I really like their pizza here! I have only ever had the "by the slice" version and never took a whole pie home but would in a heartbeat. The only thing that I would have to say is that its best eaten no more then 10 - 15 mins after you receive it. The crust is fairly thin and is very crispy but over time it looses that crunch and is not quite as appealing.
I have had their lunch special (2 slices and a soda) many times and I hope to have them again for a long while!
The pizza's delicious, the employees are as nice as can be, and they have newspaper hanging on the walls for your reading pleasure! Now how can you argue with that?
This is the place to hit if you've got a craving for thin pizza - you know, the kind you fold over and scarf up while guzzling your favorite beverage. This is not to be confused with the bread-y kind with various good-for-you or exotic toppings that is meant to be savored.
They've got good lunch specials that are easy on wallet, and they run a coupon on the EatSalem blog for a whole pie. Lunch service is fast and you can catch up on the news while you eat thanks to the newspapers festooning the walls along the seating bar.
I love there Pizza. It is nice to be able to go in and order a slice or two in what you want and if you are with other people they can order what they want.
Good NY style pizza. I don't know anything about owners or cooks, but I liked the finished product.
The special of 2 pieces of pizza and a soda, will run you $6.50 as of 2/7/09, but that's not too bad considering. I loved the vegetarian slice i got (more than the pepperoni), great flavor and lots of toppings.
While the pizza here might not qualify as "straight from NY" it is mighty close by Salem standards. Besides the prices can be hard to beat if you go in the late afternoon (3-6pm perhaps???)--They offer great two-for-one deals with a free drink etc...
This is not a sit-down place though, sitting can only be found at counters, or on a sunny day, outside at a few cafe tables. I love this place and while it doesn't quite satisfy my desire for east-coast pizza, it comes damn close, closer than any other pizza place in Salem anyway.
This is the best pizza on the west coast. It's not a big doughy thing that balloons in your stomach to make you a candidate for gastric bypass surgery. It's a thin crusted delicious pizza that is perfectly crunchy and tasty.
I've been eating here since 1992 and it's still my favorite pizza.
Oh, by the way, it's the best place to eat alone with the newspaper clipped in front of your face. Basking in the aloneness of food, drinks and a good read. I can't think of a happier place to be except bed.
I love this place! I drive up from Corvallis just to get pizza from here, in my opinion it is hands down the best pizza Ive found from Portland to Eugene. If you want a nice thin crust pizza with some good sauce, look no farther. Straight From New York will be missed when I move out of Oregon.
The pizza here is hot, fresh, tasty, large, and cheap. It's every college student's dream. Where taste and cost are concerned, the place deserves 5 stars.
So why am I only giving it 4 stars? Well, like almost everything in Salem, the place closes at friggin' 7 o'clock! I was quite miffed to find this out after I went all the way down there, craving pizza like hell.
Straight from Salem is more like it.
This is by no means a knock on how some Salem restaurants make pizza, in fact some pizza places in Salem are my favorite in all of the world. However, Straight From New York tries to emulate something that its not, which is authentic New York big slice pizza. The pizza here is reminiscent of S'barro's which can literally taste like cardboard or can be extra cheesy bread with tomato sauce. If one has actually had New York pizza, this place is a sad imitation. The real thing has thick ingredients, good foldable size per slice, and a taste that is distinctive (could be a regional preparation thing too) enough to be classified as New York style. This place tries hard, but fails to capitalize on a theme that would throw a few NYers off. It could also be that the locals don't dig New York style pizza, which is fine. But if that's the case, then they need to change the business name.
Man, I don't know why anyone would think 'Straight from New York Pizza' is not authentic. The joint is owned by a super friendly Mexican guy and I'll tell you, I've been to New York City many a time and I've had the pizza there . . . . and I STILL think 'Straight from New York' is better (or as us local Salemites like to call it, 'Straight From'). The pizza is a large slice (more is always better, right?), it's always nice and hot and always fresh. It is hand made on the spot. Never over or under baked, not too crispy or too soft, but just right in between. You have your choice of many different flavors, including, but not limmited to: Cheese (my favorite), Pepperoni, and Vegie. You can put parmasean cheese or tomatoe basil on your pizza and wash it all down with a cool soda or Jones. T
The atmosphere is quiet, friendly, and intimate. It is not a place you would bring your family of 6, but rather somewhere you and a friend might come for a 2-hour long convo over some yummy cheese pizza. You can sit inside and enjoy sweet music, or sit outside with the breeze and watch as downtown Salem swirls around you.
So few places in Salem offer pizza by the slice to where you can just come in, grab it, and leave.
Overall, I think it is fabulous becuase it is unique. It is authentic. It is intimate. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of restaurant life and skinny pizza than come to 'Straight From' . . . you won't regret it, my friend.
It is located in 2 spots: A smaller venue with bar seating and outside seating on Liberty St. Downtown or a larger, more sit down place on South Commercial.
Cheese Pizza $$$: 2.50
They have special deals as well (2 pieces of pizza and a soda for $5.50)
Best pizza in town!
