One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
Stove is quite possibly my favorite Astoria restaurant. The staff is knowledge, friendly, and fun. They have Guinness and Smithwick's on tap, among a couple others, and the food is amazing.
I love the barbecue rib appetizer and smoked salmon with capers and toast wedges is good, as well. I've had or tried almost all of their entrees and enjoyed them all; there's not a single disappointment on the menu. Everything is flavored, balanced and cooked just right. The chicken Kiev and pork chops stand out in my mind as particularly good choices. They also have daily specials like bacon wrapped scallops and Shepard's pie (so good!). The brunch options are delicious and a great deal. Their eggs Benedict is among my top three favorites.
So, Stove is not close to anything at all but worth the walk. I've been there twice - once for brunch and then a few times for dinner. Each time, the food was fantastic and the staff were very friendly and quick.
The restaurant, at first glance, seems subpar to what you would expect in NYC (not much decoration or flair). It is a simple, small restaurant with a little garden in the back (which is where I had brunch during the summer). It has a very quiet, subdued atmosphere that allows you to actually enjoy your dinner and company without competing with loud groups, loud music, or loud waitstaff.
The food was delicious, and they often have great daily specials. The prices are very reasonable and the portions good sized.
What the bbq rib?! It's the appetizer, but I make it my main course. There are 4 riblets of the most falling off the bone, tender, flavor-filled/finger licking good pork EVER! This is making my venture towards trying to be vegan BAD.
I love the beet salad also. The overtly sweetness of the beets with the sweet vinegar balsamic dressing played well together, but I felt like my whole meal is on hyper drive. I love flavor, but I found myself taking a swig of water here and there to "clean" the pallet.
Oh yeah, the inside is very old and cozy. I like sitting outside (especially weather permitting) because it gives it more of that laid back feel. Plus it's nice to get "relaxed" with a beer or two if you're sitting on the bench along the fence perimeter. Only issue, BUGS. It's okay. They can nosh on me. I'll replenish by eating some more food. It's quite a bit of a walk if you're coming to and from a subway station, but it will be a life saver especially after a hearty meal like that.
My tummy is happy...
I really never would have expected this place to be where it was. It's not really near any other restaurants, not anything else for that matter
Firstly, reservations are very important on the weekend. I called on a Friday afternoon for a reservation for 2- and was ridiculed for calling for one. Yes, call early.
It's a small place. The bar spills into the eating area and the wait staff doesn't have much room to move. That being said, the drinks are solid and fairly priced.
We had 4 waiters/waitresses over the course of the night. I don't know if this is par for the course, but It was jarring. Luckily, the service was pretty good for all of them. I had the rib salad appetizer. It was not much of as salad- maybe one spoonful of cabbage and carrot; however, the ribs were delicious. I had weiner schnitzel for dinner, and although I'd never had it before, I was not disappointed. It was very tender and deliciously breaded. I didn't expect this kind of food so far into my neighborhood, but I am very pleased by it, and although it wasn't earth shattering, it was good upscale European inspired food and worth the trip for outsiders, but a DEFINITE for astoria folk.
Me likey! Was suppose to head into the city for brunch but got going late so (being a Queens resident) thought I'd give Astoria a shot. Through the magic of Yelp, I came across Stove and decided to give it a try. Friend and I arrived on Sunday afternoon at around 1:30. There was no wait (but I had called earlier for rsvps just in case) and service was extremely prompt. They have a special brunch menu which incl. a complimentary mimosa, bloody mary, coffee or tea with your food choice. I went with the eggs benedict + home fries, my friend got the eggs royale which is like eggs benedict w salmon and not ham with french fries. It was YUMS!!! Loved my egg benedict! definitely one of the better ones I've ever had. everything was right about it--the sauce, the egg, the creamy texture mixed in with the ham and muffin. Home fries were also really good. We had the mimosas which were good as well and all in all a good, cheap ($10 for my plate), no wait brunch experience! Would definitely go back now that I've been. There's a garden in the back which was closed since it's cold now, and ambience was nice--casual and clean, just the way I like it :)
First of all, I love the fact that Stove is only 2 avenues away from my apartment and second of all, I have eaten at Stove about 10 times now and have never been disappointed!!!!!
From the quiet outdoor seating area, to the aromatic aromas of Decklin's Beef Bourguignon, and classic Sheppard's pie.... ....Stove really takes the icing on the cake....."oh did I mention the chocolate molten cake or the apple pie"?
