We used Style Matters for our wedding reception this past November and I must say, it was money well spent!  We met with Spencer initially to discuss what we envisioned for our reception.  Spencer was very intuitive and was able to quickly draw out of us our likes/dislikes which helped give our ideas for the evening some form.

After our meeting with Spencer, we hooked us up with Noah (aka. DJ Weaponry) who would be our DJ for the night.  We communicated with Noah numerous times via email before meeting discussing our musical tastes, play/do NOT play lists, flow of the evening, etc which made our final meeting very easy.  Noah was incredibly easy to work with and was very professional.  It put us at ease on game day knowing that Noah had it under control.  In short, we wanted our guests to be on the dance floor all night, and that is exactly what happened!  Many of our guests told us afterwards how much fun they had dancing all night long!  Noah delivered exactly what we wanted and our guests loved it!

If you are looking for a great DJ, don't be fooled by lights, smoke machines, and all the other gimmicks that are out there.  It is about the music!  Style Matters is about the music!  So if you have to make one call, it should be to Style Matters!  It is with out a doubt, WHERE IT'S AT ("I got two turntables and a microphone!")!!!!

    THANKS AGAIN!!!

    Shocker. Another 5 star review.

Spencer teamed us up with DJ Dustin Harris for our wedding reception. Great read by Spencer. Dustin has the street cred we were looking for, considering I came to find out he used to play in a band I am a fan of. His set was spot-on for our group. Dustin did a great job of taking some loose suggestions and blending it into list which kept us rocking all night. He found some obscure stuff for us and even grabbed the audio off of a joke song on YouTube.

Awards all around. Dustin could not have been better for our group and I couldn't have been happier with the whole process.

Also, keep an eye out for a killer trunk that Spencer has at his place. That thing is like two hundred years old and was built by an old Swede.

Our night with Style Matters? Epic dance party and really the most amazing night of our lives.

There's really only one person you should talk to when you're looking for a DJ and that's Spencer and his crew. Immediately after meeting Spencer I knew that we had found exactly what we were looking for. He knows what he's doing and wants to make sure that he gets your night done perfectly. This was a huge decision for my husband Drew as he is a music aficionado and DJ himself and we absolutely made the best choice. Spencer makes sure to meet with you several times to make sure that he can match up your personalities with his talented arsenal of DJs. For us, Spencer was a perfect fit. From the sound/music for outdoor ceremony to the music for the reception, he was nothing short of incredible.

My husband and I stayed on the dance floor the ENTIRE night and we weren't alone. Our dance floor became our receiving line, everyone from our wedding met us out there. From the first song until the very last, our wedding was a complete jam.

We received SO MANY compliments on the music and we couldn't thank Spencer enough. He doesn't just play music - he created memories and moments for us that we, our family and friends will never forget. Spencer, thanks for laying down the soundtrack to an unforgettable night.

Check out the pictures we uploaded and this awesome video of our last song:

Looking at all the reviews, there isn't much to add. I can only say that my (now) husband and I had been to some weddings with cringe-worthy DJs. We were pretty clear that we didn't want conga lines, props, cheesy lighting or bad "Top 40 DJ" vibes. Duke was our assigned DJ and he nailed what we were looking for.

Our dance floor was packed they entire time! We had guests asking for the play list the moment the reception was over, and Duke quickly obliged, which was very sweet.

We can't recommend them enough! A quality DJ is pretty essential to any good party.

I think all the other reviews for Style Matters are probably sufficient to convince anyone looking for DJ services that Style Matters is the best around.  So bear with me while I pile on.  From beginning to end my newly minted wife and I had an excellent experience with Style Matters.

Spencer was very relaxed and made sure the whole experience went smoothly.  He listened to our musical tastes and sent us bio's for several DJ's.  Making it much easier to find the right DJ for us.

Now that I've said all that about finding the right DJ you can throw it out the window.  Just go with Margot.  She was beyond awesome.  I think Merriam-Webster is still trying to create the right superlative to describe how great she is.  She met with us prior to the wedding and went through all the details.  Whenever we came up with a blank for a song to go with a particular part of the reception (entrance, cake cutting, etc.) she provided us with a multitude of options.  During the event itself everyone was up dancing and had nothing but compliments regarding the music that was played.  High marks for Style Matters!

