awwwww. what an elegant lil cupcake store! :D
cute flower shaped frostings...
every lil cupcake had a flower frosting on them, and they were just simply SO cute ...
lol. i have this silly habit that i make sure to get a cupcake/froyo/pastry fix whenever i'm in a new city... and even though i did make it to sweet mandy's, i have to say im more of a fan of bliss!
after shopping around the loop in chicago, we decided it was time for dessert... mmmmm! sugar bliss is a fantabulous choice! basically, it's like any other cupcake place in every other city to be...
staff was friendly, and the cupcakes were mighty scrumptious! i really like how they weren't super heavy with the frosting and the cupcake wasn't super sweet either ... you can get a mini for $1.10 or spoil your fat buns for a regular ... i mean, you're still in for the same guilt trip, so why pay more?
definitely a treat while you are in the Loop.
I wanted to write this review today because I am sooooo upset with the CUSTOMER service I did not receive @ Sugar Bliss today, I signed up for YELP just so I can tell whoever will read this about my experience today. I have used Sugar Bliss many times in the past for when my catering clients want cupcakes I always go to them.
Well I will not do that any longer!!!!! I purchased 15 RED VELVET CUPCAKES today and paid almost $60.00 for . By the time I got back to my restaurant which only took 10 minutes they were all on top of each other in the box and RUINED!
I called the store and asked if I brought them back could they refrost them for me. I even offered to pay extra for more frosting. Well they told me NO! Basically once they leave the store it is not their problem anymore! Then I called back and spoke to a MANAGER and she told me the same thing. She told me I could come back and purchase new ones! I asked if they could work with me and give me a discount and they said that is not their policy. All I do know is that I was not about to give SUGAR BLISS another $60.00 total of $120.00 for cupcakes. I will go home and bake them myself!
You would think in these times business would do anything to make sure they do not loose a customer!!!!
They have a good cupcake but I can tell you that I did some research and found RED VELVET cupcakes bigger and cheaper and just as good if not better than Sugar Bliss!!!!!
BTW get a better insert for the box so your OVERPRICED cupcakes do not roll around in the box!
People do you research there are many cupcakes out there, give them a try before going to SUGAR BLISS!
Okay, I finally made it in on a Sunday to complete my survey of all the good flavors (purely for research purposes, you understand). Yesterday's gems were the lemon coconut and the chocolate hazlnut. Oh man...beat me with a delicious stick. As much as I love chocolate, the lemon coconut trumps all. Maybe the best cupcake I've had anywhere. And the chocolate hazelnut was an A-, so this was a really fruitful trip.
And this time I was accompanied by my favorite cupcake expert, who concurs that they have a really good product. She holds Molly's as her favorite, but ranks Sugar Bliss very high. And even though, as I've mentioned, I am NOT a cupcake guy, I have to chalk up Sugar Bliss as the best in the city. Lemon coconut, chocolate hazelnut, chocolate coconut, chocolate peppermint, cinnamon carrot...just throw them at me and let me catch them in my mouth.
I want to go five stars based just on the product, but I have to say that their shop is not an inviting place to eat a cupcake. The decor and furniture are too austere, but more irksome is the staff's propensity for standing behind the counter and having borderline inappropriate conversations. This has happened on multiple occasions. I don't need to hear about the sordid and/or dumbass details of your weekends, ladies. Yesterday I distinctly heard the phrase "sex with a stranger" come wafting out of someone's mouth, and then I had to listen to some long, convoluted story about a cell phone battery, quasi-stalking some poor guy, knocking on some neighbor's door, walking home through a bad neighborhood...ugh. Shut up. We can hear you.

As promised, I have returned a few times to sample different varieties. All for the sake of thorough… Read more »
I went in expecting bliss, but all I got was mild happiness.
There was a wide selection of flavors, so I ordered a few different ones to savor over the next couple of days. Unfortunately, Sugar Bliss cupcakes don't take to being refrigerated for even an hour.
The cupcake that I had right away was pretty good -- I believe it was the banana. The frosting was flavorful, and the cupcake itself was like a more cakey version of banana bread. However, it wasn't worth $3.50.
The cupcakes that I refrigerated came out dry and a bit tough. I even ended up throwing one out.
Finally, the girl who helped me acted friendly, but she looked like she'd rather be dead than at work. I'm not sure if she'd just had a late night the night before, or if she was really going through a hard time. However, when the name of your workplace is Sugar Bliss, you really should try to smile.
