This is the best cupcake in NYC period, and im not even a desert kinda guy. I usually grab them to go because the seating area consist of a loveseat and like 3 chairs, and is almost always occupied.
My favs are the vanilla, red velvet and pistachio. The cupcakes are moist and delicious and the frosting is sweet, but not too sweet, just right. The butter cream is so smooth and creamy, and they don't skimp out on the frosting!
If your out and about in the LES, i definitely recommend stopping by and seeing what all the fuss is about.
The truth of the matter is, I'm not really a "cupcake person." If having a hankering for something sweet, I would never turn to a cupcake. But a box of cupcakes makes a nice little gift for the friend who has everything. So I picked up a dozen pistachio cupcakes.
At the party, these nutty little cakes had to compete with a chocolate mousse layer cake from Something Sweet (1st Ave and 11th Street - a wonderful, tiny, no nonsense neighborhood bakery). The pistachio cupcakes, well, took the cake.
Everyone raved.
P.S. I encountered no rudeness or impatience whatsoever from either of the ladies working the counter at SugarSweetSunshine... And that Banana Pudding looks scrumdiddlyumptious.
Really? "Sugar," "Sweet," and "Sunshine" all in one title, it's just so damn cutsie...which of course prompts me to sing (and yes I am remembering this word for word):
I think I'll go for a walk outside now
The sunshine's callin my name
I hear it now
I just can't stay inside all day,
I gotta go out get me some of those ra-a-a-ays
Everybody's smiling
- Sunshine Day
Everybody's laughin
- Sunshine day
Everybody sings so happy toda-a-a-ay
It's a sunshine day!
Back to biznatch...the first time I visited this establishment I ordered a pistachio cupcake and a red velvet cupcake.
Now hear me people, if you don't put the correct frosting on a red velvet cupcake, it. is. not. a. red. velvet. cupcake! The red velvet at this bakery is donned with what they like to call "mousse" which is a whipped butter cream, um, guh ross. BUT, hold up wait up mr. lover, the cupcake (sans frosting) was delicious, moist, very flavorful, with a bit of a crunchy top. The pistachio had the same ridic icing, which doesn't work on this cupcake either. BUT, again the cake was delish. The pistachio flavor was absolutely spot on, again moist, flavorful, very fresh. Just don't put any icing on it and it will be perfect.
Now y'all, I came back here with a friend who digs their cupcakes, so I figured I would try something different.
I got the banana pudding...um...okay...wow. It took this review from a wobbly three to a solid four stars. First off, it's totes cheap $4.00 for 12 oz. It's so rich, creamy, and filled with bananas. This is another thing I can't stop thinking about, especially when I see that I've mysteriously grown love handles?? I'm jonesin' for some more puddin' I will be back for the puddin' -- me want more puddin'.

Red Velvet Cupcake: these are the only three words that will ever matter following my first visit to Sugar Sweet Sunshine. The cake is so fluffy and not at all dry (ahem, Magnolia). There is a divine seating area and a fun-loving clientele (who frequently bring their pups in-shop). I can't recommend this place enough. Just a few blocks away from some of my favorite eateries (Perbacco, Max!). A must visit!

That's why you gave them 5 stars, cause you haven't tried the cupcakes of Saint Cupcakes!
I'm from Portland, Oregon just moved to NYC in search of cupcakes that substitutes my belly's desires of stuffing on cupcakes. Went here couple days ago with a friend (whom I fed St. Cupcakes while visiting to Portland). We were so disappointed after trying the sassy red velvet & chocolate somethin. It was beyond comparable and I was expecting the sun & moon.
I missed St. Cupcakes red velvet with cream cheese icing!!!!
GARRR. Pls, if you have a friend in Oregon visiting to Portland, Tell them to get you the chocolate cream cheese & red velvet (--only made on Fridays). You're taste buds will prove my review to be accurate!
St. Cupcake is a local cupcake bakery in Portland, Oregon ( Flanders & 17th.)
I tried this head-to-head with Magnolia. No comparison. The vanilla on vanilla is so so so moist/yellow yum! The place is cute as heck. Even though the service was smug, this was too delicious for 4 stars.

