Review from Anne Marie B.
Manhattan, NY
What's not to love about a place that has mounds of fresh seafood for your gastronomical pleasure?
Cathy Y. and I stocked up on a seafood feast for ourselves on NYE (aka OYSTERS and crab...and seaweed salad, but that seems less relevant). Cathy and I are obsessed with all things oysters, so a place that sells fresh ones for under a buck a pop is pretty much our dream come true. Although, yes, they do sell pricier ones, but none over $1.25 and that definitely beats restaurant prices.
We had the entire array of oyster varietals (i'm pretty sure no one refers to them that way) at our fingertips...or more accurately, tong-tips (that doesn't quite sound right). We considered taking home a live crab or lobster, but lacking a large enough pot or the motivation that goes with it on NYE, we opted for the precooked crab legs. We steamed half of them, ate the others cold, made some drawn butter to dip them in and omg were they divine! Cathy gets all the credit for oyster shucking, and halfway through our *cough*6 dozen?*cough* oysters we discovered her pomegranate vinegar which made a zesty mignonette.
I don't know other places in the city that sell fresh seafood at similarly low prices, but I would trust anything I saw here. The staff was friendly and helpful when we had questions about sashimi grade fish, and the selection was pretty big. I just wish I'd discovered this place when I still lived in SF. -

Wow, this place is like Seaworld with cheaper snacks...and you can eat all the fish. So maybe more like a SeaFoodWorld. I've been here twice so far and love everything about the place - excellent seafood, clean store/tanks, friendly store owners/workers, and great prices.
The store is lined end-to-end with huge tanks with live crab, lobsters, oysters, and clams. There's also a great selection of fresh fillets/steaks, shrimp, and random sides like seaweed salad. If you want see a ninja badass at work, ask for the monger to kill & clean the crab - he nabs the live crab barehanded, weighs it, and then slices in half in one swift chop. They do it free of charge, but that doesn't include robbing you of your manhood by taking care of your dirty work...
Amazingly fresh seafood aside, the prices are exceptional (crab $/lb was half that of Whole Paycheck) and the store is very clean (I saw them cleaning out the tanks one by one the last time I went).
All in all a solid 5-star store - 3 stars for great seafood and 2 stars for mongers with ninja reflexes! -

I honestly don't know too much about seafood markets but this place rocks based on my experience.
It has an amazing selection of fresh seafood: Lobster, crab, scallops, mussels, oysters, salmon, etc. The list goes on and on...
Thumbs up on the following:
-The lobsters that I bought were fresh and live. Poor Snappy and partner when I had to cook them. They died for a good cause: A delicious meal with the GF.
-Right when I came in, I was greeted by a super friendly Asian dude. He even gave me tips on how to cook the lobster which worked out perfectly.
-Oysters: Oh boy! They had all types of oysters. Seriously, I've never seen such a variety like this anywhere else. Screw driving to an oyster farm, the oyster farm is right here in the city and you just don't know it. Again, the dude gave a great recommendation and I was not disappointed at all.
-The market is clean and did not smell fishy. Well it did slightly but not in the bad way that you sometimes encounter when a place is packed with fish. I appreciated this a lot.
Overall, I had a great experience. My seafood meal was a success and everything was exceptionally good.
Five stars without a doubt. -

Loved the selection of oysters - they were incredibly fresh and tasty. The prices are very reasonable. I was excited to see the tank of Maine lobsters here. I will definitely buy all of my seafood from this market - worth the walk down from Noe.

Step 1: Buy a shucker and learn how to use it; step 2: head over to Sun Fat for the best fresh oyster selection in the city, bar none. Two other great things about this place: low prices and a friendly staff. One of the 2 dozen oysters that I had picked was slightly open. The guy noticed it and replaced it for me. A scholar and a fisherman.

