Someone on my Facebook account is responsible for our chance exploration of Stumptown Coffee on Division. We were eating at Pok Pok, down the street, and I noticed they brewed Stumptown on their menu. When we finished up lunch we drove up the street to the coffee shop to get an afternoon fix.

The first thing I noticed was the huge coffee roaster going in the back of the room behind the bar. This thing was huge and unlike anything I had seen before. A gentlemen was standing there watching the beans and I asked him about the whole bean coffees. I won't bore you with all the coffee details, but as a coffee geek, I was in heaven. I ended up buying three bags of coffee to take home with me; no Stumptowns in Vegas! I bought the Columbian, Kenyan, and Guatemalan to get me started.

I couldn't leave without my Iced Americano, either, and it was excellent. The espresso flavor was amazing and not burnt like some other coffee places. The flavors reminded me of dark chocolate, caramel, and  some faint vanilla. It had a lovely and bright acidity, too!

They have a great website and they also ship!

What was I thinking?  4 stars?

On my last voyage to Stumptown, I was blinded by all the work I wanted to get done and finding open seating.  This time, I was able to savor my Stumptown experience.  How the eff I didn't notice the giant roaster in the front room before, I don't know.  They were also ridiculously busy last time and I don't do so well when walking through my cafe feels like carrying a drink through a nightclub (you know what I mean).

Anyway, a few things I didn't take into consideration last time:

- They roast in-house.  Always nice to walk up to the store with that aroma in the air.  (They also have a decent selection of their roasts available by the pound - some are even direct trade beans!).

- The breve option is listed on the menu.  Nice.  1 please!  Not many people know or order this baby, but it's the holy grail in my culture.

- I love watching the baristas work.  They have a slightly different system than I usually see.  Methodical and smooth, always friendly.

- I heart the peeps behind the counter.  The line was around the corner (literally) and I totally didn't have to wait long at all after I placed my order.  Yet my barista totally slipped me an extra shot in my breve (which made it a quadruple... yikes!).  But don't tell anyone - he said to keep it on the DL (sorry, man!).

The most important thing about Stumptown is that they're pure of heart.  Or something like that.  Stumptown is a local coffeehouse in its truest form.  I hereby dub thee a top-notch caffeination station!

Everyone loves Stumptown. I don't understand why. When I went to their store I was treated very badly from the start. I don't know what I did but the girl laughed at me in front of the entire store. It was a busy Saturday morning and everyone joined in. All I did was order a grande mocha.

I ran out the front of the establishment in tears. Luckily the crowd didn't give chase. I ran and ran until I came upon a nearby Starbuck. The barista's there saw that I was distraught and brought me in. The gave me a grande, extra hot Mocha, with whip.

I won't be returning to Stumptown any time soon.

Stumptown. Rivals my love for Vivace, I won't lie. You all know how I do love sneaking around with other coffee shops. The thing is, I'm personally in love with the city of Portland. I would live there if I could, do everything there if I could. It doesn't help that the best espresso and tea come from Portland either. It makes it that much harder  Stumptown has amazing whole bean selection, and tea, which to my surprise they happily make for you for a cheaper price than...the competition. Yeah, I'll tell you the downside--whole bean coffee is a little pricier here. The tea, is a lot cheaper. How this works, I do not know. The quality is phenomenal, never the less, and I am a loyal fan

Great coffee, but always way overcrowded and the baristas have been a little snippy or outright apathetic every time I've been in. Prefer the Belmont stumptown. B.O. can be a real problem in here.

I live in California but I was visiting my boyfriend in Portland and he took me to Stumptown. I was glad when he did, usually I like more sugary drinks because lattes taste plain to me unless there is vanilla or caramel in them. However, Stumptown does not have sugary coffee and I decided to try their latte. It was wonderful! I really usually do not like just lattes but it was chocolately and strong! My boyfriend's mother also brewed the Guatemala coffee and I drank it without anything in it because it tasted great by itself! Out of my three weeks in Portland I visited Stumptown a lot and came home with three bags of their coffee. Now my mom is asking me to get some more coffee because we almost finished it all! The coffee is on the more expensive side but it is great quality. Luck for me they sell their coffee online!

Best coffee, period. Had it while visiting Portland and now order it for delivery to Boston. They fresh roast and ship out quickly.

I recommend Hair Bender if you like dark. All the usual marketing around coffee, likening the flavors and aroma to those of wine and peppered with language of nuance and bouquet, are actually valid with regard to Stumptown.

