Go here often. Cheap and good veggie sandwiches. Owners very friendly. Great pit stop for a bite to eat.

Blah. awful!
I am soooo so annoyed. How can a place call itself "Sugarcane SF" if they don't got sugarcane?!!??! I even questioned him jokingly, his response "we just chose a name."
I was jonesing for a drink to quench that dreaded thirst after a night of drinking, sugarcane juice seemed worthy of that. Scratch that. No honey tea tapioca drink either, scratch that. I know, I know, this ain't no Tapioca Express, but I was already there and I specifically made a drive out there! Nothing else seemed good, so I settled for 2 avocado smoothies. I love those nehow...but last minute I decided to switch one up to lychee (thank god) because it was AWFUL!!! It was flat, no taste but cream and milk of the ice cream and I don't even know if it had real avocado in it, I don't think so! I didn't even walk 1 block before I threw it away, what a waste of money! Water tastes better than that.
Lychee was palatable at least, but still very, very sweet. It wouldn't quench your first, only make it worst. I want my money bacck!!!! -

Sugarcane Sf is similar to the quickly's next door. it's a no frill, no decor eatery selling mitchell's ice cream, banh mi, sushi, maki rolls, soups, noodles, smoothies, spring rolls, rice plates, and udon.
sampling: california roll (2.50)
-sushi rice was warm. the roll consisted of avocado and imitation crab meat. the pink ginger provided was a tad sour.
-sushi rice didn't have that marinated taste.
-roll was filling but didn't have that "taste".
temaki:
-friendly, efficient service
-cheap eats. you get what you pay for. -

I was starving, wanted something easy and fast. Got the combination vietnamese sandwich. It was meh, it tasted ok but not much flavor and I don't think it even had pate.

Everything here is pretty cheap, especially the sushi. They've got a selection of hot entrees, sushi, sandwiches, and other snacks. They have an extensive menu of smoothies and other drinks. They serve Mitchell's ice cream and has all the good flavors. They also sell them by the half gallon for about $10. They sell bowl ramen for 2$.
Vietnamese sandwiches are about $3.50, which is cheap, but not cheap for a Vietnamese sandwich. The interior bread from the sandwich rolls is not taken out so all the filling gets pushed out and leaving no room for them to settle in and it looks filled without being too filled. Our sandwiches had way too much mayo in it. It didn't have enough pate, cilantro, or pickled carrots. There was only regular carrot and no white carrot, so that was disappointing as well. The Vietnamese drip coffee was not completely pressed. It was not pressed in the dripper at all, so the grinds just dripped out with the coffee, making a grimey coffee. Good thing though, it was strong and were given a small pot of extra water.
Best thing about this place is the nice man who works here. He's incredibly friendly. This place seems to be real popular with the kids around here. Plus, this place is great because it's right next to a 38 Geary bus stop so you can just hop on right after. -

I like to think im keen on finding good local food so whats my strategy? Follow a bunch of loud annoying Asian kids into this place!
1-Chicken terriyaki(sp?) plate is way better than you think it will be for under 6 bucks
2-They have tapioca drinks and food (quickly is next door and always empty wonder why)
3-As far as i can tell its a family owned business (woo-hoo!)
4-The owner (older Asian gentleman) is very polite and will help you make a decision without feeling rushed
5-He will make most plate's spicy with the perfect balance (not too hot as to taste nothing)
And my last most favorite detail is!!!-- Professionalism!!! I instinctively bowed to the owner to thank him for my pick up meal tonight and he bowed back instantaneously much lower than i did! i know this is common in the east but im just some scraggly long haired white dude and didn't expect him to be so customary!
Props to sugarcane! -