SSS cupcakes are so much better than any of the cupcakes we can get in Boston. They are so moist and fluffy and delicious and cute. I love the black and white, and I love that I can eat it there with a fine cup of unsweetened iced tea. It's a must-stop for me whenever I'm in NYC.

4 stars for taste, softness and having lovely frosting that isn't a bit too sweet. I love SSS's cupcakes. Whenever I go to NYC, I always make it a point to stop by SSS for cupcakes, it really is a must... I love the astmosphere of the place, the homely feel of the unmatching chairs... and just the smell of the place overall makes you happy. Baked goods... mMmm.
I went this past Sunday for a box of half a dozen -- at $1.50 a piece, it's freakin' amazing! The price is really unbeatable. I got 2 sexy red velvet (dont you just love the names?), 2 sunshine (with strawberry frosting, mMm), 1 pumpkin spice -- to die for, and 1 pistachio, with little bits of nuts on top of the frosting. Love them all!
The girls behind the counter are so cute -- dressed all vintage-esque in their paisley print dresses. However, I feel as though they get annoyed quickly when people are unsure of what flavors to pick. I mean it's expected -- especially with tourists -- but whatever. It just irritates me to see them get annoyed so easily with their customers. Soo, 3 stars for them.

Revised 5-4-08, upgraded from three to four stars. Why? Three excellent reasons: 1. Banana pudding. 2. Spicy pumpkin cupcake with cream cheese frosting. 3. Carrot cupcake with cream cheese frosting.
I have been searching for New York City's best red velvet cupcake. This was not it. I asked if I could get cream cheese frosting on my red velvet, and the answer was no, it only comes with the buttercream or the chocolate almond buttercream.
I enjoyed the chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting, and I loved the homey feel, the hipster girls working on the frosting assembly line, the awesome cute vibe I got when walking in... but I couldn't love it. I appreciate the $1.50 cupcakes. That is a fair price.
But why, oh, why can't they make a real red velvet cupcake with cream cheese frosting?

I really don't think there's anything I can say that hasn't been said yet...
BUT DAMN GIRL THAT'S A FINE ASS CUPCAKE.
Oh and it was delicious. Perfect, basically. Moist cake, delicious frosting (I got a simple yellow cake with white frosting), excellent cake to frosting ratio... perfect.
Except I was sweating, but not from the cupcake. I tend to keep at room temperature generally when eating cupcakes. But something was off yesterday... like the AC.
I will come back here again, completely open to a five star review, just please turn the AC on. How can I completely enjoy my cupcake when a part of me is worrying about sweating all over the damn place?
Adorable place, wish it was a little bigger, but it's right the way it is. It felt right to me.

Hands down the BEST CUPCAKES in NYC!!
I wish I had discovered this place earlier and I also wish it wasn't sooo far from where I live. Maybe it's a good thing it's not so close b/c I'd be here everyday if it were.
Today I got the strawberry cream cheese and the lemon cupcakes. The strawberry was by far the best cupcake I've ever had. The cake was moist with strawberries inside and the cream cheese frosting was perfect. Just the right sweetness and just the right amount. Some bakeries put a huge mound of icing it's overwhelming. I'm bummed though b/c this is not an everyday menu item. My cousin tried the lemon and said it was delicious. It had a strong lemon flavor, so if you try this one, make sure you like lemon.
I will definitely be back to try the spicy pumpkin, pistachio and red velvet.
The variety of flavors is a plus. Crumbs has a variety of cupcakes, but they don't taste nearly as good as these. The biggest plus is not only are these cupcakes the best tasting, they are the cheapest out there ($1.50)!!
Since I haven't tried the red velvet, I can't say how it compares to my current favorite place (Billy's) for red velvet. I'm sure it's going to be a close call. Thank goodness SSS doesn't serve banana cake (not cupcake) like Billy's, b/c I am a loyal customer of Billy's for that. But I may have to become a loyal customer of SSS for cupcakes.
Check it out!!!!

