Monica is my girl! One time I made the mistake of getting my hair did at a spa event and they not only cut my hair dry but outright butchered it so that it was uneven. "Edgy," they called it. I wanted to cry! I looked like an effed-up Dudley Moore/Joan Jett hybrid. In any case, I dashed on over to Studio DNA to visit my hairdresser Monica and not only did she wipe my tears away but she fixed my don't. I even got a ton of compliments on my fixed hairdo even though I was still feeling shy about how short it was.

Definitely my hairstylist for life. What I especially like is that she's easy to talk to. Most times I hate having to make small talk with people who cut my hair but not the case here. She's a ton of fun, a good listener and I totally trust her opinion on what style looks good on me.

Oh! and I got the head massage I was looking forward to. So nice!

BTW, if you come on Saturdays you get complimentary mimosas! In pilsner glasses! Sip slowly though so you won't pass out in the chair. They also have coffee and muffins from Funnel Mill next door. For free!

I went in as a guinea pig for their $30 monday night coloring sessions. I've been a guinea pig before at frederick fekkai, and I knew it would be a while, but this ended up taking about 4 hours, as I was the last one to be serviced.  However, the color came out great. They are fantastic about overseeing the work as it is done, and friendly about making sure you're comfortable during the whole session.

The only reason I'm docking it a star is that I was hoping to get a trim while I was there.  While they said it was primarily a focus on color, they would probably have time to do it.   Seeing that I was the last one to be serviced and waited about an hour and a half before I was sitting in a chair, it did not happen.  I was very disappointed but they said they would follow up and try to fit me in quickly during another Monday guinea pig session.

I waited patiently but I never did get that call, so I'm disappointed they did not follow through with their offer, especially after they had been so nice in every other respect.

PARKING: Plenty O' Street Parking!

I've been seeing Sasha for cut and color for almost a year now, and I can't believe I'm only now writing her up. She knows my hair better than I do, and I always get compliments on her work. Unlike any other stylist I've had before, she remembers the details about me - which way my hair parts, where I'm battling a cowlick, how I like my hair to fall. This sort of knowledge is invaluable, and I trust her completely.

As for Studio DNA itself, it's friendly and very stylish with great products. I always love how my hair smells when I leave. They also offer the occasional blow-drying class. I went to one in the summer and highly recommend it - I got all sorts of useful tips and techniques.

Stephanie is a highlighting goddess!

Studio DNA is a sexy salon that oozes style. Be ready to start feeling pampered the second you step in, from the herbal teas to the light snacks to the comfy chairs and sparkly decor. Street parking is easy to find and free after 6pm.

I met Stephanie via yelp and put my hair in her hands. She selected some lovely caramel highlights for me and did a half set with the support of the salon owner, Danny. I got just what I wanted, shine and warm, pretty, subtle color that brought out my features without being obnoxious or over-the-top.

Thank you Stephanie and the entire Studio DNA team!

Monica is great, Monica is good. And DNA overall gets my high ratings.

I've been coming her since spring 2009; I think today's visit makes it my 4th or 5th visit.  Hairstylist Monica takes into consideration my wants and how my hair works, to give me super-looking results.

She also uses a bunch of great products, tending to each strand, to make sure my hair has tons of volume and sleek shine when I walk out.  Holla!~

Every haircut is better than the previous one; she doesn't get lazy and give you the same ol' same ol'.  And she's super easy to talk with.  Like someone else's review on here, it's not obligatory chit-chat, but fun, comfortable conversation.  Monica and the rest of the staff are a good, warm, hard-working, sociable bunch.

And during today's visit, I had to do some work on my laptop, so she was cool doing her work while I did mine.

Pluses: I love the phone receptionists. They're warm and helpful on the phone when making appointments...in comparison to some other hair shops where it sounds like they couldn't care any less whether or not you come in (and sometimes, like they're annoyed at you for actually calling).  The people who do the hairwashes at the basin always give awesome massages.  And, DNA has a cute section with great coffee, tea, water, and snacks.

Overall, it makes for a pleasant, easygoing experience where you feel welcomed.

* Usually, I come in for haircut & highlights/lowlights, and it's usually around $225.  Definitely worth it, as I walk out super happy with my hair, and it grows out very nicely.  All worth it!

