Haven't been to this location...but have been to the one (original one?) in the Northland many times.   It's in a beautiful, picturesque setting while waiting the LONG lines for dinner:)

Actually, I was married in the little church on the grounds adjacent to the restaurant.  A long time ago...

I recently ate here for a birthday celebration.  I had not had Strouds since it was originally located in that rickety shack in the middle of nowhere.  I say rickety with affection, as I can't think of a better atmosphere to gorge on fried chicken and cinnamon rolls.  The new location is not particularly inspiring and feels a little too available.

The food is exactly what I remember.  Chicken is huge and potatoes are filling.  The green beans are still to die for.  Cinnamon rolls are still heavy and greasy....and so not needed!  I don't eat gravy, but others at the table did mention that it lacked the peppery goodness of the old location.

I am probably the only one on Yelp that actually remembers, or ate at Mrs. Peter's Chicken in KCK.  If you have, you will always compare every chicken place to Mrs. P's- and that is a tough act to follow.  However, Strouds does a pretty decent job of holding its own.

Stroud's was kicked out of their old location when Mr. Eminent Domain decided it needed a million dollar bridge to connect one crappy part of town to another crappy part of town. In doing so, a Kansas City landmark was forced to relocate. Stroud's, formerly in South Kansas City is now located on Shawnee Mission Parkway in Fairway and I decided to check it out for Father's day.
When we arrived at Stroud's at 5PM there was a 30 minute wait. We happily walked to the bar, ordered a round of Miller Light, and proceeded outside to sit on the patio and get a little sun while we waited. After being seated, the waitress quickly arrived and took our drink order as we started perusing the menu. I ordered the 3 piece chicken meal, my wife ordered the same and shared hers with our girl. My mom ordered a half order of livers (I know). Our meals came with all of the mashed potatoes, gravy, and green beans you can eat , and maybe a dinner role but I can't be sure because I was too busy with the pan-fried chicken and gravy. This place has the best gravy I have ever had, I mean, I am not a gravy aficionado by any means but this stuff is addictive. Everyone enjoyed what they ordered and everyone was completely stuffed with plenty of leftovers. I even tried the livers (dipped in gravy) and they were... well lets put is this way, they could have been pieces of monkey turd and tasted like a million bucks as long as they were covered in Stroud's gravy! Highly recommend. Expect to pay $15 per person not including drinks. Dress anyway you feel comfortable, preferrably something loose so you can breath after eating.

This place is apparently a favorite in the area, but it was definitely not up to par in my book.  They do family-style, Southern cooking, but the food was very expensive and not very tasty.  I went with the fried chicken, and I think they use the same batter for that as the chicken fried steak.  Big no-no.  They also gave cinnamon rolls instead of biscuits, which I found strange.  Babe's in the DFW area is 100 times better than Stroud's.  When it comes to soul food, nobody does it like the South.

Stroud's is definitely a place to visit while in the KC area and as with most places of this ilk there are pluses, minuses and things that only locals can appreciate.

Atmosphere - Am I home at ... Mom, Dad?  Hey, how did my parent's dining room get in here?  The main entrance is an original log cabin with additions that turn it into my parents home. It was very cool.

Food - Big family style portions that are fried, fried and fried.  It is a tasty heart attack on a plate ... beep, beep, and beep.  I had the mashed potatoes (skipped gravy), chicken (split plate) breast (large and moist), huge chicken wing, green beans, Diet Coke, salad (Oooo, health nut) and a cinnamon roll all for around $11.00.  They have some desserts but I doubt you can eat any after the volume of food they provide.

Service - Very friendly, like your mom was waiting on you.

Price - Reasonable to a great deal (see above).

Overall - A great experience but you could not make too many visits or you will need a triple bypass.

*Pluses - Great value, big portions, moist chicken
*Minuses - Chicken coating could use some spice, salad was kind of basic.
*Locals - It was packed. They must have a great health plan!

There is no denying that the food here does not taste the same as it did at the old location. Different equipment? Different staff? Who knows, but everyone in my party noticed how things taste a little differently, most noticeably the gravy which now lacks a certain oomph. Stouds must have heard complaints because they have compensated with the lack of flavor with more black pepper which really does nothing.  The breading on the chicken fried steak suffers the same fate.

The good news is that just about everything else tastes the same: american fries, cottage fries, salads, cinnamon rolls.

I'm sad to say that the N.KC location now carries the torch of the best Stroud's in town.

If you're looking for a healthy meal or a quick meal out, don't go to Stroud's. There's not a healthy item on the menu, and between the service and the required prep time for the pan-fried chicken, you'll be at your table for at least an hour.

But, if you're looking to indulge in some great fried foods at a nice, relaxed pace, then Stroud's is the spot for you.

