A few years back, I used to go to a salon where Ann used to work. Then, one day she was gone, and no one in the salon can tell me where she went.  Since then, I kept trying to find a hair stylist that has the caliber of Ann. I know she couldn't make everyone like the way she cuts hair, but she is the best for me.  She knows what style, she listens, she remembers and she does have a great personality.

When I was searching on Yelp, this week and started reading reviews on Studio 5 - I noticed everyone was mentioning Ann's name.  So I kept reading, and one person mentioned about her working before from a different salon.  I basically called Studio 5 and made an appointment with Ann right away.

I was so happy that it was the same Ann!  As always, she did cut my hair well.  Now, one of her best customers is back!  I told her, she can't hide from her past customers, we will eventually find her...

She gets a 5 STAR!

Thank you Ann!

Based on other recommendations here, I went to see Ann. My previous haircut was pretty bad and I let it grow out a lot.

She seemed to be listening, but, in the end, she didn't seem to really understand my needs. She got close to what I wanted, but too short on the sides. She used the razor comb, too, which my hair feeling too thinned out. (Maybe she did that because I said I used to get razor cuts at another place in Sunnyvale, but that's a razor, not a razor comb.)

[added later]
After living with this haircut for a couple of weeks, I probably wouldn't go back here unless I was *really* desperate.

I went back four days after my haircut to get it fixed because the front was still too long, and she either didn't want to remember me or she really didn't remember. She tried to pawn me off to another person even though I asked for her on the phone. After she trimmed my hair, she charged me $16 (full price), so I paid, said "Thanks", and left no tip.

Still wasn't good, but it was shorter.

As I said, I won't return unless I am really in need of a haircut.

I didn't catch the name of the stylist who did my hair - it was a young woman (perhaps 30).  Next time I'll have to pay closer attention. (I'm sure I'll just walk in again.)

My wife convinced me to stop buzzing my head (to 1/8th inch), so now I have to start getting it cut by professionals again.  I'm in the process of growing it out, so my requirements are very simple: take the minimum off the top, clean up around the ears, and best effort on looks.

I am a couple of months into growing back my hair and decided to look for a place I might return to.  I headed down fair oaks, turned right on El Camino and stopped at the first place I saw.  The haircut was well done (she managed to take only about 1/8th - 3/16ths of an inch off the top), I didn't have to wait at all as a walk-in, and the pricing was a bit better than Super Cuts (but so far the requirements are pretty straightforward).  Good enough that I'll return as my hair grows out (and revise my rating if required).

With hair cuts from new people, you never know what you're going to get until the hair is finally cut. I desperately needed a haircut and they were the only place open on Monday. Thankfully, the reviews proved correct. Ann gave me a good haircut. Once she was done, she was talking about how to improve upon it next time. So I was pleased with the overall experience...and you can't beat the price either.

Ann used to cut my hair at a different salon when I first moved to Sunnyvale. When she left, I tried different places, some cheaper and most much more expensive.  I was very happy to find her again at Studio 5.

I think this is the best value around.  $16 plus tip and you get a real haircut.  If you don't care about quality, you can find cheaper. But for me this hits the "sweet spot."

I like this place. I have a ton of really thick wavy, curly, straight, and frizzy hair. Every time I have gotten my haircut by Ann, I have been satisfied. She will thin it out and cut it in a way that I can just wash and go. No tedious blow-drying for this girl. I have probably been here half a dozen times and I get compliments on my hair every time after she is done. I tell her to decide what to do, just giving her a suggestion and she takes it from there.

Only complaints: I had another stylist do my hair (I forgot to ask for Ann) and was not thrilled with the results, not bad, but not much better than Super Cuts. Number two: Although it is worth it for the results, Ann can be rough on your head (I have a high threshold for pain, and it hurt). I know now to pop a couple of Advil before I head over.

I am giving the ibuprofen a couple of minutes now before I call and make an appointment for Ann. She is always available to take me in on short notice.

This is my new haircut spot.  Friendly workers and a pretty good sized shop.  The lot is nice and spacious as well.

I had Linh cut my hair this time.  She does a good job and is really gentle.  I hate when I leave other places with clipper scrapes all over my neck from a violent fade session.

$16 + tip AND they accept credit cards.  Cash-only is so played out.  ;)

I've had Ann cut my hair a few times, thinking and hoping she'll do better than last time, but I had to fix my hair every time when I get home. It was anything from fade not being straight, like causing to have weird flat spots and corner spots, or some of my hair sticking out because she doesn't fade my sides carefully, even after asking her nicely about it.

The price is decent at $19 for hair cut and shampoo, but the quality isn't really there. She pretends like she listens to you and acts like she knows what she's doing, but I just tired of having to fix my own hair after paying for the cut.

Now, I've tried Mitri Hair Studio and even I had to pay extra $10, I was actually satisfied with the cut and did not find a flaw on it when I got home.

Hi, I'm adding my 2 cents to the review of Studio 5.

Dating back to 2003, I used to sporadically go get my hair cut over at Salon Salon (off of Winchester, review forthcoming).   That's the place where people go to get there haircut when they desperately need help prior to big events like weddings...the stylists over there are very good artisans and can take care of major problems like brillo pad hair or split ends, etc etc.

