I'm a sweets girl, so I don't really care for fried foods, but this place has some good comfort food!

The restaurant looks like a little cabin in the woods and is super cute. Everyone is really friendly and they're so attentive!

My favorite is actually all the sides: the green beans, chicken noodle soup, mash potatoes and of course, the cinnamon bread/bun goodness!

The only reason I'm rating it a 4 is because the wait is so lonnnnggg, so get there early!

This is another famous stop in KC.

I felt that I was definitely taken back in time when I was eating there!

As far as the food goes, its not bad, but its not cheap.   Its about $20/entre when drinks are included.   The chicken is pan fried... so it is a bit more "special".

Stroud's is more of a place for visitors... less for the true food fanatics.

Wow..you mean everything is fried here???

I perused the menu to only find a few fish entrees that were not fried and since KC is no where near the ocean I opted for the chicken fingers.  The salad and baked potato were quite yummy as were the large and plentiful chicken fingers.  I'm not a "country cooking" fan (even though I was raised in the south) but I did enjoy the sides.

The restaurant has apparently been here forever and it's seems to be a KC tradition so I indulged my bf.

If you like home cooking check it out.

I don't eat meat and this is why I am only giving Stroud's two stars. On the menu there was only potatoes, apple sauce, salad, cottage cheese, and cinnamon rolls that were vegetarian.  The waitress was kind enough to give me slightly larger portions but still not a very satisfying meal. The quality was not that great either. The salad was just a generic bagged salad and the potato was dry. The apple sauce was pretty good, and the cinnamon rolls were okay.
I went with a big party of meat eaters but I have been to other meat based restaurants in the area that offered a vegetarian dish but this place none. The only positive point that out of a party of 12 my dish was the "cheapest"... $8.00.

If you want to go to wait for 45 minutes to enter a gimmicky, over priced, trashy looking restaurant that serves over cooked canned veggies and greasy fried chicken then this is the place for you. It is not worth the time.

After the original restaurant closed and before the one in Fairway, KS opened, we satisfied our Stroud's jones w/ a trip out here.  In California parlance it's way the hell and gone, but we (or rather my brother-in-law Bob, who knows the area intimately) found it.

The difference in people's perceptions always interests me.  Where one of the reviewers saw trashy decor, I saw interestingly authentic and retro.  What I remember, aside from the attractively country exterior, which contrasted w/ the slightly funky interior, was getting a damn fine Bombay Saphire martini for $6, considerably less than I would have paid in California.

We were w/ extended family, which made for a fair size, not large group.  We ordered too much food, as usual.  The chicken wasn't quite as good as the original.  There seemed to be less seasoning than before.  The cinnamon rolls were good, the vegetables were overcooked, but then they always are for my taste.  I just expect that.  I missed the piano player who defined the original Stroud's for me.  The original would have rated 5 stars.  This is 3 1/2, rounded up to 4.  In a few years we'll return to the one in Fairway and see if it's weathered a bit.  Reports are that the chicken has improved since we were there last year, but we're not going back this trip.

It's true that the fried chicken and sides are quite good and just like Mom used to make back in the sixties.  It's true that almost everyone leaves with a styrofoam box.  It's also true that the majority of people eating here are not slender.  There's invariably a wait at prime time.  Lots of people come for their birthday, and the wait-staff will gladly sing Happy Birthday to them.  After many years I found even better fried chicken, -at the Peachtree Restaurant at 18th and Vine, but they closed (the one in the Sprint District isn't as good).  So you gotta like Stroud's.
I originally posted this review two years ago, but it ended up in the Closed- Stroud's category, so I'm reposting it.

I'd probably give the food three stars, but the place was just so cool I am going for 4 stars. Eating here made me think of http://thisiswhyyouref.../. It was just a ton of unhealthy food.

I used to fly out to kansas city a couple of times a year on business and every single time I'd make sure to stop by Stroud's for some of the best fried chicken in the country! It is so good that I would fly to Kansas City from NYC just to eat here. (I haven't yet done that - I'll let you all know when I do.)

This restaurant is a renovated cabin home built back in the 1800s. You can read up on the restaurant's history on their website. The place is really neat and it feels like you are going back to the old Oak Ridge Manor.

And the food is absolutely amazing. I always get the fried chicken and, trust me, you'll never, ever leave hungry because the portions are huge. Not sure if they still do this, but they used to have unlimited sides to share with your party. Get the: cinnamon rolls, green beans, and mashed potatoes. Prepare to have your taste buds thank you endlessly.

The decor in this place is.....rather trashy.  This place is way too expensive to be " home-cookin' "

If Jesus decided to fry chicken, it would probably taste like Stroud's.

It wouldn't be too flashy (afterall, who is Jesus out to impress?) but it would be just about perfect.

I started going to Stroud's when I was little, as did most Kansas City Northerners, and I've never looked back.

It's all family style-- bowls of chicken and all the fixings. While this could be uncomfortable-- for those who do not like their families, I suppose-- the chicken overcomes. Along with the bird, you get potatoes and thick, creamy gravy and green beans with hunks of meat in them and complimentary cinnamon rolls at the conclusion of the meal.

Oh yeah, and if all of this isn't enough to pound your bowels into submission, the salad at the beginning of the meal is heaped with shredded cheese. Godbless you Stroud's.

The restaurant itself is a large, wooden cabin from the olden days and it sits on a small pond, yards away from an old-timey church and a functional, but equally as old storage shed.

This place will probably be around long after its fried chicken kills me. It's hard to tell if that's impressive or depressing.

GREAT restaurant! Down home cooking with a minimalist menu keeps this restaurant packed most of the time. Best fried chicken I've had which is their claim to fame "We choke our own chickens". My favorite is the chicken noodle soup. Homemade thick egg noodles with plenty of chunks of white meat chicken.  Side dishes include green beans (get a triple helping), mashed potatoes w/peppery gravy and cinnamon rolls.

The original restaurant, which was a roadhouse, had to be closed down due to eminent domain by the city to widen the street  which is now ever so lovely with a concrete wall to mark the original entry.
Too bad, that location with the old dilapidated building made dining enjoyable and nostalgic.

Their north location is much larger and is an old house that is warped which is what gives it such nostalgic charm!   Not as cool as the old location, but still a must to visit.

I always go and order my food for take-out, then enjoy a Bud Light in the bar while waiting.   Non-smoking now.

Stroud's is some kind of weird tradition with my family that I just DON'T get.  Every time I'm in KC for a visit, they insist on subjecting me to Stroud's food.  "We choke our own chickens" is their mantra and therefore the food must be good.  Um... whatever.  The food is just okay.  I've had better fried chicken.   Don't shoot me, but I prefer KFC's chicken (not that I eat it anymore since I've heard about thier insanely inhumane treatment of their chickens, but that's not the point.)  Some yeah, I guess there's something to be said for choking your own chickens, but it's still not that great.  My cousins really dig the cocktails, so maybe that's part of the appeal.  The nice thing about this place is you get your food served family style.  They're happy to accomodate large groups.  We always get seated in one of the small side rooms so we can sit as a family, which is nice.  I did really like their fabulously unhealthy greenbeans.  I would have been content to eat a whole plate of them and nothing else. Also, the campus of  Strouds is really nice.  There's a lake and a chapel which are particularly picturesque at sunset.  But I wouldn't be heartbroken if I never went to Stroud's ever again.   I just doesn't speak to my gullet.
