Go here. Ask for Charles. He is FANTASTIC.

I have long slightly wavy hair. I like alot of layers and bangs. In the end I like a good long hair wash and go kind of cut. If this is something you are into then you will be delighted with Charles.

My husband also now goes to Charles for cut and color.

They take credit cards and you can tip on your credit card (some places make you do a cash tip-not here).

This used to be my favorite salon, mostly because of an awesome stylist.  However, in November/December 2011, a friend told me that she drove past Sugar and saw that they had taken down the sign and were remodeling it (the location on Sunset, one block away from Cafe Tropical on Sunset and Parkman/Silverlake Blvd.).  A text to the stylist confirmed that Sugar Hair Salon that I knew had closed.  So, I decided to edit my review and warn others.

Maybe I would have left my review as it was for Sugar, except that they're trying to pull a fast one - the Sugar I knew was not located on Glendale Blvd.! Grrr...

I like to think of Sugar as a hipsville version of Floyd's Barbershop in Mayberry.  It's a really nice atmosphere and gossip is keenly encouraged.

On top of that, I've been going there forever on and off, but for the last year, totally ON because my other hairdresser was quite literally on crack and managed to break my hair off, then charged me to put on a treatment that didn't work.

So re-enter Sugar, where Tommy saved my hair and it's continuing to come back thanks to combining the controversial Brazilian Blow-Out (sounds dirty but sadly, isn't) with my touch-ups.

I've referred my friends there and now they are loyal Sugar clients.  PLUS, it's conveniently located across the street from Local, and in-between Tropical and Dusty's.

Two friends and I went to get our hair cut yesterday.  Sugar has a lowkey feel and the prices are ridiculously affordable.  I paid $40 for a dry cut.  One of my friends paid 50 or 60 for a cut and wash.  And my second friend paid 100-125 for a cut and color.  And we all LOVED our hair when it we were done.

Shanti was our hair dresser and I highly recommend her

Sara Gasporotto is the short hair cutting queen.  I followed her from her last salon.  What's particularly great about Sara is that as most stylists will recommend, "have an idea" of what you want, sometimes we don't.  Yesterday, I thought I had an idea but in the end told her "I trust you" and the cut was great and the highlights very natural.  So not a big change but subtle and natural.  She really understands short hairj!

Also what was awesome is that I was able to get an appointment squeezed in on a day's notice.

Best haircut I've had in years hands down all thanks to Jessica.  Never going back to the ever-trendy, ever-dissapointing Rudy's or Flyod's for an uneven half-assed-hipster-doo.  Thanks Jessica for re-establishing my  faith in your profession.

Jessica.  I pretty much follow Jessica wherever Jessica may roam and I gotta' say, this is my favorite salon she's been at.  She is the ONLY "hair technician" in my life that I ALWAYS walk away from actually HAPPY about what she's done to my hair.  Every few years she'll have a new idea for a cut and I just let her go for it...she's always right.  I send my whole band and girlfriend to her...I think that says it all.

    A loyal fan.

Finding a good stylist is so hard! I've had several throughout my stay here in LA. Most dont listen or care when your sitting in their chair. This was not the case when I sat in Shanti's chair!

I have only seen Shanti at Sugar and really since I've been seeing her I have no desire to see anyone else. She listens and knows what will work with your coloring, facial features and personal style. I've been seeing her for over a year now and couldn't be any happier!

She is extremely talented in color! She cuts and styles my hair in a way that  I could do it at home and have it look just as good ( I am by no means good at doing hair!)

She also does my boyfriend's hair, which also looks great after seeing her!

I'm not particularly attached to the salon, they have various local artist showcased their which is cool.

    Hmmmm, where to begin?

On a hot summer day, they gave me a cold beer in a frosted glass and offered me more if I needed it.

Karen gives the best male haircut I have been able to find in the last 10 years in this city. She is simply the best, and if you want a cool male haircut for less than 40$, you really couldn't do better. I followed her here from Refuge.

If you want look for parking on the side streets in the area, then you won't have to worry about filling the meter as you try to extend your stay here as long as possible.

Karen is the best. If you're a guy and need a haircut please try Sugar.

Groovy place.  I had been seeing Karen for a few years up until a few months ago when I moved to NYC.  I miss Karen.  Even if now I have trendy New York salons all around, non have been better than Karen.

She was the first stylist in LA to cut my hair correctly.  (medium length guys cut)  She would cut it dry which I've found out is the only way that works for my fine hair.