Simply one of the best places to buy seafood in the city and their 'annex' - Basa's on 24th at Folsom - is my favorite place to eat seafood for lunch. Clean, fresh, friendly. Wide variety of fish for all cultures, palates and recipes. Much, much better (fresher, higher quality and cheaper) than Whole Foods or any other 'upmarket' joints.
Plus you're buying fish from people who know fish and can talk fish because they do this for a living - not some guy 6 months out of a Comp Lit degree from Cal... -

My BF loves me because I keep his belly happy. For today's menu- I chose red snapper. It was as fresh as can be....you can tell by the clarity of the eyeball. It didn't look misty grey as if it had died a horrible death during the plague. I know fish markets aren't necessarily an OCD'ers dream but this place is cleaner than most and they are meticuluos about cleaning their fish and taking the time to debone. I was grateful. I left with a 2 large beautiful fillets that I cooked on a cedar plank while utilizing the fish heads and bones for an amazing fish stock with kaffir lime leaves......BOOYAH my bf had a slamming premade lunch the next day.
Sunfat should be renamed SUPER FRESH! Me likes! -

This is an excellent fish market in the Mission. We go here when we are in a hurry and don't have time to go to 99 Ranch Market. It's smaller, but the selection is still very large and fresh. The prices are also lower than in the supermarkets.
If you live in the Mission, this should be your choice for fresh seafood! -

This is the best seafood place I've found in SF. I've tried Whole Foods, little boutique seafood stores but this place is affordable and just as good. Great quality, customer service and variety. There's really no reason to pay more somewhere else.
I've gone there to buy fresh crabs at the height of the season to bring to NY for a boyfriends family.
Made an amazing cioppino for about 2/3 of the price had I gone to Whole Foods.
Only minus is that parking can be a bit difficult. -

The biggest selling point about Sun Fat to me is the freshness which just can't be beat. But when you add in the price, it's the go to joint for me, hands down, and the help here is not just friendly, but they really are helpful because they just know what they're talking about. The owners (apparently an Asian family?) also pay attention to keeping it clean which, when you think about thousands of slimy fish and crawly sea things, is probably a challenge in the least. So when I add it all up between the quality of the fish, the great prices, friendliness and cleanliness, I don't go anywhere else.

A small seafood store in the mission, this place has a huge variety of seafood. All fresh, great cuts of fish, live crabs, lobsters and fish.
The worst thing about the place, the smell of fish.
This place is an excellent alternative to Costco when you want to cook in bulk for a big party, pay cheap prices, but have it be fresher than Costco.
The live crabs are $5.99 a lb. I have only purchased the salmon from there. My gf bought a dozen live crabs to take with us to NY to cook for thanksgiving at my families dinner.
The staff is very friendly, helpful and won't judge you if you feel like a complete idiot handling crabs like its a hydrogen bomb. I say that because I had that "hmm yes yes, nice piece of crab there, uh huh". They could sense me ignorance when picking seafood and shellfish, and there were very helpful without seeming condescending.
The force is strong with them.
I will be shopping here for my next bbq for sure! -

I found out about this place thanks to yelp. Picked up some crab and mussels saturday afternoon. A few hours later we had a hearty meal. There is a good selection of seafood at this market and it is fresh as ever. It is definitely more affordable than wholefoods market. The staff at the store are friendly too incase you have questions or are looking for a specific item. All the goodness at a reasonable price, Couldn't ask for more.

Cheap cheap cheap!
Here are a few of the things I've learned to cook by going to Sun Fat:
Fried Sardines
Scallops
Ceviche
Fried Calamari
Boiled Crab
Mexican Spicy Crab Soup
Baby Octopus Pasta
Seriously - if you're into cooking, this place is a Godsend, because you can get all sorts of fancy ingredients for cheap. When I used to live in the Mission, I'd get a bottle of wine, a nalgene bottle full of water, and an oyster knife, and I'd come here, get a big bag of oysters, walk over to Dolores Park, and have a giant oyster feast! Fun! -

Fresh fish, clean shop, helpful staff (great if you don't know what you're doing with seafood!). Perfect.
I've been there several times and they offer a fresh selection of very reasonably priced shellfish and non-shellfish, also known as fish. Delish (sorry, couldn't resist). The first time through the door I'd never cooked a piece of fish or lobster or crab etc... The staff helped me pick the right size lobsters and gave me good directions. Same thing when I came back and needed a nice white fish and had no idea how to cook the thing. Both meals were a huge success and I'm a loyal customer.
Oh, in addition to fish, they also have a selection of spices, boils, lemons, etc. Sun Fat can really be a one stop shop for a seafood entree. -