My first stop on my most recent trip was Sugar Sweet Sunshine. Thanks to the great reviews I read on Yelp, I wrote it down as a must-see cupcake place! I was jet-lagged, my hubby was cranky, and we were freezing cold coming from California. We were supposed to meet my family for dinner at Katz's Deli that night, so we purposely got to the area early just to find this cupcake place.
When we walked in, it felt a little like walking into our very own Central Perk but with cupcakes and hot chocolate. It has a cute little seating area and a fabulous display of cupcakes. But wait. I paused, staring at the names of the cupcakes. The Bob? What the bleep is the Bob? Well it's yellow cake with chocolate almond buttacream. yummy. gimme the buttacream.
My goal was to eat one and give the rest to my cousins, who were nice enough to put up with me and my hubby for the week. Instead, I had one, and my husband had one - the SEXY red velvet. We loved them. Most memorable cupcakes we've had since our July trip to Sprinkles in Beverly Hills. Anyway, since we didn't have much to show my cousins, I actually had to go back up to the counter and refill the box with more cupcakes. I got them a Pistachio and a Black & White... Just Right (no that's the name of it). Instead of really giving the cupcakes to them, I secretly ate them for breakfast at their house anyway. Go figure. That's how much I loved them.
The best part of it all? The price!!! At just $1.50 a piece, I love this place even more! No other place has been able to beat that price.

I haven't been to magnolia bakery yet honestly I feel I don't have to. I have found happiness with one particular pistachio cupcake at sugar sweet sunshine.
My love in question is a pale green cake of the tenderest crumb and delicate nut flavor swathed in "the moose" also known as satin buttercream also known as swiss meringue buttercream. The 'cream is an airy yet rich cloud of creamy dreaminess that can only result from the union of egg whites, sugar and a heap and a half of butter. The precious cake is then topped with a few meaty pistachios and the rest is up to you. Or me.this transforming experience only sets you back $1.50. And unless someone very nice brings it to you, you get to hang out in the oh so pleasant Sugar Sweet Sunshine to eat your benutted (or other flavor)treat on a couch or vintagey chair, surrounded by the flowered wallpaper, and watching local cupcake scenesters, which can also be transformative but in a different way. Oh and theres a wall of dog pictures, which is nice.

This place is wonderful enough to get me on my least favorite of all trains (FFFFFFF!!!!!!) on multiple Sundays, so that alone proves it's pretty fantastic.
$1.50/cupcake! Cheapest lunch ever.

I am happy to pay for cupcakes I don't make time to bake.
I pay for flavors I can't easily concoct.
I pay for buttercream frosting that's piled high and tinted a lovely pastel color with food coloring.
I pay for a beautifully decorated cupcake that I can't possibly hope to replicate (nor, frankly, do I care to).
I pay for fresh cake.
I pay for ordinary flavors and ordinary frosting that's just "better."
But, with my recent trip to SSSB, I have to say "eh." I've gone to Billy's Bakery and Magnolia Bakery, and was hoping that the hype surrounding this joint would be justified. It wasn't.
Yes, it was cheaper. But, I found the cupcakes to be no better than the ones someone else's mom would have brought to my 2nd grade Valentine's Day party at school.
Now, I don't want you to all think I'm a naysayer. Perhaps my slightly negative response was due to my recent cocktail of Percoset and Valium. But, I don't think so. As I hobbled here from New York Downtown Hospital, cupcakes were my sole focus; my raison d'etre, if you will. I was thrilled to make my lemon and red velvet selections. But, once I got my precious box home and dug into "just one for now," I was non-plussed.
There, I said it. I was non-plussed. I tried the Sunshine, Sexy Red Velvet (I love the name), and Lemon Yummy.
I was non-plussed.
Price was good, though. And, it was easy to take the #9 bus back to Battery Park City.

