I needed to hang out somewhere while my wife visited the quilt shop across the street (the Nimble Thimble, in case you're interested) on a weekday afternoon, and since, sadly, nearby Garlic City Books is closed after just a year in business, a GOOD cup of coffee and something sweet to munch on seemed to fit my needs, so Sue's on the southwest corner of Monterrey and 5th Streets came in handy.

The Costa Rican coffee was the BEST I've EVER had and a "monster" chocolate chip cookie was soft and chewy and chocolatey, just the way I like it.

They have free Wi-Fi so I could browse the web on my iPad. Altogether a pleasurable hour or so. Kudos to the nice woman who was staffing the coffee bar today (Wednesday, October 19, 2011.). I'll definitely go back next time I'm in the neighborhood.

It cost me $4.75 for my indulgence, but I don't regret it.

Solid coffee, great biscuit, nicest lady ever working the front end. You won't get high end barista perfection, but don't forget you're in Gilroy. And points for not being Starbucks!

Wandered over for some caffeine after breakfasting at OD's Kitchen.

Pleasant atmosphere, friendly gal behind the counter, coffee good enough to inspire the purchase of a 1/2lb of beans to take home.

I was slightly surprised to find a cafe this nice in such seemingly inhospitable terrain.   Will definitely visit again.

I went in today since I was hungry. The specials were some sandwiches and so on, and ravioli. I asked about the ravioli, and meatballs. The gal said they were nothing special and in fact she didn't like the meatballs much at all.

    This, from an employee lol.

A couple-few years of spotty or indifferent service, availability of things like .... eggs .... and so on, from Sue's perched on my shoulder and advised: Otherwise.

I went to Station 55 around the corner and more on that later.

We went in on a Saturday morning, walked up to the counter, with no one ahead of us, and stood there unacknowledged, and continued to wait as a line built up...

The wait continued for another minute and just said forget it, and walked out the door. 2 employees standing around and none of us can even be told there will be a wait or that they'd be right with us?

    No thanks.

Just left this place. I walked in and she said she'll be with me in 5 mins. It was only her working and she was making an egg salad at the moment. So no biggie. She said she was ready for me so I ordered a turkey sandwich. That came out to $5. Okay fine, it must be good.

I got my sandwich and it was nothing special. just a sandwich with a halved pickle on the side. Definitely not worth $5! Really was a sandwich I could've made at home. All it had was turkey lettuce mayo mustard and onion.

As far as drinks go, I didn't order anything because I had a water.

The atmosphere was blah, Sandwich tastes alright (again nothing special), service was alright. She was nice but maybe there should be at least one more employee? Not every customer would've waited if she told them she'll be with them in 5 mins.

I would come back to try some coffee next time.

Coffee Roasting or Espresso Roasting because there was no variety when it came to just coffee.

Went for coffee and there was none made?  It was 10 am, hmm

Asked what types of coffee they had - "black, house, decaf"  variety?

Asked for a light coffee - gave me the house.  She brewed it with the espresso maker, and pored hot water in it!? WTF, I could have went to Jack in the Box, and got the same quality if not better.  Watery tasteless crap.

Very good cappuccino and great service. Avoid the multiple Starbucks shops surrounding it, just go there and enjoy good coffee and nice, personable service.

Stopped here after making a wrong turn at Albuquerque...

Seems to have been built in an old saloon, the bar is still quite in evidence.

The coffee was great, and the selection of assorted pastries was delicious.  I've never seen such big scones.

If I lived in Gilroy, this would probably be a frequent stop.

Not sure how you ruin a "cafe au lait" but the coffee was way too dark, and I am actually a fan of really strong coffee.  And, the milk was steamed way too hot.  I couldn't even drink half of the thing because it was utterly disgusting.

I went here this morning before the Garlic Festival and it was a cute cafe especially for Gilroy, in fact, I think it's the best place in the area to get a latte. The prices and espresso were good. There are also muffins and other things to snack on in case you are hungry. I will go here to get my soy vanilla latte if I visit Gilroy in the future again,

You must stop here - a true oasis.

We were meandering through Gilroy in my trusty Beetle on our northern Cali road trip when we spied Sue's.  Even from the outside, we could tell Sue's was different.  Nestled in the 'trendy' block in the otherwise square farm town of Gilroy ("garlic capitol of the world"), Sue's offers respite and down home service for weary travelers.

Hands down, I've never tasted a better espresso than that served at Sue's.  It's infinitely better than Starbucks.  They roast their own beans here and the taste is sweet and mellow (not that burnt taste that Starbucks has trained us to expect).  Even though Sue's is located in the last place you'd expect innovation, Sue's had the most interesting and eclectic drink menu I've EVER seen.  They have Vietnamese coffee and a delicious variation called the "Lesley", which is espresso with steamed milk and condensed milk.  The Lesley is absolutely to die for.

There were even more decadent drinks on the menu like a sinful hot cocoa drink called a "Snickers" with espresso, cocoa and various syrups.  They also offer some baked goods, including vegan, which again, I imagine is pretty rare in Gilroy (most of the other restaurants in Gilroy are Mexican).

Sue's has live music on certain nights of the week and a low-key and welcoming atmo.  You definitely must stop by if you're heading up or down the 101 on your next road trip.

I stopped in for some Joe while I was waiting for the Pool hall across the way to open up. What is unique about this place is they roast their own coffee beans. The machine is clearly displayed in the front of the store when you walk in. I bet it smells wonderful when its in operation! They have a selection of beans from around the world and some of the roasts are available in decaf as well. I chose the Indian coffee and that's going to be my buddy that helps me wake up this Saturday morning. They do have some wrought iron chairs and tables set up outside so you can enjoy your coffee outdoors. All in all a quaint little coffee shop where you can get your fix.