We love you Karen, oh yes we do!  We love you Karen, and we'll be true!  When you're not near us, we're blue!  Oh Karen we love you.

The last time I had an appointment with Nicole, it was for me and a friend. We got there a little early so parked in the lot, left a note on the windshield in case we had to move it and went to the restaurant next door for a Margaraita. We had 30 min before the first appointment started.

My friend went to get her appt and I stayed in the restaurant eating, imagine my surprise when I got a phone call from the receptionist saying they had been looking for the owner of my car for over half an hour. I call bullshit on that one cause my friend was sitting in the salon during part of this so-called search. I explained that we had 2 appointments and that one of the salon clients was actually sitting in the salon while I was on the phone with the girl. BTW this receptionist was not Gina. It was some tall red-haired b*tch who left a bitchy note on my windshield and didn't even remove it after finding out I was a paying customer. I still have the note somewhere so I'll be scanning it and posting it to yelp.

Oh, and didn't get to get my haircut since someone...one of their receptionists but I don't know which one, over-booked Nicole and I couldn't be seen. This was the first time I got crap service and I will say the last.

I would love to give Sugar 5 stars, but the receptionist killed that, so it's 4.5 stars.

As for my hair, Jessica was AWESOME. My old colorist got lazy over time, and eventually I had 1/2 brassy reddish-blond hair on top and golden blond on bottom. I was terrified of seeing someone new, but Jessica did color correction for me and did a superb job.

She listened to what I wanted, talked with me through a thorough consultation, and provided a price quote that she stuck to, despite the incredible amount of work my hair took ('cause there's a TON of it). She spent 3 hours and worked at a crazy pace to get the roots corrected, and putting full foils on in both high- and low-lights. The end result is beautiful! I have received so many compliments from friends and family at how great the color is now. She trimmed my hair as well, and was obviously well-trained in that respect, too.

JESSICA IS 5 STARS, no question.

The receptionist (young woman; multiracial; short, very curly, colored blond hair) WAS HORRIBLE! She spoke excessively loudly, not paying attention to the customers nor the stylists' needs. She clearly messed up Jessica's schedule, and was more concerned with going across the street to get soup rather than fixing the problems she caused. My favorite part was when she said loudly to one of the stylists that "people who become doctors are crazy. " Well, I'm a doctor, I was offended, and I was stunned that this woman was so rude and unprofessional. THE RECEPTIONIST SHOULD BE FIRED.

But Jessica is amazing!!! (and totally worth dealing with the horrific receptionist)

Other notes: the salon could do with a meticulous cleaning... the creases next to the waiting area bench were full of hair, and the corners of the room and some of the stations were dusty.

It didn't matter that I could have found a new salon and a new girl after I moved to the west side.  She's been doing my hair for over 3 years, and with great service.... I'm willing to travel.  20 miles is a minor trek for fab hair.

I really really wanted to like this place. It's very close to my place and I love supporting local businesses. Sadly, after my visit today, I can't be sure if I will ever go back :(

My hairstylist was Nikki. When I called to make an appointment, I asked the receptionist how much a haircut for long hair would be. She said she wasn't sure because each stylist had different price sets, but she assured me that it would be around $45 or $50. So I made an appt.

Nikki was very nice. I had a dry haircut which means I didn't get shampooed. When it was time to pay, the bill was $65, which was more than what the receptionist told me on the phone. I paid $65 plus 20% tips and left feeling cheated.

My haircut is fine. I just don't like how the store gives unclear, incorrect info about their pricing. Also, I am not sure if it's worth it to pay $65 for a shampooless haircut. Too bad. I was secretly hoping Sugar would become my new fav. Oh well...

Being the loyal client that I am, I recently visited Sugar for the first time since my girl Nikki was transplanted here. You gotta know a good hair sculptor when you find one and when you find them, you gotta try your hardest not to lose them! Nikki is way worth the effort ;-)

I visited Nikki for a quick, simple trim. I am in the long, painstaking process of growing my bob out into long, luscious locks. As predicted Nikki fully delivered. I got the much needed trim and she shaped it up a bit to help me bare through the growing process, which for me is unusually hard. I often have urges to just cut it all off again when it's looking a little blah. Self control, self control, self control. If I say it enough, maybe I'll listen.

The salon itself is small and quite simple, but hey it gets the job done. The décor could use a little tweaking, but décor is not what I came here for so not much to complain about. Plus, they offer you a cold beverage to sip on upon arriving (including beer).

This cute little spot has a lot of potential. I look forward to my next visit, though it won't be for months! Ugh the joys of growing it out.