On my last day visiting my brother in Portland and seeing Stumptown served in every single restaurant we ate at in those three days (seriously, 3+ meals a day, Stumptown served at every single place) i had to stop at an actual Stumptown location and stock up on some goods to take home.

And stock up i did, to the tune of about $40 worth of beans. The whole bit lasted us about 2 weeks, and holy crap was it good. I took it to work and knocked the socks off of my Peet's loving co-workers.

I bought a french press too, just so i could drink my Stumptown. No i'm out of it and drinking coffee from beans i got at Trader Joe's. It's decent, but it ain't no Stumptown.

Turns out you can buy coffee from their website and they'll ship it to you. How long i can hold out before it comes to that?

This coffee shop was connected to the hotel (Ace Hotel) I stayed in while in Portland recently---its aroma filled the lobby hotel.  I was having a late start and made a stop here around 1pm, but this coffee shop was busy and there was a little line (but, the baristas were efficient, organized, and & hooked me up).

I try use my own cup when getting coffee (always on the eco-tip, my friend), but I'm not much of a coffee drinker.  So, I asked the barista-dude what was their specialty, and he recommended a latte.  I was gifted a latte with a cool heart designed in the yummy-smelling froth.  Yeah, I can see the hype about this place and their concoctions.

Oh yeah, they also had some very tasty-looking baked goods (I was onto Voodoo, though).

The best coffee I've ever had in my life.  My girlfriend says it's Victrola in Seattle, but no no no, this is what's really good.

It's like this:  The place is funky.  The people are friendly.  The coffee has a pleth of flavors that you can actually identify like you would in an interesting glass of wine.

They french press their beans...which is how anyone who knows what they're doing (and has the time) should be drinking coffee.  They have self-serve for cups to-go.  The table to fix up your coffee has honey, simple syrup, sugar in the raw, organic sugar, and some other stuff I don't even know about I'm sure.  I don't drink much espresso, but it smells very dangerous.  This is what I buy when I want to drink coffee.  Desperation moments are excusable, but when you live in this great place, which has this quality coffee, there's no excuse to want to drink much else.

We had to order some coffee before the long drive to our Seattle day trip. The coffee is pressed instead of dripped which was excellent. The coffee was bolded roasted but not over powering.

The pastries looked good too but we had some muffins so we did not ordered any. =( A croissant would have been nice.

I already love you because of the wonders your roasts do in my mouth, and the fact that your masterwork is only a short walking distance from my place.

That you were open on Christmas morning allowing those of us with dragons to chase (so to speak) to enjoy freshly prepared espresso drinks has now found you a spot among the beneficiaries of my estate when I finally kick the bucket.

The decaf Americano bearing that distinct Stumptown gusto was-- apart from the birth of our lord and savior-- quite possibly the best Christmas present this fair-weather Catholic could ever deserve.

Now, I just have to win that Powerball jackpot so that I can more succinctly divvy out the inheritances...

In my almost 2 + decades on this earth, most of my time has been spent on an epic quest to find the perfect cup of coffee. I've flown into battle on the wings of a Pegasus, slayed a dragon on the edge of a cliff overlooking a misty forest, impregnated a fairy princess, and joined a guild that raided a castle filled with gangrenous elves.

Just to find some decent fucking coffee.

Stumptown might just be the place where I can lay down my jewel-encrusted sword  (which I found sticking out of the corpse of a giant cyclops, by the way ). The people that work here are a little weird, but they're not anything like those screeching banshees at Starbucks who will cast a spell on you if you dare say "double" instead of "grande."

In my quest for coffee, I have waited in lines longer than the Nile just to sample cups of tepid sweat-flavored water. I have suffered through wind, rain, and fire to be served a latte with spoiled milk. I've climbed cliffs ripe with goblins to drink an Americano that was more like an Ameri'CRAP'o. Am I right? Am I right?

The people at Stumptown can foam milk like angels. It's like drinking a delicious foamy, milky piece of heaven with my perfectly pulled shot of espresso.

Coming here is like the quintessential Portland experience. And there were no dragons.

Stumptown. Simply, a delight.

After working at a cafe, I became a bit of an espresso snob. (just a little one). And, I can say that my latte here definitely hit the spot. Not too much foam; the foam had a great consistency, and the flavor....the flavor!  Oooo.

I was at 3rd and Ash...and the ambiance there is really retro-modern chic. The best part was that they had an old school/new school dj booth there where employees played some good tunes.

Something else I really appreciate... the graphics. the punch card, the sign outside...all those little things gave it a subtle extra flair.

Finally, a coffee shop that rivals my dear Coffee Cat in Scotts Valley, CA.
On-sight roaster, baristas who know their stuff and great cap-art (of course, I can do better, but whatevs).

