This tiny sandwich shop is a hidden gem in the I.D. Clean, friendly, and delicious, you won't find a better sub for $4. The owner crafts subs with such an incredible diligence that I found watching him more interesting than watching ESPN on the two flat-screen TVs in the tiny seating area. In addition to your choice of meats or vegetarian options, you get a healthy amount of veggies and sauce, all meticulously arranged to be perfectly distributed. It's quite a sight to see. The result is a sandwich which is very flavorful but which doesn't spill toppings all over the place when you take a bite.
Just be patient and try to come at off-peak hours. The rigorous presentation of the sandwiches means that you might have to wait a while longer than at most sub shops. If only they accepted on-line orders like Specialty's does...
AWESOME! Where's the Become Fan button like on FB Apps?
This place is freakin' cool with its interior and great food, to boot.
I had me them fish cake spring rolls---super tasty & fresh---and the tofu sub---very good flavor and satisfying. I finished off with a cup o' water to flush it all down and a red bean drink (very good, but too much chopped ice).
Flatscreens on both ends likely having sports. The owner is cool and seems darn familiar to me but can't think of where. Seating can shift fast. It was dead when i came in with his eyes glued to the sports. Some people came and went (To-Go?). Then all of a sudden, big chinese groups filled up the other 3-ish out of 4-ish tables in this cute, small hole in da wall piece of goodness. Not sure if there was a public restroom.
I'm totally going back for more...more...--MORE!
I had the hamburger steak sandwich and it was excellent - FOR $5.
You've gotta be kidding me.
Ingredients fresh: cucumbers, tomatoes, bell peppers.
Service was also really good - the guy owner/waiter is really friendly and speaks both Cantonese and Mandarin.
The shop is really small though - so don't expect to sit around with a group of more than 6. There were only 2 tables that sat 6 each and 1 table that sat 2.
I'll be back for sure.
Great sandwiches! They make them in front of you - subway/quiznos style. They are double the price of the traditional $2 ones you can get up at 12th and Jackson but these are better. I like the fact that they make most of their sauces in house and the workers are extremely friendly. For a quick lunch, you can't beat this place. I am going again today :)
While not authentic Banh Mi, these are great sandwiches. I have never seen a Banh Mi with lettuce and tomato. But the baguette is top notch, everything is expertly prepared, and the price cannot be beat. I had the very excellent salt and pepper tofu sandwich. I also tried my wife's BBQ pork, and it tasted more Chinese than Viet. I would be interested to go back and try some of their entress.
The place is extremely cozy, only about 3 tables, so be prepared to maybe take your sandwich on the road.
Another great experience! Except this time the owner of the place informed me that my yelp review was in the papers! WOO HOO!!!! I had to take a picture of it and share! I ordered the hamburger steak sandwich and the ham, cheese, and egg sandwich. They were both delicious and came fresh out the oven toasted, cucumber were nicely cut, and it's always a treat to come here!
If you have not tried this place yet, you should make your next trip here instead of settling for a $2.00 banh mi. For the same price of a Subway footlong($5.00) you can have a better sandwich here. The owner here I believe is multi-lingual, I am pretty sure he speaks Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, and English.

I can see where consumers find would like to categorize the subs/sandwiches to Vietnamese banh mi,… Read more »
This is one of my top three places to eat lunch in the ID (and I've tried literally every restaurant in the ID). I come here every week or so. I'm a big fan of the BBQ Pork Sandwiches, but since Dave introduced me to the Salt and Pepper Tofu, I get that frequently as well. It's some of the best Tofu I've ever had. The spring rolls are delicious. I've also tried the Soup Specials and they are delightful.
The owner/operator makes the sandwiches with great care, laying out the ingredients on their fresh rolls ever so precisely.
For dessert, they also have little pancake nuggets. I'm not sure what they're called, but they are a fun treat.
The one caveat is this place is tiny. Get here early if you want a table or get it to go and eat in Hing Hay park.