Once you get past the scratched up windows (compliments of really stoopid kids) Sugar is actually, well... sweet.

I only came here for Karen, a survivor from the ongoing Refuge Wars; it's been almost a year since we last saw each other due to economic circumstances, but she knows exactly what to do with my hair. There's just something about Karen because whenever I see her, my hair gets softer, stylier, and well... mucho impressive.

Best of all, Karen gives me a good rate which is a godsend because as much as Sugar is beginning to grow on me like a candy mold, it's way too high a price for the simple cuts I come in for. Karen, Karen, I love you, Karen!! You're the ingredient that makes Sugar a success!

I really loved this place and loved Nicole until I was burned, and now I'll never go back.

I scheduled a hair appt with Nicole for a cut and color the day before I was getting my hair brazilian straightened. I got off work early and headed to the salon. When I got there, the receptionist told me that my appt had been cancelled, but I hadn't gotten the message because my phone had died sometime in the afternoon. I get it. Things happen. You have to cancel sometimes. But on my way out, I ran into Nicole doing her own hair at the salon.

I can't really describe how awkward it was, especially since I explained that I was getting my hair straightened and really needed it done. And she hemmed and hawed and suggested that I make another appt for a couple days after.

When I got home and plugged in my phone, I had a message from the receptionist saying that Nicole was sick and had to cancel all of her appts for the day.

I don't appreciate being stood up and I don't appreciate being lied to... I recently ran into a former employee that told me that this was commonplace. I'm sure I'm not the last customer Sugar will lose.

Sugar has been on my radar for quite some time now... it's in my 'hood, has decent reviews from my fellow yelpers, and it wasn't ridiculously expensive. I seem to change my hair color every month, but it's more due to the fact that it keeps getting whacked out because my hair is weird like that. When you bleach it blond, it turns red. When you dye it brown, it turns green (that situation was my own fault, but very educational.) And when you dye it brown, it turns black. That's what happened when I went to Sugar.

It was partly my bad; I wanted to go to a rich, dark brown... but after what turned out to be a miscommunication between myself and Adriana, it was taken so dark that it looked inky-black. The first few days after, I was getting flashbacks to my goth days during high school in Seattle every time I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror. It was seriously freaking me out, so I had to do something about it.

I needed to get some of the color lifted out, however, Adriana doesn't live in LA anymore! I don't know why I always seem to have this kind of luck, but whenever I try a new stylist, they always have one foot out the door! Well, she apparently returns to LA every couple weeks to take care of her regular clients, which is how I slipped in. But she is now living and working in New York City (the lucky girl.) I would have gone back to Adriana to have her fix it, but she had already jetted.

My experience at Sugar was OK... Adriana gave a great shampoo massage and I loved how she trimmed my bangs (which she took care of without charging me.) But I did not find my stylist salvation here... and the search continues.

Of all my features, I am MOST VAIN and MOST PROTECTIVE of my hair. I have sooper dooper long thick Asian hair that gets messed up by 95%of all hairstylists so I usually forego all haircutting unless I absolutely need it.

During a desperate heatwave I was driven to find a stylist finally- and I consider myself super lucky to have found Tommy at Sugar.

I showed Tommy a photo of a haircut that was ALMOST what I wanted for my haircut- told him what I wanted generally and made clear what I absolutely did NOT want to happen (ie. mullets, J-Pop hair, Asian News Anchor Hair)...and a mere 15 minutes later I had a haircut that was 100% of what I had wanted that was better than the photo I brought in.

This is probably owed to the fact that Tommy not only has the technical chops, but he's also got strong perception skills. He probably takes cues from his client's wardrobe, and gets a read on who you are as he starts talking to you...and after 15 minutes of effortless conversation with the man- I got a haircut that was perfect for my face AND my personality.

I didn't get to work with Adriana, but while I was there she was also real cool- and gave a swinging pompadour to a black clad artist type guy and a fierce bob to an ultra hipster girl.

Fun tip: grab an espresso con leche from Tropical a few doors down. That way, when you leave Sugar you'll have a bangin' haircut and a serious coffee buzz. It's a great way to start your day. That being said, I refuse to have my hair cut here.

I don't know where they're hiding all the reviews about the poor service and rude attitudes (which seem to be abundant on other review sites) but that's what I experienced.

I don't care if these people are working with the hands of god - there is no bigger turn off than walking in to a place and feeling like a piece of crap.

