San Francisco, CA
It's always a special treat to go to a place that you love so much about it.
These are the reasons I love Sundance Kabuki:
I love how clean and modern it is.
I love how you can buy your ticket online and pick your seat .
I love how the audience is mature (no cell phones, talking, etc.)
I love the delicious fresh popcorn in paper sacks.
I love the option to have sexy dinner and cocktails while watching a movie.
I love the easy parking on the street or the paid garage.
I love the quality of movies they play - Sundance quality!
I love the clean restrooms.
I love the friendly, proffessional staff.
I saw two movies here in one week: one with my girls and one for a dinner date. I loved it both times!
I wish all movie going experiences were like this. -
Review from Kevin W.
You would never believe this is a cinema from the outside.
It's open and air, decorated with Californian-Japanese style, and also a green operated cinema.
Love the ability to drink liquor with my popcorn and movie. -

So when I went to see "Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" I hit the concession stand just before the previews and movie started.
I need fresh popcorn (why do the carb load if it's not worth the calories, right?) So I asked Marcos behind the counter, "Is that freshly popped" (it was not).
I'm a professional. I need the real goods.
So I suggested to Marcos that I pay for it now, see the previews that were starting and that I'd dart back out, grab my (fresh) popcorn and dodge back into the theater.
And you know what?
I didn't get that "Well, we can't do that" and other customer service b.s. Marcos just "got" it, I got the hot popcorn I needed, when I wanted it and without fuss.
EVERYONE was happy. Well, I was. And that's all that counts, right?
This example is why I love the Sundance Kabuki:
Service, service, service
(and the theater is clean, not sticky - I hate when my feet stick to the floor from spilled soda, no thank you)
I love you Sundance Kabuki!Listed in: If We Break Up, This is MY…, The Places I Go Out

Review from Dru M.
Ok...I have to start off by saying I'm in between 3 and 4 stars, but due to the cleanliness or lack there of...I have to go with 3. Hopefully I can increase my review after my next visit. Below are a few of my pros and cons.
Pros -
*Great variety and times of their shows.
*Comfy chairs in the theater.
*Even though we didn't buy any refreshments...the concession stand appeared to have a lot to pick from.
*Friendly staff
*Kiosks to buy and pick up tickets.
Cons -
*Small, filthy restrooms. Wait was about 15 minutes....pretty ridiculous for how many theaters hey have.
*Movie screens were small, which was a surprise to me. Obviously they are large enough to see everything, but obviously much smaller than the wall can handle.
Overall...I'm very happy to call this my neighborhood movie theater. I just hope they clean it up a bit.Listed in: Wonderous Western…

I love, love, love this movie theater. It's just so perfect to reserve your favorite spot and be able to sit there no matter how crowded the theater is. They sell alcohol, you can buy tickets from a self-serve machine, and not having to sit through 15 minutes of movie trailers & advertisements. It's everything your perfect theater could be...
However, they need to have better lighting at the steps because as soon as we filed into the theater, my mom stepped aside so my sister could show us where we were going, and next thing I know she had fallen...although it was funny how it happened, I was really worried my mom could have injured her already bad knee.. -
Review from Leanne S.
I have never been to a movie theatre that puts sooo much emphasis on the seating! :)
Kabuki is a great boutique theatre offering alcohol and yummy snacks. Nothing better than a glass of vino and a movie! Oh wait, why the hell don't you have nachos on your menu?? It's a question that's been plaguing us for quite some time. -

I appreciate the Kabuki.
I appreciate them trying the reserved seating model, I appreciate them allowing you to legally drink in the theater for overpriced drinks, and I appreciate them not drowing you in commercials.
But there are cons. You pay the same, pricey price for every seat and some of the seats aren't great. I saw a movie lately and it occurred to me that my seat was worth at least two dollars less than a person midway down the row.
And the people at the cashier aren't all that helpful. I guess more and more people are booking online so it should be less of an issue. -

