I'm thinking that the kids who work at Subway are kind of hoping to be fired so that they can collect unemployment.

My partner went to pick up sandwiches on Sunday night, three hours before closing, only to be told that they were out of bread.  Not just one kind of bread, all of them.  This would be one thing if they were, say, a chicken restaurant, but you'd think that a place that serves NOTHING BUT SANDWICHES would be well-stocked in bread.  As I suspect this was a ploy to get out of serving random customers, apparently preferring to spend their time standing around with their thumbs up their asses, I was tempted to go there myself to see if I'd get the same story.

This was not the first time they've mysteriously run out of items, just the first time it's been something as overall ridiculous as every kind of bread they serve.  Usually it's some kind of lunch meat, and the news is given by the same slack-jawed lunkhead I always see working in there.  Dude, seriously, if you don't feel like working, just quit.

I know, you're probably reading this and thinking, "Gena, you live in New York friggin' City, why are you wasting time on a Subway?" Well, sometimes you just want quick, cheap sandwiches that go down easy.  The hassle from this particular outlet's "sandwich artists" ain't worth it, though.

I have never given one star before. I have always felt like, "Well, gee, at least I left full," or "At least I got what I came here for," or "At least the people at this establishment kinda tried." I'm no monster.

But this place SUCKS.

In a neighborhood without a ton of dining options, I was a little excited the first time I saw the familiar green and yellow of Subway on Church Ave. Most of the Subways I've been to in Manhattan are quick and friendly, bucking the fast-food trend of shitty service with smiles and a feeling of personal attention to your meal.

Here? They don't have anything you want and they don't care. The kids who work here don't care about you or your meal. They care about saying hey to their friends who are milling around in the dining room, or the music pumping loudly from their shitty speakers.

I've been here four times and have had almost the same experience each time: I ask for something, they say they don't have it, and they act annoyed when I ask for an alternative.

The last time I went, they only had two bread choices during dinner time on a Friday (don't judge my eating habits!). Then, they didn't have ham. They didn't have wraps, either. When I finally got a sandwich and was ready to check out, I asked the cashier if he was sure about the total because it seemed a little high. He shrugged and repeated the same total he had just said. I did the math out loud and asked him again if he was sure. He looked at the price and repeated it again.

Bad, just bad.

We want owner-operated restaurants and stores here, not chain restaurants and stores.