I'm not sure why this place is called Sugar, because there is nothing sweet about it. Maybe they're trying to be ironic.

Jessica, I am so happy I found you.

My hairdresser for the past 3 years moved to New York a few months ago and I was pretty worried that I wouldn't be able to find anyone who would listen to me the same way while still getting creative and giving me the edgy cut that I want. I tried a different salon a couple of months ago and the cut I got there was pretty bad (layers that were way too top-heavy and an almost Carol Brady-esque flip in the back --I was pissed.) After the painfully long 6 weeks passed and it was finally time to get another cut, I made sure to do my research and go somewhere that could reverse the damage.

I read all the great reviews that Sugar got on yelp and decided to give it a shot too. I just got my hair cut there yesterday by Jessica and I couldn't be happier. She really listened to what I wanted but also knew the right way to shape my layers/bangs to match my face. She evened out all the crazy layers the other chick had given me and managed to make the finished product look great. No more Carol Brady. Oh happy day.

I can't wait to go back there again. The salon itself is really cute and everyone who works there seems really cool. Good vibes for sure.

Tommy is a great guy. They're very friendly there.
But he is good on cutting rock n' roll style hair, not classic, modern or sexy styles. Every time when I went to him he did something different which never looked good on me. I always asked him to make it  sexy and fresh look but I could never get that.
A good hair stylist should be able to tell you what style would look good on you or not and if your hair chemistry is ok with certain cuts or not.

At first when i walked into Sugar I was confused. No one addressed me and i was like like "what.. huh... am I too square to be in here?" I was also embarassed because my hair was damaged and orange.. and I was scared of how it was going to be regarded.

So Sammi the assistant and Tommy pondered my clown hair long and hard and came up with an awesome solution. An hour into my stay I was digging the vibe. Chatting away with Sammi (who I would totally recomend.. she needs more clientele to get away from her "assistant" status) and talking musak and cars with Tommy was on point. Not akward like I usually am with my redneck unhip hair dressers in North Carolina.

The price was reasonable. I got my roots done.. and highlights.. and a cut.. and it was 120 all together. I was expecting to pay at least 150. The best part is that they were both getting excited about my hair in the end.. and were telling me of visions they have for it in the future. Im totally down. I reccomend this place.. but only if you are kinda weird and like to chat with weirdos.

    Yeah.. i said it.

Sugar is just OK. From some of the reviews one would expect an uber-hip spot where you walk out looking invariably fabulous. It's not all that glamorous. I've had blowouts here (decent) and seen haircuts going out the door that were really nothing to be proud of.
For a little hole in the wall, they are exceptionally snotty here, and painfully wannabe hipster.
I walked across the street to Silverlake Studio, which doesn't try so hard, and got a blowout that crushed the Sugar blowout in twenty minutes.

My haircut turned out OK and bangs are pretty awesome.

The customer service was kind of bad though. It seemed like everyone was annoyed that I was there to get a haircut. They probably were.
I walked in about 10 minutes early for my appointment and I was confused since the receptionist is in the back of the room and took awhile to greet me.

Tommy did a pretty good job of cutting my hair - but he was a spazz. Totally all over the place, greeting his friends and petting a dog in between cutting my hair. Also there was mad trash talking happening about the last girl who had her hair cut before me. There were arms flailing with scissors coming at my face as he explained that this girl was terrible. But really - my hair looks good - maybe I just don't have the nerves for this place.

Now, I'm of the Rockabilly persuasion and I usually style my hair in a pretty Marilyn Monroe 50s curled look.  Really classic, really tight, and really not contemporary by any means.  That means I usually get a "grandma" haircut of the "set and style" variety.  And, THAT means that no young chicky fresh outta beauty school is going to know how to do this and do this well.  But, Tommy understands.

He completely know what I was going for.  Trimmed things up and my signature 'do came out perfectly.  He styles a lot of the burlesque girls' hair, so he is definitely in his element here.  He is a scream, too.  Sparkling conversation; truthfully, I wanted to take him home.

Great reasonable prices.  Super cute huge pic of a chihuaha in the space.

The shops needs a bit of a "womans touch", but I'm pretty critical in this arena, being an interior designer and all.....

    And please, PLEASE, receptionist:
Quit asking ladies if they want their hair to be shampooed with the haircut.  Of course we do!!!!  When did this become an option?  Maybe for a boy, but really?!!??

