26 reviews for Summitpointe Golf Club
Finally had a chance to play here this weekend. Was really impressed by the whole experience. I was a little apprehensive beforehand based upon some of the reviews I've read here and from just talking with locals who had played here before. In hindsight, I'd have to say it's all fairly accurate. The fairways are consistently narrow. The greens are lightning fast and it really tests your putting distance management considering how slanted the greens were. Overall, I'd say the greens likely added 4-5 strokes to my score. The course conditions are above average; no complaints here. That said, what I like most about Summitpointe is the course layout and in particular, all the elevation changes. It's really a beautiful course in retrospect. I would not recommend this course for beginners since over half of my shots were on uneven lies. I think having played in similar courses nearby (Callippe, Lake Chabot, etc.) really helped me out a lot.
The green fees are reasonable ($66 incl. cart for Sun morning tee time). And the marshalls do a good job of keeping pace of play moving; we finished our round in a litle over 4 hours. My one complaint about the driving range is that you're not allowed to use your driver (a small complaint).
In comparison to Spring Valley, which is just 10 minutes down the road, Summitpointe is a substantially more difficult course to play. However, I consider myself lucky to have both courses so closeby.
I have a love/hate relationship with Summitpointe. I love the layout, I love the rates, I love the pace - however, I just can't get over the bullsh!t greens there. They are way too slanted, dry from the winds and hilly on the front nine. It severely effects my scores and rounds - then finally, my mood!! And I'm a decent putter...
I'll continue to play Summit, but if the greens were a touch more "fair," I'd be in love.
This course is hit and miss for me. I think that it's overpriced, but most courses in the bay area are overpriced.
service is meh. The condition is meh.
The layout is fun. Lots of doglegs, lots of blind shots...greens break really funky. Definitely local knowledge comes in handy here. You should shoot better here the 3rd or 4th time you play it.
it's on my rotation...you can get good deals on http://golfnow.com.
I could wait to get to a computer this morning to write about my experience at this mess of a golf course. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY playing Summitpointe. There are two courses in the Bay Area that I will never play again, this and The Ranch. Unless you are a scratch golfer who plays the course regularly you have no chance to score well. The greens and pin placements are ridiculous. You hit the ball from the fairway right at the stick only to get to the green and the ball has rolled 20-25ft away from the pin because of the slope of the greens. The fairways don' t reward good drives funnelling everything but the perfectly placed shot to the rough, putting is impossible because the ball breaks so much unless you know which "side" of the hole to place the ball and have the ability to do so. So many times I hit the ball well thinking that I'd be in good shape for birdie or par only to find that the ball has rolled away from the hole 20 or more feet. Ridiculous. Maybe if you play it once a week you can "learn" the nuances and score well, but just drop by to play? Be ready to be frustrated and score higher than usual. Skip it is my advice.
I just had my wedding ceremony and reception at summitpointe this past weekend and it was great. The golf course is a beautiful place to get married. Kassie the coordinator was great and very helpful she made sure everything happened as planned... it was a pleasure working with her. I also ordered food from here for my reception and all my guests loved it. Great place for a wedding.
I shot my best game here, I love this course. Its pretty cheap when you compare it to other hilly courses like it like the Ranch in the Evergreen area in San Jose. You get a golf cart when you pay your green fee so the price is not bad. It s a fun course.
This place is not for beginners, it is pretty difficult, so don't play here especially if you can't hit your irons right or if you have a bad attitude when you miss hit your shots. You will not have a good time here.
I did have a bad experience when I came here last time. They did not honor one of their free green fee coupons that I got at a golf expo. I complained to the manager and he really did not do anything but said that on some days (even though it was not listed on the coupon) they could not honor coupons. Yet I wrote to the corporate headquarters and the manager mailed me a new coupon that allowed me to play another round on them
I have played Summitpointe a few times and generally a good course.
The positive:
Great greens, very challenging, fun to read and putt
Decent fairways, very well kept
Good course pace, the marshalls do a great job of keeping things moving
Nice range and practice putting area
The negative:
The Proshop and cart staff - they act like they own the place rather than working for minimum wage. Absolute a$$holes.
