Okay fellas. Let me tell you what's up before you go.
Everything at this location is a medium. There are no smalls and there are no larges.
Noper.
The buyers for SG know what kind of man they want shoppin' around their shop and it's the medium male.
But how can I blame them? I love the lean, average body of a man that's 150 to 175 lbs. and between 5'8" and 5'10" in 32 inch pants.
MMhm.
I came here with my little brother this past spring to look for a vintage piece (he was born in 1990 and I'm waaay older) to wear to his prom. We found the magic item at the perfect price point.
If SG carried European smalls and extra smalls, I would shop here for myself. SG has a fantastic collection of unique and special items. -

Bitchy queens in the Castro? Surprise, surprise.
Clothes were decent, but workers were assholes. With the economy being what it is, you have to actually *try* and pretend to like the customers...a smile will go a long way.
I give this store another three months and then it will be shut down like the rest of 'em. -

Sui Generis is a Latin expression, meaning of its own kind, or unique in its characteristics. It's quite an appropriate name for this men's only vintage store in the Mastro (Mission/Castro).
Hours are a little funky, but you can really score some finds here. The selection isn't huge but it's choice, so it's sort of like having your own personal haberdasher filter, assuming you can find something that fits (I found most of their items leaned on the thinner side, time for the gym, Nish!). -

Reasons I dig this store so much:
1) ITS ONLY MENS VINTAGE. There aren't any other stores like this in the city.
2) They carry TONS of size small and medium pieces - I actually fit most of the stuff I try on.
3) Gabriel, one of the owners, is really sweet. He's always very helpful (and sexy, ha!). And he doesn't mark everything up the wa-zoo.
There are others, but that sums it up. Shop there, k? -

I love this place. Its small, cute and always has new things for me to try on. If they fit my 6 foot 2, 215 lb frame, I would give it the other star... the owners are wonderful as well.

I can honestly say Sui Geniris is the best men's vintage shop I've seen. Way better prices than NYC and better vetting than anywhere I've been on the West Coast.
Only down part is the serious lack of small sizes. -

Absolutely fab... Bambi scored on a great Gucci Vintage Floral Print shirt here today. Overall a great selection of vintage t-shirts, leather jackets and fedoras. Definitely a store to visit regularly for that great find.
Listed in: Shopping is good therapy....

Do you guys remember Verunica in the Duboce Triangle section of town? Well, they moved and to Hayes Valley to boot. That made me sad. When they moved, they got rid of all the men's apparel and stuck strictly to women's wear. Now that makes me mad. Since discovering Sui Generis, I now feel glad.
This place has the best selection of vintage men's wear north of LA. Seriously, the owners are also the buyers and they have fantastic taste, competitive prices and truly amazing inventory. I shouldn't be spreading the word because I want all the dud's for myself. But since I can't wear all the sizes offered, I guess I'll share this little SF secret with the rest of you. Ask for Gabriel, he's informative, knowledgeable and honest. He'll let you know if it looks good on you or not and when he gets to know your flavor, he'll steer you in the right direction. This is my first stop when grubbing for gear. -

I stop in here weekly to check out the newest vintage ... that sounds oxymoronic. If you're looking for vintage 3-piece suits, look no further. This place has a pretty big selection and are fairly priced. Just remember to get your new duds tailored.

Well, this place could have received five stars from me. As for a tiny boutique (which are always my favorite), this place packs in fantastic, trendy pieces. However, the customer service was so blah I don't know if I would go back. I know this sound pretentious, but if I'm shopping I'd rather have no one talk to me; or, rather them not get off my ass. I don't like gray areas. However, there was one guy, annoying as he was - actually was friendly and at least took the time to say hello and try out 'customer service'. However, the guy behind the counter, who apparently is named Gabriel (read an article in gloss once about the store) and is the shop owner, apparently pays attention to attractive guys - and this is not the first time I've heard of this. My friend and I grabbed some lunch next door and while waiting, I decided to check out the store as my friend waited for our food. Aside from the nice but bugging sales person, the owner continued to color on a picture with his highlighter as i browsed pieces in this store, in front of him I strolled a couple times (the store is only about 12x12) so he obviously knew I was there - yet decided to keep coloring, not looking up to acknowledge my presence. When I left the store, without the shirt I really wanted (this great baseball journey tee that was worn to perfection and sheer as can be), i felt as I always do about people like the counter guy, YOU ONLY WORK IN A SHOP (vintage mind you) - DROP THE ATTITUDE. So i left and my attractive blond friend said he also wanted to check the store out as well. When he returned I asked if the guy behind the counter acknowledged him, my friend replied, "oh yes, he was very friendly, asking me if I needed help to let him know." now how is it, that when I was the only one in the store I was not acknowledged by both sales people and my friend was? I worked at Fred Segal before, I've shopped many boutiques higher priced than this one and I never would buy anything from someone who doesn't acknowledge my presence. it's rude and not a great way to get your business some business. So next time, just say hi, it would get your business some cash it desperately needs to survive SF rent.
