Loved the German Chocolate Cake! I decided to drive all the way out to San Francisco (this is a huge thing for me) just for this cake. And it was worth it!
I have had vegan dessert before, and the ones I have tried tend to be dry. But oh no. This cake didn't just look beautiful and pack an enormous amount of flavor, but it was so0o0o0o moist. Yummy! The few days after we first ordered the cake we heated it in the microwave for 20 seconds, and it tasted like heaven.
I am definitely considering using her for my wedding cake and cupcakes!
Not to mention, she is super sweet, great at responding to e-mails, and fit me into her schedule for my cake at very limited notice.
Thank you! yum yum yum! I will be getting the Peppermint Patty cake for Christmas, and probably the Apple Pie or Snicker-doodle cake for Thanksgiving.
Can't wait!
Once again Sugar Beet Sweets donated their time and baked goods to the S.F. Vegan Bake sale to raise money for SaveaBunny. No yeasted donuts this time, but still awesome cinnamon rolls and 3 flavors of brownies to choose from... SBS is consistently awesome!
I just love sweets and cupcake with frosting and so... I love Sugar Beat Sweets! They offer mouth watering, fudgy, moist cupcakes that will make you say "Mmmmmmmmmh, taste so good!" If you feel stressed, not only chocolates but cupcakes are the way to go...
Shokola! Cupcakes! Sugar Beat takes the cake! They make really nice moist and yummy cakes. Found out from my sister that this is where she's gonna get treats for her wedding reception. Can't wait!
I am a wedding planner and I recommended Sugar Beat Sweets to my client for their wedding. Everyone loved the cupcakes. We had the Snickerdoodle, Citrus Dreamsicle, Peppermint Patty and Peanut Butter flavors. They have a great team. It was very easy to work with Melisser.
Delicious cupcakes, high fives ladies!
Oh, WAIT, this is MELISSER's bakery? OMG. You don't know me, but I've heard sooooo much about you, you have no idea.
First of all, I know that I could not stop scarfing your little mini cupcake thingies at my friend Chris's BDay/Halloween party. I think there were peanut butter ones, and something else nutty and chocolatey. First I ate a lady-like-ish amount off the pretty platter in the living room, then I found where she was hiding the box, and ate a few gory fistfuls of them every time I could think of an excuse to walk by.
Of course, I was full by the time we cut the cake, so we took it to go, and OH WOW was it great the next day. I nuked it a little to take the chill off, and the frosting melted, but STILL. It was chocolate cake with orange frosting. I say unto you again, OMG. O.M.G.!!!
Totally of no consequence that it was vegan. I mean, that's nice and everything, and it'll be useful because I love my vegans? But if it ain't delicious, I really don't care what's in it. Your shit is the BOMB. THE BOMB, I tells ya. And also pretty.
I'm a recent transplant to the San Francisco Bay Area, and it's hard for me not to get bowled over by the sheer mass of available vegan baked goods. However, after a bit of time to get familiar with my options, I'm finding it increasingly rare that I find a vegan baked good that I don't feel like I could make a better version myself. SugarBeatSweets are better than I can make myself. Seriously, SBS knows from fine vegan baking.
In addition, SBS puts their money where their mouth is and supports animal rights and welfare causes such as the Yes on Prop 2 campaign and Farm Sanctuary, which I like to see.
I've sampled a variety of SBS baked goods (from a wedding cake to several types of cupcakes), and they have all been excellent. The frosting is light and fluffy and won't leave that gross lardy greasy mouth feel that so many frostings do. The cakes are always light and delicate and full of flavour.
Every vegan (hell, every person) in the Bay Area should be beating down the door at SBS HQ and clamouring for baked goods for weddings, debutante balls, birthdays, bar/bat mitzvahs, and getting-out-of-prison shindigs.
Sugar Beat Sweets' creations are what vegan dreams are made of! I can honestly say that Melisser's cupcakes are just as good, if not better, than any non-vegan specialty cupcake you will find here or in NYC. Even my non-vegan, cupcake connoisseur co-worker agreed.
