You know when you like a wine at 10:00 am, it is a good wine!

Lovely grounds and tasting room & retail area.  We did not go to the Inn.

Anyway, Jessica, our wine educator, was very helpful and was eager to talk to us & explain about all the grapes and the wines.  She has an Ag Eco (or Ag Business, I think?) degree from Cal Poly and she's working on further studies in the wine industry.  So it was fun to talk to her.

We ended up tasting 10 wines, and we joined their club.  Now ~~ you may not be impressed with this feat, however, I had made a deal with my hubby that I would not join a new club unless I drop one of our other clubs (to whom I am deeply devoted -- Corison, Duckhorn, Joseph Phelps, Sherwin, Scott Harvey & Kuleto).  So I had to drop Kuleto in order to join Summerwood.  If you've ever been to Kuleto's winery in Napa, you'll understand why we love to go there & the wine's not bad either.  Thus, joining Summerwood's club was not something we did lightly.

Back to Summerwood.  The whites, Diosa Blanc, Chardonnay & Viogneir, were each very nice.  The Diosa Blanc (a Viognier/Roussane blend) was our favorite.  The reds were all blends, except for the 100% Syrahs.  Each blend is just a bit different, with various varietals ~~ Cabernet, Merlot, Malbec, Petite Verdot, Cab Franc, Grenache, Syrah, and Mouvedre.  Ends up creating a nice portfolio of reds that are across the taste and body spectrum.  From a straight Bordeaux blend, and a true GSM to unusual Bordeaux/Rhone mixes.  All are worth a try.  I had a different favorite from my hubby, but there is something for every palate, assuming you like dry, bold reds overall.

We are pleased with our first club purchase & will be eager to go back as soon as we can swing another trip to the Paso area.

Stop #3 on the wine tasting tour with The Wine Wrangler

As our tour drove up, the grounds looked to be green - but over grown. Not a big deal though as we weren't there to stroll the grounds but to taste some wine.

The tasting room offered a great view of part of the inside of the winery - barrels and also a nice selection of merchandise ranging from foods to jewelry. I mention this because Anna found some inexpensive but very cool jewelry that she had to have.

The staff was busy - a few times I was poured the same wine twice which I didn't mind as samples I was poured weren't bad. A few groups had come in at the same time and a few of the staff seemed to lose composure a little until the crowd lessened.

Great big bold reds in a great setting. I peeked inside the bed and breakfast across the street and it looks amazing. Expensive, but amazing. Nice stop during a Paso wine tasting trip.

I missed Summerwood on my last trip back from Santa Barbara, but this time we got a chance to check it out on the way down.  I wish we had stayed another day, since my buddy told me Aaron Eckhardt made it to his local coffee shop (Mojo's in Goleta) and I would love to have told him how much I believe in Harvey Dent. ;-)

But I digress.  We got to Summerwood after dark, say, about 5:30 or so, and it was a unique experience to stop at a winery after dusk.  Summerwood was welcoming, though, and you can't go wrong in Paso.  I had the Diosa and GSM, among others, and found them all outstanding.  They're a little out of the price range at the moment, but one could easily treat themselves, given that the price of gas is so cheap, on a central coast tour, and buy one of their excellent Syrahs or blends.

Allow me to put a finer point on that last point: gas is cheap, folks, so there's never been a better time to do a little wine tasting tour a little farther afield than Napa.  Hell, stay in a Motel 6 and spend what you save on fine wines . . .

extra credit if you can guess the Neil Diamond song I was singing under my breath as we were leaving . . . :-D

Gorgeous, well-manicured grounds and a large, beautiful, lavishly furnished tasting room.  Plenty of wines for tasting for the money, and friendly accommodating tasting room staff.  In addition to a winery, Summerwood is apparently also an inn, and while we were there, we met a couple who apparently stay there every year and really enjoy it.  (There's apparently a gourmet breakfast every morning, and complementary wine, live music, and tasty snacks in the evenings.)

This is yet another winery where I'd say most of the wine was good, but not particularly standout (though we were fond enough of their zin port to take a few bottles with us).  Also, a lot of it was quite pricey (in the $50 - $100 range).  Maybe worth another stop, if there's nowhere else we really want to try to get to.

We visited this winery on a Saturday afternoon and Napa, watch out! Summerwood had excellent service, very little snobbery, and delicious wine. I had the premium tasting menu and, wow, was it worth it. And talk about a view. You walk out onto the back patio and overlook the rolling hills of vineyards.

We were the only people there when we stopped in which is refreshing after past experiences with the crowds in Napa/Sonoma.

Central California. Who knew it could be so great?

In all my experiences, I've never had a bad one in Paso Robles when it comes to wine.
I usually don't enjoy fees for tastings, but this one was worth it.
On our way to Santa Barbara as the sun was setting and the clock running out for our last tasting of the day, we noticed this winery right off 46 W. Joe and I have never been...tasting in the dark...so this was an experience.
The hosts were friendly and relaxed, it was the end of the day but we weren't rushed out or made to feel like the stragglers coming in for the final taste. They even recommended other places or wine bars in downtown Paso Robles for us to check out.

Their wines are a little out of my price range, but they were delectable nonetheless. We started with the viognier which was fantastic--I'm liking them more and more. Their chard is buttery, but their Sentio and Syrah were the best. I'd love to come back in the daylight and view the grounds and adjacent Inn.

