2 reviews for Sun Buggie Fun Rentals
This is the only dune buggy rental company (in the United States) that let's you just drive their buggies freely, without a guide, in 1,000's of acres of dunes.
I found my buggy, the cheapest of the lot ($195 for 90 minutes), to be way too slow, but you get what you pay for. Wait, did I get $195's worth? Hmm...
The throttle pedal was also so difficult to press down that my calf cramped from the strain. I had to drive with my left foot on the gas for the rest of the time.
Advice: If you want an awesome buggy experience, tell them you want the ADA car ($250/hour). It's equipped with a hand throttle, for the disabled, and it goes 60mph on the sand - twice as fast as most of their other buggies. You can do pretty much whatever you imagine in this ride. Or, so I'm told.
If you don't want to spend $250 for an hour of fun on the dunes, then rent a 4wd Ford Escape, from Hertz. It's $115 for 24 hours, and it's way more thrilling than a 30mph buggy.

I'd highly recommend you avoid this business - I honestly think it's a rip off at best and a scam at worst. Their rentals start at $99/hour, but they'll tell you they don't have the cheaper models and you have to rent the $139/hour model. Then they'll tell you they have a 3 hour minimum rental. Both can be negotiated if you put up enough of a fuss, but you shouldn't have to.
The worst part is when you get the dune buggy; they're underpowered, difficult to steer and very poorly maintained.
We rented a dune buggy, and after 20 minutes it broke down in the dunes. I piece of piping connecting the steering column to the wheels had bent. This piping was rusted and had already been bent, but when I pointed it out in the initial inspection, I was told this was done on purpose by the company's mechanic.
We were provided a number by Sun Buggy to call in case anything happened, but no one picked up the phone when we called. We ended up calling the 1-800 number to the company headquarters in Vegas, but we were stuck in the dunes for over an hour and a half before someone came to pick us up.
And to boot, they charged the full two hour rental ($300) plus took $200 of our deposit as 'damages' to the buggy.