A few years back when I first stepped into Sun Fat for a look-see, I was taken aback by the large tanks of Maine Lobster and Dungeness Crab. Is this the Mission branch of the Monterey Acquarium? When plentiful I've seen lobsters priced at $8 a pound. Dozens of oyster varieties are less than $1. And always fresh.
Certainly when it comes to seafood (and produce) you want to shop where it's busy, busy, busy so you get fresh, fresh, fresh. And Sun Fat is clean and efficient with good traffic flow and attendants to get you in and out. Lots of restaurants buy here.
Next time you go, ask if they have fresh spring rolls. These shrimp delights are hand rolled nearby and go for $3 a pair, including peanut sauce for dipping. If they're not fresh, they'll suggest coming back tomorrow. -

Sun Fat is a local business which I would really like to support and their prices are amazing. Unfortunately, the more I know about the state of our oceans, I cannot buy much at Sun Fat in good conscience anymore (except their squid and sardines) http://www.greenpeace....
They stock farmed Salmon, farmed shrimp, Tilapia, Cod and many of the other top offenders in environmentally degradative farming/fishing practices. I am a personal chef and would like to provide my clients with variety but i'd also like to see our oceans thrive. http://www.amazon.com/...
For the past 6 years I have tried to get the polite staff at Sun Fat to tell where the different fish is from but I can never squeeze enough information about the products they have. If you can't get this information then you cannot use the Monterey Bay Aquarium website to your advantage. Cod fish for example is responsibly caught in Iceland but the wild cod imported from the Pacific is not. I just don't think Sun fat is providing their customers the transparency needed to charter these murky waters....

Best seafood market. Hands. Down.
Without a doubt, huge selection, WHOLESALE PRICES, and quality fresh as can be fish. These fishmongers KNOW what they're doing, offer tips to prepare what you want, and give you the best they have. I had a craving for cioppino but didn't want to pay Tadich Grill prices for it, so I decided I was going to make my own. Pound of king crab legs, pound of large diver scallops, pound of mussels, pound of manilla clams, pound of red snapper, & lemons. Guess the total.
Anyone? Anyone?
$30 bucks.
Thats right. You heard me. Would have gotten lobster if I didn't get there at closing, when all they had left was 15 POUND LOBSTERS in the tank.
To top it all off, they got my seal of approval when she made sure to look at each and every scallop to get the best (not torn), and biggest ones she could find. Turning each one over to double check. And I made enough cioppino for about 8 people.
I love you Sun Fat. You're so good to me. -

LOVE this fish market. The fish is FRESH! The staff is friendly and knowledgable. They will clean, gut, scale and even filet whole fish for you just for the asking. There is a tremendous selection of oysters, crab and lobster in live tanks. I buy all my fish here now.
They even inspired me to do my first whole roasted fish recently. Red Snapper Vera Cruz. Thanks to their help and advice it was a smashing success.

Review from Helen V.
So I came here based on the pricing of oysters. I've been on an oyster binge since I moved here... OMG, this place has I think over 12 varieties of east coast and west coast oysters. And ranging from 0.65 to 1.50. Of course you will have to shuck them yourselves. But seriously, I just ate at this one place for Marin Miyagi for $2.50 an oyster and at Sun Fat, it's 0.85. Woot. The lady who put the oysters in the bag for me actually went through them and picked the bigger sized ones for me without me having to request it.
They also have crab for 6.99/lb and lobster for 8.99/lb. I'll definitely have to update my review when I pick up some fresh seafood from here. :) -