I had the best experience working with Style Matters! Spencer was really easy going and easy to talk to. He matched us with the perfect DJ.
Noah was our DJ and he rocked it! Everyone was on the dance floor the whole entire night. Everyone at our wedding had the best night ever; they're still talking about it. Just last night my friend was saying that her legs were more sore the morning after my wedding than they have been after any workout. We couldn't stop dancing!! Guests of all ages have been telling me since the wedding how much they loved our DJ.
My wedding night was truly amazing and I owe it to Noah for making it such a huge success! I HIGHLY recommend Style Matters and Noah.

We chose Style Matters for our wedding and were certain after 5 minutes into our first meeting that we made the right choice. We felt 100% comfortable that we were in good hands the entire time. Their process of meeting with the couple, gathering information from them and matching them with the perfect DJ is not only progressive, it's also brilliant! All we wanted was to have a packed dancefloor at our wedding and we SURE got our wish! Our DJ blew the roof off the place! Our guests couldn't stop talking about it. My new hubby and I were sweating from head to toe as was everyone else. We did not want the party to end. THANK YOU Style Matters for making our wedding a very memorable (and sweaty) one.

I agree with Jessica S. Spencer is a MAD SCIENTIST!!! You have an amazing way with people and passion for your business. Keep it up!

Just hire Style Matters and be done with it already! They're the BEST. Basically, if you want a DJ who can keep the dance floor packed all night without resorting to playing a Black Eyed Peas song, then Style Matters is for you!

Ralph (aka Major Taylor) DJ'd my wedding and the music was exactly what we wanted. Actually that's not true, it was definitely way better than what we wanted! If Ralph is available for your wedding, CHOOSE HIM.

The fact that these DJs actually spin makes all the difference. Imagine being out on the dance floor. It starts faint at first, but yes, you heard it - the very beginning beat of your all-time favorite song from college. You look around and aww yeah, your friends heard it too and have already gathered themselves into a circle and are ready to GO. NUTS.

As everyone else has said it already, Spencer (the owner) is awesome. He really, truly cares about making his clients happy. We wanted to have a mix of songs for our wedding party entrances and Spencer made a phenomenal mix for us that was completely perfect!

Just a heads up, you will notice immediately that the DJs at Style Matters are cooler than you. It's just a fact. But don't worry, they're not too cool to play your wedding. You want "Party in the USA?" Ralph rocked it. (And btw the crowd loved it, that song is everyone's secret shame).

Only regret - finding out AFTER the wedding that Ralph can drop a dance remix of "The Circle of Life" - as in the LION KING. How awesome is that??

We had a great experience using Style Matters for our June 2011 wedding in Oak Park.

Since I was planning a wedding from afar (I live in California), my tactic was to hire professionals and let them do their jobs...based on yelp reviews, we contacted Style Matters and were not disappointed.

I liked what I heard  and read about Style Matters but I was a little fearful of dealing with total music snobs.. I mean, I didn't want the Macarena or YMCA played at our wedding, but I also didn't want techno or electronica that would be totally over our guests' heads. When it comes to getting down on the dance floor, I like pop music as much as anyone.  What we really wanted was a nice mix of indie rock, classic rock, motown and R&B for our ceremony and dinner, followed by songs to get everyone dancing.

My husband did most of the planning and coordinating with Spencer, and later with our DJ, Ryan.  He really liked working with them, and they totally came through on the type of music we were looking for.

Ryan was so nice and personable. The main comment I got from our guests was, "Is the DJ a friend of yours? How do you know him?" He just fit right in.  The dancing was spectacular and perfect. I think EVERYONE danced at our wedding, who was physically able to.  The highlight was a spontaneous conga line, led by yours truly. Umm, yeah. Hire these people.

Spencer is a pleasure to work with. Very detailed and attentive to his customers.

A huge shout out to Justin, who absolutely KILLED IT at our wedding!

I can't tell you how many of our guests came up and told us how much they loved the DJ.

Thank you guys so much for making our wedding a huge success!

Noah with Style Matters did a great job listening to what my fiance and I were looking for and then executed for a perfect reception.  Young or old, pretty much everyone was shaking their booty on the dance floor for most of the night.  We really couldn't have asked for more.  Thanks Noah!

We just had Margot and Tom DJ our wedding.  They completely exceeded our expectations!  EVERYONE was on the dance floor.  Dozens of people complimented the music - and we had a few music snobs there.

Previous to the big day, Margot and Tom met with us to go over our likes/dislikes and our vision for the wedding.  We really felt that they truly took us as a couple into consideration when choosing the songs.  They took requests, but were selective about the songs.  One of my bridesmaids requested "Mambo Number 5" and they told her they couldn't play it unless the bride cleared it.  Thank goodness that song wasn't played at our wedding (no offense to my lovely bridesmaid)!!  Everything was awesome, including the music during dinner.

