Whether you're a coffee connoisseur or wine sommelier you'll enjoy Sunflower Caffe. the food is good, service is great and people watching is fantastic. Grab a seat! -

On the hunt for a restaurant on the square with outdoor seating in Sonoma, we hit up the Sunflower Caffe for dinner. I had been there many times for breakfast/lunch but never dinner.
The ambiance outside is great - large patio, lots of greenery and shade. My husband and I did the 50/50 switcharoo (we always make sure we are both on the same page with what we order so we can split our meals). He had the duck breast sando and I had the lamb burger. Both were really good - the duck was my fave! A nice bottle of Pinot Noir rounded out the meal nicely. No real complaints, except the meals didn't come with any sides so I was still a little hungry at the end of the meal...guess I shouldnt have passed on the dessert! Next time! -

So much more than meets the eye..
The "restaurant" is little more than a bar like area with a narrow corridor and register. Luckily, it wasn't super busy when we arrived. We placed our order and looked around for a place to sit. Upon walking through the back door, I felt a little like Alice in Wonderland. The back patio is amazing; plants, flowers, greenery, trellises, comfy seating, charming canopies, a fountain, and a quaint little bar area.
I ordered the frittata on the special board and the hubby ordered a bacon waffle. I was a bit disappointed that the frittata was served without a side but it was quite tasty and fresh.
The weather was gorgeous and the Sunflower Caffe was a beautiful start to our day.Listed in: Tailing Guy

The Sunflower Caffé is on point! Yummy food, good service & dogs are welcome! What could be better? We enjoyed a late lunch outside under a heat lamp while watching the hustle and bustle of holiday shoppers. The Sonoma square is so charming and the Sunflower Caffe fits right in with its appeal!

My friend and I stopped into this place because we were looking for a nice brunch fare. Unfortunately the meal wasn't as great as all the Yelp reviews! There was a 20 minute wait to order food and then I ended up getting a Pecan Waffle instead of the Belgium Waffle I ordered.
Note to all: don't sit at the tables in front of the Caffe because its a breeding ground for flies. Yuck!! -

Heaven, I am in Heaven!!! Have I ascended on a puffy, cotton ball cloud into the cosmos of the Gods or am I just in a effortlessly, super charming wine country cafe? Oh right, I am not in heaven, but if I do ever make it there I'd like it to resemble something similar as this: wine, sunlight, cheese, smiles, wine, oh, and cheese.
As you are ushered into Sunflower Cafe - the California sunlight beams through the large, overhanging tree branches providing shade for the patio - ultimately resembling a scene from a Midsummer's Night Dream. It's hard to avoid the overwhelming feeling of bliss. The other thing missing was tiny fairies wizzing around my head.
It's no surprise this Sonoma restaurant boasts an extensive wine list, but an excellent ambiance to enhance the pleasures of wine imbibing as well. The menu consists of what seem to be pretty typical California fare that go hand-in-hand with the laid back vibe of the restaurant. Everything from the goat cheese and Avocado sandwich to the Bay Shrimp Salad, the food was nothing short of fresh and appetizing for a sunny afternoon: almost invoking a 'picnic' feel.
They did forget to put my order in, thus creating a longer wait for my food. But considering I was on my second glass of wine, under a huge tree on a beautiful terrace, hearing the waitress's continuous and sincere apologies - I really didn't mind.Listed in: California Dreamin'

Centrally located and right off the Main Street Sunflower Caffee is a perfect place to be if you want to be where the action is. However, if you want a little more peace and quiet go in back to the lovely outside terrace which also has a bar, plenty of seating. and a wonderful fountain. We went during Happy hour which was nice but keep in mind there is a very limited selection during Happy Hour. We also ordered the cheese/fruit plate which was good enough but a little overpriced as to be expected. But, it was just what we wanted so we were happy. However, it would have been nice if our server told us what the cheeses were when she gave us our plate.
After all that cheese and wine sis and I decided to go to the front of the house to try a latte it was some of the best coffee we have tastes and that says a lot because we are picky about our coffee!!
Since we did not try any of the breakfast or lunch items I am skeptical about giving 5 stars. But rest assure next time we are in Sonoma and want to splurge on breakfast, we'll come here!Listed in: My favorite places to get…