One word...YUMMY!
There are certain people who can complain about anything. Like Byron Hadley (of Shawshank infamy). He inherited a large sum of money, and whined about the taxes and the hassle that came with it. If I was Captain Hadley, I imagine I could find plenty of things to complain about while dining at Stove:
Our waitress is so damn cheerful; what the Christ is this happy horseshit? This menu is too tempting; we're going to have to order the baked clams, the mussels, AND the ribs to start. Stove: reaching into your shirt and squeezing your tit till it's purple. Ah, damn them for having one filet special left. Now I HAVE to get it. White wine? Ugh. Drink up while it's cold, ladies.
Goddamnit! The appetizers taste fantastic. Now I've got to finish every last bit, and it's going to spoil my entree. Oh, this is bullshit; my filet is perfectly cooked. Everyone's going to be begging me for some. And who are these assholes I'm with who want to let me taste everything? They're probably trying to kill me, feeding me this the delicious pork chop, the amazing shell steak AND the baked salmon.
Did you see this check? This meal is entirely too reasonable. Who do they think they are, charging these prices? Now all my other meals are going to seem expensive and mediocre. I'm sick of this Stove place.

What? You don't like this review? You fat barrel of monkey spunk. What's your malfunction? I'm not gonna to count to three. I'm not even gonna count to one. You will shut the FUCK up or I'll sing you a lullaby.
I love the fact Stove is just about a three (3) blocks away from us. Our friends introduced us to to this restaurant and the fist time we were here, we were seated at their outdoor garden. We loved it! The server was friendly and right after the meal as she was removing the glasses and plates, I told her that I was still finishing my drink, she said:"Don't worry, this is an Irish bar restaurant, we know better than to grab drinks away from people!" -_-
I remember the brunch we had and among the things we ordered were corned beef hash, burger, fish and chips, salad etc. I'll update this review when we've tried the dinner menu.
I had an incredible brunch experience at Stove this past weekend. It was the perfect place for my boyfriend and I to bring his parents.
We made reservations, which was smart, because by 12:30 the place was packed. Our waitress was fantastic- she was very helpful and checked in with us just enough without being annoying.
I had the eggs benedict, and although it was the first time I'd had the dish (yes, I've been sheltered, apparently) I would've been totally satisfied if it were my last meal. It came with homefries and a mimosa for $10- a total steal! Everyone else had the omelette (with Irish bacon and cheese) and raved about it also.
My only complaint is that it's a bit off the beaten path- but Stove is well worth the $9 cab ride from my place.
I did not want to do naked cartwheels like some Yelpers, but I did enjoy my meal. There was just something amiss...
We went on a Friday night. We had a failed attempt at Kebab Cafe- didn't have any cash on us, so we wandered a bazillion blocks out of our way to go to Stove because Hubby so sweetly remembered-I've had Stove on my bookmark list since we moved here in 2007.
We sat down and the waitress started rattling off specials, which I hate-maybe this was the turnoff point in the night. Servers who rattle off specials like a robot are about as exciting as having sex with someone who won't.stop.talking.
Mid-coitus I have been tempted to find a sock on the bedroom floor and stuff it into the mouths of former lovers for talking to much during sex. We're talking like full on life story between the sheets. Just because I'm getting to know you biblically doesn't mean I need you to tell me a story as long as the Bible.
Hi, I'm trying to get off her. Could you stop babbling!? The only words I want to hear are "oh god!" and a little "oh yeah, right there!" Sexy time is not the time to tell your life story. Neither is when I sit down at a restaurant. Thank you! I'm sure you stuffed cabbage is phenomenal and your braised whatever the hell you were talking about is nice, but couldn't you just write it down and let me read?
Other than this rant about the specials, here is what I can say-
The fried calamari was cooked well-not too rubbery
The steak w/sauce was alright. The cut of steak wasn't fabulous, but the brandy sauce made up for it.
The meal was relatively cheap since we had drinks, an app and 2 entrees.
Perhaps the problem with Stove was me and not them, but you know....perception is reality.
My favorite brunch spot in the 5 boros!
Nice knowledgeable staff, and they do a great irish fry up!
It might feel a bit off the beaten path but I assure you, it's absolutely worth it.
One sunday afternoon while I was lounging on the bench out front idly digesting my brunch an old-timer came up to me and started waxing poetic about the eggs benedict that he had last week. Awesome.
I've put off writing a review for this place despite having come here multiple times.
