We have stayed at the Stratford for over 20 years but this year may be the last. The price keeps going up and they keep taking things away. The once free, help yourself breakfast is gone and is replaced by the "Boulevard Cafe" They give you a card which must be checked in order to get coffee and one free breakfast item. This can create quite a long wait.Gone are the apples and oranges and danish pastry. Instead we have very dry and stale tasting scones, something called "Muffin tops" which were ok and Croissants stuffed with ham and chesse(if you are lucky) and the ever present feta and spinch crosisants. HOW ABOUT A PLAIN CROISSANT?
A fruit cup was listed but never available in the week we were there. when I asked, I was told, "well that is very popular and sells out" I got there at 7am, give me a break. Just say it's too much trouble to cut the fruit.
The once comfortable Queen Ann chairs in the lobby and the upstairs area are gone, replaced with uncomfortable chairs .I know it sounds strange but I really used to enjoy sitting in those chairs after a long walk from town.
There is a BIg screen Tv in the former reading area but "It is not connected yet"
An elderly woman asked me where all the books were and I had to tell her that they were now in the guest laundry room along with the board games our kids used to play. Why would you do that?
The people at the front desk were wonderful as usual but admitted 50% of the guests do not like these changes. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
This is an ordinary, moderately-priced motel. I would stay here again, but only if other places were booked.
They have a swimming pool, but it is very small, indoors, and often taken over by groups of schoolkids (who are bussed here for the Shakespeare Festival).
The continental breakfast is above average in offerings and quality, and the large, sunny, second-floor lounge where guests eat is quite pleasant.
I like the Ashland Springs Hotel the best, but we couldnt get a room. For the same price ($140), we got a much bigger room here and with two separate queens to boot (I went with a friend). Not to mention it includes a continental breakfast. Which wasn't much to speak of, but the coffee was passable and there were mini-bagels, and they were open till 11, which we barely made each day.
My main complaint is that there was no one manning the front desk when we got there at 5:05 after the long drive from californy...and we had to make a 5:30 dinner reservation. We had to wait like 10 minutes and then we were late for dinner.
The other thing is the bathroom fan is pretty weak. I need a nice strong one :) The place is rather nondescript inside, but roomy. The Ashland Springs Hotel is much spiffier but the rooms are small. In terms of where the action is, this is a couple blocks from the action. Not particulary quaint (it's across the street from a safeway).
Our room with a "view" of the hills also was a view of the parking lot.
Usually I camp on the way up, at Mt Lassen which is really lovely, but it was not meant to be this year.