Spencer (the owner) was very helpful to work with as well.  He was very quick to respond to any emails or calls.

Style Matters gets an A++.  Book them - you and your guests will be pleased!!   I will be recommending them to everyone I know!

It's been about 6 weeks since our wedding and we have yet to come down, due in large part to Spencer and Style Matters incredible work. At the risk of pointing out the obvious, a great deal of planning goes into your wedding day and we have attended enough of them to know that the right recipe includes good food and plenty of drink, close friends and family, and excellent music. The two of us are also admitted music snobs and like numerous other reviews pointed out, wanted to avoid the cliche DJ and all that comes with him/her.

Spencer made the entire process a blast and understood the "vibe" we were looking for without much (read: any) explanation. In fact we spent an inordinate amount of time on our honeymoon rehashing what a superb job he did setting the tone from drinks to dinner to straight up dance party.

A relationship, like a party, evolves and Spencer built the aforementioned vibe steadily and never looked back. Suffice it to say, by the end of the second song we had to ask the catering crew to move tables and extend the dance floor. The area was PACKED for the rest of the evening.

Furthermore, Spencer's style can't be categorized which is a testament to his skill. We had old and young shaking it for hours. Without any embellishment ALL of our friends said it was the best DJ/dance party wedding they had ever been to (and naturally music snobs hang with like minded types, so it was high praise).

Bottom line, your search ENDS NOW. Call Spencer and stop worrying about the music. You can thank him later!!!!!

People are now judging other weddings aginst ours...  And ours wins by a landslide!

Spencer did a great job of keeping people on the dance floor and creating a great soundtrack to the entire night.  He had great suggestons for things like music during cutting the cake and other moments.

The flow and energy was high all night and we had a blast.  Guests loved him so much that they are exporting him to Cleveland of all places for their own wedding! Win!

    Book Style Matters NOW!!!

I'm a total music junkie, and the minute my boyfriend (now husband!) proposed, I was on the hunt for the perfect dj - even before I was thinking about dresses!   I knew the most important part of our wedding reception (10-22-11) would be the dj and the dancing.  I've been to weddings with bad/cheesy djs and I knew a few bad songs could ruin the whole night - I wanted a wedding where people would dance all night and have to throw their sweaty clothes in a corner when they came home - and that's just what we got.

I lucked out in finding Spencer/Style Matters on Yelp and got the last spot for our wedding day - in other words, call now!  Spencer was so professional and wonderful to work with and I knew when we met him we were in very good hands.  Spencer pairs up the djs with the couples and when he said John Simmons would be our dj of course I had to google him and yeah, he is totally amazing and we were so excited to have him!

John met with us in person to get to know us better and see what kind of vibe we wanted, and he could not have been nicer, more accommodating, or more fun.  As some of the other reviewers have said, Style Matters djs are hipper than we'll ever be, but there was no attitude at all - John was just totally kind and cool.  He even went to visit our site, which was great, because we ended up doing some rearranging for more room to dance based on his recommendation.  We gave him some challenges - a father of the bride who loves jazz, a pack of pre-teens who wanted to dance to Katie Perry-ish stuff that we're not into, and a crowd of people in their 20s-70s.  We also had a first dance song that we wanted the guests to dance with us to at a certain point, and John made it all happen.  And I got a little teary-eyed when I realized he was playing a song from "Where the Wild Things Are" soundtrack for the bridal party entrance, just like I had mentioned to him, but didn't know he would do.

So, you should've been there to get the full effect, but here are the highlights - people dancing literally from 7-ish to 11 non-stop, a crazy conga line with all the guests circling the room, and all the little flower girls and my cousins from LA rocking out to "Brass Monkey" on the stage - in other words, just perfect and more than I ever could've hoped for.  The music was so great that as the bride, I never ate anything, never drank anything except water, never got to try the home-made doughnuts for dessert, and now am worried that everyone thinks I'm rude because I just danced all night!  But I couldn't help it...  Call them now and know that your party will rock...

We got married last night and I had to express my gratitude publicly here on Yelp! Noah aka Weaponry was our DJ and he rocked the house. We met with him a few weeks prior to the big day and basically told him the genres we like and let him run with it. We didn't give him any song list, because we know there is so much out there that we'd never think of and wanted the expert to do his thing. Everyone danced like crazy, he knows how to get the party going...and making it last. A few guests told us they wanted the soundtrack to our wedding. I want to have a one year anniversary party and hire him!