Unfortunately, they're also very, very expensive.      I'd hold out and try to get a haircut only once every other month and fob it out b/c the cost was that unreasonable.

And then suddenly, one day, late last year, as I was expressing my grievances, a dear friend stepped in and recommended a woman named Kim who might be able to cut my hair without breaking the bank.

Having Kim in my life as a barber has been a wonderful thing for me.   As a barber she has a meticulous attention to detail, and yet is to perform the haircuts in a consistent and succinct manner.     She caters to my schedule often...there have been times when I was working rather late, trying not to be distracted, and she'd stick around for a 6 p.m. appointment.

Not only does she keep me looking good, but she's also a wonderful person to be around.   Recently, I was looking to move to a new residence, and right on the spot after the haircut, she took the time to call up one of her clients and try to check and see if there was a room open for me at that client's home.    Although there wasn't a room after all, it meant alot to me that  she went out of her way as a friend to try and help me out.

Studio 5 is new location that Kim is working her styling skills.     So if you're looking for a barber who is economical, fast, friendly, and does quality work, this is a place very well worth checking out.

Studio 5 caters to women seeking high end do-overs, weddings, and other special occasions.  Having said this, why would a man of all people be writing a review for a salon?

As it so happens, Studio 5 is the new home of my favored barber of the last 5 years - Kim.  I'm an Asian male who cuts his hair once every 3-4 months.  My hair tends to be rather unwieldy due to its natural curls.  To exacerbate matters, I also I like to keep my hair longish thus complicating the task of finding a solid barber.

The mark of a good barber is someone who a) remembers how you want your hair, b) is able to consistently reproduce the exact way you want it cut after cut.  Kim has been able to do this consistently over the years.  I haven't had a bad haircut in 5 years thanks to her!

So, if you're an Asian guy (different races have different hair types) looking for a solid barber in Sunnyvale, look no further than Salon 5.  For less than $20 you will receive a solid hair cut from a woman who has decades of experience cutting Asian hair.  Since I cut my hair so infrequently, I consider the cost of the cut immaterial - it just happens to be a nice bonus! (I always give her a nice big tip)

Ann, my stylist and the owner of Studio 5, does a fine job cutting my (unfortunately thinning) hair.  Although there is definitely a cultural gap separating us, Ann has an innate talent for making my hair look good without much input from me.  She happily complies with special requests (I prefer to have my hair shampooed and rinsed both before and after the cut) and never hedges or complains.

The price is right, too - $16 for a haircut.

I went here for my first trim since moving to Ca. I was very nervous, ( i has been very attached to my old stylist!)
I have to say, I was incredibly pleased with this place! My hair came out much better than I had hoped, or expected.
I showed the stylist a picture, and she mixed up the identical color.
I only got a trim, but one of the best I've ever had! I was shocked by how much better my hair looked!
Ann, the stylist, was very honest, and didn't try to get me to buy any products, or do anything else to my hair. I greatly appreciated this!
I also had a manicure there, and was very pleased with that as well.
I will definitely be returning!

After my wife and I were both let down pretty decidedly by Mitri, I decided it was time to look for another salon. I waited long past my hair was down in my eyes, and finally decided that I had to get some grooming done.

I phoned Studio 5 to check if they were open on Sundays, and immediately got an appointment for that afternoon. I arrived a couple minutes before my appointment to find another gentleman in the lobby. He was a regular walk-in, and Ann kindly suggested he wait since I had made an appointment earlier. My haircut before was a bit longer, and I wanted to return to an earlier shorter cut I'd had about a year ago. I showed Ann some pictures, she nodded, put them on the counter, and went to work.

I was a little nervous at first of the speed she was cutting my hair, as I've had some pretty bad experiences with salons that I paid far too much for butchering my hair. Ann, however, was great. She told me to check after only about 10 minutes of cutting, and I looked to see she'd left it a little longer than the picture I'd showed. I *always* appreciate this kind of caution on the part of a stylist. We agreed on about a half an inch less and she set to work again, cutting deftly for about another 5 minutes and then finishing with a styling somewhat close to the photo. She did not spend an immense amount of time trying to make it match (my hair is wavy/curly and has a personality of it's own--I sometimes have to tell stylists to stop trying and just show them how I do it).

She rang me up at $16 (as I'd read about on Yelp), handed me her card, and said I should call again for my next haircut.

I'm planning on it.

--

I've been back a couple of times and I'm going to keep the four star rating with this caveat--ASK FOR ANN. If you look at the overall landscape of reviews, you will see that those who are most pleased with this place are the ones who got their cuts from Ann. My wife went in for a cut, Ann wasn't available, we used someone else... not a great experience.

So I keep the rating at four for Ann and Ann alone. Use the rest at your own risk.

Just got back.  Ann does a great job cutting hair.  The sun was coming through the door and it was a little hard to see and the left side of my hair ended up a bit uneven.  I came back and she fixed it right up.  Looks perfect, now.

Definitely one of the better places to get men's haircuts around here.