I don't have anything new to add to all the other reviews. I love this movie theater. I'm actually surprised more theaters around SF haven't copied Kabuki's "reserved seats" option, if not the "no commercials" policy.
The overall vibe of the place and the type of movie-goer that goes to movies there just feels much more grown up, sophisticated and thoughtful. After going to a dozens of movies at the Kabuki, I occasionally go to some film at a theater like Metreon and the vibe is radically different - lots of loud talking right up to the actual showing of the movie (and sometimes during), lit-up cell phones everywhere with people texting during the film, people with their feet propped up on the back of the seat in front of them and just lots of generally inconsiderate behavior. Then there's the 20 minutes of commercials and trailers before the film you've actually come to see. Sometimes it feels like they're never going to end. It's aggravating.
I'm really glad that we have this awesome alternative theater to go to. Then to add to that, the ability to order great food and alcoholic drinks and take them into the theater to your reserved seats. So good. I love being able to do that.
One request, Sundance Kabuki - PLEASE bring back the tuna tartar on the wakami salad! It was the best item on your menu! I know you can do it without the use of the downstairs restaurant that used to make it up for you! Please bring it back! :-) -
Review from Todd C.
I'm giving you three stars because I'm trying not to be a little bitch about this.
Every time I look up the movies at the Kabuki and begin the process, because yes it is a process, of buying tickets to a showing, the "convenience fee" is always very convenient for me because it reminds me why I never go to your theatre, because of the convenience fee. Funny how that works, isn't it?
Seriously, let's talk like grown-ups about this. And yes, actually it's just called a "Fee," $1.50/ticket, though I can't imagine why it would be there other than for 'convenience'. ('Processing'? 'Holding it for us'?) But whatever; have it your way. So let's talk about this Fee. The Fee gets added on when you order online, which you kind of have to do in order to get decent seats what with their reserved seating, which, okay. Just "okay" because you know what I'd rather have more than reserved seating? A theatre where people shut up. I don't get that here.* THAT'S a convenience I would pay for, but, yeah, I don't get that here. So that's problem #1: a fee you're forced into paying because of their business practices.
Problem #2, afore-mentioned, is that people still talk here, don't act like the semi-eponymous grown-ups who purportedly occupy this movie theatre night in, night out.
Problem #3 is, fittingly, the $3 Amenity, or "Excuse me?" fee that gets tacked on, if you're buying online, right at the checkout. To put it in context, you have a penultimate page that gives you your "Amount," there's a whole table and the "Amount" column is way at the right (read: final), and it's the bottom # in that right-hand column so, yeah, anyone who's spent some time in the second grade pretty much reads that "Amount" as the total, ie, the grand total. The tricky part is, however, that you then go to the checkout page, and there are all these fields to input, they need your CC# and what have you, and in really teeny font in between a few of those fields is the information that your Actual Grand Total is, you know, $3 more than the Amount they showed you on the previous page. No explanation as to why. Just the digital legerdemain.
Oops, you appear to have lost a star over the course of this review. Indignity's a bitch, ain't she?
Honestly, if you want an grown-up movie theatre without the purloining, go to Embarcadero, or the Lumiere, or the Vogue, or the Castro for cryin out loud, now that's an adult theatre everyone can be proud of.
*Not that I'm knocking, I mean you don't get that anywhere these days, surrounded as we are at all times by Philistines, it's just that I want to call bullshit to the extent that this place purports to be a theatre for grown-ups. It's not. It's just a theatre that costs more money and has booze and nicer food (and so costs even more money). People don't act any differently while they're sitting there, they don't refrain from whispering, from working their cell phones. They act like regular Americans, golly, if a little on the arriviste side.
ps: Sorry for being a little bitch about this. -

TRY TO GET THEATRE NO. 1!
All the rooms are great, but #1 has rightfully earned the title. It has reserved seating with a table separating every two chairs, ample leg room, and is conveniently located right next to the bar. There's not a bad seat in the house & they don't kill the volume during the previews like other cinemas do.
Once you go Kabuki, everything else will seem inferior. -
Review from Mike H.
I love movies and am a dedicated watcher, at home and in theaters. I'll continue to go to Kabuki on occasion but their ticket pricing is BS. I aggressively patronize a nearby cinema which charges charges simply for alcohol, and doesn't layer extra charges on top of already-high ticket prices.
In order to not duplicate Todd C's review, I'll limit my consternation to getting charged a $3 fee for buying tickets from an automated machine in their lobby. A physical swipe of my credit card and no human interaction should lower the cost, no raise it! Ticket prices of $11.50/ea are high enough.
Anyway, here's the pro move if your movie's showing in theaters 5-6 at the top: go to the little bar for beer/wine right in front of the theater doors. Don't wait in line at the upstairs bar. -