Of all the hairdressers in all the world, I like Aubrey the best. I have never been so incredibly satisfied with a haircut in my entire life. Every time I walk out of the salon I feel all happy and sexy with my awesome blowout. And the next day, my hair is so easy to style and looks fabulous with minimal effort. There's nothing more that needs to be said. Go. Emerge more fabulous than ever. Thank me for it.

Dont waste your time/money!

I came here to get a new look. I wanted blonde with brown highlights (my hair is med. brown). I left with orange hair and blonde highlights, and the same exact hairstyle I came in with. I went back to have them fix it, and can you believe she dyed my hair back to brown, the color I walked in there with!? Did I mention I paid over $400.00 for this!

Please take a look at my album, and decide for yourself!

I was referred by a friend to Studio DNA. I made an appointment with Tina, who is wonderful. I have thick Asian hair so its nearly impossible to find someone who understands my concerns and knows how to cut my hair.
But Tina is amazing. I walked in and it was like she read my mind: her suggestion was exactly what I was looking for.
The only reason why I didn't give 5 stars is because when I went to pay, they charged me a higher price than what Tina used to charge. Apparently, she got boosted up to a higher price level and they did not inform me. Either way, Tina is amazing and knows exactly what to do with my thick coarse hair.

I have spent the last 4 years having my hair done back in my old home town, which is 5 hours away!
I am so happy I found Studio DNA.  I had my hair cut and my highlights brightened... Sasha did a great job.  I rarely leave a salon actually liking my hair right away ~ but this was an overall good experience.  Sasha really took her time with me.  She was friendly and professional.  The salon is nice and the staff is helpful.
I think I finally found my spot! yay!

Monica is fantastic. I went in for the first time determined to start really taking care of my long, wavy hair. She trimmed it, updated my bangs and helped me figure out a good color. She spent a lot of time with me and was warm, friendly and very helpful. She got me excited about my hair again!

The salon itself is pleasant; they offer tea, coffee, water (with lemon!) and candies(!!) ~ lots of good magazines, too.

I had to move Studio DNA back to 4 stars because the owner promptly followed up with me and offered to give me a refund the next time I came in.  The management is attentive and professional, which is really nice.

I was nervous about how Tina was going to react, but it was fine.  She did, however, insist she asked me about applying the toner, which she definitley did not.  Whatevs.

I am very happy with the haircut I got from Sasha. I chose her based on Yelp reviews and it was great! I went in with a hairstyle that I hated (bad bangs) and she cut a new hairstyle with layers that would make it easy for me to grow out the bangs. I love it!  Bonus points: She did some cutting after drying and styling my hair to make sure it was perfect. I can't even remember the last time a stylist took time to do that!

I can't believe I've been going to Summer here at Studio DNA for almost a year now and this is the first time I've used the bathroom. Anyway, it's as awesome as the rest of the place. The last time I was here was over 3 months ago. I've simply been super busy. The staff is still top notch, across the board, and the service is impeccable.

Summer just brought me a mimosa to sip on while I marinade in red, pink and orange awesome sauce. God I love it here.

Just me...=(     my other half is in San Francisco so he won't be commenting! ^_^

This review is entirely devoted to my beloved ultra amazing SUMMER!! GAHHHH!! I LOVE HER SO MUCH!!!! So I walked into the store and this guy  and a happy bubbly girl instantly greeted me and told me that there were yummy refreshments and snacks to eat while I wait!! YUM YUM!! But considering the fact that I have salonphobia (many stylists have always cut off WAY MORE than what I want) I didn't eat any of the snacks!

I was then sat down in a consultation chair and was immediately greeted by Summer!! I addressed my deep fear of her hacking off my hair and she immediately calmed me down by saying "No worries, your hair is pretty healthy this is all we'll have to cut off (1/2?? inch) WHEW!
Next came the AMAZING hair washing experience of my life, kudos for the girl that once had really long hair but once she reached beauty school decided to hack it off. AMAZING job she did! I liked her a lot and was very sweet, even offered me something to drink!!