We knew we picked the right people for our wedding as soon as we talked to Spencer.  His company really fit our style perfectly and they know what they are doing.  Max was our amazing DJ.  He was able to navigate the few toasts and special requests we had through-out the night with ease and was never the annoying guy on the mic.  Also, he was super organized and prepared which made us very relaxed and able to enjoy the evening.

He listened to our musical taste, but even better he really made sure that everyone was dancing.  I think we had a room full of people that don't dance, including ourselves, but he was able to pick and adjust the songs to make us rock out until we were kicked out!  Everyone kept coming up to us through-out the night complimenting Max and the music selections.  Best wedding DJ ever.

My wife and I hired John to do our wedding and we have nothing but praise for the guy. The best testament to how much he knows what he's doing were the comments we got from multiple people saying they had never seen so many people on a dance floor for so long. We had aunts, cousins, friends and grandparents all dancing their hearts out--exactly what we were hoping for in our celebration. Spencer and John were both very professional and responsive ahead of time and they made the day itself a blast.

When we met with Spencer, we knew Style Matters were the kind of DJs we wanted. No bow ties, no colored lights, no line dances- they are pretty much are the opposite of the stereotypical wedding DJ. We had Ryan assigned to us about 6 weeks before the big day. He was really nice and super laid back. We had some beers with him at Moonshine (where he DJs weekly) and went over our suggested artists and do not play lists. At that point, I only had a general timeline for the reception but Ryan assured us that if there were any changes it wouldn't be a problem. I felt confident that he was going to do a great job and I never worried about the music at all.

At the reception, everything ran really smoothly and the dance floor seemed to be packed for most of the night. Ryan played a good mix of music that appealed to the crowd and songs that we had suggested. We had an incident at the reception where the best man got trapped in one of the elevators, and everyone got a good laugh when they returned to the reception to "Love in an Elevator". I know I was sad to see midnight roll around because I had a blast dancing with my girlfriends- so glad I had bought all of those flip flops!

We used Style Matters for our wedding last night. We were impressed by our first meeting with Spencer, and we hit it off great with our DJ, Duke. We loved that Duke listened to us and used his talents to keep everyone (young and old) dancing all night. Some of our guests are serious music lovers/concert goers/dancers, etc, and we received compliments from everyone on the DJ. Duke was extremely professional and handled everything smoothly. It's great to have someone so talented working the wedding- it meant less stress for us and we had a blast! I wish the music could have gone on longer :) Thank you, Duke and Spencer!

Style Matters is excellent for two important reasons:

    1. They are very professional
    2. They are exceptional DJs that understand and cater to their clients

    Professionalism
In working with both the owner (Spencer) and our DJ, we were more than pleased with their professionalism. They are prompt in responding to e-mails, cover all necessary information and follow through on what they promise. They are proactive in reaching out to you as your big day approaches (to assign your DJ and to finalize details) and in contacting you to make you aware of events that showcase their talent.

    Great DJs
Noah, our DJ, was fantastic. He has great presence and is client focused. After being matched with Noah, he sent us a friendly intro e-mail along with a few questions to help us organize our thoughts around music for our wedding. During our meeting, he walked through the questions with us and helped advise us on our timeline of events. We wanted to incorporate a dance set before dinner was served and he found the perfect spot for it.  His experience with and understanding of the mechanics of weddings was clear. Noah was very flexible with changes in the agenda as well - the night of the wedding, our fathers both decided that they wanted to speak (after previously saying no) and Noah accommodated by incorporating the toasts perfectly. As for the music - Noah was AWESOME! He interpreted our styles and read the crowd perfectly and had people on the dance floor ALL NIGHT! We've gotten tons of compliments on the structure of our dance sets (per Noah's suggestion) and the music. Our friends all want to know who we used so they can book the same DJ.

I can't say enough good things about Noah and Style Matters!

My husband (as of yesterday) and I are sitting on the couch resting our wounded feet after an insane evening on the dance floor, courtesy of Noah (DJ name is Weaponry). What an unbelievable evening set to a phenomenal soundtrack...Absolutely. Amazing.
Spencer is a great businessman and represents his company, Style Matters DJs, perfectly. When meeting with Spencer, about ten months prior to the wedding date, we were immediately impressed with his personable demenour and genuine enthusiasm for what he does (and what his DJ's represent). Spencer was informative, helpful, and always only an email away. He was easy to contact and we knew our wedding reception was going to rock.
Spencer did not DJ our wedding reception, but he did assign us with a DJ that would literally have people glued to the dance floor. We had the most unbelievable evening of dancing courtesy of NOAH. We honestly had people telling us that they were exhausted because they can't get themselves off the dance floor...from one "Ahh! F-Yeah..I love this song" to "Beat-Up the Beats!" to our morning after texts reading "Your DJ rocked it" and " Best DJ ever!"  our guests and us were mesmerized by what Noah was playing. The best part, we can't take credit for any of it. We simply told Noah that we want to dance and we dont want our guests to want to stop until the lights go on...and so it was...
Basically, If you want to dance and be surrounded by guests of every age enjoying themselves then you want Style Matters DJs.