I ordered the mini Red Velvet Cupcakes for a friend's birthday (I needed 12 for work). They were perfect! The staff was warm, friendly, and professional. They asked me if I wanted to look at them first and it was awesome. The minis were ok at $15. I think they are a little pricey, which is why I went with the minis. And it was my friend's b-day, which is a special treat. I wouldn't go there everyday, but for special occaisions, yes.
Cute display of regular and mini cupcakes! I had some Texas Red Velvet, Pure Chocolate, and Pecan Pie cupcakes. The Pure Chocolate had an intense dark chocolate flavor, which was amazing! They only had 3 seats near the windows so we had to find another place to enjoy the cupcakes.
Nothing is better than a 'lil Sugar Bliss. So great was my fortune when I stumbled upon this place on a rainy day with the grumps. This quaint little loop cupcakery spot houses some of the city's most scrumptious cupcakes.
Topped with creamy lumps of sweet, it's hard to not get more than one--that is until you find out how much it'll cost ya. I jumped in with the red velvet and smuggled out a cinnamon roll cupcake for the following day' s breakfast. Moist and sweet, just like I like 'em.
Cost me almost eight bucks, but that didn't register until the next day as i slurped the frosting off of my fingers. What was I on in today's economic times? Sugar, obviously.
At $45/dozen I don't really think these are anything too special. They're reliable, sure... The chocolate peanut butter, red velvet, carrot are my favorites... what do these have in common? They all have really great creamy icing. The icing is where it's at. Give me a cupcake top and forget the cake. Some of their "cake" is fairly forgettable in their cupcakes.
Come on, they're cupcakes, let's not pretend they're something life changing.
I was walking to Millennium Park & I just had to drop into this shop because it was so cute!
It was a bit pricey for cupcakes but wanted to try it so I was going to order a mini one. Unfortunately, there were no more mini red velvets so I thought what the heck, must be good for them to be out so I'll just eat a big one.
It was.....okay. The frosting was decent but the cupcake was dry. Oh well, cute little shop though!
I recently visited Chicago, and I came armed with a list of local bakeries to seek out for great cupcakes. It turned out that Sugar Bliss was the most conveniently located for us (we stayed at the Essex Inn), so we ended up walking there early one evening and getting cupcakes to save for later, after dinner.
We looked on the site before we went so we were familiar with the varieties offered that day, and there were several choices. We arrived at the bakery a good hour before they closed and they were low on a couple of varieties but they still had a really good selection. I chose the chocolate hazelnut and some kind of peanut butter type (topped with Reese's Pieces), and my husband had lemon coconut and chocolate cappuccino. It was around $15 for the 4 cupcakes, which is about average for specialty cupcakes. Yes, they're pricy when you compare them to, say, cupcakes you can get at the grocery store, but that's to be expected when you go to an independent/gourmet bakery.
We ended up eating a large dinner and not being able to eat our cupcakes until the next day, and didn't eat the last two until two days later. They stayed perfectly fresh in the box they came in and tasted amazing, even two days later!
I was a little leery of so much frosting when I first saw the cupcakes, as I'm not a huge fan of frosting in general and usually end up scraping some off of my cake. I was pleasantly surprised that Sugar Bliss's frosting wasn't sickly sweet or overly sugary (you know when you can taste the huge grainy chunks of sugar in a frosting? I hate that). All of the flavour in my two cupcakes was in the frosting (the cupcakes were just straight chocolate), so it's definitely a good thing that I liked it. I didn't notice anything outstanding about the cake in particular, but it was very moist and fresh.
The cupcakes were average sized, but filling, and rich enough that I definitely wouldn't want to eat more than one at any given time. Very satisfying! I really wish I could go back because I really want to try the Banana Banana, but unfortunately I missed out on that one. I would definitely be a regular customer if I lived in Chicago!
Heaven in a tiny paper liner.
That's all.
Ok, a little more.... the chocolate cupcake dough is the moistest, tastiest chocolate dough ever and the frostings are just right (from a girl who usually scrapes the frosting OFF my baked goods).
Plus they have PEANUT BUTTER frosting for the chocolate cupcakes that sounds too rich, but is just right!
Kudos to the red velvet cupcake engineers, too.
PS - I highly recommend the minis over the regular size cupcakes.