This is how Grown Ups do the movies. The Sundance Kabuki Cinema is a classy spot to get your movie on. Forget your soda and cheesy standard junk food, this theater has way more to offer.
We decided on a movie night and couldn't decide whether to hit up drinks and dinner before or after. Time constraints brought us right to the theater with a few minutes to spare.
How it's changed since my first movie here "Batteries not included" and from the gummy candy bar to wine and beer bar, I guess the theater matured over the years as well. ;)
We hit the top level bar and ordered two Widmer Hefs, two Guinness and the Kettle Chips and dips appetizer. Nothing like enjoying a nice movie with an ice cold beer. They have a long list of wine and beer for your picky pleasure. Hehe.
You choose your seats at ticket purchase, so you can enjoy yourself in the bar upstairs or have dinner and don't have to rush to the theater to lock down prime seats. When you do make it over, they have these trays that lock into the cup holder and provide a little table. How civilized.
Yeah sure it's not exactly a cheap date, but movies are expensive anyway. Don't you want it to be worth it? -
Review from Ronny D.
I am fortunate enough to date someone who works in the film industry who gets to see free movies all the time.
So of course you can hear my long and painful groan when I was told that this theater wasn't a part of the listed free theaters my gf can get into.
However, she heard great things about this place and she wanted to check it out.
Turned out to be a great experience. We saw 50/50 at the top floor theater where they do not allow anyone under 21.
They sell alcoholic beverages to you so you don't have to sneak bottles of coors light into the theater.
Everything was clean and all the employees were friendly.
The architecture of the building was unique and the view outside of the theater was pretty cool.
Highly recommended for movie-goers in SF! -
Review from Kylie L.
This is by far my FAVORITE movie theater in the city. Yes it is expensive but oh man is it worth it! The seats are big and comfortable and every single seat has a great view of the screen.
There are 2 bars! The upstairs area is for 21+ only and they make excellent drinks, have quality beer and.... wait for it..... yes they also have food that is yummy! Of course if you just want your popcorn and soda or candy they have all of that as well but heading out to the movies where you know you will be able to sit, eat, and drink a beer makes going to the movies more of an experience.
It always feels like a date when the hubby takes me even if he isn't planning on that which is a total bonus! -

Way to make the movies FUN again!
I came here on Friday night with a group going to see the movie Shame. A friend had already bought tickets prior to us showing up, so I bypassed the box office and everything. Upon heading up to the top level, an usher checked our IDs and recited his five favourite movies that came out during my birth year, 1987. I thought to myself "This guy really knows his cinema!". It's always awesome to see people actually engrossed in their jobs, especially when working in the public arena. I see that and I think "Wow, these guys know what they're doing and I can't wait to come back!".
Continuing on, at the top of the venue is a bar that serves food as well as specialty cocktails. i didn't order anything from here, but the food looked great. There was even a little mini bar RIGHT OUTSIDE OF OUR THEATER! They had a few bottles of wine and a couple beers available. Blue Moon was calling me, so I grabbed one. $5, fair enough for a night at the movies.
The theater itself was super comfortable, probably the most comfortable seats I've every laid my butt in! I could have fallen asleep in them.
I had a great time here and I will definitely make it a deal to see a movie here whenever I can. -
Review from Gev M.
Yes it is grand... and comfortable... and serves tasty food ... and let's you get hammered ....
BUT -
Not one of their staff members can fully explain what the "amentity fee" really is. If I am going to pay an additional $3 on top of my already expensive $12 ticket, shouldn't I know where my money is going? Also, different color codes (green, red) = different fees, so good luck figuring out what the experience is going to cost you ahead of time.
Make sure to either reserve your tickets online or arrive one hour before showtime if you are trying to see a new release. They sell out quick. Real quick. -

I still love Sundance Kabuki. I will always love Sundance Kabuki. This update is more on my previous sarcastic remark on annoying children in theatres. Maybe I'm getting older, but this particular experience left me glowing with hope for the future...
One of my favorite memories of being in a theater:
Five minutes before the last Harry Potter film came on, a little girl in the seat in front of me spins around, looks straight at me and exclaims, "Are you ready for Harry Potter?!"
"Yeah!"
"It's gonna be AWESOME!"
And I totally high-five her.
My perspective sure changed between Parts 1 and 2.Listed in: San Francisco Favorites

Review from Dave B.
I used to go to the movies all the time. And, I really mean all the time. A good day was a double feature. A great day was three. A superb day was four.
(And, no, I've never snuck into a movie.)
Now I go to the movies a lot less frequently. Maybe it's getting older and having much more competition for my time. Perhaps, it's just the quality movies though that's likely a specious argument since I'm not really a snob about what I see. The audience member on their cell phone or the $4 soda has gotten on my nerves more than once. But one of the biggest problems has always been getting good seats at a popular show.
Enter the brilliance of the Kabuki: you can reserve seats in advance! And, they have shows for the 21 and over crowd. There's some serious genius going on here.
How can they earn another star? Lower the food prices. They are as ridiculous as almost every other movie theater. It's just plain wrong. I'm all for making a profit, but this is clearly taking advantage of the monopoly you have on your customers.
Kudos for going green. -