Great seafood selection. Great price. Great service. AND surprisingly clean.
They have everything any seafood maniac can ever wish for. Live oysters and clams -- numerous variety. Crabs. Lobsters. Fish...tuna, salmon, halibut...you name it, they got it. Whole fish. Live fish. Fillet. Frozen seafood in plastic bags. Jarred oysters. Assorted shrimps. Scallops both big and small. Poached octopus. Squid. Prepacked sushi ginger, salmon roe, and wakame seaweed salad...and even Vietnamese salad rolls.
I went today for some crabs and clams. Crabs were $7.99/lb and clams were $3.99/lb. I really appreciated that the lady who was helping me weren't just trying to make a sale. She kept telling me that the crabs were expensive and people rarely purchase them at that price. I would've taken her adivce but my boyfriend really wanted a crab feast, so I got them anyway. Much better and cheaper than restaurant crabs still. The lady was very nice and helpful. She gave me some basic recipes on how to make the crabs and clams and offered to hold my order for me next time if need be after hour if I can't make it due to difficulty in finding parking. Only certain items can be held after hour like the stuff that they don't need to clean and prep because they need to clean up the store.
The store was very clean for a seafood market. Of course you can still smell the sea water smell and some fishy smell but not the rotting fish smell that you'd commonly find in Chinatown's seafood market. The floor wasn't flooded and slippery so you can walk around and check out their selection of seafood. They don't make it uncomfortably for you to browse around which I also really appreciate.
Parking wasn't too difficult for me today but that area is not abundant in parking. You may have to park a couple blocks away and walk over. -

My mom and I bought 4 dungeness crabs here for half the price you would find anywhere else. We prepared it in the oven with plenty of garlic and butter. It was New Years Night. My dad made a toast to us with cheap champagne that made me cry. Even though I've never told him this, he is my hero.
That night, we eat. A lot.
Sun Fat is the best seafood distributor in the city in my estimate. They're Chinese/Vietnamese, so they reserved the best crabs cuz my momma told them so. She is also my hero. Love her.
5 stars.

I take tourist friends/family here. "This," I say, grandly, "Is where I get my fishstuffs."
They rarely have any idea that such a place can exist without an accompanying supermarket.
As much as piles of dead fish go, Sun Fat has drop dead sexy dead fish. Dishes I've made from their ingredients have gotten me laid enough that I suspect them of selling date rape fish, but my survival instincts keep me from checking that out too closely.
There's another Sun Fat in Oaktown, and it's even better, but I keep forgetting how to cross the bridge. I hear BART goes there, but I don't believe rumors.Listed in: I Heart SF

Really nice people.
Good quality for not too expensive. I left with 4 pieces of salmon (about 5-6 oz.) for less than $15. As a first timer, I had even come in here, looked around, ran across the street to Mission Meat Market, and come back because the quality, freshness, and presentation looked so much better at Sun Fat.
They had a great selection, although no wild salmon like I wanted; had to settle for the farmed :( All kinds of shrimp, octopus, scallops, mussels, clams, etc. It was also nice that when I took my salmon out of the package later that evening to cook, there was nary a stinky fish smell to be had. Freshness. They skinned in for me too.
My only complaint was that there was kind of no organization in the way they were taking orders and ringing people up. It was hard to tell where to stand and who had already been served. A better line-forming/ringing up station would be great.
Overall I would definitely come back and get some good quality fish at a great price! -

After leaving the mission 8 months ago, this is the one store that I miss the most. They always have the same stuff that Bi-Rite sells, at a fraction of the cost, plus 10x's more selection. My favorite picnic activity is to grab a bunch of $.75 Oysters and take them up to Dolores with a bottle of Tapatio and a lemon from one of the neighboring mexi-marts. Or you can pick up some cheap whitefish, then goto a mexi-mart and get a can of beans, tortillas and an avocado and make some quick fish tacos at home.
As noted above, they close at a quarter to 6. -

This is by far one of the best sea food markets I've ever been to.
I came here many times while I lived in San Francisco to get fresh fish for dinner and it was always so fresh and so tasty. The service is excellent. There is never a wait and plenty of different types of seafood to choose from. Much cleaner and healthier than a fish market not far away in my opinion.
Once I came in and there was a guy ordering fish that had a parrot just chilling on his shoulder. I thought, "What a well behaved parrot!" I would think it would like to have some fish for dinner. Only in San Francisco eh?
Several cool things to watch are how they butcher the fishies. They will gut it for you and you can watch as they do it on the counter right there. CREEPY! They also sell the crabs to you live so they are much fresher when you get home. I once saw the salesperson put one in a bag for a lady and I thought how creepy it would be to feel it wriggling on the way home.
If you like it fresh or fresher than the normal fresh. This is the place to come!
Oh and their salmon is to die for!!!! -