Part II
My haircut was quite the most amazing experience EVER!! Summer was so friendly and wasn't the least bit of a snob like the other stylists I've been to, orrrrrrrr "Yeah, uh huh, oh really, no way!!" type of stylist which I hate. ^_^ brownie points for Summer! We talked about our experience here so far considering that we both just moved here approximately two years ago.  Soooo niceee!! and the haircut was TOTALLY FAB!! she blew out my ultra asian straight hair  into that Top Model Anglo Chic whooshy hair. I was whooshing it all the way home! haha!  OOOH YEAH! she also gave me a tip to get the same look for my bangs too! ( A deep side part does the trick! and when its dry flip it over and let it fall)

Total Cost: 110 but I mentioned yelp so YAY!! 20% OFF!!!!! btw Summer was also helpful with all my questions too ie: boar bristle brushes and a hair supplements. ^_^ My haircut is amazing! She kept the length and added lots of fun whooshy model layers!!!! Just what I've always wanted!! totally awesome sassy hair! hehe! ooh yeah if it'll totally boost up the salon's resume they're doing LA Fashion Week!!! how cool is that? pretty awesome I say!! LOVE SALON DNA!!

Regardless whether you have no idea whatsoever in which direction to head with your hair, or whether you call your current haircut "Arthur," Studio DNA can help you in each case.

Having found this place on Yelp, my two-wheeled bird and I flew to Santa Monica (park in their garage, forget street parking) for stylistic insights and scissorfull (now it's a word) adventures.

I got a gal named Summer because I specifically asked for a stylist and not just a hair-dresser. Summer turned out to be an awesome person, superb stylist (great eye!) and a highly-decorated professional in her field (I will not give away her credentials, but it's analogous to those of Ted Kennedy in relation to social programmes).

Since I am not that close to my hair as previously (e.g. ritualistic bumble&bumbling), I really needed to end the Adrian Greiner thing, start a euro thing, and lighten it up for the summer.

Ergo, I've been here 3 times so far, and loved:

1) Faux-hawk
2) Shorter, messy (cut w a razor) hair
3) Short hair with sides at 2, top at 3 i think
4) Sumo wax - excellent product, with more hold than pomade/gel
6) Summer's personal style
7) Conversations with Summer
8) Salon vibe (complementary water/tea/snacks)

Due to the recession, the last time my hair was cut was about a month ago when a razor conspired with my bathroom mirror.

Sitting here, on a January evening, I do miss Summer. Sure, you'll end up paying at least 25% more for your haircut, but having done so, you will
1) Never doubt its quality
2) Never underestimate its aesthetic value
3) Miss Summer-time

...and the livin' is easy!

I'm a guy and very particular about my hair because when it's cut bad I think I look bad. I've been to a few other quality places including Chris McMillan which charges $100 for a guys haircut (they do many celebrities). I saw a coupon for 20% off and I was already looking for a haircut so after searching Yelp I went to Studio DNA and got Tina. My hair is thinning a bit so it was important to me that the person who cuts my hair makes it balanced and look good. Tina did an excellent job! I'm very pleased and will be requesting her for my next haircut.

Update: 2nd cut from Tina and im hooked.

Wow it looks like I'm the only one who had a bad haircut from Summer.  Maybe she was having an off day but she completely screwed up my bangs.  She blow dried my bangs straight, then the initial cut was waaaaay short (imagine how short they got after drying naturally) and she cut the hairs far from my hairline so I couldn't even brush long hairs over my bangs to conceal the crap job!  From there she couldn't chop or fix anything else, and she knew it.  I told her that was enough and got out of the chair before she could cut more.

She was really friendly and chatty though, and definitely picked up that I was not happy.  She told me she would fix them anytime I wanted.  That's the only reason Studio DNA got a 2nd star.  No thanks in this bad economy I can take my business elsewhere.

A lot of hair salons can be intimidating to the average Joe, filled as they can be with uber-trendy looking muppets who react with disdain if you don't want an organic kelp protein pack massaged into your scalp by someone named Marcel while the music of Botswanan monks is piped overhead.

We only get our hair cuts so someone will want to shag us. If we didn't want that, we would go back to looking like cavemen.

In fact, most men only want a few things out of their hair chopping experience.

We don't want to over pay
We don't want too much fuss (so we feel girly)
We don't want some fashionably stupid haircut
We do want a good haircut
We like to see pretty ladies while we have our hair cut.

Thankfully, Studio DNA listens to all the rules and more.