The Quickly's next door was closed and I had a hankering for a boba. Sugarcane SF offers smoothies w/ boba so I figured I'd give it a shot.
I ordered the lychee smoothie w/ boba. I believe it was like $3 and some change. The wait was pretty hefty for my drink. I swear it took more than 10 minutes. Idk what the holdup was. This was at like 9pm and the place was pretty empty at the time.
The smoothie was good although it was a lot creamier than what I'm used to. I'm still a fan of the lychee jelly from The Sweet House. Also, the boba balls were kind of weird. It had a thick outer layer. Is it supposed to be like that?
PS. They only accept cash! -

Loveee this cute little restaurant!
I moved back to CA about 2 months ago and this is by far, the healthiest, most delicious Vietnamese sandwich I've had in the Bay Area. I've been exploring my SF 'hood trying to find the same tofu sandwich I devoured back in MN at Lu's on Eat Street. I was even looking down south in San Jose but couldn't find a thinly sliced tofu. It's always like this ground tofu mixed with other stuff which I didn't like.
Sugarcane is definitely doing something right here. I almost wanna try everything in their menu except that I've been trying to keep a vegetarian diet, which I'm finding very hard to do here. SO, I just have to keep my eyes/ears open and search for the right type of restaurants that will meet my vegetarian needs. Going back to this restaurant, the couple that were there this evening were truly welcoming and accommodating.
I ordered the veggie chicken sandwich and thai iced tea. The bread, as one mentioned in Yelp, was toasted to perfection. This is something I am particularly picky with. At least to me, the bread texture is the true indication of whether I will love or dislike the sandwich! Do you agree? Got myself one scoop of Mitchell's green tea ice cream for desert, all for a total of $9.45.
Anyhoo, 5 stars because I'm completely sold. I'm looking forward to going back maybe this week and most def. next week to explore other dishes in their menu.Listed in: Desserts in the Bay Area!!!!!

Delicious sandwiches, sushi, potstickers, milk tea...I usually splurge on lunch and late night snacks here :)
Everything is really reasonably priced, too!
I tried one thing about a year and a half ago that I didn't find to be amazing but that's it.
All they need now is takoyaki and I'll be there everyday! -

This block has several cheap food options (Quickly, Happy Yogurt, Sugarcane), probably to attract the Washington High School kids. Sugarcane offers sushi, Mitchells Ice Cream, spring rolls, tea eggs (60 cents each, the place smells like tea eggs), smoothies, noodle soup, 6 kinds of banh mi and milk tea with boba.
* Fancy pork banh mi ($3.25): a big chewy toasted white roll with 2 thick slices of pork loaf, a sweet teriyaki like sauce, mayo, pickled carrots, cucumber, cilantro and jalapeños. They skimped on the meat and the pork loaf was weird, almost like it was vegetarian/faux meat. They skimped on the veggies too. I wonder why they added sweet teriyaki sauce. I didn't like that at all. But the roll was decent and toasted nicely.
* Milk tea with pearls: The pearls were firm and chewy. The tea was overly sweet and tasted somewhat off/funny. It didn't have much tea flavor.
The setting is no frills but they do have a flatscreen tv and I like the fake plastic sushi. It's run by a nice family, so I do feel bad about giving them two stars.
Cash only.Listed in: Ode to banh mi (Bay Area)

This is a nice little neighborhood eatery. they have an number of asian foods from vietnamese to japanese
me and my friend ate here for lunch because the pizza place next to it was closed at 1pm
i got the unagu $8.50 i think worth it! unagi with rice and broccoli very filling. you get 3 large pieces of unagi smothered in sauce which is very tasty and the rice is nice and soft. it was piping hot when the owner served it to me
my friend got a banh mi not too much meat in the pork sandwich but a lot of veggies, but it was very cheap like 2 something i beleive
she also got a mango tapioca drink which was 2.5 or 2.75 it tasted like mango pudding which i liked lol but if you don't like that don't get it they have a lot of other flavors too
i noticed a picture near the register that showed they had pho to i asked about it, they only make it when they have the ingredients.
the place was pretty empty at the time we went there were only 2 other girls in there, it started raining outside so we just sat there for sometime chatting and eating. you do not feel rushed when you are there and the service is very good.
it's a good place to get something to eat cause its right on the 38 muni bus stop and there are large windows to stare out of to see if your bus is coming -

What a great find! I prefer a vegetarian diet, and their barbecue vegetable "pork" sandwich hit the spot so well for me. I love the variety of their menu, and the smoothies are fantastic.

