I make it a point to try and never buy produce at the grocery store unless I am feeling extremely lazy or I don't have another option.  Sue's is one of the few produce markets I often frequent.  I would agree with the other posts, sue's is not always the cheapest but it's fresh and if you play your cards right you can get some really good deals.

I usually stick with certain veggies (almost never fruits because I know I can get them cheaper other places) but sometimes I delve into the fridges of local cheese and yogurt.  The quality of product they sell here is great and their produce lasts ridiculously long periods of time.  I visit Sue's on an almost weekly basis at times and their produce is a lot better than some of the other places in the area.  I can usually leave here with two huge bags of fresh veggies and only spend around 12 dollars.

If you buy all your produce at trader joes, or whole foods make a better choice and try out sues.  Be sure to bring cash though as they do not take cards.

I wouldn't be buying from here if I had a family to feed. BUT if I had a family to feed, I also wouldn't be living in Rittenhouse square. So it works out.

I don't think it's super cheap, but it's cheaper than going to Whole Foods which is far away, or paying for a cab to go elsewhere.

I think it's the perfect mix of fresh, inexpensive, and gourmet.

My faves about this place:
-walking distance
-can buy as little as you need--key for single people
-they have goguma!
-they have fresh produce! and it's better than the crap they have for produce at TJ
-i LOVE the little mozarella they have (Claudios) it's most amazing and I've had a lot of fresh mozz in NYC
-the cashier lady is super nice!
- they carry leeks!

A warning to the owners of Sue's Produce Market:

Produce this fresh and delicious should not be this cheap.  The market is obviously some sort of front for illegal activities.  As soon as I figure out what it is you're up to, you are in deep trouble.  Expect a visit from the FBI.

Good produce when in a pinch or on the way home.  Like everyone else stated the prices fall somewhere in the middle.  Some things seem pretty cheap such as a bag of spring mix but then in season fruit may be $1 a piece which seems high.  I think it is cheaper than Rittenhouse Market.  They have a decent mix of produce, you can probably find what you need.  It is a tight, little store so be ready to throw some 'bos if picking something up after work.

I frequent this cash only market at least once a week. The owners are friendly and welcoming.

In the cold January months when fresh fruit was hard to come by at a good price, I craved the super-sized asian pears from Sue's. I love being surprised by new in season exotic fruit that they keep near the front of the store and now that it's summer there's always a wide array of fruits & vegetables to choose from.

On a less healthy note, they carry Claudio's mozzarella & purchase Sarcone's bread daily (except for Monday's when Sarcone's is closed).

I was tipped off by another yelper that Sue's Produce now has that most elusive of summer fruits, the black velvet apricot. I fantasized about it all the way there.

Once at Sue's I was snapped out of my reverie by a bustling, noisy crowd and an impatient cashier who was not unlike the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld. Luckily, I had cash on hand (no credit cards here) although it took me a while to fish it out of my bag. And oddly, his sighing and rolling of eyes did nothing to expedite my search for exact change. That usually works so well...

As best I can tell, the prices are fair in relation to the quality of the product which is outstanding. I made it out of there with the coveted black velvets, a couple of mango nectarines, and the best sour cherries I've ever tasted.

Really awesome. Why I come here:
1) Super convenient location
2) Great selection of fresh produce. I like their local options of fruits and veg
3) Reasonably priced. I would not call this place cheap...unless perhaps you're only used to shopping at Whole Foods. Some e.g. of price points - navel oranges 2 for a dollar, $2 per lb apples, peaches 75 cents each

Yogurt, cheeses, tofu, apple cider...haven't explored the fridges in detail but that's what I've seen. I'm super thankful for Sue's!

The have "Black Velvet" apricots (Apriums/Pluots) - a succulent cross between plum and apricot, this summer.

Also Mango Nectarines.

They are CASH ONLY.

Don't forget to check out the refrigerator case WAY in the back where they stock Claudio's fresh mozzarella - straight from South Philly.  YUM!!!!

Okay, so Sue has produce. People, seriously, this isn't the greatest place on earth. It's just pick-thru produce. And the prices aren't even that great.

The only good thing is the location. Most folks in Center City have few options for produce. I just don't think this place is worth the hype.

Cash only, open til 7 on weekdays, best place to get stock up on your fruits and veggies.  Wideranging and reliable supply of fresh herbs, all for only a $1 a bunch.