CUPCAKE EMERGENCY!!!!!
Yes, the birthday cupcakes of my BFF were STOLEN.
:::Pause for dramatic effect and gasping of the audience:::
So what am I to do? Drinks in two hours, cupcakes are clearly needed.
Sugar Bliss to the rescue.
:::Audience exclaims in relief...AHHHHHH:::
Yes, a smattering of their mini chocolate cuppie-cakes saved the day. Chocolate-chocolate = awesome. Toffee chocolate = Heath bar heaven.
You get the gist. Moist, perfectly adorable, delicious.
But yowza, $1.50 for a mini? You're killing me.
But for a BFF, that's how you roll. That's the only way to roll.
(P.S. This review was written under the influence of a half-bottle of champagne. Sorry.)
I'm new to Chicago and am on a cupcake tour, since where I'm from isn't plentiful in the cupcake department, unfortunately, since they're my favorite little treat.
Frosting is DELISH. I had a frosting shot, and a cupcake to go. The cake part was sort of dry, which I would maybe expect if it were end of day, but I popped in on a weekday, at around 1pmish. The frosting was the best part- homemade-tasting, buttercream yumminess! But for highclass cupcakes, I'd expect a more moist cake. If frosting is your number one though, by all means, go get some of those frosting shots!
I had Sugar Bliss Cupcakes way before their retail location opened so I haven't had the honor of stopping in yet.
But let's focus on the important aspect, the CUPCAKES!
We've ordered them for a couple of co-workers birthday's at my job and each time we are NOT disappointed.
From the super friendly delivery girl to the nice packaging to the cute-ness of each cupcake...they sure know how to lure people before they've even sunk their teeth into these delicious creations.
My personal fave is the red velvet! So smooth and not overly rich. Topped with a yummy light cream cheese frosting. mmm mmm goodness!
The vanilla milk chocolate cupcakes were also heaven in a paper cup!
Definitely worth checking out! Either delivery or check out the establishment!
There is not really much for me to say about this location.
I was on my way home from work and decided to stop by. It was a little after 6 pm. They had very little selection. The girl working behind the counter explained that they had ten different flavors a day. At this time there were only about four, and only one in the mini's. I asked the girl for her opinion on the remaining cupcakes. She recommended the Red Velvet, saying that it is one of the most popular. I went with it. It was good, but expensive. It was moist, and had a great flavor. However, I do not know if it was worth the price.
The décor of the location has nice colors. However, its starkness and lines leave it feeling cold. It's not a place that I would want to hang around, which is good because it is a grab it and go location. There is no seating. It's a good place to pick up dessert to take to a dinner party though.
Sugar Bliss is too close to my office. I limit myself to two minis a week, which is difficult because the tea that they carry (Two Leaves and a Bud) is also excellent and not something I've seen elsewhere. Am amused by the people surprised to pay $4.00 for a cupcake when even REGULAR coffee at S-Bux is $2.00, and all of the specialty drinks and pastries are well $3.00 and up. It's a TREAT. My favorite (after trying Red Velvet, Choc Cappuccino and Black & White) is the Black & White mini. I've never been a huge Red Velvet fan, but the SB mini version of that was very tasty - esp the cream cheese frosting. LOVE that you can get a shot of frosting - don't we all do this anyway when making our own? Great place, living proof that the cute little shop is alive and well in the City of Big Shoulders.
I stopped in here on a whim with some friends to sample the boutique cupcake trend that's going around. A cupcake here costs $3.50 ($3.90 after tax).
Let me repeat: I ate a $4.00 cupcake today.
Like a $5.00 shake, I expected it to be a damn fine cupcake. Alas! The cupcake was just a cupcake! A normal, everyday cupcake with lovingly applied frosting. I think I paid $4.00 for a designer cupcake, which, like designer handbags, are only expensive because of the brand name and pretty design; cheap handbags get the job done, just as my cupcakes and frosting out of a box gets the job done.
I don't regret eating the $4.00 cupcake (if only to satisfy my curiosity), but seriously - for $4.00 I can make at least a dozen cupcakes at home. This place will survive only as long as cupcakes are in vogue with people who don't know how to bake at home.
For some reason, whenever I'm in this area, I get some cupcakes despite how flavorless and dry the cake is. I think the only saving grace here is the frosting. So if you are one of those people who scrape off the frosting and eat only the cake, this is not the place for you. And, you can only imagine how dry they become the next day or day after that.