The space is cute. The two rooms that make up the place both boast comfortable seating areas. Some days they lift the garage door that doubles for the front wall of the second room. It's definitely one of those places where you can sit for hours, working or just people watching. The bagels seem to be always fresh and with a soy capp, complete a great Saturday morning breakfast.

The baristas are kind of snobs -- yeah, I went through three hours of one-on-one cappuccino training, two hours listening about the science of coffee and an hour going over the history of the modern coffee shop and I'm not a snob about it. Oh well, I guess that's kind of their 'thing.'

I'm starting to think that Stumptown is just as quintessential Portland as Powell's. And as much as I want to hate all things trendy, I have to admit that I do like Stutmptown coffee. What is it about their Costa Rica blend that is sorta sweet? And their French blend is... rich and full. Wow I feel like a super snob, using these terms to describe coffee.

As far as atmosphere, I have to admit that this coffee shop in NW is kind of austere. It's not the type of place I'd go to relax with friends and chat, more of a place to study or nerd out on the computer. In any case, it doesn't hurt to run in and out to grab a cup of Jo or 1/2 lb of beans.

I knew I wandered into the right coffeehouse when I heard M83's "Until the Night Is Over" playing overhead. Score! Also, it was during that gale-force rainstorm in May. Double score!

The folks at Stumptown are the real deal, McNeil. The espresso was tightly packed and had the right amount of timber and flavor. I've rarely ever had it this good in California (pity me!), with each cup being consistent and full-flavored. They even tamp shots elbow-over, which is a rarity these days (well, at least here in Sac.)

The space is equally awesome, with vaulted ceilings, cool art on the walls, plenty of table AND bar space, a full magazine rack (Ready Made, Adbusters, Magnet, etc. -YES!) and an awesome staff (all with equally awesome tattoos, to boot!)

Stumptown Coffee is the shit. Next visit, I'm so there, packin' oodles of mix CD's for the shop!

Caveat: The hipster quotient is high - behind and before the counter. Prentention abounds, but... Here I sincerely think it's well-earned.

The product is superior. I've been a coffee connoisseur for decades, I've worked in some of the top-rated coffee-slinging joints in the country, and I'm pretty confident that nobody makes a better cup of drip coffee than Stumptown. Their selection of bean varietals is simply outstanding, their roasters know exactly how to bring the best flavor characteristics out of their roasts, and brewing the "drip" coffee via French press just brings all that subtle and sophisticated coffee loveliness to the forefront from first sip to the last. The pull perfect ristretto shots, handsomely full-bodied, never bitter, just the right smattering of fruity acidity. I've ordered across the board here and have never been disappointed with a beverage - the drip coffee is what really keeps me coming back, though.

It's pricey - $2 for 12oz, $2.50 for 16oz... But the product is so superior to the competition, I think it's worth it.

Okay, it was the 3rd day of a severely low-carb diet. My head was light, the rest of me abuzz with the vibrancy of too-little sleep and the need for pasta. My brother took me into Stumptown Coffee to fortify me for some hard-core thrift shopping for my soon-to-be-suave new figure. I could have eaten the air, the smell of coffee was so good. The line (at 3 in the pm) was at least 12 people deep. What I paid for our coffees together was more than we spent the rest of the day. But you know what? IT WAS WORTH IT. It was Coffeevana, Coffeeopia, Coffee.... whatever, it was really, really good coffee. I went back once more after getting back into a more sane calorie regimen to assure myself it wasn't a mirage of my sugar-starved brain. It wasn't. I seriously think this is probably the best coffee this side of Paris. It's true. Give'em all the stars and more!

Oh snap!

I really liked this place. I ordered a latte which was delicious. It also had a foam tree decoration which I had never seen before and that (besides landing on the moon) is probably one of the hardest things to do... In the world. Overall it was one of the best lattes that I've had in my young life.

The ambience was pretty cool too. The store was narrow yet seemed almost wide open. When you order coffee in you get it served to you in a big white porcelain mug. It made me feel like David Schwimmer at the Central Perk in an episode of friends. And everyone knows that Swhimmer is a badass.

Expect a lot of hipsters on their apple computers. I actually like this sort of thing because I can talk about them in order to mask my own insecurities.

Anyways. Forget starbucks. Go to strumptown. Also, make sure one of your friends buys a bag of coffee and then walk by them when they are brewing it so they offer you a cup. W00t!