The "sunshine" cupcake is so great I never get anything else but I heard the non-cupcake goods are even better. Cute place. A nice place to relax if you can get a seat, i.e. anytime but friday and saturday evenings.
I took a recommendation from a friend of mine, and decided to try out Sugar Sweet Sunshine. This was my day off, and I decided to make the trip in from Astoria, just for some cupcake action.
It was a weekday in the early afternoon, but the place was still pretty slammed. People behind me in line seemed to be getting a little impatient at people's indecisiveness in choosing, but everybody who worked there was really polite.
So, since it was my first time here, I decided to try a little sampling of the cupcakes -
Sunshine - It's yellow cake with vanilla buttercream. The cake was so moist and delicious. The buttercream is stiffer and sweeter than your standard buttercream. Not too sweet though. Really a great cupcake.
Sexy Red Velvet - This one is red velvet cake with "the Moose." The red velvet cake was okay. Didn't have much chocolate flavor, or any flavor at all for that matter, and wasn't quite as moist as the yellow cake. "The Moose" is supposed to be satin buttercream. It's pretty disgusting. Wayyyy too buttery. This should be renamed the wasted calorie cupcake.
Pumpkin - This is pumpkin cake with cream cheese icing. I thought this one was pretty good. It tasted very much like a good carrot cake. Very nice.
Lemon Yummy - It's lemon cake with lemon buttercream. The buttercream is like that on the Sunshine, but with a strong and refreshing lemony taste. The cake itself didn't have very much lemon flavor at all - it just tasted like yellow cake to me. Still very yummy, just like the name implies.
So, all in all, I'd say these are really good cupcakes. I still have a thing for Billy's. But if I'm on the LES, I'm definitely going to pop into Sugar Sweet Sunshine.
(Just one extra comment. Somebody else commented about the cupcakes keeping well. That wasn't the case with mine. After two days, they were pretty rock hard. So eat them right away!!)

the sunshine is yum bum and then some.
A for atmosphere---great vibe
A+ for creativity---fun flavors that actually taste good
A- for taste---sunshine's are good, but not as good as Magnolias, I hate to say.
B for attitude---usually the chicks serving are really sweet and helpful, but once I went in craving a Pumkin spice (I'd been craving it all day) and when i saw the tray was empty I asked if they could please check in the kitchen. The woman serving told me they're weren't any, so I despondently asked for a red velvet instead.
Before I even left the counter I sunk my teeth into what I hadn't realized was going to be buttercream frosting (I LOATHE buttercream). Then just as I was spitting it out, I was a fresh tray of Pumpkin Spice being loading into the display case.
I was a little annoyed, but it WAS a Sunday and they had a line out the door so I guess I'll let it slide.
I only know about these cupcakes because a friend of a friend once picked a cupcake up here before meeting both myself and said friend at a nearby bar.
She had the cupcake, so I had to get to know her to get to said cupcake. She is wonderful! But not as wonderful as the cupcake is.
The cake part is very flavorful and not at all dry - almost cornmeal-y, in my opinion, although I don't think anyone else reading this would agree with that. The cupcake happens to go very well with Strongbow cider, too.
The frosting is slightly sweeter than average, but not too sweet. The cupcakes are dainty and cute, and I love them and will probably leave work right now to eat one.

Recommended for: Cupcakes, Banana pudding, satisfy your sweet-tooth.
Service 5, Selection 5, Quality 5.
SSB, where have you been all my life you beautiful thing you. After a fun night at label we are walking down the street, and I hear "must have cupcake"... Surely, there is no bad time to have a cupcake and we all went in.
Space is small, but not cramped, and well lit. The service was warm, friendly and helpful. And at $1.50 per cupcake, who could argue with that!
Selection is big, and as an "over-thinker" I needed assistance to guide me through the vast variety of cupcakes. Of course, I got the red-velvet, and I am not too sure about the others (though i think we also got a pumpkin). The cupcakes had a great ratio of frosting to cake. The key aside from the ratio is the flavor. Some places give you a flavorful cake, others more often then not focus on the icing. SSSB packs a powerful 1 2 punch. Not only is the cake moist, light and flavorful (the pumpkin cupcake tasted quite pumpkiny), and the icing and spices complimented it quite nicely. The red velvet lived up to the hype and was scarfed down in 3 bites... The banana pudding - just one word - WOW!
For someone who ventures all the way to Prince St. for a slice of pizza, I wouldn't mind venturing all the way to LES for that perfect little cupcake to bring a smile to my face :)

I love cupcakes! So naturally when relocating to NYC, I did some research and one bakery that constantly came up was the lovely triple S, Sugar Sweet Sunshine!
I don't think that this can count as a FULL review until I've tried all of their cupcakes but as for the one Pistachio flavored cupcake that I did try, it's to die for! PERFECT! Nice and moist with just the right amount of flavor to curb to your cravings, that's if you like pistachio. :)
I was fully satisfied and really can't wait to try the rest. The only possible downside is that you could really taste the butter in the frosting but hey, I like butter so it's all good to me!
I can't wait to go back. :D
Oh and if you don't want to take my word for it, apparently MSN agrees as well...