If you want to try those banana cupcakes that everyone raves about, you need to come in before noon. They go fast. But, once again, the cake is spongey and dry.
Cupcakes are one of my favorite things in the world. Sugar Bliss is Ok. They are a little expensive (almost $4 a cupcake). I had the strawberry shortcake cupcake and the red velvet. They were both decent. I prefer a sweeter and less buttery frosting. The cake portion was a little dry. The frosting also had just a hint of stale milk flavor to it.
That all being said, I really like their store decor. It is clean, and very cute. The girls working there were also very friendly and nice. The cupcakes themselves are very pretty.
Today is Papa B.'s birthday (all together now: Happy Birthday, Papa B.!). This year, the stars aligned and Darling Father's birthday falls on a Wednesday - the day he and I meet to share our noontime meal. This calls for celebration, no?
Cupcakes it is!
After checking my trusty Yelp, I head up Wabash and... despair! Sugar Bliss appears dark from the corner - are they closed? I'm about to bail when I glance inside. Oh! Not closed - just brown walls. I like brown. In I go.
Now, I've had mini cupcakes before and yeah, I thought I was over it. They are just small cupcakes.... normal cupcakes, but smaller. Yawn, right? WRONG! The mini cupcakes at Sugar Bliss are exact replicas of their larger brethren. The big Lemon Drop cupcake has a big yellow icing-flower on top; the small Lemon Drop cupcake has a small one. So cute! Widdle Bay-bees! I must have them!
I carefully select 6 mini cupcakes. My treasures are nicely boxed up and I'm on my way.
Fast forward two hours and I'm at lunch with my Dad:
1. The cupcakes were very well-packaged! No flopping or smooshing. All look exactly as delectable as they did at the store.
2. These cupcakes are more than merely pretty - they are delicious! The cake part is very moist and the icing (note: I'm an icing girl) is so rich and sweet. I could eat a vat of it.
3. As usual, my eyes were bigger than my stomach. Two baby cupcakes was all I could eat (Darling Father had just one!), no worries, the extras made me even more well-loved amongst my coworkers.
DAMN, DAMN, DAMN! I can't have this! I cannot have Sugar Bliss this close to my new job. NOOO! There go my hips and there goes my manners as I sit here at my desk, pondering if I should surreptitiously chew on the Red Velvet cupcake paper wrapper like I used to do when I was 12 and wanted to prolong my cupcake nirvana. Oh, you didn't do that? Okay, well, now you know my embarrassing secret.
I am a sucker for cupcakes. Hell, you could make smoked eel in cupcake form and I would eat it. I am here to tell you that this Red Velvet was tasty, moist and the cream cheese frosting was near perfection. (I say "near" because my favorite R.V. cupcake resides at another bakery near and dear to my heart.)
I opted for the "Texas Red Velvet" over a variety of other flavors including among others Cinnamon Carrot, Strawberry Dream, Black & White, Chocolate Milk Chocolate. Oh, man I am in trouble.....butt-wise and wallet-wise. $3.50 for a 5 bite cupcake is a bit much but, hey, that Wabash/Randolph rent has got to be high.
Don't worry, Sugar Bliss - I'll be back again and again and again. The lemon drop cupcake is calling my name.........
I don't really see the love of the red velvet cupcake--mine was dry and the least interesting of all the flavors we sampled. I really liked their nice strong flavors, subtle icings... My favorite: the banana. We need more special stuff like this downtown.
And let me add that their hours ROCK!
My only downer is that the cupcakes can tip really easily within the box. I BABIED mine until I got home and they still had tipped over.
Do you like chocolate cupcakes with chocolate frosting? Of COURSE you do! So motor down to Sugar Bliss post haste to indulge in a Pure Chocolate cupcake - Dark chocolate cake with rich dark chocolate buttercream. You will not experience a better cupcake, in this world or the next.
Sugar Bliss is, of course, a full service cupcake provider, but all other varieties, while presumably excellent, pale in comparison to the multisensory overload that is Pure Chocolate.
Goes well with bourbon, too.
Yay for there being a bakery downtown-- their cupcakes are delicious. The cake part isn't overly sweet, and they make an excellent cream cheese frosting as well as terrific butter cream.