The reason? I'm a greedy bastard.
There I said it. You see everything I've ever had on this menu has been incredibly delicious. On top of that the service has always been impeccable, despite usually being just one or two servers for the entire restaurant.
It's my neighborhood treasure and secret. The two "They love us on Yelp" stickers plastered on their front windows is absolutely true. I'm hoping because of the fact it's so far out of the way that it'll remain the little gem that it is.
It can get pretty busy here during dinner and their rotating specials each evening is something that isn't normally expected at a restaurant this size. The chef certainly has some serious skills and I'm surprised a bigger joint hasn't come along trying to snap them up.
Try everything here. SERIOUSLY. None of them are misses, they are all hits.
This is also one of those few places where I will find any excuse to go to. Want company for dinner? I am game, as long as it is Stove.
I've had this on my "to try" list ever since I moved to Astoria.
That was 2 years ago. Whoops.
We finally made it in last month. Parking sucks anywhere in that area, and we would have walked but it was raining a bit, and after a couple laps trying to find parking, it started to POUR. By the time we walked into Stove, we were literally soaked to the bone. I'm talking, "Hi, I just jumped in the pool in my clothing, table for 2 please" wet. When they saw us, they immediately offered towels and asked if there was anything they could do to make us more comfortable. They then sat us at a nice table for 2, which was small enough to be romantic and cozy, but large enough that we didn't have to stack our dishes on top of another and ask them to take the candle off in order to make room for our wine glasses (you know what I'm talking about). It was just right.
Our server was awesome (EDIT: Her name was ROBYN. Confirmed! And Robyn, if you are reading, this...we are the ones who left you Pez with your tip). Anyhoo, she was great! She went with our jokes, but wasn't annoying (fine line with this in restaurant service). She also helped my ultra-indecisive self choose what to order (Honey glazed double-cut pork chop with bourbon apple compote...more on this in a minute), and checked on us just enough. The only thing that irked us even a little bit, was the OTHER server girl who seemed like it was the last thing on Earth she wanted to be doing when I asked her to please fill my water. Jeez, sorrrry.
The food was amazing. I'll admit that we are very hard to please and I will scrutinize anything that's not damn near perfect. Because of the raving reviews, we decided to take risks and ordered dishes that we are very particular about and still, not one thing about the food disappointed us.
We started with the mussels, which were perfect - large, plump and in the type of sauce that you order extra bread to sop it up with. I got the pork-chop, which is something atypical for me to order in a restaurant, since I prefer how I make it myself...but I honestly don't think that I could mimic what they did with this piece of meat. It tasted so homemade yet so gourmet at the same time. The fresh veggies (string beans that night) were cooked PERFECTLY.
My dining companion ordered one of the specials that night: Goulash. I was very nervous about this, considering how picky he is about certain foods (he will ONLY eat certain foods from certain places or cooked by certain people....goulash is one of them). He took one bite and gave me the raised eyebrow "I can't believe this is actually good" look. Score again.
I was beyond full after the app and entree, but of course she then tells me about dessert (made fresh daily). One of them was pumpkin pie, so I unlocked my 2nd stomach and piled it in. Amazing.
I need to get back there and explore more of the menu, because it all looks so delicious. I'd also love to try brunch. Updates to come...especially if I could remember that girl's freaking name.
*By the way, for anyone who has visited their website, but not in awhile...you may remember it used to kinda....suck. It's recently revamped and WAY better.*
Stove is the pretty good but nothing to get worked up over. It's just honest pub food, prepared as you would expect. If you read the reviews on here and get really excited about going to Stove, then brace yourself for disappointment. (Something to be aware of in Astoria in general is ratings that are too high for the quality. If you are accustomed to Manhattan and Brooklyn reviews, you should typically deduct .5 - 1 stars. That's certainly true for Stove.) If you just want a local place to get Shepherds Pie, Fish and Chips or a burger, then you'll be happy with Stove.
Man, did I want to love Stove. Been waiting to go here. The food was just...um, okay.
Went for brunch and I found all of it to be so-so.
I ordered the cornbeef hash...which came in a patty? A patty!!! Perhaps, i should just head on over to Cronin and Phelan for comfort food or Good Enough to Eat on the UWS as this cornbeef hash was uninspired. Dry even, like their interior. I would have preferred the canned version they would serve at Sanford's. With a name like Stove, I was expecting something cozier, tastier, and less sterile.
