I missed Summerwood on my last trip back from Santa Barbara, but this time we got a chance to check it out on the way down. I wish we had stayed another day, since my buddy told me Aaron Eckhardt made it to his local coffee shop (Mojo's in Goleta) and I would love to have told him how much I believe in Harvey Dent. ;-)
But I digress. We got to Summerwood after dark, say, about 5:30 or so, and it was a unique experience to stop at a winery after dusk. Summerwood was welcoming, though, and you can't go wrong in Paso. I had the Diosa and GSM, among others, and found them all outstanding. They're a little out of the price range at the moment, but one could easily treat themselves, given that the price of gas is so cheap, on a central coast tour, and buy one of their excellent Syrahs or blends.
Allow me to put a finer point on that last point: gas is cheap, folks, so there's never been a better time to do a little wine tasting tour a little farther afield than Napa. Hell, stay in a Motel 6 and spend what you save on fine wines . . .
extra credit if you can guess the Neil Diamond song I was singing under my breath as we were leaving . . . :-D

In all my experiences, I've never had a bad one in Paso Robles when it comes to wine.
I usually don't enjoy fees for tastings, but this one was worth it.
On our way to Santa Barbara as the sun was setting and the clock running out for our last tasting of the day, we noticed this winery right off 46 W. Joe and I have never been...tasting in the dark...so this was an experience.
The hosts were friendly and relaxed, it was the end of the day but we weren't rushed out or made to feel like the stragglers coming in for the final taste. They even recommended other places or wine bars in downtown Paso Robles for us to check out.
Their wines are a little out of my price range, but they were delectable nonetheless. We started with the viognier which was fantastic--I'm liking them more and more. Their chard is buttery, but their Sentio and Syrah were the best. I'd love to come back in the daylight and view the grounds and adjacent Inn.

I first saw Summerwood a year ago, when I went wine tasting in the West 46 area. When I saw it and tried there wines, I really wanted to stay there.
The Inn is beautiful, small rooms, with a lot of charm and beauty. In being so small, they have a wine social and gourmet appetizers, made by there private chef. We arrived late and the overnight inn keeper saved us a bottle, talked to us, and suggested a great restaurant.
The chef is wonderful. He is as good as any San Francisco chef. Instead of one breakfast choice, there are ten. They will make whatever you want, all included in the price of your room. The room is cheaper if you are a wine club member, so maybe a thought to join if you are going to stay there.
It is worth the price. They have a gourmet dinner on Saturday nights. As we ate elsewhere, the chef was nice enough to give us a wonderful soup, at no charge.
There is a great vibe and I would love to have a home in this area. As I don't, I will have to use Summerwood.
We visited this winery on a Saturday afternoon and Napa, watch out! Summerwood had excellent service, very little snobbery, and delicious wine. I had the premium tasting menu and, wow, was it worth it. And talk about a view. You walk out onto the back patio and overlook the rolling hills of vineyards.
We were the only people there when we stopped in which is refreshing after past experiences with the crowds in Napa/Sonoma.
Central California. Who knew it could be so great?

My girlfriend and I stayed the weekend here - friendly service and good food (from breakfast to appetizers, it was all good). The location is perfect, too, to explore the wineries of the west side of Paso Robles.
One piece of advise, though - avoid the Twilight Room. This room featured a bed with an overly-creaky frame - one which kept us up all night. They did accommodate us and move us into another room the next day (since there was one open), but didn't feel the need to compensate us for a lost night's sleep on the noisy bed frame. Quite frankly, I expected a lot more for the price as well.
Overall not a bad place to stay, but I'm going to try another place my next stay in the Paso Robles area.
We stayed here for an anniversary, and it was lovely. They have an incredible breakfast, and there is a wine and cheese hour in the late afternoon. The living room is very serene and elegant.
The room decorations are not really to our taste (being very traditional, with flowery wallpaper), but they were quiet, clean, comfortable and spacious.
Location is good for heading out to the wineries west of 101 Hwy. From here, you can be in Cambria in about half an hour, and then work your way back along the back roads. After a break and refreshments, you can head up to downtown Paso Robles for dinner.
I just came back from the Technical Tasting Seminar with Winemaker Chris Cameron today. What a great event! I definitely feel more educated about wine and the actual tastes that encompass what is in the wine as well as help me discern and break down what flavors I actually prefer in a wine. Edu-tainment at it's finest :) I can't wait to see what other events Summer Wood comes up with. Keep up the great work.
We are local Paso folks but stayed here for our anniversary in June. Really nice job. Everything was professionally done and the staff was great. Very relaxing and a great setting. Maybe one of the best places to stay in town. It's a bit bigger than a B and B, but I think that allows them to do things one step up. The food and wine reception is great! Nicely done.
Very nice winery in Paso Robles. It's the first winery off of 46 W. After getting lost in the hills and valleys off 46 E, we finally found our way to this winery and boy were we thirsty. The tasting fee is $5 for their regular selection and $10 for the reserve. BTW- they do not waive the tasting fee upon purchase. BOO! We loved their cabernets and bought a bottle to go with our dinner later that night. Our bottle was $34, add the tasting fee of $15, plus tax came out to almost $55. Gulp! Glad the wine was good but next time I'll just buy the wine and sit outside on their lovely patio.
BEAUTIFUL! and they have a WONDERFUL selection of Cabernet's. Check out the cute inn across the street as well!
this place is definitely a hidden gem, they have a very beautiful estate and friendly service and great wine. check them out if you are in paso.