I like that they have unique flavors (pb and j, oreo) along with classics. I like the pretty flower designs made of frosting on each of the cupcakes. I like that they call their muffins "breakfast cupcakes"-- thanks for being honest, Sugar Bliss. And I love that they have mini-cupcakes that let you enjoy a whole lot of flavors, for not a whole lot of guilt.
The only bad part is that when they run out of a flavor, it seems like they don't make more-- they're just done for the day. Also, these cupcakes are pricier than others, however the convenience of being able to find a freshly made cupcake downtown might just make up for it.
My first visit to Sugar Bliss was fantastic. I purchased three mini's and the cake was moist and the frosting to die for. I went about once a week for a month to buy a couple of mini's. After that I took a friend and we bought two regular size cupcakes. I was amazed because they tasted totally different. They were hard and dry. The frosting was still great but other than that I was dissapointed. Today I sent a freind in to buy me two mini's. My chocolate/dark chocolate was pretty good, but the red velvet again was hard and dry. I think I am "over" the whole sugar bliss kick that I was on. it was nice while it lasted but like some of the other posts I can make my own cupcakes at home for $4.00. Plus I hear Swirls on Belden tastes better.
really want to bring this down to 1 star after this experience...
but the cupcakes remain yummy and all other experiences have been good.
scene:
it's a torrential downpour and i "need" to get these halloween treats cakes for my niece and nephew. $15 for a dozen mini's. i want to tack on (2) more for good measure. a dozen fits nicely in a box...cool......
convo between cupcake gal and myself:
gal : i can't put the other (2) in a box because the box holds (4).
me: um ok, i just need (2) more though.
gal: *glare* read: i refuse to give you this box unless you order (4) cupcakes.
me: *harder glare* read: i don't need (2) more cupcakes.
gal: well... the best i can do is put them into a flat bottom bag
me: will that be secure? it's coming down pretty hard out there!
gal: *glare #2*
ok, i get it. give me the damn bag. she puts the box of a dozen and bag of (2) into a big plastic bag. i ask for an add'l bag knowing that the bag will get extremely drenched when walking back to the office i was hoping to change the bag after my trek and before my drive to the 'burbs.
gal: another bag? what for?
me: um, it's POURING outside. i just need extra security for these cupcakes.
gal: um *glare* sure...
boxes and bags are hot commodities at sugar bliss. you get free cupcakes with every box/bag.

still keeping this at 4 stars with a caveat...
ok, so 2 visits in 1 week to a cupcake shop shouldn't… Read more »
overpriced? probably.
delicious? definitely.
I've been meaning to go and try the lemon drop cupcake- but i had the carrot cupcake and the chocolate coconut and they were perfect.
I really can't comment too much on the comparison factor that everyone else does, but here's what I can say about Sugar Bliss:
Two words: mini cupcakes. I've had almost all the flavors - hey with minis you can have more than one with the same amount of guilt, right? I love them all, but the pure choc is da bomb! The cake is moist and they have just the right amount of frosting.
One complaint: they took my fave flavor (choc caramel) off the menu!
In.....A.....Cupcake.....Trance....
I swear, those flowers that Sugar Bliss pipes ontop of their cupcakes puts me in a daze! Sugar Bliss is another great cupcake spot in the Capital of Cupcakes: Chicago. Want Obama cupcakes? Sugar Bliss can do them! I'm not exactly sure what "Obama cupcakes" entail but the person in front of me at the store was gushing over how great they were.
The taste of these cupcakes is almost on-par with other places like Swirlz, SMB's, etc. I wouldn't give Sugar Bliss the coveted top spot (that belongs to Molly's!) but I will say that their cupcakes taste delicious. The cake part is sometimes dry but the icing more than makes up for it.
Try Sugar Bliss for yourself and compare them to your favs!
Just happened to stumble here after I had my fast-food lunch and we decide to get a bite of dessert here. There was quite a line here already, and it was just lunch time. I decided to get 2 mini's ($1.50/each) instead of a regular sized cupcake ($3.50) because I wasn't very hungry since I had just had lunch. I got the toffee chocolate one and a strawberry one. Both were delicious and moist! And I was very surprised that the butter-cream was not heavy but very light. I've had cupcakes from Sprinkles before, that that butter-cream was way to heavy and borderline disgusting. But not at Sugar Bliss!