The compulsory share a cart policy - the guy I played with the last time slowed me down as he drove 8 of his drives into the rough and we spent 4-5 min each time trying to find it. Seriously!
The fairways for some of the holes (7,9,8,14,15,17) are right on top of each other and it is easy to have more than a couple of balls in your fairway from guys who are not playing in your group :-)
Go during the week, when it is much cheaper - fair value for $35 (w/cart) but a tad expensive on the weekends ($66 w/cart).
This course is pretty OK. Even though the marshals may seam to overmanage the course, they're quiet cool and what they say makes sense. Sad thing is that not even marshals can prevents idiots from going on any course (well, that's another story).
Very nice bay views from most holes. The course itself is quiet challenging, fairways are narrow, and the variety of holes is great. When I went there in november 2008, fairways were pretty damaged, and greens were carotted.
This was an amazing golf course. Everything is in wonderful condition. They have nice golf carts, well groomed greens and fairways, and a good staff. We were the 2nd group to tee off for the day and the group before us decided they would leave as a 2 some and leave the rest of their group behind. It screwed things up for the day and the staff there was good about moving people around to keep up the pace of play. The only downfall is the people that golf at this course. The 2-some we got set up with were sooooo slow. I'm talking 4 practice swings upon approach on a PUTT!!! And then a really bad putt after that! Those guys, and anyone else for that matter, should know that the first couple tee times are for people who can play fast and set the pace of play for the rest of the day! That's the only reason I would not go back to this course, many of the people there playing look slow and too methodical which can really throw my game off if im losing my rhythm waiting for them and rushing my shot to make up for their slowness. The water hazards also stink which I thought was weird.
Played Summitpointe a couple of weeks back (date withheld for non-identification purposes ;) and it's definitely not for the beginning player. With a course rating of 70.1 and slope of 131 (from the *whites*), even average players are going to find this difficult. The course was in good shape, and some of the holes were moderately fair, but other holes were ridiculously difficult. Narrow sloped fairways, water, and crud to the left and right made 5 of the last 6 holes way harder than they should have been. Throw into the mix a ton of greens that were severely sloped so that even the slightest touch of a ball (if you were unfortunate enough to land above the hole) would roll 18+ feet.
The marshals were also way too pushy. Granted the players in my foursome aren't the best golfers in the world, but telling us to pick up the pace when the next group ahead of us is only 1/2 a hole ahead was a little much. Most of the time, though, they hover around you in their carts like vultures until you finish (almost more annoying). Didn't see a one of them on the back 9, though.
I still enjoyed my round (hey, a round of golf anywhere beats workin'), but don't plan to come back anytime soon - mostly because I need to get a lot better (10-15 hcp) to attempt to make the course playable. Rating of 2 only because of some of the ridiculous holes (and the marshals), rather than my poor round ;)
I've played here a few times over the years and it's 'OK'... A good place to practice your shots, you'll probably use most of your clubs. There are some blind uphill shots and a few blind shots into the green.
We had a lady ranger tell us to speed up on the tee box of the number 10 hole when we were just 1/2 a hole back. We were not even playing slow and there was no one behind us... 2 of our 4 some were in the restroom... She just waited there until we all teed off.... Get lost lady...
You pretty much need to have a cart at this place due to the hills. Spring valley is just down the road and is a full notch better/interesting. I will NOT be back and patronize this course ...
Tucked "in" the hills of Milpitas this course is only about a mile off I-680, straight up into the hills. Yes, hills, which mean a bit more challenging than say any flat city course. That is the course's main character and if you choose to play it, then accept the terrain, even if you lose balls and/or rack up your score.
I only play here during the weekdays so I never really experience a dense crowd. Since the course is a little challenging, the pace of play is a little slower (people taking more strokes), but I'm not one to complain about being "stuck" on a nice golf course. Believe me, there are a lot of other places that are less desirable, such as work or traffic. Am I wrong?