Awesome variety of flavorful, adorable cupcakes. The icing is true buttercream with the right amount of sweet in it (The Cupcake Cafe has buttercream icing but I don't think it's sweet enough). What I like about this Sugar Sweet Sunshine place is that the focus is really on the taste of the cake. The pistachio are really awesome and you definitely can't get one of these at Magnolia. Worth it =) And the inside is adorable with some room to take a seat and indulge some sweet.

Some people have spiritual teachers, others have political advisers, but I...well...I have a cupcake guru. Aleks K. introduced me to the yummy goodness that is Sugar Sweet Sunshine. The girl knows cupcakes and therefore I trusted her opinion. And although Crumbs will always have my heart, SSS is a REALLY close second. The pistachio cupcake in particular was so moist and and had a perfect (as Aleks would say) frosting to cake ratio. You also can't beat the price, nor the adorable, homemade feel you get when you enter the bakery. Even the cupcakes look as if they were frosted with love--and I bet they were.

A cupcake. Mmmm. Little bit of goodness that fits in the palm of your hand and tempts you with its subtle sexiness.
I cannot think of a better way to spend $1.50. Seriously.
My favorite is the pistachio, but I'm not going to turn down a classic vanilla or vanilla with almond frosting or even a lemon. That'd be crazy.
True story: I was head over heels for this guy who lived on the les. (Turns out it was just a rebound, and I wasn't actually head over heels, but that is another story entirely). Anyway, he introduced me to Sugar Sweet Sunshine (really, the only decent thing I can say about him now), and one day when he was supposed to be returning to the city from a trip abroad, I thought I'd be sweet and stop in at Sugar Sweet and then head over to his place to surprise him with cupcakes! Well, he wasn't there, or he didn't answer (again, all the details lend themselves to a much longer story not appropriate to this review), so I had no choice but to eat both of the cupcakes I'd just bought. No regrets. And the thing is, it made me realize something. If forced to choose between a man and a perfectly frosted cupcake, I'd probably go with the cake!

My girlfriend swears by this place. This little haven in the LES makes some really good treats. We got both kinds of the red velvets and they were tasty. Just the right amount of sweet but not like Magnolia's - theirs is, in my opinion, diabetic sweet. Their cupcakes are more on the fluffy side yet moist and the frosting doesn't taste like petroleum. They got a cozy and chill space inside, they got a couch and a huge chair to rest your laurels while you scarf down the baked goods. Oh, and the price for each one really makes it a deal.

The difference between a TOURIST and a VISITOR is this one little known theory: TOURISTS wait in line forever with tons of cash in their fanny packs so they can afford their $4 cupcake at Magnolia's, while VISITORS hop over to Sugar Sweet Sunshine with the change in their pockets to enjoy their sloppily delicious sugary sweet cupcakes full of sunshine.
I really wanted to do the tourist thing and try Magnolia's. However, I just did not qualify as 1. I had no fanny pack 2. I have the patience of a little kid needing to go to the bathroom (I wanted to punch the girl in front of me yacking on her cell phone while waiting in line at Target once because I was so annoyed and hated to wait) and 3. I only had $2 left over from my dinner at Tao's the night before. So I headed over to Sugar Sweet Sunshine and ordered a red velvet cupcake. Gosh, and to think I thought the ghetto cupcakes I baked at home were the best cupcakes on earth...Ms. Sugar Sweet Sunshine sure proved me wrong.

Magnolia = too sweet
Buttercup = too dense
Cupcake Cafe = too tasteless and hard
Suger Sweet Sunshine = rainbows, daisies and all things nice...
Granted, these may not be everyone's PERFECT cupcake, but they sure come close. Perfectly sized, not too sweet, flavorful but not overpowering...and the cake is always so soft and moist! It makes you want to eat a second one, rather than the other bakeries where your teeth are aching after just half!
BUT - I have to admit that above all else, I am completely ADDICTED to their puddings! Their banana pudding lacks the artificial sweetness you get at Magnolias...and I don't even LIKE bananas. My latest craze, suggested by a friend when I couldn't decide between the chocolate bomb (chocolate mousse/pudding mixed with chunks of chocolate cake), was to ask them to give me half-half. Ask them to put the chocolate pudding bomb first, then top it with the banana pudding - OH MY GOD. *yum!!!!*

I felt like a kid in Sugar Sweet Sunshine. I had that feeling that I had just stumbled on something amazing. Their "Sassy Red Velvet" cupcake is one of the most delicious things I have ever eaten. You should try the pumpkin spice cupcake as well. Even the coffee had a magical edge to it.
I walked out of this bakery having eaten two cupcakes already, and with a box of four more. The good news, they preserved quite well. Several days later when I got home they were still pretty fresh.