Really enjoyed the duck sandwich. Served on a crispy baguette, it was thinly sliced almost like roast beef.
We sat outside and enjoyed the view of the square. In back they have a lovely garden patio area that is great for groups. Looked like they had a wine bar as well.
You order in line so get there before the crowds do. -

The best coffee drinks in the world. The Equator brand coffee is soooo good!
The soups are of course awesome, always delicious, made w/ love!
When it is busy you will wait a long time for your Latte, it is hard to wait for coffee, but enjoy the people in line and wait, 'cause it is the best coffee in town.
The wine bar in back is really nice, good wine at a good price.
Laid back atmosphere, a real community gathering place. Nice food, nice people. -

The best part of Sunflower Caffe is the amazing, light-filled patio and wine bar out back. A perfect setting for breakfast, which is typical fare - omelets, waffles, etc.
The food is pretty good. Upon ordering, I had to try three different things since the place was out of ingredients for all of the dishes I wanted (on a Tuesday morning at about 10 a.m.). That was a bummer, but the food was fresh and flavorful, so worth the scramble. Try the avocado egg sandwich on potato bread. -

I heard about this place from two co-workers who had been while up in Sonoma. They both told me I couldn't leave without going, and I was able to make it on my last day of vacation.
The garden area is the place to sit. It was beautiful, the weather was great and the fountain made for such a nice lunch. We filled out postcards while we waited for our sandwiches.
I had the duck breast sandwich and hubby had the lamb burger. They were both very tasty, though the lamb was a little under done for hubby so I gave him my duck after I'd had a few bites. The gruyere cheese on the duck sandwich was so gooey, it was super. I liked the temperature of the lamb burger, and the roll that it came on was nice and soft. The duck came on a crunchy baguette. Both breads were very fresh.
Great wines, the gal out at the wine bar was very helpful. Nice way to end the trip. -
Review from Cathy Y.
In the middle of our wine tour with Terrific Tours we stopped in Sonoma Plaza to grab lunch. Our tour guide DJ recommended the smoked duck sandwich, and it did not disappoint!
We sat in the beautiful back patio area on a sunny Saturday afternoon. If you order in the back (not sure if it in the same system indoors) you pay at the counter and bring a number to your table. To the duck sandwich I also ordered the monster mimosa, which was definitely monster sized! An enormous mimosa may sound silly while on a wine tour, but we were already two wineries in and could not imagine anything more refreshing than 9oz of bubbly topped with a bit of juice.
The sandwich itself is a bit pricey for the size, but it's clear they're working with quality materials here. The smoked duck breast was super tender, and caramelized onions make everything more delicious. -

awesome! I was just there this past weekend. I regret eating at this place just once. I should have gone back at least one other time for dinner.
My wife and I were there for lunch one day. Everything from the coffee to the signature duck plate/ sandwich was killer. Salad, soup...everything taste great.
this is a must for anyone in the area. -

The best outside patio garden restaurant in Sonoma! Delicious food, very attentive service, amazing mocha!

Review from Carol K.
Now here is a true find! Located in the heart of downtown Sonoma is the Sunflower Caffee. The perfect place to grab a coffee, some breakfast, lunch or dinner or enjoy a glass of wine.
The place is deceiving as when you look at it from the front, you have no idea of the lovely garden area that exists out back. Closely spaced ferns, bushes and trees add an air of exclusion to the space that is already casual in it's approach.
The way it works is simple. Step up to the bar, grab a menu, and place and pay for your order. You are then handed a number and free to sit where ever you want. Your food will come up quickly. Want water? There is a common pitcher that you can just help yourself to on the corner of the bar.
We went for lunch on a sweltering day so the homemade tuna salad seemed like the right plan. i also chose a crisp white wine that the bartender suggested and I was quite pleased!
The menu has soups, sandwiches, some all day breakfast products and a few interesting burgers. Know that everything is a la carte so if you want a side- you will need to order it or get another entree to split. I really liked the chalkboard outside with a few suggestions of wine and food pairings and had I seen it sooner, I would have ordered the burrata and tomatoes as it looked amazing.
The staff is friendly and helpful. They all seem to like working there . . .so much so that a couple of them were even there on their day off. Now that says something about a place when the staff shows up when they don't have to.
Next time you are in Sonoma and can't think of where to go- check out the Sunflower Caffe. I just wish we had found it before our last day in town! -