Two words: Awe some!
The service is friendly, the prices right, and the sandwiches are killer. nuff said!
This place is interesting. I kind of didn't know what to expect, since I'd heard that this was not the traditional banh mi, but more of a cross between a Vietnamese banh mi and a sub sandwich. They have both traditional Vietnamese fillings (grilled pork, shredded chicken, Vietnamese ham, etc), but they also have honey ham, turkey and other traditionally American sandwich meats. They put lettuce, tomato, onions, mayo, and soy sauce in their banh mi, and you can also request jalapeno and pickles if you want. The prices are a bit higher than 5 blocks over and down on Jackson, but they are good, and the owner takes extreme care in constructing each banh mi. I'll have to come back at some point and time to try the other dishes on the menu.
Then after you're done, you can stroll on over to Unicorn Crepes next door and have dessert :)
Good option for a quick lunch in the ID.
The sandwiches are like Bahn Mi except they offer a wide range of fillings from BBQ pork to egg salad to turkey. At $4-5 they are a bit pricer than those you'd find at nearby Vietnamese delis but, luckily, you get your money's worth out of the extra couple of bucks. These sandwiches are a bit larger and contain more fillings than their brethren up on 12th & Jackson.
The BBQ pork sandwich I tried had lots of tender pork in a sweet, almost teriyaki-like sauce. My friend had a rice vermicelli dish with short ribs and tofu which was also comparable to most other offerings in the ID.
The tea here is also the best complimentary tea I've had in the ID and the incredibly nice and attentive staff keep it flowing.
Delicious Vietnamese sandwiches and so cheap ($3.99). I tried lemon grass chicken and BBQ pork and both were excellent. The sandwich chef is meticulous in piling ingredients and keeping the sandwich board clean. Also the ingredients looked very fresh.
I went back again today and my review has not changed. I tried the hamburger steak sandwich this time. The only issue I had this time was that they took a while to make the hamburger steak in the kitchen. The sandwich chef kept asking if it was made but they were busy trying to cook the kitchen dishes for those dining in. Otherwise, the sandwich was tasty. The sauces along with the veggies, gave the sandwich a sweet, sour and spicy taste which made it a pleasurable experience.

I really want to give this place a higher rating. Its no secret that I like to support mom and pop's kind of places. The places where the food has a face as a wonderful side dish. and this place is no exception. The owner is an artist...like the visual painting sort. He is a personable person who takes a great deal of effort and pride into his work. And it shows. If my rating was solely based on effort put into the food, this guy would get a medal of honor. He puts such care and effort into the food you really could say he's a "sandwich artist". His whole body goes into the movement of building a meal for you. But this is where he begins to lose points. The extra care and effort...leads to slow delivery times and on a lunch break where you have an hour or maybe even less...food in mouth and hand is worth more than being cleverly pieced together piece by piece. The sandwiches are tasty and it probably has to do with the fact that the bread is toasted with a swipe of butter and quality ingredients go into the sandwich. Unique ingredients as well (think bulgogi, teriyaki chicken, spicy chicken teriyaki, fish balls). But all the creativity in the world doesn't beat out the fact that I still need something quick and tasty in my stomach ASAP. Visually the food is very clean and neat. Taste wise they are among the better sandwiches in "fast food", however I don't mind if my sandwich is a little messy as long as its jam packed with flavor. I mean...the idea of a sandwich was quick and dirty solution to hunger. Bread engulfing savory meat.
If you're stuck in the ID, sub sand is a great sandwich place (not bad v. noodles either) but if you're looking for a sandwich worth the drive and exploration, try Paseo or Tubs.
Great service and sandwich building skills. huge sandwiches. price is right.
They have the most delicious and cheapest vegetarian spring rolls ever! The owners are super sweet, the food amazingly fresh and service incredibly efficient. This shop has all my favorite southern style Chinese treats, like tapioca, red bean, black sesame puddings and custards. As a vegetarian I can get a healthy, filling, inexpensive and tasty meal here. I highly recommend Sub Sand.