Wow. I must say. For some reason, I always just thought the theater in Japantown was for foreign films, but when I went inside I decided to see a blockbuster and it was very warm and accommodating.
The best part is picking out your own seat in the theater!
The screen and room size is just like any ordinary theater, but the seats are very comfortable. -

Mice. Lots of Mice.
I saw Money Ball in Auditorium 1 and within the 1st 20mins of the movie I spotted 4 different mice just in my 8-10ft viewing radius. Later I spotted many more baby mice. What made matters worse is when I left in the middle of the movie to complain to the staff, they couldn't have cared less. "Oh yeah, that's been going on for quite a while now. We put traps out but other than that there is nothing we can do." No offer for a refund, no apology, no sympathy what so ever. Given that Auditorium 1 is the forum the shares space with the bar & kitchen, I am suspicious of how clean their kitchen is. Sundance was my go-to theater to watch movies to the extend that if a film was not playing at Kabuki, I wouldn't watch it. Now I promise to never to return. No so much because of the mice, but rather because of the staff's complete disregard of their patrons experiences. -

One of my favorite places in the city to watch a movie. You can pick your specific seat, get a drink, and not worry about little kids disrupting your drinking, er, movie experience. I just wish they'd have a bathroom intermission so the drinking wouldn't disrupt the movie as much!

This is the best theater I've ever been to.
S.Heart and I watched the last showing of Sherlock Holmes. He bought our tickets on their website a few days prior. It was $11, plus a ~$3 fee per ticket. I'm still unsure what this fee is for, and no where on their website can I find an explanation - minus one star. (If only they served nachos would I give this star back.) The perks of buying your ticket online: 1) bypass the box office when you arrive, and 2) choose your seating. I recommend anywhere on the third row up. We avoided the balcony rail from blocking our view at this level.
The best thing about this theater, and why we chose it in particular, is the Balcony Bar. Buy your drink(s) at the bar, and enjoy it while watching the movie. Perfection. The bar offered special cocktails - The Sherlock, and The Holmes. How cute.
The seats are great. Very squishy. In between every two seats is a convenient, roomy table to set your drinks and snacks on. No need to leave your goodies on the floor or hold it throughout the movie. Yes! And the leg room is ample; I didn't have to contort my legs to give way for those those kind of annoying people who needed to use the bathroom mid-movie.
This theater didn't smell like old popcorn. I'd definitely come back! -

This place is full of shyt. They use to be an art-house movie house but since they fancied it up its just an over-priced commercial theater. It's more or less the same films you can see at the AMC. They say they charge more because they don't show advertisements before the show. Lies! They just show advertising for their brand, so you see commercials for their bar and restaurants. Its still advertising to me. Assigned seats suck! And if you get stuck in one of those little side theaters for $14, my TV at home is bigger. I'm boycotting.

Drinking + movies, what's not to like?
I've only been once and I didn't particularly like the movie; however, the full experience was great. Ever since I left Texas, the home of the Alama Drafthouse, where food and drinks flow freely (can food flow? well, you know what I mean), I have missed having a buzzed theater-going experience. Well, now it's back.
It was a little odd getting the drinks from the lounge into the theater; you're only allowed to take certain paths, which was confusing a few drinks in.
Picking the seats ahead of time was kind of weird, but at least it guaranteed we could all sit together. The seats rocked more freely than most theater seats; that was fun (thought I didn't want to annoy the person behind me).
I wish I lived in the city sometimes, just so I could frequent places like this. Alas... -
Review from Kat F.
I personally haven't taken advantage of the full bar at Kabuki as I like to enjoy movies sober, and given the esoteric roster of movies on display here, I need every available brain cell to be alert and ready to analyze every last detail. But it's a terrific perk for my American friends that enjoy drinking alcohol at every given opportunity.
There's always something playing that I want to see, to the point that I haven't been to another theatre in San Francisco because Kabuki is just such a pleasant experience.
Self serve ticketing and assigned seating (plus the ability to hand select your seats) are an absolute treat! The theatre seats themselves are super comfortable and nicely staggered in a way that you always have an adequate view of the screen, even if someone with the longest torso known to man plops down in front of you. And unlike some movie theatres, the temperature inside is always just right and you aren't needlessly blasted with A/C to the point of shivering throughout the movie. Minimal previews and no obnoxious pre-roll ads or games playing while you wait for your main feature to begin. I adore this theatre. -