It is a good price, not pretentious, run by 2 really great gents in Danny and Aubrey, nice location, good parking, great haircuts and chock full of stunning, friendly, talented goddesses!

The place has zero attitude, it is always warm, welcoming and never judgmental about the sorry state of your follicles.

The delicious and talented Summer always takes care of my noggin fur, and does it superbly, all the while being super cool and friendly.

I love this place, I love the staff, I love that my hair looks as good 2/3 weeks after as it did the day Summer worked her magic.

Good parking too!

So a message to all men....Get your hair cut here - afterwards, people WILL want to shag you!

I used to see Leo here but then he left, so I left.  I decided to come back and Rosie was my stylist.  Love Rosie.  I like that she gets when I explain what kind of look I want.
When I wanted to get hightlights, she wasn't available but I was able to score an appointment with Tina for the same week.  It was NYE week so everyone was super busy.  I have to add that whoever was handling the phone that day was amazing.  She relayed messages back and forth between me and Tina until a time was agreed on. Juliana?? Maybe.

I drove out to the Beverly location and in less than 2 hours, I was done.  Tina said the true color would emerge after a few days and a few washings and to call to let her know how it turned out.
I waited and washed and watched and it never got to the shade I had hoped for.  I called and I came back in to see what could be done.
Well, Tina boosted the color a bit to a bright blonde and it looked fabulous.  I've gotten tons of compliments.
Starting with black hair, it's always risky that I might end up with FOB orange highlights, but I need not have worried.  The coloring is awesome.
Customer service at DNA is the best.  And I love love love that the SM salon is so close to my house.
Highly recommended.

I have been coming to Studio DNA for over a year and a half, and I must say that I adore everything about it. Danny, the co-owner, is absolutely wonderful...warm, inviting, accomadating and adorable. He is everything a business owner should be.  TINA is my stylist, and is incredible with the BIO IONIC straightening system. It literally changed my life. She also does the best haircuts and color.
My daughter recently went to MONICA for the Brazilian blowdry, and we couldn't be happier. Monica is wonderful and so friendly and cool. I love, love, love Studio DNA.  Bonus points for parking, great coffee and candy!!

I'm a guy and from a guys perspective this place is my guilty pleasure. I'm here once every 4 - 6 weeks and the experience is something else.

A bit of history...having come from Chicago I was a regular at mario tricoci which first introduced me to that massage, washing hair, blow dry (i don't need it, but its fun), and drinks.

Okay, back to Now....I found out about this place from here on Yelp and living down the street I just had to stop in. When I first came in, I was directed to the changing area to put on a robe,  then off to wash my hair ...the massage was real good, better than what I had been used to, also the hot towel on my face feels good. It wasn't over my stylist was awesome....she turn my lame hair style (real short cut) to something that was different. I was happy, so happy that now when I go it seems like we're family  or old friends catching up on old times. It'll be nice if my hair could grow faster so I could treat myself more...but that's not happening, so I'll take the once every 4 - 6 weeks.

Love Studio DNA. I've been going there for about six months now for my monthly haircut, and I've never been disappointed. The first time I went, I just walked in and had them hook me up with a stylist. Rosie took care of me, and she's absolutely great. She's a hair-artist, man, and she's got great taste in indie music, which is a total plus.

The neighborhood is great, the building is stylish and comfortable, and if you get your hair cut on Saturday or Sunday they'll hook you up with a mimosa; icing on the cake. Another perk is the hair wash, which is really more like a massage, complete with a warm towel on your face. Oh man, it relaxes me just thinking about it.

The only real con is the price, but it's really not bad for the area. And, being a dude, I shouldn't complain; you ladies have it worse. I spend $55 every time (that includes tip), but that's a price I'm willing to pay for walking out of there feeling like a million bucks.

Sorry to say that although the staff was very nice and the setting was lovely, the haircut I received was awful. It is the most unfeminine, uneven ugly cut I've ever received. I was told to come in for correction if I did not like it, but there's nothing left to cut.
Truly nothing that I'd asked for was listened to; length was left in weird anomalous places, while the three places that I'd said to keep length was cut to 1/4 inch. I have no choice but to wear hats for the next month.
I trusted Aubrey with long hair going to short. I'm brokenhearted.