I am really bummed that Sugar Beat Sweets are no longer available daily at any local restaurants, but Melisser is very friendly and accommodating when it comes to ordering direct. Her prices are quite reasonable and there is a large selection of flavors and frostings to choose from. I will definitely be ordering from them for all my future catering needs - or just when I am fiending for some vegan baked goods. Even armed with the book "Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World", my creations pale to SBS's.
And in the mean time, if you can't bring yourself to place an order, make sure to attend some of the pro-animal fundraisers that are catered by Sugar Beat Sweets - do some good and eat a cupcake at the same time!
Sugar Beat Sweets makes the most moist vegan cake I've ever had. Back when she baked for the cafe that shall not be named, I'd go in with friends and we'd each get a slice of cake (consuming more than half the cake in the case). This experience provoked me to get a special-order cake, which was just as great.
I wish the cupcakes were available in coffee shops and cafes all over -- kind of like People's Donuts, except tasty (and less artery-clogging, I hope? probably not). I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
And... seriously, how does San Francisco not have a vegan bakery? This needs to happen. Support Sugar Beat and order a cake... so maybe someday they can expand and rule the bay. We need more vegan-owned businesses around here.
I am a huge cupcake connoisseur and I am always a bit weary about trying out vegan desserts. In theory it seems like they will be fine, I mean it's mostly just sugar and flour, but somehow the consistency always seems a bit off.
Which is why I was pleasantly surprised with the Vanilla Peanut Butter Caramel Cupcake I got the other day at the "Bazaar Bizarre" in Golden Gate Park. It looked good, the cake was soft and moist, and the frosting was unbelievably delicious!
They don't have a store so keep an eye out for these cupcakes at SF events!
I've actually never tried Sugar Beat Sweets, but the owner/founder is gorgeous! (i know that's unncecessary, but wow!)
I hear a cafe in the North Beach area will be carrying these treats. I forgot which cafe but when I find out, I will eat them every day!
Sugar Beat Sweets is a brand new, all vegan, woman owned bakery that uses fair trade, organic and local ingredients whenever possible. Not only is it all of that shit which makes me feel warm and fuzzy and so much better than you but also, it's FUCKING DELICIOUS. I'm telling you, if I had to lie through my teeth one more time about how most vegan goods are just as good as their butter and dairy filled counterparts, I would be forced to stick my head in an oven. To eat the cake that's inside. I ain't going nowhere, bitches! But also, I would continue to feel bad about lying and cheated that there aren't that many equally delicious dessert offerings for us vegans. HOWEVER, with the advent of Sugar Beat Sweets and their amazing cakes, cupcakes, cookies and more, I no longer have to lie! About vegan baked goods! I will continue to lie about everything else! The sweet, sweet baked goods from SBS are RIDICULOUS. My birthday cake this year came from them and even my father who prefers his food made with pig's blood and baby tears was blown away. He actually thought I was cheating at being vegan (that's my favorite, like it's some fad diet that I get to be "bad" about on the weekends or some shit. GOD I REALLY HATE THAT) and ordered a non-vegan cake. I think he was more proud than the day I graduated college. When I told him it was vegan, he was visibly disappointed and drowned his sorrows in two more slices. I actually think that cake had some special powers because since then my dad has been less weird about my veganism (pronounced, "vay-gun-ism") and more weird about the fact that my life is going nowhere and I'm dead broke and will wind up dead in a gutter, half eaten by wolves. Also, that would kinda rule because it would mean that San Francisco would be overrun by wolves and they are my people. I'm pretty sure we would be good friends before they ate me.