Style Matters - Spencer and Crew - are nothing short of amazing! Max was our DJ of choice for our 11-11-11 wedding, and he nailed down our vision of our ceremony to the T, making the party unforgettable. From our first meeting with Spencer I knew we made the right choice. We met with Max once in person and communicated multiple times by email and phone, bouncing ideas off each other. Max really listened to our suggestions when it came to our musical tastes and types of songs we wanted played. I was afraid no one would be dancing,  but was pleasantly surprised to see a crowded dance floor all night, and I don't think we left once. Everyone complimented Max on the flow of the evening and the eclectic selection of music. Everything was done tastefully, nothing cheesy or predictable which was very important to us.  I'm listening back to the recording of the event as I write this, and can't believe how well done everything was. It's hard to remember in the moment, and the full recording they offer is a great memento and worth the extra cost. I'd recommend Style Matters in a heartbeat and have faith in not only Spencer and Max, but the entire crew!

noah = truly one of the best vendors we had for our wedding.

we met with spencer about a year and a half before our wedding (ridiculous, i know)... and immediately knew that we wanted to work with style matters.

as the wedding date approached, spencer paired us up with noah... who is AWESOME. my husband and i aren't what you would call "music people." when noah asked what kind of music we liked, i said britney and gaga... my husband said 80s pop. at the wedding, noah played exactly what we wanted... and other stuff we didn't know we wanted. he kept everyone on the dance floor all night... and i mean everyone... including my husband's 85 year old grandmother.

i don't think i've danced that much or for that long in my entire life... the music he played truly made our wedding so much fun... we couldn't have asked for a better dj!

one of my favorite things about noah: his official dj name is weaponry -- your wedding cannot be any cooler than having a dj named weaponry.

We were married in June this year and booked Ralph.   Having seen more than a few cheesy DJs in our day, we were hoping that our DJ would be anything but cheesy and would make a great evening for all our wedding guests.  Well, suffice it to say that Ralph rocked!

We had countless individuals come up to us and say what an AMAZING job that Ralph did at the wedding (which was apparent by the dancing that continued until the very end of our reception).  He played a fantastic selection of music and kept the crowd more engaged than we could have hoped for.  Thanks Ralph!!!!

Dealing with Spencer and Ralph was an extremely positive experience.  In our book, Style Matters is a first-rate outfit!

My sister and her husband chose Style Matters to DJ their wedding at Gallery 1028 in October and I've got to say that they and their string trio did an excellent job. As a caveat, I've DJed at nightclubs and at events on and off for 15 years, I am also the Event Technology director at a large Hotel in Cleveland that hosts a LOT of weddings and I would honestly say that Spencer was the best wedding DJ that I've ever heard or worked with.

His equipment, musical selection and demeanor were perfect compliments to the entire evening and the dance floor was packed until the very end. Spencer's string trio, String Theory, provided music for the ceremony and did a great job selecting and pacing the music. Then, Spencer moved over to play music for the cocktail hour, he played some nice, funky instrumental music that didn't overwhelm the conversations and mingling and which set a nice tone for the rest of the evening. During dinner, he played a nice selection including such non-traditional wedding fare as Thom Yorke, Bon Iver and other indie-friendly favorites. As someone who prides himself in playing something other than the obvious cliched music selections during my own events, I really appreciated the direction he took the party in.

After dinner, we moved into the speeches/dances portion of the evening and that went really smoothly as well. Spencer even took care of a special request from the Mother of the Groom to mix out of her Mother/Son dance into the Michigan State alma mater which he did very smoothly and effectively. After the pomp and circumstance were complete, the dance floor opened up with 80's favorites morphing to more modern dance floor fillers as the evening progressed and EVERYONE was dancing, from the 20 somethings to the 60 and up crowd.

Overall, I found Spencer and his company to be top-notch in every category from their equipment to the music selections and mixing. I wish we had a company like his in Cleveland to counter-act the bad tux wearing, chicken dance spinning DJs that populate our market.