This place was a one minute walk from my old apartment so my empty refrigerator often led me to Sugarcane SF's Veggie Pork Vietnamese Sandwiches. Having grown up on San Jose banh mi, I wouldn't call it super authentic but it's a tasty option for a part-time vegetarian like myself. My favorite part is the fresh french roll it's made with. Crunchy on the outside, soft and doughy on the inside. (I feel like every banh mi joint I've been to in SF has borderline stale bread)
When I wasn't being frugal, I'd order the udon noodle with chicken plate, tea egg on the side. Tasty and filling. Love the family that runs this place. The service is always friendly and if the wait is ever longer than a few minutes, I just stared at the Mitchell's Ice Cream flavors and fantasized. -

The banh mi is passable, but you can definitely find much better for cheaper elsewhere. The service is pretty good, but the subpar food and drinks definitely outweigh the service. The last time I went to Sugarcane SF, my iced milk tea had weird chunks floating around in the liquid. Gross.

I think this is more of a snack place than a lunch place, but I needed a quick lunch one Sunday and I had serious hankering for Vietnamese sandwiches. The small window of time meant I didn't have time to drive all the way to Clement and 6th Ave where there are a few Vietnamese cafes and spend 20 mins looking for parking. So voila! I found Sugarcane on Yelp and gave it a try.
The Viet sandwiches were good. I got a fancy pork and a combo. I know it's not exactly "authentic" like those aformentioned cafes, but hey the bread was crunchy and the pate was yummy. Satisfied my craving. Cheap too. And parking was...easier than Clement.
Only one guy (the owner?) was making all my food so the wait was a little slow for sandwiches. Not too bad though. Minus the one star b/c the smoothies were just ok. I saw fresh strawberries in the blender, but I think the "mango" in my mangoberry smoothie was just mango syrup. It tasted a little artificial.
I'd come here again. Next time I want some Mitchell's ice cream....Listed in: Outer Richmond eats

I used to live right around the corner from this spot and would come ever so often, since the day it opened. At first the food was passable, but it got consistently better over the months.
Their vietnamese sandwiches are pretty good, although I've been spoiled by the now super famous Saigon Sandwiches in the TL. However, I do enjoy how at Sugarcane they include slices of cucumber in with the sandwich. You have to make sure you ask for jalapeños though, because there's been numerous (annoying) times when I took a bite of my sandwich only to find my favorite part was missing.
They have Mitchell's ice cream which is a huge plus and they have a good selection as well.
Try their fruit smoothies because they are delicious! Made with fresh fruit and ice cream. My favorite is the strawberry banana or mango.
The vermicelli bowl, pho, and beef soup are weak. I'd pass.
Service is really great and everyone is super nice. I love family-owned businesses and try to support them as best I can, so coming here for only a couple food items didn't matter so much. I'll keep coming back if I'm in the area! -

We came to this location after our original choice, a local crepe cafe, ended up being closed. Much to our surprise, we were very pleased with this place.
We ventured in mostly looking for a dessert option, and were mesmerized by the interesting selection of ice cream. After our server generously provided some samples to help our determination process, we settled on a Oreo Mint Chocolate Chip and another scoop with Mocha Kahlua. Both were good, but the Mocha Kahlua was fantastic and something we would be willing to try again.
All in all, we were impressed. It was a great old fashioned little place with nice service and food. A location we wouldn't mind venturing back to someday. -