What a random find for me!  This cafe resembles those in the city.  You go Gilroy!  There's more to you than just the outlets!

    Pros:
+freshly roasted coffee, only $2.00 for a cup of goodness that makes you close your eyes and smile
+the staff is reeeally friendly.  making conversation while making your coffee.
+make their own masala chai mix!  they have a sniffing jar full of the spices.  i couldn't stop smelling that damn jar.
+my friend didn't like her drink and they offered to make her a new one
+interesting choices of coffee drinks!  vietnamese coffee, mandarin orange with espresso

    Cons:
-why are all the way in Gilroy??

Bottom Line:  If I was in Gilroy, I'd visit again.  The drip coffee (which they brew fresh for each cup!) was just too damn good and the staff was really cool.  They seem really knowledgeable about the drinks.  They take their shiz seriously.  Oh and there really is a Sue =)

Thank you for being open on Sunday.

We were on a trip to Aptos from San Diego and found our way into downtown Gilroy. The problem was that is was a ghost town on Sunday in the fall. Sue's was open and we came in for a visit. The barista was a nice fellow who helped us out. He was able to be make us a sugar free snickers hot chocolate. We picked up a bag of ground coffee for the road and a few pastries. The pastries were not from Gilroy ( Seaside I think) but were incredible.
Will stop by again on our next trip.

I just moved back with my family in the outskirts of Morgan Hill & was kind of panicking about the options down here. I used to be a barista at a cafe that treated our coffee making as a science, but I had kind of just accepted that Peet's was probably gonna be my best option. I mean, if you look on yelp, Starbucks is the only coffee place around here with five stars. Good God.

My first week back I had to make a trip out to the bookstore on 10th street in Gilroy. I noticed the store's sign that said: "we roast our own." No. Way. I gotta try this place out.

So I went inside & checked it out. The barista was really friendly, the drip coffee was awesome, & the interior is gorgeous. It's kind of like if there were cafes in the old west...haha. I plan on coming back here on the days when I don't have to commute to San Jose for school. This place is completely unexpected in the Gilroy-Morgan Hill area & I'm so glad I found it.

Sue's is the downtown place to go and meet people for a morning coffee and chat- always friendly staff, and I've even had that nice coffee shop experience where I was by myself, reading the paper and the local next to me struck up a conversation and it was actually a really nice conversation. Sue's always has people in there meeting for whatever reason.  Sometimes it takes the "barista" a while to get to everyone, but that's because each cuppa is made properly. It really is.  I don't get over there as often as I like, but when I'm desperate for a real tasty coffee, that's where I go.

    So...
I come here everyday 'cause I work right behind this place.
Its the coolest coffeeshop in probably 40-50 miles.
The coffee is really outstanding. Its roasted in the store. I've met and chatted with the lady who roasts it. It is delicious. After drinking Sues coffee, its impossible to drink Starbucks or anything else really. So much flavor. The best part about their coffee is that it tastes different everyday-literally.
The vibe is great, there is an out of tune piano in there, the staff is funny. If there is ever a rude barista you can totally give them attitude back and its cool.
Music acts come through here every once in a while. That's always entertaining/interesting.
This is the only place to get coffee in Gilroy and Morgan Hill.

Sue's was my stop en route from LA to SF, to wait out traffic. They have a great selection of eclectic coffee creations, smoothies and little nibbles. I was able to plunk down with my laptop at an outdoor table, and take a creative break rather than sit in traffic. What a choice!  They advertise free wireless, and the signal was strong, but the outbound connection didn't work and couldn't be fixed on the spot. Fortunately the pool place across the street also had (working) free wireless. Roger, the barista, was very helpful. Recommended.

How have I lived in Gilroy for nearly 8 years and not tried Sue's Coffee?  Probably because downtown Gilroy is ...not the cutest... and I don't spend much time there (now I'm trying to get to know Gilroy better and discovering some great places like Sue's and the cute Aveda salon across 5th street!!).  The House blend is really mild.  I tried the Vietnamese coffee today (for those who don't know, I didn't, it's an Americano with sweetened condensed milk) - tasty!  I usually just drink drip coffee but I'm excited to try the Mexican mocha sometime.   I've been back to try their house made Masala Chai (no sugar) which was a treat.  The morning barista is super chatty and friendly.  If you want a fresh cup the secret word is "fresh brew" (it's on the menu, I just overlooked it) .    This is definitely my new place for coffee!
    *****
I'm happy to report the Mexican mocha is FABULOUS.  Rich-but-not-too-rich chocolate, nice balance of cinnamon... Definitely a special occasion drink for me, I will look forward to it in the winter.  Also noticed they make Italian sodas and French sodas (club soda, syrup and half-n-half)... I'm having fun trying out the menu.  Oh yeah, last time I was there to get beans for home,  the barista was happy to make my daughter a "custom" drink (steamed milk with vanilla syrup, and even added whipped cream and vanilla sprinkles to make it special

I was wandering around downtown and Sue's pulled me in.  I had read reviews here before, but I had forgotten the name.  Perfect place to stop before heading over Hecker pass.  Classic downtown coffee shop with all kinds of people there--retired guys meeting in back, moms with kids, young people, everybody.  Plenty of seating choice with the "in back, out of the way" option, or "sit and watch the passing parade from the window" and some outside seating.  Nothing out of line about prices.  Friendly staff.  Interesting decor (does the piano ever get played?).