We also got a mini-cupcake dozen and the box they put it in has holders inside it - so the cupcakes will not roll around or fall out of place and get messed up with the other cupcakes, Very cute flower design too! Everyone kept ordered the red velvet cupcake so it must be good..I should have gotten one of these too!
I had the fuzzy navel cupcake here- the frosting was fine (I don't care for much frosting other than cream cheese or whipped cream), the haribo peach gummi decor was stale, but the peach cake- oh my! So moist and delicious. Overall a very satisfying cupcake without tasting like it was made from a mix, would definitely eat it again.
Two complaints. 1. charging $2.25 for bottled water. WHAT? 2. The seats rejected my butt. I sat down, my butt started sliding off the slippery surface and the spring loaded seat essentially pushed me off! GAH! Design flaw!
Sugar Bliss is A-OK. But I like Molly's Cupcakes (in Lakeview area) 100 times better...plus Molly's is priced better than here. Sugar Bliss' regular cupcakes are priced like Molly's prices their specialty or filled cupcakes. However, this is a downtown location so that may attribute to the inflated prices.
The red velvet cupcake is great...this is usually not my fave, but I really enjoy it here!
Hazelnut and hazelnut chocolate flavored anything is my favorite - but I thought their hazelnut cupcake wasn't that fab...so I was a little disappointed.
Overall the cupcakes are still great...moist and fluffy, and their frosting is better than I could make at home.
On different days they have different cupcakes available - they have a little take-home chart/flyer so you can plan your visits. :)
You would think employees working in a cupcake store would be happy and friendly. When I walked in, there was no greeting, no other patrons in there, and the 3 or 4 girls behind the counter didn't crack a smile. Maybe they had their fill of cupcakes for the day and were crashing from a sugar high...who knows.
There is very minimal seating in here, just an FYI. I think like 3 people can sit down or something.
I love me some cupcakes and their red velvet ones were awesome.
The cream cheese frosting was amazing..love it!!!
The chocolate cupcake w/ coconut and cream cheese frosting was
pretty darn yummy too!!!!
I'll definitely be back.
I am on a mission to try all cupcake bakeries in the city of Chicago. My 2nd stop was at Sugar Bliss. Unfortunately I went on a Sunday night right before they were closing. I believe that if a bakery is that good that their cupcakes should taste good at any time. However, I was slightly wrong.
I bought a selection, but chocolate cupcake w/ chocolate frosting is my gold standard for all bakeries. The cake itself was pretty good, not super-moist and the outside was a little harder, but that could be that it was the end of the day. The frosting was smooth and the amount was substantial. Overall a good solid cupcake but nothing to write home about.
As a matter of fact, that's how I felt about all of the cupcakes that I bought. I probably will be back to give it a try when more variety is available and also because they are conveniently located near my home.
Monday's suck. Seriously, there are very few redeeming qualities about a Monday. For some reason that I can't put my finger on, this Monday has been particularly crappy. I thought that perhaps a cupcake (or two) would cheer me up.
I took a walk over to Sugar Bliss and decided to try the red velvet and black and white cupcakes. I was given them in a nice little box built for two cupcakes complete with inserts so that they would stay in place and look pretty when I got them back to my office.
Cream cheese frosting is one of the few amazing things in life so I started with the red velvet cupcake. Two stars... max. Kinda dry and the frosting was just ok. I personally think my mom's cream cheese frosting is way better. Granted, I still ate the cupcake though. About 30 minutes later though I was still unsatisfied with my cupcake experience. I decided to break out the black and white cupcake.
Now there's a cupcake. The cake was moist and chocolaty and the frosting just melted in my mouth. So freakin good. That was a 5 star cupcake. It's kind of a shame I wasted my money (and calories) on the red velvet one. The black and white cupcake is far superior. I'd go back for one of those.
Size of the cupcakes is pretty good. Not huge but not too small either (although they do have mini-cupcakes). I also liked the amount of frosting they used. It wasn't overpowering like some places. They're also very pretty.
So minus a star for the cupcake I didn't like but I'm still a fan.
Yum!
Let's break down my stars:
+1 Star for large flavor selection with a printed calendar so you know when to find your favorite. Bonus for keeping the stock refreshed through the day.
+1 Star for one flavor being Pumpkin Patch as I LOVE pumpkin flavored anything, and it's available year-round! I love finding pumpkin cupcakes in the summer. (I also love that Chocolate Peppermint is available year-round too)
+1 Star for offering Mini versions for every daily flavor. This way I can have two flavors and not feel bad at all. (Plus, two minis are less than one full-size.)