I craved crabs.
I yelped.
I came to Sun Fat.
I sucked my crabs hard the day after I recovered from my stomach flu.
Yummmmm!!!!!!
Forget about Fisherman's wharf. It's for the tourists who know nothing about the city aside from their guide book.
When I got there, the lovely cutie crabs are swimming in 2 huge tanks of clear water. I asked the guy to grab one for me, he did, an energetic babe indeed. I paied $16.00 for a damned big crab that kinda scared me, someone who's never dealt with a crab that's alive.
When I got home, I boiled a big pot of water. When I tore the paper bag that has the crab open, the crab was still moving, my roommate screamed. I slowly slided the babe into the pot of boiling water, boiled it for 20 minutes. At the same time I made a dipping sauce that my mom always made for crabs. Here's how:
1 tbsp grated ginger (use the ginger grater, not the cheese grater)
1 tbsp asian rice vinegar
1 tbsp sugar
I dumped them all in a food processor, which made the texture kinda weird, but it tastes just right.
Awesome crab!! So meaty, so sweet, so much juice! And the shell was so easy to break that I finished it up without any utensils!! My teeth are more than enough.
I like Saskia's review:"They're fresh and they don't have to put "Fresh" on their sign. Because if you have to say it, it probably isn't true." I went into the other store just across the street to Sun Fat, YUCK!! The crabs there were swimming in this brown colored tank of water, and fish lying around your ankle level.
Sun Fat is the best. Dungeness Crabs are awesome!! -

We ventured here on Easter morning looking for Dozens of Oysters for our Indoor Oyster Shucking Adventure.
Great place to get fresh seafood at very reasonable prices.
Summary:
- 9 dozen oysters for $106; mix of 6 different types of oysters. Cheap!
Kumamoto- $1.25 each
Kushi- $0.85 each
And a bunch of others that i honestly can't remember
- Fast, efficient service
- For a FISH market, this place is Clean, doesn't smell at all and everyone was super helpful and friendly
- Prices ranged from 65 cents to $1.25 each. We were quoted $1.50-$2 for each oysters @ Fisherman's Wharf- unshucked! RIDIC!
- The only Minus would be parking- terrible street parking...
But if you were having a huge Seafood Party/ Clambake/ Oyster Shucking party, this is the place to go! -

I feel that adding my review would be superfluous among all these raves, because I too have only the best to say of Sun Fat Seafood Company. But, let me add my own inside vision into this great resource for fresh seafood: If you need to make a seafood or fish stock, go toward the back. There are pieces of salmon tail, or head or catfish pieces that are extremely inexpensive and there's nothing like using these "throw-away" parts for starting a great seafood stew or chowder.
Then also, they will totally clean the crabs for you. You'll pay for the whole crab, but will just bring home the legs and chamber parts. A lot of Asians will buy them whole, alive, and kicking because we have a jones for the crab butter that you find inside the shell after it's been steamed or boiled... an acquired taste, indeed. Some dishes will call for this butter to be mixed in with curry for a crab curry dish.
They'll have fresh live crayfish from time to time: steam or boild them and suck they little heads, bite they tiny tails.
Also periwinkles... Periwinkles! These are sea snails that are also steamed or boiled and are picked out of their shells with toothpicks and dipped in garlic, parsley and butter a la escargot bourgogne.
Two dozen mussels will cost you less than $5 and you can whip up an inexpensive mussels fra diavolo (marinara sauce with a lot of red pepper flakes added) and linguine pasta. A great inexpensive dinner for two.
This place is one of San Francisco's great neighborhood treasures! The only challenge is parking but you can get over that if you have a friend drive with you and have them circle the block a couple of times.