I can feel it. Sugarcane is soon to be one of my favorite spots for a low-key, no frills meal, with a quiet environment. For one, I'm tired of a typical cafe type of setting, so this spot here offered a great non-conventional environment for me to study.
I looked around the general Outer Richmond district area at potential spots for me to lay-low. Noticed a busy cafe right across the street from Sugarcane...erm....NOPE, looked to commercial cafe-ish. So I settled on Sugarcane for it's simple fact that it looked extremely quiet.
Sugarcane is a great little family-operated shop. I was quickly greeted by a nice gentleman who gave me the menu, asked if I was ordering for here or to-go, and offered me to have a seat if I wanted.
I realized that he was actually the owner as I noticed that he had his young son sitting in front of the flat screen TV watching afternoon cartoons. Cute kid.
Anyhow, after a quick scan on the menu, and after remember that my dear buddy David B. loves the Vietnamese sandwiches here, I knew that was to be my choice. I ordered the Fancy Pork Banh Mi for $3.25.
They also have an extensive menu of Mixed Fruit Smoothies as well. Having the name of "Sugarcane" I just had to have somethign nice and sweet, so I ordered myself a Banana Mango Smoothie.
My smoothie arrived in good time, and was sooo refreshing and delish that I was torn between drinking it all up in one big gulp, or savoring it and risking that it start to melt on me. The smoothie was very creamy and smooth, and had the best balance of both banana flavor and mango flavor that I've ever tasted.

Banh mi was also delicious. French roll was toasted perfectly on the outside with an awesome crunch, and the white insides were extremely fluffy. Couldn't have asked for better toasted bread for a V-Sandwich. My only thoughts on the bread is that it was a bit too bready.
I also appreciated that the man asked me of I would like jalapenos in my sandwich...I told him just a little, and it was perfect. There was a good variety and balance of veggies. I just wish I had more meat in my sandwich as it was quite bready on the outside. But overall, loved my sandwich.

I thought it was very cute that the man asked his little son to help him in the kitchen, and told him to turn off the TV since he knew that I was attempting to study.
Menu options range from Sandwiches, to Rice Plates, Noodles and Sushi Rolls as well. Nothing on the menu is over 8 bucks. Cash only though.
My total came out to $6.75. Best way to spend 8 bucks with tip. My smoothie was huge and tasted good, and the sandwich was satisfying. Couldn't have asked for a better way to spend an hour of studying in a non-cafe environment.
I will definitely return!Listed in: Desserts, Pastries, Ice…