Walnut Creek, CA
Great food in the touristy part of Sonoma, but pricey. I am almost ashamed to admit I paid $20 for an iced tea and a duck leg. But it was tasty and I ate every bite!
This cafe overlooks the town square and it sure is a cute place to meet with friends. The rustic covered patio in the back is welcoming and has plenty of space. Perfect for a warm summer day! You can place your order in the front or back area. I opted for the duck confit, since the recommended duck sandwich has gruyere and I'm lactose intolerant. The duck was crispy and flavorful, without being overly dry or greasy. However, the arugula salad was drenched in oil...yuck. Ingredients were fresh. Artisanal bread was yummy and fresh. It was served with a small packet of butter.
I tried just a bite of my friend's duck sandwich and it was great. Food does take a while to come out during peak lunch hours...don't go there when you're too hungry. -

Came here for a few drinks before dinner and almost stayed there. Nice outside drinking garden. Staff were very friendly and the wine selection good.
Everything looked very good, they had a lamb burger which I always like to see on a menu. Wish we could have found time to eat there but maybe next time.. -

From ritual, to bouchon and beyond, I'm a well seasoned wine country coffee snob.
Of all the little cafes and bakeries from Carneros to Healdsburg, Sunflower cafe in Sonoma is my favorite little gem.
It's a warm, friendly little cupboard tucked neatly into the western shops of Sonoma square. The food has a delightfully honest NorCal flair, with its local ingredients and simple but savory composition. The air inside is filled with the smell of espresso and sweet breads, while the soft yellow light provides the perfect place to relax and read.
In nicer weather one can venture to the wine bar and garden out back. A bubbling fountain acts as the centerpiece for this well hidden Sonoma secret. Flowers and creeping vines create a living canopy on the percola above the seating area. I defy you to not be relaxed out there.
Finally, the real treat awaits you in those little red porcelain cups. The cappucinos and coffee drinks are stellar. The barista Aaron will whip you up a perfectly balanced cup of your favorite brew in no time. But be fore warned, after having it you may never be able to drink starbucks again.
I have to say, this is not a dinner spot. This is a coffee, glass of wine and a snack, mid day work.read kind of spot.
To close, I have to imagine that when great writers are looking for places to inspire them, Sunflower Cafe is that kind of place. -
Review from Jan T.
We stopped at Sunflower Caffe on a recent wine country bus tour and received a strong recommendation from our guide to stop here and eat.
I can truly say that, while recommendations can be iffy, this restaurant was a delight. I had the smoked duck sandwich (their signature dish), and it was a delight, with fresh french bread, very tasty duck, and great sauces and vegetables. Everything here is locally sourced, so the flavors are very fresh and vibrant.
Since we were on a wine tour at the time, we did not partake of any wine with lunch, but their ice tea was very tasty and nicely flavored.
Seating here becomes tight around lunch time, especially on the square-facing front of the restaurants. Despite a slight confrontation with Santa Claus, who is apparently a local with possessive tendencies, we did secure one of the tables outside and had a great lunch thereafter.
Overall, five stars our of five and a definite place for a return visit on future trips. -

I was pretty disappointed with this place.
I had no idea for dinner it was going to be go up to the counter and order your food and then they bring it out to you. It's kind of odd to order inside, go sit outside, and then walk to another bar area to order your drinks. I was not a fan of how that was set up at all.
I was excited for their happy hour but for beer they only had 2 to choose from one being PBR...are you kidding me?? We have so many amazing brewery's around here and you choose PBR?
I ordered the lamb burger and although it was DEE-LICIOUS i won't be back. For $12.95 you get no sides?? Why not some fries or a small mista salad?
Service was also below par and the woman at the counter wasn't friendly at all. We had to ask for menus and she said something along of the lines "There RIGHT there..." like we were stupid, but yet, there were no menus where she pointed. When she realized, she handed us 4 menus and we said "We only need 3" and she said "Well, put one in that rack for me". WTH? Why are you asking us to do YOUR job?
This place has potentional but it's definitely lacking.