Perhaps I should give this place another shot -- at dinner. I'm so disappointed after all the Yelp horn-blowing.
I really really like stove.
Since having their pate, I have not been able to return there without ordering it. They also have a special sometimes, a chicken curry concoction in a pastry shell...outstanding. I also liked their ribs appetizer. The rest either didn't really interest me or just werent that amazing. I'm not a big salad person but I'm sure any of their salads are creative and wonderful.
As far as entrees go, I really enjoyed all their fish dishes, but was not that impressed by their chicken dishes. A friend had the pork chop and it was amazing and their steak and fish and chips are really really good.
Last, but not least, their desserts are really really yummy, all of them.
The atmosphere is wonderful, I definitely feel outside of Astoria and that makes it all the more easy to spend money and every waitress we ever had was wonderful.
I don't often repeat myself, I don't like doing that, but I will leave all the reallys in this review because they are necessary to convey my point!
I went with a group of four and we had an excellent time.
We ordered the warm beet salad, pate, and onion soup as appetizers. The warm beet salad was great, the beets were completely saturated with balsamic. The pate was good but the jelly served with it seemed like an afterthought and didn't really match the pate, it was too sweet and overshadowed the pate. A fig jam might have been better, but you can just ignore the jelly anyways. The onion soup was perfect.
As entrees we ordered the shepherds pie, crab stuffed sole, and chicken special with white wine reduction. All three were excellent and there were no complaints. Presentation was very nice for all three as well.
For dessert we went with the chocolate mousse and the bread pudding. The chocolate mousse was delicious and the bread pudding was incredibly rich and buttery. Everybody at the table loved both desserts.
The whole experience was amazing from the moment we walked in the door until our waitress, Michelle, graciously asked us if we needed a cab and called a car service for us. Even the car service was great. It was a good for only around $25 per person, one of the best value meals I've had in the city!
After reading the reviews here, I was excited to try a restaurant closer to my new digs after leaving the bustling Broadway area of Astoria. I'm sorry to say I was quite disappointed. A beet and goat cheese salad can't be beat in my book, but the warm goat cheese salad, while tasty, certainly wasn't the dream dish described here. This is a meat and potatoes kind of place -- which is not a bad thing -- so I ordered the hanger steak. It was charred on the outside, though I'd asked for medium rare, and apart from the flavor of crusty blackened meat, I could detect no other discernible taste. Hanger steak is no filet mignon, I realize, but it was a tough piece of meat I must say. This isn't a bad place, but for the price and the hype, I expected a lot more. The lingering odor of ammonia in the place -- while indicating cleanliness -- really did not contribute to the atmosphere.
I don't know.... I don't know.... This place did not really do it for me. I will come back and hopefully update my rating to something better. I came in on a very busy day and the food took about an hour to get to us..... which is not a problem, we had time to kill, but my french onion soup was room temperature. It did not taste as good as I anticipated either. My boyfriends food was pretty dry, very little sauce + naturally dry = eh. The crab cakes tasted great though.
I think I am going to go again, during a time where I know it wont be so busy - hopefully it will be a better experience for me and I will update my rating.
Had dinner at Stove this past weekend and it was terrific. My mom said it was the best duck she'd had in a long time, and I loved my blackened tilapia. The waitress couldn't have been nicer, and the chef even offered to buy as an after-dinner drink because my mom had asked for a sharper knife for the duck and he surmised that it must have been too tough (for his obviously high standards!)
Hands down, my favorite restaurant in Astoria. The steak with peppercorn cognac cream sauce cannot be beat. I always thought that sauce on a steak is like gilding a lily...it's already a beautiful thing, so why mess with it? Well, I was wrong. It's amazing, and gloriously enhances the flavors of the perfectly cooked steak. Even my mother, who is the pickiest eater I know, enjoyed every last bite of her pork chop.
Delicious meal. In the land of Greek restaurants, it is surprising to find a good classic American style restaurant.
Entrees are all in the $15-$18 range and are generous portions. Nothing too adventurous on the menu, but what they do, they do perfectly.
The french onion soup is outstanding.
i have put off writing this review for weeks because i really don't know how to give this place the respect it deserves.
to start, some questions:
1. do you like food that tastes really delicious?