They're frequently stocked with amazing fresh mozzarella that you have to grab early in the day on weekends...Not sure if the mozzarella they carry comes from Claudio's in the Italian market but it always melts and in your mouth and tastes freshly made.

The fruit and veggies vary in price, quality and tastiness based on the season, but they're generally better and cheaper than what you'd find at rittenhouse market or whole foods, and they stock a lot more varieties than your trader joes.

It's family run, and the owners occasionally bring in exciting exotic fruits you'll never see elsewhere, usually near the register.  On occasion, they've had rambutans, mangosteens, rainier cherries and gooseberries and superlong twisty beans (i forgot what they were called)...so its worth checking in often and asking what's new or good.  John and Michelle get high props for staying friendly even on hectic days when the line extends through half the store.

The variety of produce and knowlegable friendly staff at Sue's makes keeps meals from getting to boring or carnivorous.  In all my years living in philly (about 5 now), this is one of the few places i have always freqented and continue to go religiously.  Without this place, I probably would go on major fruit and flavor withdrawl living in the city.

Story time:

I waited in the typically long (but fast moving) rush-hour line at Sue's Produce with my bag of assorted goodies, only to realize my cash situation was low.  Of course, this was after the cashier had already rung me up.  I was $3.65 short, and offered to put back some items to lower my total.  The cashier told me to take my groceries and to bring the balance in cash when I returned.

This is the type of service I got as a frequent shopper (I go to Sue's weekly), but I expect they would do the same for anyone.  Super friendly and helpful, a real neighborhood gem.

As for the produce, there is a wonderful variety, it's well priced for Center city, and mostly fresh (although some of the things don't get turned over very often).  My only minor complaint is how cramped it is, especially right around closing.

The only place I buy fresh produce in the city. Their prices are insanely cheap, selection is amazing. If you go around the evening rush be prepared to wait in a long line. They even have insanely cheap fresh mozz and feta. Last night I bought a pound of tomatoes, a bunch of bell peppers, garlic, onions, cherry tomatoes,  jalapenos, limes, and fresh herbs and it came out to all of about  $14.

Cash only.

I like my produce.
I like it super fresh.
I like it cheap.

Sue's fits the bill on all three counts.  All the Reviews are true. I hate being redundant - but Sue's my main supplier for the majority of my meals and I owe her thanks.

I discovered Sue's about 6 years ago - I was told a lot of chefs at nearby restaurants use Sue's as a back-up when they need last minute items -  Thankfully, it's two shakes from my work (but oh-so-far from home), so I always do a lunch jaunt to get 3 limes for $1, or a big bag of baby spinach for $2.50 a pound - or a little batch of fresh herbs (anything you want for just a buck!) It's the one place where they don't charge you 4 dollars for an avocado.

Try and maneuver the crowds, the moms that bring their humong-o strollers, and the employees that restock the shelves almost every hour in this narrow little store that you can almost miss while you stroll down 18th between Sansom and Chestnut. It's Cash only - so come prepared.

The place is a veritable feast of freshness...  Fruits, daily specials, nuts and dry goods in the front, condiments, baked goods and dairy in the middle, while veggies, cheeses and gourmet offerings (hummous, spreads, etc) round it up in the back.  Go early in the morning so you can inspect and savor at your leisure and to your heart's content.

This is my favorite place to get produce in the city.  The prices are decent and the produce is ALWAYS fresh!

I love their selection of nuts/dried fruits, they carry my favorite apple (the Pink Lady), I truly cannot complain about a thing here.

They don't take credit/debit cards, so be prepared with cash.

Sue's is fantastic. I make an almost-daily stop. Inexpensive and fresh produce (the local apple section is the best), plus lots of local products: milk, jams, dried fruits and nuts. The prices are fair and the quality top-notch. The owners are experts in everything they stock and are often heard answering questions about seasonality of different produce and how to prep it.

It's a tiny little space and is often crammed with shoppers, but is well worth wading through the crowd. Besides, that's sometimes half the fun. The owners know all their regulars and treat them like family. It's fun to listen to the mini-conversations they have with everyone in the check-out line.