My husband and I are so extremely pleased with Style Matters and particularly our DJ - Dustin. He really took the time to understand our musical tastes and with diverse tastes (think Salt n' Peppa AND Matt and Kim) and a diverse crowd, we weren't sure how our playlist would work out. BUT, Dustin killed it. Let's just say the groomsman, ushers and my father stayed on the dance floor - not even leaving to wipe the sweat, they just rolled up their pants and kept on dancing.

Thanks so much to Spencer and Dustin for making our wedding one to remember!

Style Matters did a great job at our wedding.  Max did a great job of working the crowd and playing some of favorite songs in addition to more contemporary stuff (which we needed some help with).  From young to old, so many people danced the entire night.  It was very special to us to see the big smiles on their faces as they tore up the dance floor.  A lot of our guests came up to us during and after the wedding and complimented us on DJ Max.  They also sent us a CD of the entire event (an add-on that we selected) that is an excellent memento of the biggest day of our lives.

I would highly recommend Style Matters as a DJ for your wedding - we were very impressed with their punctuality, professionalism, and their ability to read the crowd during the whole event.  They had a nice balance of our musical style and playing what our guests wanted to hear.

Great job from start to finish Max!

Ah, where to begin?  First with another five star rating (by the way, not to sound combative, but Alisha with the four-star rating - how do you rate a service you didn't actually use?  Let's keep Yelp responsible and informed, please).

I'll try to keep this brief, as I doubt that Yelpers will find an exhaustive play-by-play of the wedding boring at best...  Spencer was the perfect DJ for our wedding, and his performance was flawless.  We knew when we met with him that he was passionate about music; we were also realistic enough to know that his passion and experience meant we should leave DJ matters (e.g., what to play, when to play it) to him.  That said, Spencer was still very interested to hear about the music we enjoyed, what kind of vibe we wanted (everybody dancing!), and what songs we were determined to hear.

Fast forward to the wedding.  Spencer showed up and set up exactly as he said he would.  That was expected, but what wasn't expected was informing us five minutes before the ceremony that nobody had pulled out the aisle runner yet.  Spencer truly cared about all aspects of our special day being perfect, even those for which he wasn't responsible, and it took a huge amount of stress off our shoulders.  During the cocktail hour and dinner Spencer put together a unique mix that was somehow non-intrusive during conversation but completely captivating when listening to the music.  We knew early on we had made the right choice.

And finally, the dance party...  We had no idea what to expect, since we had agreed early on that Spencer would put his artistic intuition to work (that's why we hired him - we weren't looking to have somebody shuffle our personal iPod playlists).  Man, Spencer really got the crowd going.  Everybody - I mean *everybody* - was out on the dance floor all night, and that's what my wife and I wanted.  Spencer played an eclectic mix that grooved with the crowd while opportunely adding in the handful of songs we wanted him to play.  Everything was flawless.

Oh yes, and the last DJ litmus test: everybody we talked to during and after the wedding was crazy about the DJ.

I've already written more than I set out to...  We can't say enough good things about Spencer, and can't recommend him highly enough.  The man is a true professional and a true artist.

I knew what I did not want in a DJ - cheesy introductions, any music that came with choreography, or a loudmouth who made the night about them.  Beyond that, I really just wanted someone with a great ear for music and eye for a crowd.

Dustin was the perfect choice for us.  He's a really nice guy and very friendly to work with leading up to the wedding.  He was super receptive to our ideas and preferences and never made me feel back for liking terrible pop music.  On the big day Dustin talked when he needed to, kept the dance tunes flowing, and was never intrusive.  Also, Spencer made everything super easy on the business end, so that was nice!

I've already recommended Style Matters to a few friends getting married in Chicago, I decided I probably should get off my lazy bum and recommend them on Yelp!

    -Updated Review-
Now that the wedding has passed, guests have gone home, and I am relaxing on my honeymoon, as promised I owe Style Matters a updated review.  Unfortunately, I am having troubles putting into words how outstanding Style Matters actually is.  Spencer (our DJ and the owner) did an absolutely amazing job, the dance floor was never empty, he had everyone out there dancing their tail off from 8:00 - 11:00 when the venue raised the lights and kicked us out.  Every one of my guests complimented us on getting married AND how awesome the DJ was.  Some of my guests even wanted pictures with Spencer!  Not only did he play great music, but he did a great job at controlling the flow of events during the entire night and really had control of the crowd, which allowed me and my bride to do what we needed to do.

