Straub Clinic & Hospital
2 reviews for Straub Clinic & Hospital
Recently my grandma-in-law went through a quadruple bypass.
That's right people. QUADRUPLE. As in FOUR.
She's pretty rugged.
After being medi-vac'd out of Kauai when her EKG was suspect and her subsequent Echo even worse, Straub is where she landed for her diagnostic angiogram and eventual surgery.
Having worked in cardiology for 5 years, I knew what to expect. What I didn't expect to find was such a great experience here in Hawaii. Not because I don't love living in Hawaii but because medical care here is not on the same level as on the mainland.
I am so glad that I was wrong!
Grandma came out of her surgery better than ANYONE I have ever seen. No exaggeration. I'm not sure if this is because of her strong constitution or because the doctors, nurses and staff are superb. I'm going to credit it as a combination.
It had to be one of the most wonderful experiences with my new family that I've gone through. There we all were in the cafeteria (having eaten a decidedly UN-heart healthy breakfast of coffee, corned beef hash, eggs, bacon and fried rice in the cafeteria...SO good!) discussing grandma's condition and preparing grandpa (89 years old and mostly wheelchair bound). We all headed up to her room and it was like Christmas. Grandma's eyes twinkled, she hugged and kissed us all and you would never have guessed at the extent of the surgery she had gone through. Amidst all the aunties joking and laughing with her, Dr. Stratton came in to check on his patient. At first, he seemed overwhelmed with our huge family contingent but he quickly took it in stride and shook hands with one and all. He seemed pleased with grandma's recovery and made all of us feel good about it too.
The hospital itself is clean and tidy and full of enough modern touches to make me feel satisfied that top care is being delivered. This is quite remarkable as it isn't a big hospital by mainland standards.
I'm really glad grandma landed here because her health is going to be all the better for it!
I LOVE the clinic side of Straub's main facility. I don't like going to the doctor but when I used to live in Honolulu and I needed to, I liked going to Straub's main clinic because even the exam rooms at the doctors' offices have tons of pillows. While waiting for the doctor to see me, there were always 2 very thick pillows on the exam table and I always sat on both of them at once. Both the exam table and the chair are hard and it was always soooo VERY nice to sit on a stack of very thick pillows.... That always made an uncomfortable doctor's visit a LOT more comfortable for me. I also liked when the nurses were always willing to give me more pillows when I asked them. Can't complain...