I have been getting my hair cut by Kim for over a year and a half now.
Normally I last about two haircuts with any hairstylist or barber before they  ruin my hair and I have to move on. Kim is amazing. I don't get anything really complicated, a little shorter on the sides blended to the top, but she makes sure every hair is the same length, she has never given me a cut I haven't loved, and she is really reasonably priced. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a consistent barber or hairstylist. The only thing is you have to contact her directly as Studio 5 won't let you book her, because she is only renting space. So to get a hold of her directly call 408-368-8380. And tell her you got the number from Nicks Yelp Review. Welcome to the best kept secret in Sunnyvale.

I HATE finding a new stylist, and have never walked out of a salon on a first visit as happy with my hair as I am today.  I walked in, without an appointment, and only waited a few minutes for the guy ahead of me to get his eyebrows waxed.  I understand what the other reviewer is saying about the stylist being rough, and seeming rushed, but I think it's just how she does things.  She washed my hair in a rough Lady Macbeth type manner.  If there was a spot of dirt anywhere, I guarantee, she got it.  She did cut my hair in a fast paced, Benihana style cutting frenzy, and she seemed a bit dangerous with a straight iron.  BUT, I walked out happy with my hair, that's what's important.  The price is so worth it.  When a lot of places charge $60+ for a jr stylist, this place at $30 is a steal.  And it's worth mentioning that even though it is an Asian salon, she really did well with my baby-fine caucasian hair.  I will definitely go back.

as soon as I walked into this place, I instantly had a strange feeling.  this being sunnyvale, I've gotten used to being the minority in the store...blond white guy lost in a sea of asians, indians, etc.  however, this was a different kind of minority experience...the lone male experience.  this shop was full of women getting haircuts (and presumably there were other cosmetological operations/horrors going on towards the back of the store...what is it you women do at salons anyways? :).  and yet, despite the fact that it was full, it was really quiet in there.  too quiet.  like tumbleweed-drifting-through-spaghetti western quiet.  I started feeling the stares...guess they don't get lots of blond white guy customers.

anyways, I was greeted by Lynn, who I'm guessing is "the new girl" there.  she marched me back to one of the chairs, smiled and gestured for me to sit.  in broken english she said, "How U Kevin?".  whatever, I don't hold that against her.  at least she's being friendly.  actually, lynn turned out to be all right.  she seemed very determined to do a good job, she asked repeatedly if it was short enough, etc.  I had to ask her once or twice to revisit a few areas that were slightly uneven.  but she never seemed to get frustrated and she did an admirable job with blending my thin-as-hell hair.

as far as the establishment itself goes, it's all right.  regrettably it's located in one of those no-name-soul-sucking-mini-shopping-centers that have proliferated all up and down the franchise alley known as El Camino Real.  whatever, I can't ding them for that.  but I do think on the inside of their shop they should do a little renovating.  the wood trimmed wall sections are nice, but I think they contribute to the overall dark feeling in the store.  I think they need to do something with the lighting in there to brighten things up.  like a huge skylight or something.

anyways, this place is all right.  they do a decent job and the price is hard to beat ($16).

I've been here twice in the past 1.5 years and have managed to get a good hair cut each time.  The Korean lady who owns the shop is experienced and is able to provide personalized suggestions and tips on hair styling. The place is not pricey.  I paid $22 for a hair cut that took 20+ minutes of her time.

I went to Studio 5 this afternoon to get a haircut largely due to the favorable reviews I read earlier here on Yelp. I asked for Ann and she was great--very attentive and always asked for my ok before doing anything major. I'm going to ditch my usual stylist and go to her now. She definitely gives an outstanding cut and has a no-nonsense flair.

I decided to try this place after reading all the good reviews on yelp. Unfortunately, my experience was horrible. When I went in I had to ask for a shampoo, which most places ask you what you would like before they start digging in. The shampoo was good, as was the time she spent cutting. However, as soon as she started combing and blow drying my hair, it began to feel like she was pulling my hair out. She was so ruff, I left with my scalp and face hurting. My head kept getting pulled really hard in different directions. It was almost like she was in a rush to get me out, even though I was the only person in there getting a cut. To top in off, while she was drying my hair, she smacked me 3 times in the face with the brush and didn't even apologize. Then she sprayed hairspray in my face and again, said nothing. This was a horrible hair cutting experience. And, it was way overpriced! $40 + tip for that experience, I think not. I will not be going back.

This was the first salon i went to when i first move to the bay a few years back. I got my haircut and color done by this korean lady who is no longer working there. I like the cut and color but didnt wow me so much but for some reason i keep on coming back when i need to get my hair colored. Last time i got my hair done, Ann was my stylist and colorist. I liked the color she created and was happy but not feeling the haircut tho. She totally gave me thick bangs that i didnt ask for but i thought what the heck i needed a new look so i just went for it thinking maybe it would look nice. I ended up looking like a dork. So i went home and style it according to my preference and it didnt look dat bad. After a few weeks when it grew out it started to look nice and everything seems to fall into place. I wouldn't recommend this place for haircuts but Ann does a nice job for coloring at a reasonable price and besides the salon open late which is convenient.