I've always liked Stumptown's coffee beans and I *used* to really like their coffee drinks, but the last two times I went (to the Division location anyway), my coffee (an espresso & a cappuccino) was horrible.  I've heard all about how well they train their baristas (anyone that's tried to get a job in this town has no doubt heard the question "Are you Stumptown-trained?), so I can only guess that some of these employees just don't really care as much about making good coffee as they do getting a paycheck.  It's really sad.  I don't want to stop going here, but I don't want to risk terrible coffee again.

I will say though that, contrary to what some people here have said, the baristas have always been very friendly to me here, and I've never encountered any kind of attitude from them.

Alright.  I'm sure this place has enough reviews, which is why I'll keep it short and sweet.  I just feel like I have to share my perfect experience with others.  The employees were very sweet.  I had the best latte of my life here.  Perfect foam, perfect temperature, not to sweet...and it was still delicious an hour later when I finished the last few sips.  I was also going to purchase a slice of banana bread, when they informed me it was actually ZUCCHINI BREAD.  Sweet Jesus...it's like the coffee and bakery gods knew exactly how to speak to my heart.  And all for about five bucks.

Although I had a great Americano here, I don't know that I'd really ever have to return. The line at 3pm was ridiculous, and the spacing in there is totally crap for standing in line. You're in everyone's way, and it's annoying to be "on display" for everyone in the entire shop. I would not say that this would be a good place to study - as there are far too many people in this place all the time, but it's definitely good for people-watching - even if you don't want to watch other people you have no choice.

Barista was decently nice, but nothing spectacular... and the coffee was what I expected. Good.

Best goddamned coffeeshop I've ever been to.

No, seriously.

I insist on having a straight shot of espresso from the machine from every shop I try before getting a latte - and let me tell you kids, these guys know what's up.  The short shot was almost totally pure crema, with just a spare dot of black in the bottom of the demitasse.  Oh hell yes.

Their latte art and general barista skills here are unsurpassed.  I am happily drinking their coffee on my way to work from my french press in the mornings all the way here on the East Coast; and on my next visit back to PDX, I will be here.  Oh yes, I will be here.

Stumptown coffee is incredible.  Why?  Because it has a refreshing hint of elderberry and a slight, not vulgar, distinctly nutty finish.

C'mon!!  Do I look like I know how one coffee bean tastes different from another?  I thought coffee grew on trees in freeze-dried crystal form until I was twenty... I can't tell you what makes Stumptown coffee so obscenely delicious!

But I can tell you that if you try any other coffee in the city of Portland, you're cheating yourself.  Stumptown is amazing.  You can taste the difference.  (Stumptown could use that as their motto, but guess what?  I just trademarked it, just now, and it will cost them a LOT of money to use my trademarked catchphrase.  So think again, Stumptown.)

Here's the thing about Stumptown, though: whenever possible, drink Stumptown coffee at almost any place *except* an actual Stumptown cafe.

Why?  Because they aren't the friendliest places on planet Earth.

Take the Belmont store, for instance.  Delicious product, not much room to sit, and more likely than not you'll get served by a barista who can't believe s/he must resort to serving you coffee.

Look, I'm not casting aspersions here.  I understand, believe me!  I would feel exactly the same way if I were in their place, looked as good as they do, and played in an indie band that's truly going nowhere fast.  I'd be bitter.  But that doesn't change the fact that I'd rather have my coffee beverage served to me with a smile... or something like a smile... or even a sneer.  I'd take a sneer over the blank stare hinting at barely suppressed disdain.

See, I can't tell you much about coffee -- but I sure know my blank stares.

Some of the baristas, I must confess, are friendly.  And once or twice I've even seen the generally unfriendly ones show a little kindness.

But then you have to deal with the customers.  Don't look at them.  They are much cooler than you.

And the ones who aren't cooler than you?  They don't exist, because they're ALL cooler than you.

Honestly, I kind of love the Stumptown hipsters -- the ones behind the coffee bar and on the "undeserving peon" side.  There's something so Southeast Portland about them.  I used to be bitter, but then I remembered something my mom used to tell me when I was a boy in short pants: "Two bitters don't make a sweet."  I might be misremembering...

Anyway, my point is, Stumptown is four walls full of great coffee and genuine, accept-no-substitute Portland hipsters who will regard you with varying degrees of condescension and indifference.

If you can handle all that -- embrace it, even -- and somehow find a place to actually sit down in the cafe, then perhaps you're worthy of sitting among them.

Me, I'm gonna get my delicious Stumptown mochas from Fresh Pot.

I stop by on a regular basis and they are always good to me. No matter how busy they get my order right. The best coffee period. The treat case has great food. This is what Portland is all about!