I came here for sushi today and was pleasantly surprised. It tasted like the bomb sushi we have in Hawaii!
I got the miso soup which was nice and salty with plenty of miso paste, tofu and wakame. I also got a bowl of rice with this and the New York roll which was shirmp tempura and avocado and all for $10!! yummmmy! The roll was really neat and the sushi rice had just enough vinegar and sugar. It also came with wasabi and ginger.
The owner, who was really nice and friendly made all of the rolls by himself, which was about 9, and really fast!
They also have smoothies, ice cream, sandwiches, and a bunch of other goodies! -
Review from David B.
Let me start by saying this. I LOVE VIETNAMESE SANDWICHES!! There, I said it. I feel better.
I had already eaten dinner less than an hour before but was exploring this section of Geary when I saw the pictures in the window of this small shop. I haven't had a good sandwich in a while. At least since I was in San Jose last. I crave these sandwiches.
Their menu selection was pretty extensive overall. I chose the Special Combination Sandwich ($3.25) on a warm French baguette. Pork, fresh greens, jalapeno, sliced carrots, light spread of mayonaise and some other special ingredients I couldn't quite figure out. Doesn't matter, it was gone in less than 3 minutes. All of it.
The restaurant is very comfortable with some seating by the window which allows you to look out and do some people watching. Very clean also I might add!
I talked to the counter girl who was so helpful and in good spirits. She seemed very proud of their offerings and more than helpful in letting me select something while answering questions about the ingredients. I even asked her if they had a Fried Egg sandwich and she said without hesitation " its not on the menu but, we can make it". I like that attitude!
It is businesses with positive outlooks and simple friendliness that will keep me coming back.
Gotta love the Outer Richmond!!! -
Review from Helene K.
I do believe Sugarcane SF is under new ownership since, when I walked by a few weeks ago, I saw them cleaning up the place a bit. The sign outside is different looking from before, and I noticed a "GRAND OPENING" sign hung up this weekend. I wondered if I was seeing things since I knew I had seen the place open for quite some time before.
Well, my suspicions were confirmed when I went in today to investigate; the ownership must have changed from Vietnamese-Chinese to mainland Chinese since the menu items are now listed simply in English (no Vietnamese names anymore), and there are Chinese characters penned on the glass windows now.
More or less, though, the menu items have stayed the same; there are fewer noodle and rice selections, and they now include homemade potstickers and sushi maki (pseudo sushi anyone?). They are highlighting the Banh Mi/Vietnamese sandwiches more with their red signs on the door/windows and moving the sandwiches to the top of their menu instead of on the back side (the previous one had the Banh Mi on the back of the menu). No more green tea slushies, but the fresh fruit smoothies have stayed thankfully. Prices have stayed the same as well, so the sandwiches still cost $3.25 and the smoothies $2.75. Add $0.50 for tapioca. Ice cream is still served as well, and they're from Mitchell's.
There are some foods on display in front: spring rolls, some baos, tea eggs (in a red crockpot), some mochi cakes (more on this later), individually wrapped muffins, and plenty of instant noodles for sale. The place was blaring with a basketball game on the flatscreen, which I found a little distracting, but it seemed like business was slow today.
It seems I only come to Sugarcane SF on foggy days. Today I only went for a small sweet stop: I ordered a passionfruit smoothie with tapioca and felt intrigued by the mochi cakes on display. They are three small pieces of egg-custard/mochi-like cakes for $2.00. Total for the order: $5.25.
I watched the kind, middle-aged man make my smoothie and discovered the secret behind such a creamy smoothie: a scoop of ice cream! The passionfruit was smooth all right, a little icy probably due to the ice cream. The boba was hard to slurp up, and I wonder if the boba had been pre-frozen before or if they had become frozen from the ice/ice cream in the mixture. Still, I liked the smooth, fresh consistency of the drink itself.
The mochi cakes, as mentioned before, were three small pieces of egg-custard/mochi-like cakes with some sugary powder on top. I think the reason why they called them "mochi" cakes was due to the chewy texture; however, the taste reminded me of egg custards. Maybe not worth $2.00, but it was a small enjoyable treat.
What I really like about Sugarcane SF, regardless of ownership, is how they really don't mind people hanging out for a little bit, reading, people-watching, etc. In fact, I'm sure they encourage the whole "chill out" atmosphere with their plentiful displays of convenience foods (listed above) and their relatively inexpensive entrees (the most "expensive" is $6.25). I believe they're also advertising a huge sushi tray for $26.99, although I'm not sure if that's just a grand opening special or not. I'm not sure of the Banh Mi quality or the quality of their other foods, but I sure do love that the new owners are still staying true to fresh fruit smoothies.
So I stayed around at Sugarcane SF for a little bit to catch up on reading. I much prefer this atmosphere (despite the loud basketball game on TV) over a cafe; even though Sugarcane SF is located right on Geary & 33rd, it's kind of like a quiet haven away from the other aspects of the city.
Hours are 9:30am-09:30pm daily now. Cash only.Listed in: Best of the Best, Up & Down on Geary, From My Southeastern Asian…

CASH ONLY!!!!!!!!! OKAY!!!!!
So this place is kind-of ghetto, but there's a homey feel and it seems clean. They sell lots of stuff, from candy to Vietnamese sandwiches, to bags of chips and sushi platters. Oh, and Mitchell's ice cream!
I got a combo Vietnamese sando and the bread was nice and toasty. It was also light and crunchy juuuuuuuust the way I likes. The bread was definitely fresh, and the flavorful pork slices were thicker than I've had at other viet sando places. There was just the right amount of veggies (not STUFFED with carrots like the shops in TL do), and it was a decent size.
The guy who was running the place, I imagined to be the owner, was really nice and I could tell he cares about the business and the customers. He made the sandwich himself, and because I also ordered two other sandwiches, it was a bit of a wait.
Well worthwhile though.
Will be back again, with more cash. -