Dear Sue, I want to lick you in the face. How can I ask for more than a great selection of cheap fruits and vegetables, herb bunches, dried nuts and fruits, local yogurt and speedy service? Well, a location closer to my home or work would be nice (I only stop in when I'm downtown) and I'd love to know if/what of the produce selection was local. Credit card acceptance would be nice, too. Don't worry Sue, none of these "problems" lessen my love for you!

I live a block from the Italian Market, and this is still my go-to for all of my produce.  Their produce is mostly excellent, and their breads, cheeses, etc. are timesavers if you don't want to bother with across the street Dibruno's.  There's a lot packed into this tiny place.  Prices are very competitive, and I know for a fact that they'll pass on savings from their distributors, even if no one else in town has the price.  Local foods are clearly marked, and frequently enjoy a healthy discount.

Don't let the crowd or the lines fool you, they move fast; the previous reviewer wasn't joking about their superb bagging skills.

I have only been here once, and I instantly need to profess my love to it. Not only did I pick up a HUGE container of melon, and a chocolate yogurt for $2.75, But they gave me a free banana too!

even though it's a tiny and slightly cramped space, Sue's is definitely the one stop place to go for a healthy pants lunch or snack on a budget. You'll find all kinds of fruit, nuts, veggies, and dairy products (Greek Yogurt what what!). You'll also find a super friendly staff. I'm sold!

Sue's is close to my work so it's great place to grab something for lunch or dinner. Prices are average but quality is better than at the grocery stores. They also have dairy and bread, honey, jelly etc...
The staff is great, they only take cash, on an afternoon when I only had credit, I promised to go to the ATM and come back with the $$. She told me it was too cold out and to bring it another time... they sell big bags of lettuce but let you take half if you know you won't use it all.
Great place to have in an area that is lacking fresh produce.

i think sue's is the best place to get produce in the city outside of the italian market or the other various farmers markets. the quality is at least as good as in the supermarkets and it's less expensive. i just picked up a pint of blueberries for $2 and they were fresh and huge - i guess they're in season.

it is cash only and during weekday lunch hours there is only one person working the register. usually it's john, and he's super fast - but there will easily be 10-15 people in line during these hours. after 5, there are two people on the registers and the line moves quickly. the store is super small so it's helpful to go in there already knowing what you want.

Sue's is the best of the best! Inexpensive, fresh, friendly, helpful, and everything beyond. I wish I still lived around the block simply for Sue's. Now I live near the Italian Market, which is similarly priced, but rotten within minutes of your purchase. Sue's is always fresh, and I know they get up at the butt-crack of dawn to personally pick up their fresh food from farmers. (At least, that's what I heard).

One time I forgot that I didn't have cash and the guy-owner (we call him Man Sue) told me to just pay for it next time. You don't get service like that anymore! Of course I paid for it the next time and they were very gracious. They are always sticking extra bananas in your bag and rounding down on the change. I hope I'm not ratting them out to the Feds!

In addition to fresh produce, they also have some great products and fresh breads and bagels. They carry unique produce items as well, that you won't find anywhere else.

**On a side note, for entertainment purposes, I'll relay this story: One time there was some sort of hullabaloo at 17th and Sansom that involved all of the patrons and employees of the Sofitel standing in the street, and "Man Sue" walking around without any shoes (but, yes, socks) trying to help out (?). I don't know the situation, but I like that Sue's is part of the community!

Besides the farmers market at 23rd and pine or the italian market, this is the only place I buy my produce in the city. They always have a great selection and the prices are very reasonable. I go almost everyday, which is the best thing to do, as the prices often change. Cantelopes were $1.50 each and blueberries $1 last week. In the winter not all of their produce is local, but they always keep it as fresh as possible. Look on the shelves in the front for special items. Cash only.

Always have a good selection of fresh herbs for cheap!

Things I like about Sue's Produce Market:
1. Great Location, esp right next to Rittenhouse Square and close to Walnut Street shopping
2. Some great deals:
  a. fresh cilantro leaves for $1.00!!
  b. Jalapeno pepper for $0.08!!
3. Great variety of nuts, dried berries, fruit, and most veggies
4. Very friendly staff

Things I don't like:
1. High prices for milk, eggs, yogurt, among other things
2. Small place
3. Only open til 6pm
4. Accepts cash only

Quality  vs. Quantity...which do _you_ prefer?   My choice is clear.