+1 Star for the frosting. Whether it's on the cupcakes in the shape of flower petals or in a frosting shot for $1, it's yummy.
All in all, I love the cupcakes, but it's not 5 stars for me because the full-size cupcake is too expensive---$3.50 is too much for a basic cupcake. It is bigger than a standard Molly cupcake, but not worthy of nearly twice the price.
It's always a treat for me while in the Loop to pop into Sugar Bliss.
I don't even remember how I stumbled upon Sugar Bliss on the way to the movie theater, but I was so happy to find that they were serving pumpkin cupcakes in the middle of summer! I hate it when places only have pumpkin in the fall because it's "seasonal" - I want pumpkin YEAR ROUND!
There was quite a lot of frosting, and they were a little pricey, but I guess that's just become standard for cupcakes in Chicago. If you want a quick sweet treat downtown, stop by Sugar Bliss!
So here I am sitting on a long flight from Chicago to San Francisco CA. After an hour nap and a few boring pages of a new book I decide to spark a convo with the lady next to me. I love the two hour friendships one can find on a plane.
She is a Chinese women in here mid 50's and loves too talk. The conversations is quickly directed to her daughters cupcake shop, "Sugar Bliss". We decide to spend the $12.99 to get the Internet on the plane so we can check out the website and other media the place has gotten.
Everything on the menu looked so good!! Especially the Red Velvet with cream cheese icing. At the end of our adventure the kind women gives me one of a dozen cupcakes she has brought for the rest of her family to try. IT WAS AMAZING!!!!!!! I just lived in NYC for the last 3 years of my life and I know a cupcake. MAGNOLIA HAS GOT NOTHING ON SUGAR BLISS!!!!
KEEP DOING WHAT YOU DO!
I like to think of myself as a cupcake connoisseur and while tasty these cupcakes lacked that wow factor.
Damn you indecisiveness! I couldn't decide what type of cupcake to buy so I went with 3 minis (chocolate hazelnut, black and white, and chocolate mint) instead. Here's why SB gets 3 stars:
* Packaging. My minis were placed in a mini plastic shopping bag. Not only are plastic bags environmentally unfriendly, they require that I walk with a very steady hand so as not to tip the cupcakes over and make a mess. Please get some boxes, for the price I'm paying you can afford it.
* Price. Minis are $1.50 each, my 3 ran me $5.02 including tax which I felt was steep; similar minis at Molly's run only $1 per. I didn't feel the cute little flower of frosting was worth an extra $.50 each.
*All regular cupcakes are $3.50 no matter how basic, at Molly's center-filled are $3.50, the basic Molly's are $2. I don't mind that they don't do center-filled cupcakes, I just don't feel jazzed up frosting is worth $1.50 more (that could almost by me a whole second cupcake!).
*Variety. I like the rotating flavors of cupcakes at Sugar Bliss. Keeping them on a schedule ensures I know when I can score a flavor favorite.
* Appearance. The cupcakes are cute, they all have little frosting flowers on top. While cute, the decor lacks creativity; It would be nice to see a little more decoration variety, maybe then it would be easier to visually differentiate flavors.
*Taste. The buttercream was fantastic, a perfect balance of butter and sugar. All three cupcakes were tasty, the Black and White being my favorite. I found the Chocolate Hazelnut to be too subtle in the flavor department. The cake portion seemed moist, however the majority of 2 of my minis stuck to the wrapper so I was forced to pick the cake off of it; I'm not sure what causes this, but it was annoying.
Bottom line: Decent cupcakes, but not my favorites. If I'm in the Loop and having a cupcake craving I'd pop in, but only for a full size cupcake they seem like the better deal.
P.S. From other reviews I got the impression that service is spotty. To be perfectly candid I didn't notice, but that was only because I was mesmerized by the display case full of cupcakes.
I really do make the best cupcakes in the world!
Whenever I see this place I get a mini cupcake to taste, never a whole. I figured be good, eat a mini. Well I decided to purcahse 6 whole cupcakes for a small dinner with my parents. and well, I paid what, $3+ for each cupcake only for my parents to say "Your cupcakes are way better. These are too dry." Are they a little too dry, compared to what I make yes just a little. But I still think they are delish. My parents however, will no longer be getting $3+ cupcakes.