OMG this place is amazing! Thier food is soooooooooooooooooo good. I stopped in today for a coffee while waiting on the ever late 38 Geary. The man that greeted me was very friendly and I knew right off the bat that this place was so worth my $.
I got my coffee and was out the door, I sucked it down in like 2min LOL. No joke. It was damn good!
So just a bit ago I was like starving, and decided to order from there for pick up. I got the Viet-Chicken sandwich and I was not really a fan of teriyaki (which I told the guy, I think he is the owner) and he said he would make it special for me without any sauce or chicken which was cooked with teriyaki sauce. I also got the curry chicken (with veggies) and rice and ANOTHER coffee...lol
This is honestly THE BEST Vietnamese sandwich I have had in over 6yrs! It was done perfect. The curry chicken is killer too! I am so happy I stopped in for coffee today, because I think I just found my next fav. spot in SF. I even called the guy and let him know I really enjoyed it and thanked him for making it special for me; he was pleased and that made me happy :0)
Oh and they also have yummy treats (like Mochi) which I am sure I will have more of in the near future.
Only downside= CASH ONLY - But I would make a trip to the ATM just for Sugarcane!Listed in: Top Locations

Wow, what a place. I am very picky when it comes to my regular food stops, and there are only a few. Sugarcane SF has wowed me with stellar service, a great menu, an inviting atmosphere, and a family oriented business practice. When i first walked into this place i was greeted with a huge smile and a caring family. I was asked to please sit down and offered a drink. I was surprised at the quick and courteous manner of their greeting, and refreshed.
On this particular visit I ordered some sandwiches to go and did not get the full dine in experience. What I did get was the explosive flavor of their sandwiches which I am happy to say is a weekly must for me now. The owner carefully prepared my meal and took his time, asking me if I would like it spicy or not, and really made a fantastic sandwich. I have had Vietnamese sandwiches all over San Francisco and this was the best! The bread was toasted to perfection and the ratio of meat, sauce, and veggies was perfect.
On my next visit I was ready to try what the owner described as his daughters favorite :). It was the Udon Pasta Noodles, now I have had Udon soup and noodles regularly my entire life and was surprised still at how Sugarcane SF prepared them. They were delicious juicy and full of meat and veggies. The service I received was fantastic and dining there was even better than Id expected. I have gone many times since and have had nothing but the best experiences every time. Being able to eat a great meal with alot of variety and then finishing it with Mitchell's Ice Cream? Come on, you give me better!
I would like to thank Sugarcane SF for bringing back a sense of ownership, personality, family, care, and pride back to the small business world. I highly recommend this place for people on the run that want something great, delicious, and fairly priced or for people that want to kick up their shoes and enjoy a great dine in experience. -

I like their spring rolls, and I talked to the owner their food is made fresh everyday and on the plus, the peanut sauce for their spring rolls are not made with peanut butter but with grinded up peanut. It's like Vietnam all over again but cleaner and better with ice cream which i love. And on the plus, i like the setting. :D
the owner worked at a lot of fancy Vietnamese restaurants before this, like the one at the ferry building and another on folsom, I saw her photo in the magazine. :D -

The first time I was down here I was in pain, my tooth was hurting horribly~
So my lady and I saw this place and came in to buy a smoothie to help ease the pain, a Mango smoothie. This smoothie hit the spot, it wasnt all watery like some places, very nice um icy/creamy texture..and it didnt melt really fast either..some places have their mango smoothies melt so fast that all your left with is cold mango juice/water...
Anyhow, decided to come back again since I knew they wouldn't fail me on their mango smoothie and sure enough I was right. Now I havent really had anything else of theirs but I do know their Mango Smoothie is one the best that I've tasted so far...
The girls behind the counter are also very very nice~ -