An update: I was quite surprised to hear from Aubrey today; my review had been brought to his attention. He had offered me a full refund with his apologies. He really is a very sweet man, and it hurt to write a bad review for a person so descent. Perhaps I caught an off haircut from Aubrey. I don't know.
I've gotten my hair corrected at a different salon, and I'm happy with the results. I'll stick with this other salon, but as a person Aubrey is very cool and I wish him well.

I'm on the hunt for a person/place that does curly hair really well, and after going here, I'm still looking.

I had a haircut here last week, by Julianna. She's a great listener and gave me what I wanted in the cut, which is great because my hair is VERY curly and quite difficult. But, as is the case with most stylists, I don't think she really knew how to style it post-cut, so I ended up walking back to work with my hair looking like a total fuzzball and didn't really have a good idea of what she'd done until I washed and styled it myself at home.

Also, the girl who washed my hair kind of gave me swimmer's ear.

I have been here twice in the last six months or so -- I decided to try it out after all of the positive reviews here. It's less expensive than my old fave Capelli Lounge and a lot closer and easier for me to get to. I was skeptical that they could possibly be true, but I'm happy to say I've had great experiences.

The first time I went I saw Tina. I asked for a too-short cut, but she did a really good job and it grew out really well. I'm not a big talker in the stylists chair, and she was fine with that, which I appreciated.

The second time, just last week, Tina was not in the day I had open, so I was assigned Juliana instead. Not only was she a great stylist who was the first to teach me how to tame my cowlick, she was also super-nice and friendly and just fun to be around. Again, I'm not a very fun client since I'm so reserved in the chair, but she really cared about my cut anyway. And it looks fantastic -- she built on what Tina had done and a week later I still feel like a million bucks, whether blowing it straight or letting the natural curls bounce up.

Nice people all around, and a beautiful salon with great design (check out the chandelier by the sinks). Reasonable prices, especially for the quality. Easy parking, a rarity in Santa Monica.

I just moved here from Chicago area and looking for a new salon/stylist. Saw the mostly awesome Yelp reviews for Studio DNA so gave it a shot. Called on Saturday but were fully booked and I couldn't get in. Got an appointment Sunday at 11am though with Sasha.

Like the cut very much. Shorter than I envisioned it but very well styled vs. my stylist in Chicago area and you can just tell that Sasha knows what she is doing. Cool conversation but not too much conversation...just right. The salon is really cool and the underground parking also a definite plus. Stephanie washed my hair and provided the obligatory head massage. She did a great job getting my noggin ready for Sasha to improve through styling and cutting...

Great place, reasonable prices, and like most of the reviews here say..minimum attitude. Thanks Sasha, I'll be back..

Five stars for Rosie and the DELICIOUS mimosas she makes on Saturday mornings!

I have gone to Studio DNA a few times now, and Rosie just knows what to do with my hair, even with my vague descriptions! I usually say something like "ok...I want something different...maybe a little shorter and a little uneven..." and she manages to give me the most amazing haircuts! On top of that, she makes you mimosas if you go on the weekend!

The staff is also very nice and friendly, I've chatted up another stylist, Summer, who seems very cool and down to earth.  They also seem to play pretty good music (which was someone's ipod last time i went) which is always a plus!

The secret parking garage makes it easy-no worries about coins in the meters!

Thank you Rosie!

I've been to this studio twice now and I do believe that I will continue to go to this hair studio. The last time I went, Julianna cut my hair. She did an excellent job consulting with me and executed her vision perfectly. I will definitely keep coming back to her.

My only issue with the second time I went was with the support staff. I wasn't offered water or anything to drink while I waited--this may not seem like a big deal but at a salon that is purporting itself as a cutting edge salon (and I am paying the $$$ for it) I expect these little touches. Maybe I was just irked that the front desk staff were more interested in their own conversations than making me feel welcome...

Nonetheless, Julianna ROCKS!

Letting go is never easy is it? Especially when so much time and effort was invested nurturing what you thought would be beautiful. Was it all done in vain to salvage something that was already dead - dead from the beginning?! Why do women have such attachment issues when letting go shouldn't be that hard and it was only a matter of time?  I guess every situation is different, but this time around I knew it wasn't going to be easy despite all the mental preparations I've made. I am a woman dammit and no matter what, feelings will always be involved even when I kept telling myself that it's not for me!