Adriana ROCKS. She came recommended by someone who had great hair (naturally) so my boyfriend and I scheduled an appt. After first meeting her, I had a feeling that she just "got it," as in, really understood my overall style, as well as my boyfriend's. There are few stylists out there what I'm ok with letting them try something new, and with her, I definitely feel she can do that. Since we've been going to her, she's been fantastic.

I recently moved to NYC and found out that she travels out here every few months to cut expat client hair. :)

The affordable price is simply a bonus to her mad skills with the shears.  I make sure to schedule an appt with her for every LA visit, even if it is just a bang trim.

If you are into good style with a bit of edge, Adriana can definitely make it happen.

Tommy will take care of you. I've been going to Tommy for two years now, and he's always shaped my hair (and consequently, my life) in an intentional, careful way. I've only gotten the dry and the wet cuts before and have not been disappointed.

And when you park your car in front of the salon, you can already hear the party inside through the doors. Because that's what it is. A hair party.

Yes I'm sure there are other Silverlake salons that could give me a cheaper deal, but Sugar is family!!!

Adriana is indeed the queen of bangs, and a total sweetheart. I was worried about going short with my bangs or getting any sort of razor cut, since i have cowlicks, but I didn't want to have uber trendy can't-see-anything long bangs, and she cut it perfectly. Her styles always look awesome and unstyled and work for even a product phobe like me. finger comb and go.

Also it doesn't have that were too hip and snobby vibe that intimidates me at most salons!

I have gotten my hair cut by Jill for  years... and have followed her through a few different salons. This is probably my favorite one. The place is small, clean, and quirky, and I love that the art changes almost every time I'm there. It's like getting my hair cut in an art gallery!

The staff is very friendly, and it's always very relaxing. The prices are pretty decent, and they seem to allow walk-ins (I always make an appointment). Parking is not bad, and it's close to lots of other attractions. Nearby restaurants are a fun stop, and there are quite a few mid-century furniture finds in the blocks surrounding.

    I love Sugar!

There is a great vibe there and the stylists is awesome.  I got my hair done by Samantha and have had tons of complements on it.

It has been over a month since my hair cut and it is still looking great.
She really gave me a fun, sexy new look that is totally easy to fix.  I can't wait to go back and do it again!

Tommy saved me and my hair...

So, yes I went out and bought a cheap chi iron. I know. I'm a dude. What's up? Well I like it and it's fun and there. However, buying a cheap iron, having it singe my hair off and then proceed to melt the chi iron plates off of the plastic handle is not what I had in mind for fun.

After unplugging the piece of S#!* I called Sugar. See, I have been meaning to check it out... in a few weeks when I would generally need a haircut. But due to this incident I needed something quick.

The receptionist was nice and told me that if I hurry I could get in (they were closing in 30 minutes). Tommy took care of the fringed hair, evened out the rest of my hair without going too short and now not only is the burnt hair removed but I think I look even better with this new cut. Then he only charged me $5!!!

Thanks Tommy and thanks Sugar. The next morning at work would have been funny but sad. Instead I got compliments on my new cut.

    Update 5/31/2008

I am so happy my hair stylist moved over here. Marie has taken me through a few different looks and I have been impressed with how well she performed all of them. She is amazing!!!

I'm pretty much obsessed with the haircut that Sara gave me today.  It was exactly what I have been imagining but never could put into words.  SO happy to have found the perfect stylist here so fast.  I don't plan on going anywhere else for awhile.

I started going to Sugar as soon as Marie moved over there from FUR because I would follow her scissors anywhere.  Sugar's not only a great and friendly salon, but an awesome community spot, as they often host art shows, and benefit parties with local bands.

Marie gives me my new favorite haircut every time I sit in her chair.  She's kind, attentive, and really good at her job.  She just gave me a bob and I love it.  I usually don't have much of a plan going in but I always come out looking rad.

I love Sugar and my girl Nicole!

After having one too many bad experiences with salons in LA, I had nearly lost hope. I went to a place in Beverly Hills where they gave me dirty looks and made me blow dry my own hair. I've been to places in Silverlake where I walked away with a mullet. I  resorted to cutting and dying my own hair... which is curly, straight, frizzy and hard to manage. Basically I was a  lost cause!

But my friend told me about her girl, Nicole, at Sugar. So I gave it a shot and it was love at first cut. The environment at Sugar is so laid back and Nicole is just amazing!!! She takes the time to know what you want and makes sure that  you walk away happy. She is great with color and gave me the red hue of my dreams. Plus, she is as sweet and funny as can be. Now all my girlfriends go to her and love her just as much as I do!!

THANKS NICOLE! I'LL SEE YOU SOON!