We also hired Style Matters string trio to play at our ceremony as well, during the ceremony they did an outstanding job, especially considering the wedding actually started about 20minutes late due to the lovely Chicago traffic.  Even with this delay, they played on and kept the crowd entertained.  Not only are they great at their craft, they are all very professional and really likeable guys.  If you are looking for a string trio for your wedding, or probably any other type of event, these are your go-to guys.

I could babble on here for hours as to how great Style Matters was, but if I had to pick one word to sum it up, it would be "WOW!"

Great job Spencer, you run on heck of a company and are the definition of what a 5 star company should be.

    -------------------------------------------------- ----------
My fiance Katy and I are using Style Matters to DJ our wedding this fall.  We have been working with Spencer Lokken and so far we have been impressed with his level of service and dedication to making our special day the best it can be.

What I liked most about his DJ services is that he and his DJ's don't play the normal Hokey Pokey, Electric Slide, and any other cheesy song you could think of (unless your guests really want to hear it).  Even if he has to play one of the songs listed above, Spencer and his crew will mix it up so everyone will love it.

I'll update this review later this year after I see Spencer perform first hand, but I don't have any doubt that the music will be spectacular.

One thing everyone tells you before your wedding day is "Something is going to go wrong, there's always one thing, so just be prepared and don't stress about it" Well, absolutely nothing went wrong on our wedding day (8/29/2009) and we owe so much of that to Spencer! We were lucky enough to have String Theory play our ceremony and Spencer for our Reception, and we could not be happier with how smoothly things went. Spencer is professional, responsive, uber-helpful, and 100% sincere in his intentions to give you the best wedding ever.

Our dance floor was packed from the get go and stayed that way all night. We got tons of compliments throughout the night, even about music that was playing during the cocktail hour and dinner service! Here are a few quotes from the evening:

"Air, Fleet Foxes, and the string quartet version of Flashing Lights?! Amazing!" -Cousin Eric

"I can't remember a wedding where I've danced so much, or had so much fun" -Mom's Friend Sue

"Oh, we're booking him" - Bridesmaid's Dad who (formerly) insisted his daughter have a band

"Best. DJ. EVER!" - About 100 different guests

    "I do." - Me

Most importantly, my husband and I had an absolute blast and felt completely at ease on our wedding day, thanks to Spencer & Style Matters. You cannot go wrong with booking this company for any event. Your expectations will be exceeded, no question about it.

When it was time to find a DJ for my wedding, I had been given names of a few DJ companies. I had friends who were at a wedding where Style Matters was the company they used and everyone raved about them. We met Spencer, the owner, at his apartment and filled him on our wedding plans, some of our likes, dislikes and he gave us things to think about. We didn't look any further and booked them as our DJ. Several months later we were given Max as our specific DJ. After some emails with song lists, we met with Max for a little bit and nailed down a good outline for our wedding.

Once the wedding day was upon us, Max was perfect. He mixed in a variety of songs throughout the whole night. From the minute the dance floor opened, it was always packed.

Both Spencer and Max were always prompt with their emails and information for us. My husband and I definitely recommend Styles Matters!

While I ultimately did not get to have the pleasure of using Style Matters' services, my interactions with Spencer were nothing but professional and wonderful!

I contacted Style Matters via their website around this time last year for a fundraiser and heard back from Spencer, the owner, the next day. We agreed to meet and I went to his office/apartment a few days later.

We discussed what type of music I was interested in, the mood of the event, etc. Upon learning that it was an event to raise money for an all-female foundation, he told me about one of his female DJs who he thought would love to do such an event.

Our communication thereafter was timely and informative. Unfortunately I ended up having to cancel the event, but Spencer was extremely understanding and also very patient as it took us an unacceptably long time to get him the deposit money we had agreed to pay him (unfortunately I was not the one in charge of the checkbook).

If I ever have to plan another event Spencer will be my first phone call, without a doubt!

We had Dustin from Style Matters spin at our wedding (12.31.09) and he did a FABULOUS job.  Extra pressure that it was NYE and that my taste in music is the polar opposite of my fiance's taste in music.

Dustin pulled it off with style, leveraging some CDs that we provided with samples of our "likes" - while he played some of those songs he had full DJ license to play anything.  He was a great MC, making announcements when we asked him to, and a consummate professional yet totally laid back and cool!

He enforced our DNP list and had some cooler versions of songs - clubbed out version of Auld Lang Syne that rocked and a souped up version of Sweet Caroline that had everyone on the dance floor.

Our dance floor was packed with ppl moving and shaking to the beat!  I cannot wait for the mp3 (yes, you can order the recording of what was played!).

Kudos to Spencer for having such a great group of DJs and to Dustin who helped us ring in 2010 and make our day so special!