My super, smokin' stylist, Summer Star gave me a sexy, sassy, sophisticated cut that certainly did not disappoint my siblings. They kept raving about it, but then again they were just happy that the nappiness was gone! Summer Star was extremely friendly with a fun personality that made the experience all the more exciting and less stressful. She guided me through the consultation and, knowing that I wasn't prepared to go short (despite five years of sporting all kinds of short do's), she skillfully sheared the 10 inches off and I ended up with a shoulder length, layered "bedroom, rock star hair!" Her Brazilian blowout gave me the voluminous hair that not only lasted the entire day, but looked even better as it lost some of the umph.

Another cool thing about it was that they took care of the hair donation, so the only thing I did was provide the hair and the Ziplock bag! Oh, the 20% discount for new customers is fabulous, so while an $80 cut is a bit steep, $87 with the discount and tips was well worth it for the skills, service, and swanky ambience.

Let me just cut to the point.  I resisted getting a hair cut for 8 months and when I finally decided to get my hair cut, I picked Studio DNA because of the reviews of the fellow yelpers.

I have to admit that this place looks and feels awesome.  The store looks good and the people are extremely friendly.  My only disappointment (a very important one) came when I got my hair cut.  Let me preface this review by saying my hair cuts normally take 30 minutes tops.

The stylist was rad.  He and I started talking and discussed what style I wanted for 20 minutes.  I showed him couple pictures and he thought it would work well for me.  An hour and 10 minutes later, I realized that he was still working on my sides and the back of my head.  I appreciate the attention to detail but come on, lets get it moving.  This is also when my stylist next appointment arrived and realized he hadn't cut the top yet.

Well he started to cut the top but I think he forgot about the picture.  My sides and back look phenomenal but my hair came out nothing like the picture I brought in.  All he did was trim the top.  Then he told me I was done.  I felt like I was in early 1990's with the sides and back really short and the top really long.  Sure, I could have said something for the guy to fix it but then again, I had been in this seat an hour and 45 minutes.  I really wanted to go.  So I did.

A few days later, I got my hair "fixed" by someone else.  I might go back and give them one more try because I really wanted to like this place but I think I am going to hold for a bit.

I have been getting full highlights for 13 years and have lived in LA for almost ten of them.  Suffice to say, I've been to all the "blonde ppl" in Santa Monica, Brentwood and Beverly Hills.

Summer is amazing.

Her knowledge of color is surpassed only by her ability to communicate it to the client.  I can't remember the last time I was this happy with my highlights.

If you're a "blondesnob" such as myself, stop messing around and book a session with Summer.

'nough said.

Relatively new to the area, I am in the market for a regular spot for a cut.  Optimally I want either a high quality barbershop or a reasonably priced salon.  I'm not looking for the absolute best in town, but I want a quality cut and stay far away from Supercuts and Hair Cutteries of the world..

So, I check out yelp and saw Studio DNA rose to the top in Santa Monica.  I made an appointment and $45 + tip later, I had a new look that I wasn't sure about at first, but later liked and for probably the first time I could remember didn't immediately feel the need to head home and wash it out.  I wasn't blow away, but the stylist knew what she was doing.  I actually kept my hair how it was coming out of the place for the rest of day and it grew back nicely.

So why 4 stars?   Well, although I got a quality cut, my stylist was either in a rush or wasn't that into cutting a guy's hair.  When I mentioned I was looking for something different, she said I didn't have much to work with since my hair was short which wasn't exactly welcoming.  Also, I don't know if I can drop down $45 + tip every 3-4 weeks.  Was it a good cut...of course, but was worth it worth the extra cost...I don't know yet.  If it was $30 or less, this could certainly become my regular place though.  How about a special short cut discount for guys Studio DNA?  I might come back, but am gonna check out a few more places first to compare.

I stopped trying to figure out women a long time ago.  Rembrandt may have been able to paint them with masterful accuracy.  But if ever he solved the complexities of the female psyche, its answers lie waiting in Pandora's box.  Men who have dared attempt to open its secrets have been smite by the mighty winds of unpredictability.