I went to see twilight's "Breaking Dawn". It's always nice to be able to purchase tickets online, but what I liked best is that there's also a seating chart that lets me pick out where I want to sit for this movie. It's good to know that a seat is waiting for me when I arrive so that I don't have to rush to get a good seat, especially when it's a box office hit like "Breaking Dawn". I picked 2 balcony section seats (which you have to be at least 21 to sit in that section) and even though the seats were located in the far back, I was still able to see the screen. If you like to drink wine or beer while watching a move, there is a bar next to the balcony section and you can bring your drink with you inside the theater. It can be frustrating to find parking, but they do have a parking garage. I was lucky to find parking on the sidewalk a block away and it was free after 5pm. I took away 1 star because with people having a few alcohols, they can get a little rowdy and it gets annoying. If you don't like the rowdiness, there are other screens in the theater that you can go to that doesn't have the bar section. I would definitely come back to watch a box office hit movie premier here because I know I'm guaranteed a ticket and a seat!

Def not what I expected--I completely agree with all the other reviewers. The fact you can choose your seats is a great idea (except there was no one else in the theatre when I went, so it was irrelevant for me). You should definitely try to get the first row of the back section--great bar to kick your feet up on.
I just don't get why Margin Call was not in a 21+ theatre. I would have loved to been able to drink and eat while watching, but it was still fine. Food was not great, but not too important to me. -

What a gorgeous modern movie theater. Steeper prices than the normal theater... so being the curious cat that I am, I asked the counter person why it was more expensive, and she had absolutely no clue, lol. Had to ask the manager for the answer.
Anyway, this gorgeous theater is multi-level w/ a restaurant style food area, bar and even art gallery (closed when I was there). Seats are super comfortable and I literally melted in it. Lot's of leg room and you have no fear of a stray rat running under you. The staff seems to be a tad bit uptight, but hey that's show business (in the mind at least).
I rate this as a 4.5 for pure beauty and comfort. Easily a 5 if only the staff was a little less defensive when answering a few simple questions. Still a fun place to watch a movie- minus a few bucks. -

Tired of Sneaking your booze into theaters? Tell your girlfriend to take that beer out of her purse and tell her to put her heels on, because you are about to take her out to for drinks and a movie...at the same place!
Friday night is not wasted at Kabuki because they have a great bar selection and many choices of above-average movie snacks. The fact that I can feel classy at the movies with a Martini in my hand and a girl on my arm takes movie night off the "Last Resort" list for my weekends. Now this is what I call "Classy Adult Cinema"

This is easily the best theatre in town. I don't know what to say that hasn't already been said but it's all true. Big comfortable seats with tables in between 'em. A bar and restaurant that lets you bring food and drinks into the movie with you all for only a couple bucks more than you'd pay at the AMC. Baller.

My only complaint is that I'm usually a little too drunk to remember the movies... Which isn't much of a complaint at all, in my opinion. I don't remember seeing the Hangover 2 for example.
This theater if comfy, you can usually pick pretty good seats the day of before 4 PM online.
Whole heartedly recommended for a good, relaxing time. -

I like the Kabuki always have, it's a comfortable movie theater, I was a bit turned off about Hollywood coming in and taking the charm right out of it...but it looks amazing and I can say that with a cocktail in hand in the balcony. Movie and a cocktail is just so much more relaxing.

We recently saw "Take Shelter" here which was excellent. This is our go-to movie theater because it's sleak and pretty inside, theres a legit bar with yummy food, desserts and cocktails that you can take into the theater or there's loungey seating. BUT this is the real reason: 21 and over theaters!!! You get to bypass the annoying teenagers that yell shit during the movie or laugh at the sad parts!!! AMAZING! I used to avoid going to the theater to see movies for that reason alone, I like to watch in silence and you get that here along with lots of other perks!
ALSO you reserve your exact seats at purchase (online ahead of time or at the ticket booth) so you dont need to worry about getting there early to get good seats! -

Love watching movies here! For only a few bucks more than a normal theater, you can get balcony seats and there are drinks and food. Great for a fun date night out.
Tip: if you get balcony seats, don't get the first row because it's hard to see over the railing. -

Clean. Roomy. Reserved seating. FULL BAR! Nuff said. I will pay the extra $3 for the convenience and ease and the option for a cocktail any day!