These guys were awesome!  From the initial meeting with owner/manager Spence, to the second meeting with DJ Noah, to the actual wedding night.

Needless to say planning a wedding is a ridiculously difficult task and its crucial to get all your ducks in a row before the big day - not just so it goes smoothly but for peace of mind during the whole planning process.

These guys are meticulous as to what kind of music you love, what you like and what you hate.  They also take great pride in creating their own playlist and creating the right mood at the right time.

And as a note, I work in the film business and I know how hard it is to find creative people who are business savvy, communicative and well organized, and these guys definitely fit the bill.

In a nutshell, we gave these guys our criteria, they listened, and we didn't have to worry about a thing after that (which is the most you can ask for from a wedding vendor); and sure enough Noah set-up, spun great music, took care of the video presentation, nailed the announcements, and kept a great attitude throughout.  A+++

    Music makes a reception.

That's why I highly endorse Spencer Lokken of StyleMattersDjs.  He is a unique balance of professional and hip.  As a bride, I was worried about finding someone tastefully creative, but who I could rely on and work with easily.  Spencer is that professional.

As a result, our dealings with him went smoothly.  He drew out from us what we were looking for and executed it perfectly.  In fact, he even coordinated the music of our emotional ceremony.  He handled that pressure-filled job expertly.

When it came to the cocktail music and reception, he played music that everyone raved about.  He doesn't just play a song, then another song, etc.  He actually transitions the music to keep the party going.  Even our vendors remarked that he was the best they had ever heard.  Now our wedding coordinator can't stop recommending him.  I just can't express enough how utterly influential he was.  He truly made our reception!

Bottom line:  If you're a couple looking to 1) give your guests an amazing reception and 2) not worry about one more thing on your wedding day, hire Spencer.  You will not regret it.

Laura L's husband chiming in with a "guy's side" review:

Spencer Lokken & Style Matters did our wedding and were, in a word, (or, two) #$!@** Awesome!  People told us after our wedding that not only was our wedding one of the best that they'd been to, but one of the best PARTIES that they'd been to in a long, long, time.  Compliments didn't just come from the guests, either, RECEPTION STAFF! were giving compliments -- phrases like "the best DJ we've heard" -- not "heard at a wedding" -- just "heard."

If you are a complete moron, Spencer and Style Matters is probably not for you.  You'd waste his talents playing "Celebration" and the "Chicken Dance."  Spare Spencer (and yourself) that humiliation!  But, if you want to host one of the coolest parties you've ever hosted, look no further.  Cocktail lounge music, dinner jazz, and uber-hip dance music.  Yep.  That good.

I'm new to Yelp, but one of the first people I wanted to look up were Spencer and Style Matters. Nate did my wedding in November and he was AMAZING! He had the dance floor full for 4+ straight hours! He knew when to change the music up because he understood the feel of the room to change it up and get everyone to stay on the dance floor.

Spencer is exactly who you would want in charge of the music at your wedding. He is VERY interested in how you want the music and then picks the perfect DJ for you. He me with my wife and I a couple times just to feel us out and he definitely picked the best DJ for us in Nate.

I cannot imagine a better DJ company doing a wedding and have recommended Spencer to several of my friends already!

What can I say about Style Matters?  Max was an absolute pleasure to work with!  I was very impressed with his organization.  My wedding was in June and we hired Max from Style Matters to be our DJ.  What was impressive was that Max and I hit it off musically from our first conversation.  We talked about MGMT, M83, and Vampire Weekend while we were on the phone and I knew that our wedding was going to be amazing with regards to the music.

Furthermore, Max accommodated us and met with us at our home, which is on the south side of Chicago and if I remember correctly, Max drove from the North side in a bad storm to get there.  My wife had cinnamon rolls from scratch for him when he got to our house for making the trek.  We had a fantastic conversation about music and what our guests would like and dislike.

Fast forward to the wedding day. Max was more than organized and he played a bigger role in our wedding than I had originally anticipated!  It was a hectic day to say the least, and as unorganized as other things were that day, Max had us calmed down and we were able to relax just a little bit.  Max played so many good songs that my guests liked and I don't think there was one song that the dance floor wasn't packed.  He wasn't cheesy either. I've been to weddings where the DJ has that "DJ voice"....(you know what I'm talking about). Everything was ultra cool.  We had Mazzy Star, Andy Williams, The Clash, and M83 among a wide variety of dinner music.

Everyone was really happy with the music, which is a huge factor in the "fun-ness" of a wedding.

We couldn't be happier with Max.  He was phenomenal!