The one thing I have learned?  A girl's hair comes before all else (with shoes a close second).  When it comes to my own cut, a quick skin fade and trim up top closes the deal in fifteen minutes.  Finding a salon to hook up Moms for Mom's Day?  I'd probably have an easier time learning quantum physics.  But thanks to the ladies of Yelp, my decision was made easy.  Fifty-plus 5 star reviews can't be wrong, especially when it comes to women's hair.  Big ups to Julie G. and Zizi B. for some extra recommendations, too.

The receptionist was totally patient, as I must have sounded like Rainman trying to describe my mom and her needs.  Let me preface the visit with a quick history of her hair.  She's had long hair and a similar style pretty much her entire life.  She rarely pays a visit to the high-end salon.  I was half expecting her to shoot my Mother's Day idea down with the quickness... but not only was she up for it, she wanted a significantly shorter cut.  Needless to say, she was nervous before going in... I'm guessing the thought of a new salon and stylist can shake any gal.

The first game ball (see how I'm keeping the review somewhat "dude" here?) goes to the booking agent.  She knocked the ball outta the park with the choice of stylist.  The second game ball goes to the stylist, Rosie.  I dropped a nervous mom off in the morning, caught a movie and returned to a hair cut that made even my normally non-discerning opinion heard.  Her hair looked exactly like the magazine photo my mom brought in (a newer shot of Christina Applegate's "layered" do... see, I'm learning!) and the coloring was fantastic.  Rosie and my mom were chatting up like they'd been pals forever.  It was really cool to see Moms so at ease by the end of the visit.  They also threw in a free, artsy bracelet for Mother's Day!

To cap it all off, I get a call from the salon a few minutes after we left.  They had forgotten about a Mother's Day discount!  Talk about customer service... I think my mom's next visits out to LA will be more about her future appointments with Rosie than seeing me hehehe.

This is not easy for me to do, as I love the vibe of this place and Summer is an awesome person.  I would love to give Studio DNA 4 stars, but my hair was just not 4 stars.  And, for the most part, my hair is not that difficult, as it's really healthy due to zero coloring/highlights and minimal blow dryer/heat use.  For whatever reason, however, after Summer was done, it looked wild and wind-swept, but not in a starlet sexy way.  More like some style-starved chick in the "before" pictures of a makeover.  I was a bit embarrassed and wanted to put my "styled" hair up in a ponytail pronto.  Not exactly sure what went wrong, as what we decided on was pretty basic--a trim of my already long layers, some slightly shorter layers in front.  Cut plus tip and a hair product (that I felt slightly pressured to buy, since they lay out all the products used during your session when you check out) cost about $120.  I tucked my hair behind my ears, put on my shades, and said, "adios" to a great group of people whom I wish my hair had better luck with.  Oh yeah, then I promptly got all confused heading back to the garage as I did when I first left the garage, took an elevator, and found myself in the adjacent condo's lobby.  I know, wha--

Damn, I am so INCREDIBLY disappointed with my haircut.

I've just moved to Santa Monica, which forced me to stray - albeit reluctantly - from my tried and true San Francisco stylist Heather, and try a new stylist.

Studio DNA has incredibly good reviews on Yelp, which made me not think twice about coming here for my first Santa Monica haircut.

But these good reviews were praising not only the salon, but the stylist - a stylist, in every case, other than the one who cut MY hair. Let that be a lesson to you, my friends - pay more attention to these kinds of details than I did.

Rosie. Oh, Rosie. New kid on the block with a kickin' sense of personal style, a pleasant personality, and intriguing dye job. Honey, did I do you wrong in a prior life? Or were you just so distracted that day that you grabbed the weed-wacker instead of your typical precision shears?

Anyway, here's how it went down: Rosie sat me down and asked what I wanted. I told her that I wanted a trim with some layering to give my thinnish, mid-length curly hair some body. I added that I didn't want my "bangs" (e.g. front hair sections, which I usually flip to one side) to be cut without any layering, so please give them some body/ texture.

Rosie nodded distractedly, not saying a word or asking any questions. She didn't ask me what I meant by "layered," didn't ask me whether I swept my forelocks to one side or the other (which the aforementioned Heather asked me every single time), and didn't pause to think whether her concept of what I was asking for might not look so attractive. She then proceeded to give me the haircut from hell.

My bangs were cut so short that when I wake up in the morning, the hair near the front of my face sticks straight up in the air. I've had to resort to using bobby pins to not look like a poodle. If not the worst haircut I've ever had, this does take second place.