2. are you a human being?
if you answered 'yes' to either of these questions, then you should get a table at stove and eat at your favorite restaurant***.
i came here with friends. usually i pick the place we eat, and it can be it or miss, since i am still relatively new in town and like to try new places. but this time, my homeboy eric insisted we come here and he was adamant about it, who was i to argue?
the ambiance is very intimate and soft, and after i left i was already waxing nostalgic about my dinner and i thought the decor and the food fit perfectly together. i never think about that sort of junk after i eat. i usually just wonder who is gonna roll me a j. but stove had me in a serious post-pig out reverie.
the menu is filled with traditional american classics. i noticed this immediately. i ate a lot, so i hope you're still reading.
appetizers:
i got the jumbo shrimp cocktail with tequila lime cocktail sauce. my mouth is watering just remembering how fresh and tangy this tasted. i also tasted the bacon stuffed clams and the BBQ ribs in hickory sauce. they were both outstanding.
my entree:
i had the new york shell steak, medium rare, with a cognac cream sauce flavored with peppercorn. it came with mashed potatoes and i got an extra side of sauteed' mushrooms. the cut of steak was perfection, the mashed potatoes were probably churned out by the baby jesus himself, and the mushrooms barely got touched once i topped off my boyfriend crock of french onion soup with was absolutely terrific.
i would eat here every night if i could. i think this is the best meal, overall, start to finish, i have ever had in new york city. i am going to end this review right now and try to find someone to take me here today or tomorrow.
even my post-dinner coffee tasted great.
***if some other place serves your favorite meal, prepare to upgrade.
INCREDIBLE!!!
Had dinner at this place which is located in my neighborhood. I had heard good reviews about this place, but never went. The food was incredible, the prices are reasonable for the neighborhood.
This restaurant is continental european type food, the owner comes from Ireland and studied at a culinary institute, out there. He moved to France and worked in restaurants out there. He came to the US and worked at Windows on the World and another place called Kennedy's...Finally, he opened his own establishment.
I started out with the beet and goat cheese salad...medallions of goat cheese on top of sliced beets, this was accompanied by julienned slivers of apple and pear with a drizzle of balsamic vinigarette. The salad was tart and sweet at the same time, but both flavors complimented each other very nicely
The entree was a double cut pork chop with a bourbon glaze accompanied by applesauce that was mixed with chunks of apples, golden raisins and a dash of cinnamon...a baked potato and fresh vegetable medley accompanied the pork chop. It was a hearty meal, and it left me feeling satisfied. The pork wasn't greasy and the apple compote was the perfect compliment to the meat.
I just had to have the chocolate mousse for dessert...chocolate mousse with a hint of some kind of coffee liqueur, maybe kahlua with real cream as a topping, none of that stuff that squirts out of a canister.
I hardly ever go out to eat like this, but lately more and more bistro type restaurants are opening up around the neighborhood, and the prices are pretty reasonable.
This place also has a Sunday brunch that people rave about.
After finishing my scrumptious meal, I was told that this is the best kept secret in Astoria, and I think that may be something to that. The location doesn't do much to reveal that secret. It's nestled in a small set of stores in a very residential on the borders of Astoria and Woodside. Please don't let the location sway you however, the food, hospitality, and atmosphere are worth the trek.
When we first arrived we sat out in the out door patio. It seemed to me a perfect spot to have a pint and a small dinner. But after looking at the menu, I knew I wasn't going to let a simple thing like not being hungry stop me from gorging myself. 3 Beers, soup, appetizer, entree and desert later, I was completely awed by everything presented to me. Delicious, deceptively simple fare and a warm environment.
I plan on becoming a regular.
i read so many great reviews about stove that i had to check it out, but i'm sad to say that i was hugely disappointed. started off with the warm beet salad, which was okay, but over-dressed with super tart balsamic dressing. the french onion soup was pretty good, but the rosettes of sole were AWFUL. it smelled fishy and tasted like it had been frozen, definitely not fresh at all. my appetite was completely ruined for dessert, so i can't even review that. this was a truly disappointing experience and i doubt i'll go back.
It's a sunday night and my bf and I were in the adventurous mood to try a new restaurant in Astoria. After consulting our good friends on Yelp, we stumbled upon the restaurant STOVE. Looked up the menu online... which was disappointing bc there was a glitch and the entree menu didn't appear. After much debating back and forth between two restaurants my bf and I decided to try this place out.