I'll start with the chicken. It's pan-fried to order and is, quite simply, the best in town. Completely worth the 20+ minutes it takes to prepare. The green beans are also fantastic, and I mean that in a very sentimental way. If you've ever had a grandmother who cooked her beans in bacon fat, then these will really take you back.

Glad to see the Kansas side Strouds was able to re-open.  I've never been to the original on the Missouri side.

In the 8 months I was in KC, the wife and I must have gone to Strouds least 10 or 15 times.

My favorite things to eat here are pan fried chicken and pork chops!

I need to find an excuse to pass through KC again soon!

To celebrate  the 10th Anniversary of the day when we moved into our house, my family got an early start on Sunday and decided to go to Stroud's. To ensure that we would get a table, we arrived at the restaurant around 4:00 on a Sunday. Call me paranoid. Surprisingly, the dining room was relatively bare for a Sunday afternoon. Even the blue-haired crowd hadn't showed up yet.
I started with the chicken noodle soup. It was quite possibly the best chicken noodle soup I have ever had. Nicely flavored broth, big chunks of chicken, vegetables (not soggy!). Yum. My Dad and I split the dark meat platter (2 thighs, 2 legs). The chicken was perfectly cooked, and juicy. But the coating could use some flavor. Maybe I'm just use to Popeye's spicy variety, but that chicken could have used some pizazz. Our chicken came with enough sides to feed a basketball team. A platter of mashed potatoes, green beans, cottage fries, and gravy for days. Everything was cooked perfectly, and delicious, but it didn't really stand out. Stroud's is still the place to go for a nice family dinner. Especially one where you reminisce about ten years worth of memories.

Stroud's served me the best pork chop I've ever eaten.  Seriously. The service is great too-- better than any casual, homestyle restaurant you'll find. And those sweet rolls? Wow.

But there's just something a little off about this location in relation to the food they serve. Stroud's serves stuff-your-face, guilt in the form of fried chicken, steak, mashed, fries, sweet rolls, and gravy.  The food covers an entire table. Ridiculous.

But do I want my guilt served along a bland stretch of Shawnee Mission Parkway in Fairway, KS? No way. The new location just lacks any character or authenticity and ends up feeling like an upscale, touristy version of Old Country Buffet. OK...maybe that was a low blow. Stroud's does serve decent to awesome homestyle food, but doing it in a cleaned-up, generic, Kansas-side sanitized package does nothing for me. Stroud's should feel like a dive. And out of this dive should come the wonderful, flavorul food that transcends the place as a dive. Instead Stroud's is a monument to its own success. Blocks from the former Sprint HQ and the most tony neighborhoods in the KS 'burbs sits the flagship Stroud's. It's just wrong on many levels.  I bet the place will eventually lose its culinary mojo from the homogenized influence of its new and  faceless suburban location. The location has no meaning to the establishment.

Does Stroud's turn out great, homestyle food? Absolutely. Is it life-affirming experience like many of the BBQ spots in the city? Absolutely not, but it's still good.

A friend of mine told me that Stroud's has the best fried chicken in KC and I have to agree. Definitely not your chicken-in-a-bucket. The chicken was moist and the skin was pan fried to just the right crisp. But I wasn't that impressed with the sides that come with the chicken. The mashed potatoes were supposedly homemade, but they seemed like they came out of the box. The gravy was good though. The green beans were out of a can but had some ham hocks in them. I just can't get over the canned green beans. Yuck.  The cinnamon rolls were totally awesome. We only had a bite before we left (too full from the chicken) but they were awesome the day after so thumbs up.

Service was fine and the atmosphere was kitschy cool. This is more like a 3.5 star place, but I am rounding down. Room for improvement for sure.

Amazing place to get fried chicken. In fact, if you're going to get fried chicken, it would absolutely be a sin to get it from somewhere else.

You definitely need to go with more than one person because there is so much freakin' food! I love to eat, but geez, this is down-home portions at its finest.

There is so much fun history about Stroud's as well, from it's Oak Ridge (?) manor to it's newest location. I'm glad that are expanding, so they can share their great mashed potatoes and meals with everyone! :)

The only qualm is yeah, they give you large portions, but they are kind of pricey for a fried chicken joint. If you share, it's fine, but it was just a little off putting for some of the dishes. (A hamburger, for instance, is almost $9)

Word to the wise: do not come here alone (see pic).

Alright, I came here after Crew- one because I was hungry and two because I had been told by several people I absolutely could NOT miss this place.

It would have been better to share my meal (i got the traditional- fried chicken, mashed potatoes, beans, gravy, and cinnamon rolls) especially would have helped with the price- this is not KFC people, my meal was about $14.00- but it was a TON of food, and that food was GOOD.