We stopped by SummerWood Winery for a tasting on a Saturday afternoon. It was a cute little tasting bar with a nice patio/view of the vineyards. I wasn't impressed by their wines, but the PORT was delicious!

My girlfriend and I stayed the weekend here - friendly service and good food (from breakfast to appetizers, it was all good).  The location is perfect, too, to explore the wineries of the west side of Paso Robles.

One piece of advise, though - avoid the Twilight Room.  This room featured a bed with an overly-creaky frame - one which kept us up all night.  They did accommodate us and move us into another room the next day (since there was one open), but didn't feel the need to compensate us for a lost night's sleep on the noisy bed frame.  Quite frankly, I expected a lot more for the price as well.

Overall not a bad place to stay, but I'm going to try another place my next stay in the Paso Robles area.

We stayed here for an anniversary, and it was lovely.  They have an incredible breakfast, and there is a wine and cheese hour in the late afternoon.  The living room is very serene and elegant.

The room decorations are not really to our taste (being very traditional, with flowery wallpaper), but they were quiet, clean, comfortable and spacious.

Location is good for heading out to the wineries west of 101 Hwy.  From here, you can be in Cambria in about half an hour, and then work your way back along the back roads.  After a break and refreshments, you can head up to downtown Paso Robles for dinner.

I first saw Summerwood a year ago, when I went wine tasting in the West 46 area. When I saw it and tried there wines, I really wanted to stay there.

The Inn is beautiful, small rooms, with a lot of charm and beauty. In being so small, they have a wine social and gourmet appetizers, made by there private chef. We arrived late and the overnight inn keeper saved us a bottle, talked to us, and suggested a great restaurant.

The chef is wonderful. He is as good as any San Francisco chef. Instead of one breakfast choice, there are ten. They will make whatever you want, all included in the price of your room. The room is cheaper if you are a wine club member, so maybe a thought to join if you are going to stay there.

It is worth the price. They have a gourmet dinner on Saturday nights. As we ate elsewhere, the chef was nice enough to give us a wonderful soup, at no charge.

There is a great vibe and I would love to have a home in this area. As I don't, I will have to use Summerwood.

My very favorite Paso/SLO winery. The location is conveniently located on HW-46 just minutes west of HW-101. The grounds are wonderful to soak in the Paso Robles sun before or after your tasting. Since our stop at Summerwood has usually been preceded by a 3 hour drive it is nice to just walk a bit before entering the building. The tasting room is spacious and focused on the wine and items to enjoy with their wines - not a gift shop like some Napa wineries have developed into. The servers are very knowledgeable of the product and process so take your time and ask lots of questions - they will have answers. My favorites are the Sentio and Diosa Reds and my wife loves their Viognier. On our last visit we tasted the Private Reserve Syrah blend and bought two bottles.

Very nice winery in Paso Robles. It's the first winery off of 46 W. After getting lost in the hills and valleys off 46 E, we finally found our way to this winery and boy were we thirsty.  The tasting fee is $5 for their regular selection and $10 for the reserve. BTW- they do not waive the tasting fee upon purchase. BOO! We loved their cabernets and bought a bottle to go with our dinner later that night. Our bottle was $34, add the tasting fee of $15, plus tax came out to almost $55. Gulp! Glad the wine was good but next time I'll just buy the wine and sit outside on their lovely patio.

Do not become a member of this winery. My experience has not been plea sent at all. They put a 175$ charge through on my credit card a month ago but never sent the wine. In my many calls to locate the shipment, they explained that they were running behind because of a flyer or something. My last call to them was last week when they said the wine shipments were going to be sent out- another week and I still haven't received any wine. I do not want a 175$ shipment of wine that has been sitting on a delivery truck or warehouse somewhere getting skunked. When i sent a written request to cancel my membership they refused and are forcing me to receive two shipments before I'm eligible to cancel my membership!! they trap you into some kind of an agreement when you sign up at their winery during the wine tasting. I'm so disappointed in their customer service that is why i am giving this review to warn others not to commit to $350.00 of wine that you never get or if you ever do receive it, what kind of condition it will be in. It's all about the enjoyment of the flavor and if it's on a hot truck for a week it's not going to taste good.

I just came back from the Technical Tasting Seminar with Winemaker Chris Cameron today. What a great event! I definitely feel more educated about wine and the actual tastes that encompass what is in the wine as well as help me discern and break down what flavors I actually prefer in a wine. Edu-tainment at it's finest :) I can't wait to see what other events Summer Wood comes up with. Keep up the great work.

I thought the wines here were fantastic.  Their wines were all pretty good, but the 2005 Cab is about as perfect a cab as you'll find anywhere.  We had one for dinner, went back and bought two more to take home.  $38 a bottle.

It's the first tasting room to your right as you drive west from the 101 on the 46.  Cool set-up to the tasting room.  You get a large peek at the barrel room from the bar.  The wines were pretty good ($10 tasting) and bottles were not overpriced, however tasting wasn't waived if you buy.  Definitely worth a stop if your touring that wine region or if you want to break up your trans-cal drive.

We are local Paso folks but stayed here for our anniversary in June.  Really nice job.  Everything was professionally done and the staff was great.  Very relaxing and a great setting.  Maybe one of the best places to stay in town.  It's a bit bigger than a B and B, but I think that allows them to do things one step up.  The food and wine reception is great!  Nicely done.