This place was a bit on the empty side which only fed our apprehension. But this restaurant was very cute and had a quaint feel to it. Our server was very friendly and helpful. We tried the mussel appetizer and the bbq ribs appetizer. DELICIOUS! i had the french onion soup and my bf had the special cream of mushroom. Another delicious course. Then we decided to split the 16 oz steak with cognac sauce. Another tasty dish... we got an extra side of the sauteed mushrooms... loved it!
i couldn't believe that we were not disappointed with one dish that we ordered... i was actually more suprised that we had scarfed down the amount of food that we had! Just when we thought we were about to waddle of fat arses out the door, our waitress asks us if we would like to try some dessert. Our immediate reaction was "no way... so full" but as she described the desserts... our minds were swayed...
We ordered the chocolate mousse... wow... can i just say... now that was the best chocolate mousse i have ever had! its funny because my bf had to convince me to order the dessert... but i was the one that pratically polished off the whole mousse on my own... hehe
Anyways... needless to say... we will be regular patrons of this restaurant... we've already planned to come back here next sunday with my bf's brother and wife! haha.. i already know what i want to try next... yummy yum yums!
oh fyi.. they have a garden patio which will be open soon as the weather warms up... i can't wait!
I recently took two of my closest friends, a couple, to Stove, a local Astoria treasure which still seems to be one of the neighborhood's best-kept secrets. I promised them a meal they'd not soon forget, as I had been there not too long ago with another friend who agreed with me that the food was absolutely wonderful. In particular (and I noticed other people who have rated this restaurant have commented on it, too) the warm beet and goat-cheese salad was truly a masterpiece in flavor and presentation: caramelized pralines garnished a mixed spring-green salad, with generous dollops of herbed goat cheese and sliced beets in a balsamic reduction; I spread the delicious cheese on the crusty bread that is served throughout the meal - you could literally make a meal of just the salad and the bread here! For my entree, I ordered a savory goulash; the meat was fork-tender and the sauce was rich and creamy, traditionally prepared with sour cream and loaded with flavorful mushrooms...I dare say it was as good as my grandmother's, in fact! For dessert, I shared a slice of the heavenly cheese cake, which is smooth as velvet yet light as air, floating on a bed of oreo-cookie crumb crust - divinely satisfying but mysteriously not over-filling! It must be the fresh-whipped cream that the chef prepares to make this sinfully delicious treat... And who could forget the sumptuous fruity cocktails? I don't quite remember what the concoction was, but I remember it had Malibu (what can be bad about that?) and was the perfect salute to a summer evening... My friend, who also enjoys cooking as I do, is usually difficult to impress, especially since he's born & raised in Astoria. His fiancee, my best friend, is a great fan of fine cuisine, and the three of us agreed that this is by far one of Astoria's finest restaurants - I can't believe I've lived here nearly 8 years and have only discovered it now! Treat your loved ones to this little gem - a great staff at a terrific dining spot!
Pros: Pleasant atmosphere; lovely garden in back, not too crowded, within walking distance from train and/or bus
Cons: can't think of any!!!
I absolutely love this place - hands down!
I came here because of Yelp reviews. (I love Yelp!) I had made reservations for a group of 9 on a Saturday night.
Some of the best items on the menu are:
o Warm Goat Cheese Salad - special (not on the menu) - goat cheese was really fresh and the salad dressing was fantastic
o French Onion Soup - yum. That's all I have to say.
o Ribs appetizer - barbecued ribs with cabbage & carrot salad & smoked hickory sauce - hands down (best ribs ever!)
o Honey glazed double-cut pork chop with bourbon apple compote - the apple compote was really good
o Ribs - special (not on the menu) as a meal - the sauce on the ribs was fantastic.
o Chocolate Martini - The drink was being passed around the table to taste test, and everyone else started ordering it afterwards. I had ordered several mojitos. What I've noticed is that their drinks are delicate and not overly sweetened.
o Bread Pudding - I don't know what sauce is on it, but it's fantastic!
o Cool Creme Brulee - I like the cool creme brulee - it was nice and refreshing end to a great meal.
o Pumpkin Pie - I'm not a big fan of pumpkin - my friend and boyfriend said that it's the best pumpkin pie they've ever had.
We loved our waitress - Courtney (?). The bartender, Paul, was also fantastic. I loved both of them because they acted like the restaurant was theirs and made us feel as comfortable as possible rather than just "doing their jobs".
Declan, the master chef, also came out after the meal to greet us. Very pleasant guy.