Played here this week, first time in a while b/c of a deal I found. Weekdays between 12-2:30 pm, a round with cart is $33 + lunch. Weekends, the same set up is $49. This is their August special, but must present coupon *clix dis* http://agc.nemexinc.co...
Sometimes golf is not all that cheap, and I've always thought to myself that especially if you pay say around $50 for a round that it should come with a simple lunch or a snack and a drink at the very least. Well here it is, my wish materializing. It's all that and a bag o chips.
It's a decent course but it can be a very tough track at times. If you have any tendency to slice the ball at all, the first hole will immediately put you in a bad mood as right is OB onto private property. The entire course has a lot of elevation changes and some strange sloping fairways opposite to the dogleg direction which can be irritating.
The website calls it "private club experience at a public golf value." Not true. It's nice, but it's not nearly that nice. If you truly want a private club experience but can't afford a country club, try Wente in Livermore or Cinnabar in San Jose.
Some of the holes are really squeezed in tight. They took a small, misshapen piece of land and put a golf course where they most likely shouldn't have. It's not as bad or as tough as the horrible Ranch at Silver Creek, but it will still frustrate even low index golfers.
If you miss a fairway even slightly, you will usually be in someone else's fairway. Problem is, there are an odd number of newer golfers here regardless of the difficult layout so you frequently see people in your fairway. Pay close attention to OB rules. Just because you can see your ball doesn't mean it's okay to play it as it lies.
Very difficult course to play...at any skill level.
The only flat piece of ground is the tee-off ;-). This is an excellent course to play to improve your entire game, including green reading. You need to be calm & relaxed; otherwise you will have a frustrating day.
I have played once (didn't lose any golf balls). Planning to play again in a couple of weeks.
Dude... This golf course is not for everybody, well maybe it is. if you want a great cardio workout, then play the front nines. I've play here a numbers of time and I can not break 80. "if you can play here, you can play anywhere." This course will teach you a lot about course's management and strategy for all your shots.
The staffs are pretty cool and friendly. The prices is not that bad compare to others course. cart is only $7, SEVEN DOLLAR!!!!! man... everywhere else is $24 and if you are a member (membership fee $50/yrs) you get a $20 range ball card and an hours early for twilight and super twilight rates. pretty good deal!!!
The course condition itself is pretty good and the green are tricky and from medium to fast speed. I like the layout of this course, for every shot you have to think very carefully of where you want your ball to land, it will reward you if you make good decision. If you don't make good decision I hope you have patient cuz it gonna be a long day for you. The Front nines is more challenging then the back nines, since it more hilly with downhill lies, uphill lies and sidehile lies you have to be able to hit the ball from different lies and the fairway is pretty narrow and you play against the wind on a couples of hole.
The back nines is a little more easier, because it flatter but the fairway is much narrower you have to pick your shot wisely. there are sand trap come into play almost every hole. Water hazard come into play on holes #2 you have to hit over a ravine, 7, 10, 11 and 14. Its a great course for you to try and learn hitting from different types of lies.
Majority of the time it NOT very crowded here so you can play and take your time to learn different types of shot. however, they have tournement here and it can be long day if you play behind them.
there is a Range about 25 stalls and a bunker to practice out from. They range us to be for all clubs, but now it just for irons. I guess someguy hit it too long on the range and hit a golfer on the first hole. I still see peoples hit their driver on the range. so "Irons only rules" is loosely enforce. There is a putting and chipping green and it similar to the green on course. well if you get out here, enjoy your round and good luck.
For 5 Saturday mornings, I trekked to Summitpointe for Nike Golf Learning Center (NGLC) lessons with the hyper, enthusiastic, and informative Kim Stevens. She keeps the class lively and entertaining! On our last day of golf on the course, she let us play as many holes as we wanted with wine toasting at each successful hole. She even let us play with our one arm club in case it took 2 more than par. By the eighth wine toast, I was right within par expectations!
I recommend this NGLC over other Bay Area GCs just because Kim is great and the 5 lesson deal edges out the other NGLC values. I scoped out NGLC at Tilden, which is decent but I prefer the youthful and fun vibe at Milpitas. And why else is it worth the one hour drive? Well, the sunshine of course. Who wants to golf in the friggin' cold fog and have stiff muscles that make for poor shots?
