Totally worth it if your kid loves trains. Price was a bit steep, but you get to ride back and forth all day if you like. Looking off into the distance, the scenery is paradise. Looking closely right off the tracks and you see into a lot of people's very unkempt back yards. Trashy.
Shout out to the tour guide, named "Uncle Terry" who seemed to love his job. He autographed a giant postcard of the train for our son, and placed a penny on the track for him to watch a REAL TRAIN squash the penny, not some dumb 50 cent machine. Kieran treasures that penny. Thanks, Uncle Terry!
It's fun, but expensive. Everyone that worked there was super nice. They talked the whole time about something or other, but I couldn't hear them. It's great if you're really into trains. The gift shop was cute.
Fun. Somewhat practical if you want a ride from one of the hotels or condos and into Lahaina. Great if u have kids. The ticket staff woman was surprisingly friendly, warm and down to earth. She figured out the cheapest way for us to buy tickets as we had various coupons and they were running a special. Not too convenient if you want to ride into Lahaina for lunch and it's quite the hike back to the train station from the Banion tree.
ha ha ha. We had a good laugh on this train for a couple reasons:
1. We thought it was going to actually be a train ride thru sugar cane.
2. We were on our honeymoon and this train ride is the most UN-HONEYMOON thing to do on the face of the earth.
3. The train took us behind a strip mall alley and we got a good chuckle about that.
4. The "tour guide" had some great one liners that literally made us laugh for real-- not a courtesy laugh but a REAL hearty laugh.
I can see kiddies enjoying this- adults w/out kiddies in tow, not so much but whatever, you're in MAUI-- Life is good on the train and off!

Our little train fanatics really enjoyed this but, frankly mom and dad were really put off by it. We didn't think it was worth the money at all. Intended to be a nod to Maui's historic sugar cane industry, the details of which were delivered through garbled crappy speakers, the train actually takes riders through what can only be described as the slums of Lahaina. Trash, feral cats and mounds of junk were the first sights we peered at from the train. ICK!
The kids enjoyed it though --- and that is the audience this is really geared toward anyway. The train makes two stops --- the longest is the gift shop or at least it seemed that way. The second stop was both sweet and cheesy. We were greeted by young hula dancers at a train station where all of the riders deboarded for a buffet and talent show. This part of the event felt rushed. It seemed we were hustled back on the train after quickly shoving food in our mouths. Regardless, our kids loved it --- did I mention that's who it's for anyway?

OK, honestly we didn't ride the train. But they had a nice big gift shop where we got our little guy a cool, cozy Sugar Cane Train sweatshirt...and on sale even.
5 stars for going to Maui without the kids. :)