I will definitely be back. It's worth the 20 minute hike from the train station. Food is fantastic & definitely worth every penny of your hard earned money.
i ordered the fish and chips entree as an appetizer. (i know i know)
i came here upon the suggestion of yelp - as the neighbor has been taking my time out subscription (grr.)
this place didnt disappoint, and im glad i found it through yelp. the better part of it is the fact that its a 20 minute bus ride from my house - hopstop indicates that it is far from the subway.
the staff is nice and friendly and the ambiance is classy casual. if you want to subtly impress a date, i suggest this place.
I visited Stove shortly after it opened, and I was disappointed. The food had great potential, the menu was interesting, but I was almost positive that the chef had never seen a pepper mill in his life.
Last week, I gave it a second chance due to a number of online positive reviews. I'm happy to report that it was a total turnaround! I ordered the bourbon glazed pork chops. They were cooked perfectly, the pork was juicy and flavorful. It also came on a bed of the most wonderful tasting apple stuff. My dining partner ordered the fish and chips, and was happy to report that it was the best he had tasted since arriving in NYC.
On top of the food being excellent, the service was friendly and well timed.
I highly recommend Stove to anyone looking for a high quality, romantic meal in Astoria.
This place popped up a couple years ago and was right around the corner. We were quite sad to leave being so close when we moved. It's romantic but not so much so that it'd be awkward with friends, the prices are a little high for its locale but not for the atmosphere or food (honestly all that's near it is pizza places so there really aren't comps). Drinks are great, staff's nice and helpful, food is phenomenal. We've never been for brunch but I'm sure it's great
Must haves:
French Onion soup (best my husband or I've EVER had)
Steak with peppercorn cream sauce-yum!
Everything else is great too-always hard to choose!
Stove is worth the trip off the beaten path for brunch on a lazy Sunday. The interior is so-so, a little stuffy, so I'd recommend going on a day when you can sit out back. I had the quiche of the day which was AWESOME and everything else around the table looked great (and all brunch entrees come with a complimentary drink!)
After all of the good reviews that I read on Yelp, I had to take a trip to Stove. From the moment that my boyfriend and I walked in to the moment that we left, we had the best experience. We're total foodies and we were completely blown away by our dishes. We both started with special appetizers: mac and cheese for him and a chicken puff pastry for me - both were amazing! For dinner I had steak and he had the pork tenderloin special... Both dishes were perfectly prepared!! PS - make sure you save room for dessert, the chocolate mousse and the creme brulee cannnot be missed!!
If I had to pick between a Manhattan restaurant and Stove, I'd pick Stove hands down.
This is a gem of the neighborhood. It's as good as everybody says. Price is right also unlike some restaurants in Astoria with Manhattan price. Had a great dinner for $45 / person including wine, beer, soup, appetizer, entree, tax and tip. Awesome French Onion Soup. Pork loin entree was delicious. Everything was cooked right and flavored deliciously. Definitely want to come back to try everything on the menu.
Only ate here for brunch, but it was very good.
I have high hopes for the dinner, though (I'm reserving the last star). The staff was nice and friendly - and the food was very good. I can't wait to try the dinner here.
Again, a class act. Especially in the wake of our awful experience at "Bar 36."
GOOD.
Hard to find but well worth the search. The menu is really well crafted. Warm and inviting staff that you can usually find at The Quays down the street after closing. Wonderful neighborhood restaurant.
Brilliant! One of Astoria's hidden gems. So nondescript and off the beaten path (read: a good walk from any Astoria train station), but SO worth the trip. You will be shocked how good the food is here. I lived ON THE SAME BLOCK as it, but didn't go for more than a year. Now I walk over a mile in the cold to get there!
The chef here is the best I've come across in Queens. I've now had the steak with peppercorn sauce, the pork, the sole with crabmeat, a few specials and of course, that yummy, soul-warming French onion soup.
Also, the bartender is outstanding. Had a martini that was better than most and under $10 (at least I'm pretty sure it was) as well as a few other cocktails along the way. I've never been disappointed or gotten a watered-down drink. Good beers on tap if you're into that.
Decor is, eh, but staff has always been very attentive and that's much more important to me.
If it's been on your list, stop waiting -- go. You will not be sorry. Stove rocks.
This is a very welcoming establishment. The staff is warm & friendly (I would say they're Irish as well, but that would be redundant). As for the food, it's hearty but polished. They have Guinness on tap and they also serve old fashioned sherry trifle for desert. What's not to love?! I'm looking forward to going back (maybe on a cold night - Stove's the perfect place to warm up).