"Now why the hell would I go all the way to Chinatown just to got a sub shop?" I thought to myself when they posted their Coming Soon sign next to Unicorn Crepes. But, duh, Dianne. When you're in the International District, it's most likely an ASIAN sub. What the hell were you thinking?
In any case, I was doing my monthly trek to Bayani Commercial today, wondering what in the world I was going to have for lunch, since I was in a hurry. I wondered if I should try that Sub Sand place since I was going to be walking by it. And, although I would normally have just passed it by, given that I was in a hurry... I was stopped by the food serving pictures on their window... which did NOT look like subs at all. No, really. They were rice dishes and noodles. I peered through the door to the big menu behind their counter that confirmed that, yes, they did serve subs - though the few sampling pictures were all indoors.
Inside, there were only enough tables for ten people: that's 5 tables that's grouped 2-2-1 in the small space they have. i squeezed between the tables and the counter, and it took just a little while before somebody came out from the kitchen to help me.
The guy who came out to help me was quite nice, and stacked my satay beef sub all neat and pretty as a picture - onions, carrots, cucumbers, lettuce, [peanut sauce on my bread,] and all. (That white vegetable that they shred for fresh spring rolls - what is that again? Sorry, meat eater here...) That is, until I asked him to wrap it to go. (I was surprised when he asked me if I would prefer it wrapped or boxed, btw. But they do probably have to-go boxes for rice dish diners.)
The beef stew and rice noodle dish that came out for a couple of the people sitting down also looked pretty good. I want to go by again and try those. :o And those are probably what I would have ordered if only I hadn't needed to go... and go SOON.
As he handed me my sandwich, he asked me if I would be eating it soon. I told him, "in 15 minutes". Which is probably how long it stays warm for. He then wished me an "I hope you like it" as I walked out the door.
I actually rather do.
I was introduced to Sub Sand last week by a coworker who frequents this establishment for a delicious and quick lunch. I've been back twice since then! This place is tiny (enough space for about 18 people to sit down), and it is always packed during lunch time. (I recommend getting their food to go.) I've had the standard Vietnamese Sub Sandwiches (Banh Mi) many times although this place has added quite an interesting twist to it. You've got to try their Sate Beef Sandwich or their Lemongrass Chicken Sandwich. (Delicious!) If you're in the mood for something more substantial, try their spicy beef noodles or their "Look Luck" stir-fried beef cubes with fried rice. :-)
A great quick lunch place in the ID. Cheap good food with reasonably good portions.
Not exactly sure this is the place. We call the place the pho prison. It has bars on the window because of its location. It is right next to a mini mart at the far end of Raineer. It use to be cheaper and owned bu someone else. The have a plasma screen which is always showing some Asian channel and horrible music. However, the V sands (grilled pork) are to die for. The pho however is better caddy corner at the place that has two restaurants one small on big on the same lot. If anyone reads this and knows if I reviewed the right place that would be great. Otherwise, I say anytime you can get a V-sand you should experience its splendor.
This place is really good! One of my fav. places in the International District. The owner is very friendly. The food is very good! The subs are very tasty and very well made! The soup noodles are also very good too! I always order the crab noodles (I don't think it's on the menu yet, but if you ask for it, he'll make it for you), banh xeo (Vietnames egg crepe), and a sub when I go with my husband. The owner always give us free dessert too! He definitely knows how to run a business! One con - the place is a bit too small & there's no AC.
I wandered in needing change for parking (credit card slot was broken) and wasn't sure what kind of reaction I would get in the ID....but was pleasantly surprised by the friendliness of the staff. So much, in fact, that I stopped by later and had a delicious bahn mi. The prices are about $5 a sandwich, so while there are cheaper options, the ones here are loaded with yummy toppings and worth paying a little extra!