I'm not sure if most people know it, but the management at Sugar Cane has changed from my last review. But I can safely say that the quality has not been changed at all.
I am a regular that goes there so much that the owner can easily recognize me and expect me to be there at least once a week, if my schedule's not that full.
Upon arriving, I am always greeted by the boss, who is a man that is smiling all the time and very kind. There are also many nice people who work there who are most likely his relatives of some sort.
The menu is actually quite inexpensive and most likely targeting young people. Since Quickly's is right next door, the competition is a little tough, but I definitely would choose Sugar Cane over Quickly's fast food any day.
My favorite is always the Vietnamese Sandwiches which are $3.50 each. It's always made fresh so it's nice and warm! My favorite is the combination because of the variety of meat. Occasionally, I tend to switch it up and order the California Rolls, which are $2.50 for six pieces.
I would definitely recommend this place because of it's cheap eats and great customer service!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Disclaimer: My brother's girlfriend's family owns and runs Sugarcane SF. That said, I would still come here if I didn't know the Chins. Sure, they are a sweet, adorable family but they can cook!
They prepare things as if they were cooking for their own family and that just feels nice. They also serve Mitchell's ice cream without the hour long wait.
I especially love the chicken Vietnamese sandwich. The bread is perfectly chewy and slightly crispy on the outside, the chicken is moist and the combination just works.Listed in: Value Dining

After running Bay To Breakers pretty much anything would have tasted delicious. I spotted this place while waiting for my 38 Geary home, and aside from my raging hunger, there were a few things I liked no matter what the day:
- Veggie chicken on the menu. Never had a vietnamese sandwich made this way. I will absolutely do it again.
- The guy working the counter (owner?) had his ten or so year old son working the register. I'm don't usually find kids adorable, but I couldn't help but smile when out of nowhere this quiet voice asked for my $3.50. You got it kid.
I hope this place makes it.

So what's a non-fan of Vietnamese food doing at a Vietnamese joint? Good question. It all started when I went for one of my irregular jogs on the Coastal Trail. Since I was in the neighborhood, I thought I'd stop by the Quickly off of Geary and 33rd for some cheap milk tea when I noticed Sugarcane SF next door. The name was enticing enough and with the promise of Mitchell's ice cream just beyond the door, I thought "Why the hell not?". So I came for ice cream, but would definitely come back for the food.
I really don't like Vietnamese food though. I've tried Pho more than once, got sick off of spring rolls, and am not at all liking Vietnamese sandwiches. However, while waiting for my ice cream to be scooped and my drink to be made (yea, I went with their milk tea instead of Quickly's) the management offered me a sample of a non-shrimp (pork?) spring roll. It was covered in some bomb-ass peanut sauce which all-in-all made for a really good, fresh treat. Definitely not like my gag-inducing spring rolls of the past.
Getting to the neighborhood is kind of a stretch for me but with an assortment of Mitchell's ice cream, boba drinks that give Quickly a run for their money, Vietnamese food (or at least spring rolls) that I actually like, and super-nice management, I might just make my trek across the city for them. -

Prices were great and food was decent. I had the beef stew with bread ($6.25) which was a bit too sweet for me, but I wished I ordered the imperial rolls over dry vermicelli noodles ($5.50).
Just happy there is another restaurant option in the Outer Richmond area. -

This place borders on ok because it's relatively clean inside and the food's not bad. For $3.25 you can get a filling sandwich (even Saigon has raised their prices to $3) - I've had both the terriyaki chicken and the fancy pork banh mi. They're both pretty good, although not as good as the ones at Saigon.
Now, my peeve with this place? I like to support mom and pop joints, but it's really difficult when the people working the counter can't communicate with the customers. The two ladies behind the counter couldn't seem to understand my order despite the fact that I repeated myself and even pointed and used hand gestures.
Then some poor kid comes in for her lunch break and orders a strawbery smoothie.
Kid: "Strawberry smoothie please."
Lady: "Huh?"
Kid: "I want a strawberry smoothie."
Lady: "Cran...berry?"
Kid: "STRAWBERRY!"
The ladies are nice even if they can't take your order correctly. I'd go back, but will be prepared to spend a little extra time when placing my order. -