Sure, I only like 1/5 of the whole meal- but mh mh it was good- and the cinnamon roll? LOVES IT!

If you're in KC, do not miss this.

This newest location has been open just a couple months, and it is has been packed nonstop since opening.  We went for lunch and it was good, but not exactly outstanding.  We had the fried chicken, mashed potatoes, fries, and green beans.  I enjoyed the sides as much as the chicken.  The service was excellent, and the waitress packed up a beautiful bag of 6 (!) cinnamon rolls for us to take home -these made it worth the trip.
Priceier than I expected for lunch...$40ish.

The new Stroud's located off Shawnee Mission Parkway, is a great place to gather with friends and family for a night of family-style dining and delicious food.  The restaurant used to be a Mexican place and has been converted into a homestyle pan-fried chicken place.

Stroud's, a staple of Kansas City, serves delicious fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gooey cinnamon rolls.  Arguably the best fired chicken in Kansas City, Stroud's is not somewhere you go to count calories, but rather to enjoy yourself and if anything, count the buttons that pop off your pants.

Okay - I failed to try the fried chicken, so maybe I'm wrong. But the chicken-fried chicken and the chicken-fried steak were absolutely sans flavor (except for the very peppery, flabby gravy). The green beans were horrifying to behold so I did not attempt them, and the mashed potatoes were less than interesting. The "salad" is a small plate of iceberg lettuce and cheese, with croutons. They have a pretty nice bar. Staff were friendly but slow to refill drinks and bring the check. The cinnamon rolls, while easily the best part of the meal, since they had actual flavor (cinnamon soaked in butter), were not as good as many homemade versions I've had. We waited 45 minutes to be seated on a Friday night and it was certainly not worth the wait or the price. If I cannot avoid going back, perhaps the (not chicken-)fried chicken will change my mind, but frankly I was not a fan. I felt rather unwell later in the evening and still do the following afternoon.

Okay, I know - 5 stars might be high, but the stars are not to be compared to places like Plaza III or Capital Grille. I gave it 5 stars for the category, which, to me, is down home comfort food. This place is iconic. The food is just as good as the old place on 85th st, but the bar is better. It is considered a fried chicken place, but for me, the fried chicken is secondary. My favorites are the sides - the mashed potatoes and chicken cream gravy, the green beans with ham hocks and onions and the cinnamon rolls. The only down side is that it makes you feel like a pig when you walk/stagger out. There is a ton of food. If you want to save a little, just get half as many family dinners as you need, then order just the "extra plates" for everyone else.  Also, if you don't have the time to wait in line, order it 30-40 minutes ahead and carry out. It tastes just as good at home.

We've been to three Stroud's locations.  First the original one, then the Northern one after the original one was closed to make way for a new road and then this one, which opened about three weeks ago and has been crowded ever since.  My favorite was the original.  I think the chicken was seasoned better and I loved the piano player  there.  The Northern location had a nice, lived in look, as did the original, but it was way the hell and gone, a long distance and a little complicated to find, although we and everyone else managed.  Last year at the Northern location I first noticed the chicken tasted a little bland and the trend continues.  Which brings us to the new location, which is spiffy and shiny, w/ white painted walls that haven't yet developed the patina of age.  The servers' shirts, emblazoned w/ the restaurant's motto, "WE CHOKE OUR OWN CHICKENS", look vaguely out of place here.  Service was lovely, attentive and friendly in a down home, old fashioned way.  I got a martini to the waitress's hearty approval.  The cost was about half what I would have paid at home.  The chicken was perfectly cooked, just not noticeably seasoned.  Alan had chicken fried steak, which was OK.  Bob had a hamburger, which was pretty good, though he was disdainful of the fries, which were not crisp enough for his taste.  He declared the cinnamon roll the highlight of the meal.  But the thing that really keeps me from giving this a 4th star is that there were *commercials* in the bathroom!  I'm not kidding.  Commercials were projected on the mirror while sound blared out of a speaker in the ceiling.  I was completely...dare I say it...pissed off!  That's one of the most obnoxious innovations I've seen in a long time.  When we left there were lines of people waiting, inside and out.  They have chairs in the hallway on the way to the bathrooms and, more importantly, to the handicapped entrance/exit, which makes it difficult for those w/ mobility problems to get out that way.  Not good planning.

I am still a little baffled by the low ratings here.  The place is a fried chicken joint, not The French Laundry.  Their chicken is the best in town (though one could make an argument for The Peach Trees wonderful chicken) and the cinamon rolls are to die for.  I can undertand that some people think it is a bit expensive for fried chicken, but I am sure all would agree that it is worth $6 more than a KFC meal!!!!!  Don't waste any room on the salad or green beans (the soup is great though!).  Other than that, I always find myself savoring every bite here!