Agree with all the unanimous 5 star reviews for Sue's; fresh, great selection, friendly and helpful and the store is intelligently laid out for not having acres of real estate.  Never knew it was there until I asked the produce manager at DiBruno's for Belgian endive, said he was out but Sue's would probably have it.  They did.

When I lived in the area, I went to Sue's at least once a week for all my fresh veggie and fruit needs. They have a good selection of nuts and herbs. Compared to my local supermarket, the prices for the produce, various nuts, cheese, and eggs were cheaper - and you got something fresher and possibly more interesting for less. How can you beat that? If you're curious about the taste of something or whether the red grape is sweeter than the green, just ask. You'll get an honest answer and/or a free sample - they might even tell you that the grapes coming in next week are worth waiting for instead.

This is the best place I have found in the city to grab a quick last minute produce addition to dinner.  It's adorable, and taps into a mix of local products (some of the produce and they stock their shelves with Sarcone's italian bread from the Italian Market area) and some not-so-local products.  Prices are good.  Line moves fast.  People are hustling and bustling after work.  Good times!

On the dairy front, while some of their products are are the higher priced end, this is the cheapest feta cheese I have seen!

This is THE place for every day produce shopping in the city.  The prices rival the outdoor stands in the Italian Market, yet the produce is much better.  They offer local and non-local options.  Fresh herbs are always $1/bag.  The staff is friendly, the mood is light, and even if there's a long line, it only takes a minute.  Forget the Pathmark, forget the Trader Joe's, Sue's is where it's at.

I used to buy all of my produce at the Reading Terminal Market. However, I work on 17th & Chestnut and some days I just didn't feel like walking to the RTM for groceries. This laziness is exactly how I discovered Sue's Produce Market. It was a cold & rainy day after work and I just had to have a veggie quesadilla for dinner. Rather than shelling out $7-$10 for one at a local eatery, I decided to suck it up and make one at home. I remembered walking past Sue's on many occasions but never stopped in. On this particular quesadilla-craving day I figured, "what the heck" and popped in for all of my veggie quesadilla needs. Ever since that day, I swing by Sue's either after work or on my lunch break to pick up fresh produce for lunch or dinner. The prices are insanely reasonable and the variety of produce is amazing for such a tiny place. You can get your basics --- apples, oranges, lettuce, etc. but they also have yummy goodness like Asian pears and blood oranges. Although their speciality is produce, they also stock fresh breads, pita bread, cheese, fancy jams and honeys, and snacks. My favorite is during Honeycrisp apple time --- my favorite kind of apple --- they some times have dollar bags of Honeycrisps outside. They also carry dollar bags of miscellaneous produce year round.

The go to guy of produce markets in my opinion - a hole in the wall smack in the hub of center city. I love Sue's for it's convenience (a block  away from my office) and friendly employees - I too was given a free pass on some grapes when I was short a couple dollars. They would lose a star for only taking cash, but I get that credit cards wouldn't make much financial sense for this mom and pop style establishment. They have a wonderful offering of (always) fresh produce along with a variety of dried fruits/veggies/nuts and some other necessary staples (dairy goods, eggs, bread, assorted juices/jams/tasty bites.) My favorite thing about Sue's is either the free banana (or apple) that comes with every purchase or the fact that they do not arbitrarily charge a $7 service fee for cutting up my fruit. On any given day, I'm able to grab an affordable serving of ready to eat mango slices, a non-twee bottled water, some organic yogurt and call it a day. Way to go Sue's! I do wish you were closer to home, but as far as an after work market, you beat out DiBruno's for my produce needs for sure.

This place is TINY.  Teeny-tiny.  If you have more than 2 or 3 customers inside, it's a tight squeeze, so it's hard to look at the produce in those conditions.  However, it seems like they've got a pretty good selection, considering how miniscule this shop is.  I've gone there on my lunch hour and have gotten 1-lb. bags of cherries or other fresh fruit, and it was always good.  However, I think this place is a little expensive.  I've been told that it's got the cheapest produce and fruit in Center City, which isn't saying a whole lot b/c food stores there are pricey.  If you want cheap fresh produce and fruit, then head to one of the farmer's markets or produce stands further out, like in the Northeast or the 'burbs.  But if you're in Center City and are jonesing for some fresh veggies or fruit, then definitely check out Sue's.  Just hope it's not crowded.