As if golf in general isn't frustrating enough, Summitpointe has the potential to take that frustration to another level. There are A LOT of elevation changes and severely sloped fairways.
The rates are very reasonable (which is a surprise for a golf course in the bay area). The course could be maintained a bit better: greens need a little help and the fairways are in need of some care. However, it's a pretty interesting course. It'll make you think out many shots before you hit, which I admire in a golf course. The staff is nice, and the landscape the course is set in is equally as nice. Summitpointe probably isn't the best course to play if you're new to the game.
i'd play summitpointe again, but it's not one of my favorites.
it's a bit far from san francisco, but i'm willing to travel a bit for reasonable green fees. it's decently maintained, but as the summer wears on, the yellow continues to expand and the ground gets harder. the first time i played here, about a month ago, the tees and greens were perfect - but last weekend it was a parking lot. bunkers were an impossibility. i'd say play here from april-june, and skip the rest of the summer.
highlight of the day - a family of goats grazing on the back nine. they completely trampled my line, but since there were 4 cute baby goats romping around with the male and his 2 concubines (ah, polygamy), i gave 'em a pass.
Ok wait a minute. here.. this course may be challenging because it is narrow and abundant with hills.. but thats about it in terms of interest.
Do not, absolutely at any cost, go to this course.. it sucks bigtime.. The grass is dry in many places and you could die in many areas. It is clear that the designers made this course to fit in a little condensed area that raps along a hill within a fancy shamcy residential area .. a gated community. A huge issue -that i have- is the fact that there are many Tee Boxes which are placed in direct line drives with other Tboxes.. and many instances where you have fair ways side by side where the guy is driving into your fairway and and you are driving into his... I say SAFETY FIRST.. and this place.. is stupid unsafe. People are yelling FORE!! at every direction. by the end of the course people just give up and not yell at all..
In addition, there are many beginners from the NGLC that hit this course.. so where do you think the ball will be when they hit...
I've been to way better courses.. this is one to go to at last resort, trust me.. its not worth getting hit by the ball...
This place almost made me want to move to the burbs. It's closer to the freeway than any home down in the South Bay.
Awesome looking course but it appears to be very difficult with all the hills. Luckily, I just practiced at the driving range which was nice but kinda small with a short field. Many small ponds you can aim for tho... or not aim for and still hit.
This is the poor man's version of The Ranch GC. The course conditions here are pretty decent and the greens in good shape the last time I was here. This course has many characteristics of The Ranch for example #2 is a long and hitting uphill, The 2nd par 3 you are on an elevated tee box hitting down towards the greens. A couple of blind tee shots, and water hazards make this course in my opinion the 2nd toughest course in bay area, with The Ranch taking the top spot. They have a nice putting station, but the range sucks because the balls are worn and you can't use your driver because if you slice you'll bean the folks on the 1st tee. Sumitepointe does a great job sending email specials to get budgeted golfs out more often. Oh yea, always take a golf cart. Its too hilly to walk it.
Very challenging well kept golf course in Milpitas. Lots of hills. I walked this course and I do not recommend doeing that again. The terrain is challenging and hilly. Fun course to play.
Bring your pack mule and perhaps a half dozen Sherpas. Lots of up and down climbing and hitting. Some beautiful holes, too, and it's quite challenging. I really enjoyed this golf course and you'll get lots of exercise if you walk it. They have a beer cart which is most welcome.
I only go there because it's cheap. Why is it cheap? Because you'll want to quite golf and take up bowling after you play the course. I lost 10 balls!! And I don't suck either. Very hard course. I would only play here if you have a local with you that can tell you exactly where to hit.
Tucked away in the hills of Milpitas California you'll find the illuminating greens of Summitpointe Golf Course. Many fellow golfers have grumbled over the sloping fairways and/or the glass-like greens, but who said this game was supposed to be easy? A beautiful course with lots of trees and water. Would have given this course a higher rating if the prices were a little lower. For over $50 I'd rather play Cinnabar Hills.