I recently walked by to see a change in ownership and decided if I was in the area, I'd come and stop by. I came in on a nice hot day and wanted something light and cool. I noticed they serve Vietnamese sandwiches, which aren't too saturated in the area. I'm a sucker for good sandwiches, so I went ahead and ordered one. They had a really great grapefruit salad which didn't look like much at all. Grapefruit supremes with shredded red cabbage, jicama, carrots, candied pecans, which was paired with what i think was a soy / fish sauce vinaigrette and some minced herbs. It was quite tasty and indeed something that was perfect for the summer heat.
The sandwiches were big, and tasty. I had ordered the combo sandwich, which was filled with an assortment of pork products, pickled carrots, onions, cucumber and a few slices of jalepeno served on a nice crusty French roll. Great Cheap Bite!
The ladies were nice and informative. The menu, rather limited but enough to get things underway, was armed with Ice Cream, to assortment of cold/hot drinks, and Vietnamese food. So far, flavors were very good, the establishment clean, and the products were fresh. Prices are somewhat reasonable and I hope to come back again. We'll see what identity this establishment turns to, either a dessert shop cafe or Vietnamese restaurant. Wherever it turns, I'm just glad to see another great sandwich shop. -

I went there the other day with a friend who lives near this restaurant/ie cream shop.
My friend ordered fried roll (rice paper) and I ordered pho. The rolls were good. I like deep fried rice paper rolls that you can't find often...
To my regret, their noodle soup wasn't very good. The soup doesn't have much flavor and it took a long time to prepare for it. I just suppose noodle dish isn't their best dish.
People working there were very cheerful and nice. They even gave us flans. They looked really yummy but we didn't like the flans because they were not sweet enough.
As others mentioned, their spring rolls and sandwiches are what we should order there. We didn't try them, so will try them next time.
I gave only 3 starts (actually I'd rather give 2 stars for food, but I'd say 3 stars due to their good service and nie people wroking there). -

I had only been here to eat ice-cream and had always said one day I will get some food here. I got a Vietnamese sandwich that was about $4 and it was pretty filling. It was okay and for the price I will probably order it again. I went back a second time and got their pork and rice plate with a fresh squeezed lemonade. The lemonade was perfect. The service was good. The people working there are very friendly.
I suggest going to this place to grab a quick bite and definitely get an ice-cream. -

Cute name, huh? I found this place through my iphone's Yelp app (OMG, I love my phone!) My fiance and I spent the first part of our day with our wedding photographer, Natalie and her assistant, Wing, and we were running out of fuel. Sugarcane was well reviewed and a few minutes away from where we were shooting at. We seated ourselves and ordered cheeseburgers and Vietnamese sandwiches, which was something I was craving. The service was slow, but friendly and accomodating. The food came. The cheeseburgers looked weak. I mean that in the sense that it was something I could have made at home. I asked Natalie and my fiance Julius how they tasted and they just kinda did the "alright" nod. My food comes and the sandwich looks great. The bread was very fluffy on the inside, but there was too much bread. The grilled teriyaki chicken that was the filler was ok as well. They didn't put enough vegetables in my sandwich and I was hoping for more oomph, juice and jalepeno. I was slightly disappointed. I tried Julius' Thai tea. Bland as hell. Whoever gave thsi place four stars must not get out much cause damn. Mediocre. I'd only come back to get ice cream, not the boba drinks. If their Thai iced tea was bland, imagine if I ordered a drink with tapioca. I'm cool off that.
And oh yeah... Cash only, baby. Good thing Julius was paying.