Sugar Beat Sweets doesn't have a store front (YET! GIVE THEM LOTS OF MONEY SO THAT I CAN CLIMB INSIDE THEIR PASTRY CASE!) so you have to custom order through their website. The prices are very reasonable when you consider the quality of the ingredients and the fact that every order is custom so you can get really specific. My favorite flavors are PB&J, Peanut Butter Cup and Lemon Curd but I highly doubt you can go wrong. I might even try to marry my dog soon so that I can have a wedding cake made in my own LIFE SIZED image, which I hear is huge in the Wedding biz right now. I will submit this photo: http://static.px.yelp.... and if the cake doesn't look exactly like me, I WILL LOSE MY SHIT!!! Also, I want locks of my own hair to be used and I am the only one who gets to eat it (the locks of my own hair goes a long way to ensuring that happens).
In short, Sugar Beat Sweets is what I've been waiting for my whole vegan life and I can't wait to celebrate my birthday six more times this year, by the time 2009 comes, I will be 37 years-old and 500 pounds and LOVING EVERY SUPER FAT MOMENT OF IT! Oh also, if you have a celebration and order something from SBS, please to invite me, I give great head! I mean, I will be your friend forever! I mean, whatever connects my mouth with that cake! Seriously, you need someone to vacuum your house? Naked? What?
My (awesome) boyfriend got me a surprise cake from SBS for my birthday last month. A double layer chocolate cake with mint icing. Holy crap! The cake was moist and delicious, you could tell it had been made fresh that day. All my guests loved it just as much as I did (even if I only saved them scraps). Melisser's cakes/cupcakes are as good as it gets. Save yourself from the Safeway cakes and be sure and hire her for your next birthday/wedding/bar mitzvah/whatever. Even if you're not vegan you'll still feel good knowing your cake was made with organic/local ingredients!
Thanks SBS for doing our wedding cupcakes! They were so delicious, an absolute hit! Luckily, we managed to save one in the freezer for that one year anniversary thingy. :o) Thanks again!
Snickerdoodle cupcake = very good!!!
Yummo!
i love a good cupcake, and that is what sbs sells. only four stars cuz its really hard to find these, but if you do, make sure to get a few! we had the choc pb which was everything i hoped it would be! moist and fluffy cake with the perfect amount of heavenly pb frosting, and we got a friend the orange cremesicle which she loved! hope that they will be easier to find at some point, cuz people will go crazy for em!
i ordered 36 mini cupcakes for my friend's birthday party, they where a HUGE success! every one LOVED them, it was the perfect birthday present (in stead of bringing a big cake)
now they are also for sale at Rainbow foods, it cant get any better!
I ordered the Strawberry Shortcake for my July 2008 birthday. It was delicious! She was great! She wrote Happy Birthday and my name and put fresh strawberries for no extra charge. We picked it up from the North Beach vegan cafe - I can't remember their name - and then took it to Andalu where I had a big birthday party reservation. I'm not vegan but lactose intolerant, so many of the people eating were not vegan but they still loved the cake! You couldn't really tell that it was vegan! It was about $50 for a 9 inch cake that fed about 15 people. I think she delivers for only $5 or so in SF. I paid by check.
The first time I had the pleasure of biting into one of Melissa's sweet treats, I couldn't believe what I was tasting. Can you say, "The Perfect Cupcake?!" So very delicious. I can't wait til she has a store front bakery so that I can walk in any day of the week and just start buying boxes full of her wonderful creations.
after tasting her adorable and delectable mini cupcakes at various animal rights/vegetarian parties around town i knew i had to get some sugar beat sweets for the party i threw last weekend. melisser was so nice and helpful and didn't even get mad when i changed my order at the last minute. great pricing too. the cupcakes were AMAZING. driving away after picking them up my husband and i couldn't help but sample one as the smell permeated our car. and then we thought we might as well try one of the other flavor. and then another one just to be sure it wasn't a fluke. the people at the damn party should just be glad ANY cupcakes showed up. i have decided for my birthday to order just a VAT of her peanut butter frosting to swim in. the cakes are moist and tender like a good cupcake should be--it makes me proud to be a vegan (unlike certain other local vegan baked goods). can't wait until there is a sugar beat sweets bakery. until then, can't wait for my next order.