It is no exaggeration to say that when I look in the mirror, I feel ugly. I feel angry. I feel hideously unattractive This, after forking over some not insignificant cash.

I will say this:

It's okay to misunderstand somebody. Miscommunications happen.

What is NOT okay is failing to ask your customer a single clarifying question when hearing instructions that you find to be ambiguous, to ensure that you DON'T misunderstand, especially when the butcher job you're about to give won't be so attractive.

Moral of the story, ladies (or gents) with curly hair: You might inquire, politely and gently, whether a stylist other than Rosie would be available to cut your hair at Studio DNA.

Crap!  I shoulda photographed that awesome chandelier!  I admired it the entire time I was in the chair while my color processed.  Aubrey told me they planned it that way, that they intended for people to have that nice view while they are being shampooed, looking up.
That gives you an indication of the thought & thoughtfulness that has gone into the very pleasing interior design of DNA.

Yesterday was my first visit to Aubrey's chair.  What in holy hell took me so long to find my way to DNA?!!   I've been missing out.  Thanks Dawson for the extra little push I needed.  And thanks for photographing the gorgeous bathroom, you saved me the trouble.

Where to begin?!!  I had such a good time!!  DNA was like a party from start to finish.  I was there about 3 hours.  My hair was dried out and needed major help.  Aubrey knew exactly what to do.  He is an artist who knows his stuff:
I learned the reason my color has not "taken" correctly at previous salons, and I learned how underlying short hair "lifts" longer hair when it's properly cut.  I learned this, and more.
I finally finally finally got the short cut I  have wanted for so so long, but could never find anyone to pull it off.  You all will see it tomorrow at BGL, and then I will post photos.  It's a surprise!
And when time repairs the damage to my hair, then Aubrey and I are gonna do some serious creative color!

OK, so I've known Danny for awhile.  I didn't know he operated the salon with Aubrey.  I didn't know that proceeds from the beautiful handmade products they sell in the shop help to empower South African women.  (Aubrey is from South Africa.)  I didn't know the salon was relatively new, has been open slightly more than a year.  I didn't know I would be charmed by Cagney & Lacey, the new additions to DNA, who happen to be Chihuahua puppies.  Lordy you should see these little angels.  They like to chew on your hair, so they will be good for drumming up business, haha!

Studio DNA is everything it claims to be, i.e., an upscale salon minus the attitude.  I gots no patience with 'tude, so this works for me.  I had a joyous time chatting with Aubrey (I think we bonded), and his assistant Amy (we bonded too).  Danny.....(bonding mission successful!)  Haha I may have bonded with at least one of the dogs as well!

Prices?   It's a bargain.
Parking in crazy permit-controlled SaMo?  It's easy in DNA's underground garage!   Wooohooo!
Friendly people?  Studio DNA is bursting with them.  Efficient, smart, knowledgeable, creative, professional, cool-looking staff with amazing hair styles!  The place has wonderful energy, is what it is, in a nutshell.

Hurry hurry hurry to Studio DNA.  Trust me.

After yelping Funnel Mill (winner of BEST OF for authentic coffee in Los Angeles Magazine) I saw a link to DNA.

My coworkers and friends are sick of hearing me say "I'm going to cut my hair short. I'm gonna do it!" And then, not do it.  In fact, a couple of months ago, a coworker found a picture of me, uploaded it to http://style.com or something, and printed out variations of short-hair-me!

Well, after reading reviews for DNA, I placed the much anticipated phone call, made an appointment for that evening, and showed up.  THANK GOD it was mimosa day (turns out they have complimentary mimosa's on the weekends) and THANK GOD I had rosie.  She comforted my woes, liquored me up, and gave me a fabulous bob.

It's love. The only downside to Studio DNA is the fact that I'm going to be in England for the next year and the Santa Monica location is a little bit far for my taste.

Otherwise, Rosie and I bonded for about 3 hours last night during the In Da Klub event wherein I received yummy cocktails and listened to a dj spin some tracks while getting my roots re-touched and hair cut. The result was a really fun evening and a stylish hairstyle that's already gotten good reviews. Thank you Rosie and Studio DNA -- I'll be running around the streets of London in style because of you.