People rave about this place, and I can see why: it's cute, it's got a giant picture of Jackie Kennedy behind the counter, and the cupcake selection is more or less solid.
I refrain from a Fifth Star on account of
1) the uniform flavoring (alot of the cupcakes have an almond base, not my thing) and
2) consistency (in my experience, they always fall apart)
But if I'm in the EV, I try to make an appearance. It's better than Magnolia (though not quite the equal of Buttercup).

I love, love, love this place. Just as good as Magnolia and I like how there are other flavors like red velvet, pistachio, and the usual vanilla and chocolate. It's cute that the cupcakes have names like ooey gooey, sexy and sassy red velvet. This is a must visit after a yummy meal at Cafe Havana.
Whoa!
252 reviews so far for my neighborhood cupcake shop? So awesome! This place is a gem. This is what I do on the way home: get a sandwich across the streeet at Tiny's, then venture across the street to get a cupcake four-pack: two sunshine (buttercream) and two pistachio (for my man). Round the corner, go upstairs, sit on couch and devour.
I've been to many other cupcake shops, and they don't quite measure up to this. Maybe it's the love the owners put into them? Don't know. All I know is that I miss it.

I enjoyed my treats from here greatly, but not so greatly that I can dole out 5 stars, which admittedly saddens me, as the concept of the place - the staff and service, value, and ingredients - are all excellent. I immediately inquired, as I always do, if their products contained any trans fat? No, I was told, they do not. All butter then? Yes ma'am! Glorious joy, I can dig in without fearing dire health consequences.
It's a tiny, tiny place with limited seating, though they make the best of the space they have. They offer a large variety of cupcakes - spicy pumpkin with carrots and cream cheese frosting, lemon with lemon buttercream, pistachio, ooey chocolate with dark chocolate buttercream, red velvet with vanilla buttercream and with dark chocolate buttercream, vanilla/vanilla, and chocolate chocolate.
I also recall blueberry multigrain muffins, raspberry cream cheese buns, pistachio bundt cake, apple coffee cake, traditional coffee cake, ooey chocolate layer cake, coconut layer cake, apple crumble, chocolate pudding, banana pudding, and more. And they serve quite a respectable range of coffee, tea, and espresso beverages. Sadly, there is NO BATHROOM here, so when that caffeine takes its course, you'll have to find respite elsewhere.
I had got a basic red velvet cupcake ($1.50), a raspberry cream cheese bun ($1.50) and a slice of coconut layer cake ($4). I was extremely disappointed to discover that the frosting on my cupcake was vanilla buttercream instead of the traditional cream cheese; not only that, but I don't much like buttercream and this was very bland in particular. I scraped it off. The cupcake itself was quite tasty, but not spectacular.
The raspberry cream cheese bun was generously sized, sort of resembling an individual coffee cake (no actual globs or such of cream cheese), with a rich, buttery flavour and tender moist crumb, swirled with some raspberry jam - definitely the best of my selections. The coconut layer cake had a meringue based frosting that was delicious, but the actual cake, while tasty, was plain yellow cake and a tad on the dry side. The only coconut was in the middle layer of frosting as shreds, and I would have preferred a stronger coconut note throughout the cake and frosting itself.
I tried a bite of a lemon cupcake, which was all lemon, all the time and extremely good, up on par with the raspberry confection. The chocolate buttercream I tried was surprising delicious, almost like ganache mixed into vanilla buttercream. I will be back to try their very cheap cookies ($0.50, I believe), the puddings, and pistachio and pumpkin treats. This place makes some very tasty items, but needs to be more consistent, and put CREAM CHEESE frosting on their red velvet cupcakes.
