1 star for the stout selection. (Hmmm Chocolate Stout *droooool*)
+ 1 star for the reasonalbe prices
+ 1 star for carrying Longhorn games
+ 2 stars for the great service
Minus 2 stars for 250dB music preventing any kind of human interaction. It's like they don't think people are going to a pub to talk to each other. The music selection isn't bad, mind you. But it doesn't need to be blaring through the speakers.
Not a bad place, but not a great place, either.
We asked for a table at around 6pm on a Tuesday, killing some time and grabbing a few drinks before meeting up with some friends. The place was already packed with suits and ties.
They didn't have any happy hour deals and the waitress got one of my drink orders wrong. I'm not complaining because these things don't really matter . . . since I'm probably never going back.
Stout is as generic as Garment District bars get.
Eh... Let's weigh this one out, shall we?
Pro - Amazing selection of beers (not many bars carry my fav: St Peter Cream Stout). Stout NYC is really for your brew afficionado; If you are a budweiser or PBR type, this place is not your playground.
Con - This full selection of beers is many times limited to the main floor. I've walked in at 6pm ordered Mother's Milk from the main floor bar then headed downstairs. By the time I'm ready to order a second one, I'm SOOL. This has happened to me a couple of times already and so I refuse to believe they "ran out" at such an early time of the evening.
Pro - The size of this bar is crazy... two and a half floors to get your mutha effin drink on!
Con - Even though this place is huge, it somehow manages to still get crowded to the point where there's a line at the door... really?!
Pro - Food is not bad for a bar. Be adventurous and try the different dips they offer for your fries, they're pretty good and go well with any brew.
Pro - concert nights are pretty great here! Stout will typically play songs and sometimes past concert footage of the artist/band playing MSG that night. Crowd always enjoys this pre-gaming tradition and, the final "pro" is that its across the street from the Garden / Penn Station.
Although its not perfect, this is still my preferred bar anytime I'm in the area and you can be sure to find me @ Stout next time Billy Joel or AC/DC rolls back into MSG!
Yuck. Beer is way too expensive. $8 for a pint of Guinness?! $6.50 for Brooklyn Lager?! WTF. Was there for a party and have absolutely no desire to go back. Expensive drinks, expensive cheap food... no thank you. When I left, I smelled like french fries and ketchup - and I didn't even have french fries and ketchup! The only redeeming quality about this place was our waitress, who was very good.
Note: I did not choose this place, would never have chosen to come here save for aforementioned party. I wanted to beg and plead to please go somewhere else!
Dude, turn the music down, it's a sports bar, not a discotheque.
The food is good enough to save this place from being a total suck, but the music, seriously.
Don't get the sliders. Do get the artichoke dip.
Stout has captured both the charm and culinary disappointed of Ireland with its equally authentic decor and Irish pub fare. The ambiance and extensive European draft list may be reason to stop in for a drink, but get something to eat before hand. The national touring, Irish folk rock band Scythian claims house band rights here as well.
There is a vicious gang that hangs out at this bar. Watch out for them, especially on Saturdays. Their gang color is orange. They'll often flash their gang signs which you can copy by doing this:
1. Hold up your clenched fist in the air, thumb facing away from you
2. Point up your index and pinky finger skyward
3. Pump up and down vigorously, as if in an angry mob
Watch out for this gang, because they will f***ing kill you.
"you're gonna write a Yelp review of this, aren't you?"
"well, of course. a good one, at that!"
went here last night before seeing almighty Metallica storm into MSG. I was glad to see a place capable of holding many raging metal fans, and willing to ply us with liquor at prices below that of the Garden proper.
for a bar/grill in this area of Manhattan, the prices are actually not bad. $10 for a burger and fries, and they have some interesting burgers on the menu. I had the jerk pork with corn salsa on top - this thing was huge! also decided to be brave and try the curry mayo dipping sauce, which was actually far better than I expected.
we ordered wings earlier on, which were crispy and flavorful, but kinda costly ($9 for 10 wings if I recall).
service was slow for the beers but not for the food. I concede that the place was crowded, but...doesn't it take less time to prepare a beer than a plate of food?
they have a large selection of beers, which is, of course, never a bad thing. Belhaven Scottish ale? check.
before a concert, it seems they will play music from that artist (or at least in the basement where we were). awesome sauce!
would definitely go back, although I'm not in that area often.
also, major props for the sign outside which read: WE'VE GOT FUEL, WE'VE GOT FIRE, WE'VE GOT ALL THAT YOU DESIRE! \m/
Me = newly minted Texas football fan. The food isn't anything special, and neither are the beers, but it's a fun atmosphere and it's not too divey - the bartenders and waitresses are great, and sometimes they have cool Irish bands that are loud (but what did you expect, really?). If you have to get food though - the fries and artichoke dip are your best bets.
I came before the Britney concert at MSG, so really, i could have been standing on a street corner drinking water and would have been thrilled. But there were lots of people in here pre-concert and they even had brit brit videos on the tv screens. beer was good, bar food was good too. I would go back if i was in the hood and wanted a drink.
Popular place - can be difficult to find a table but once you do you'll want to stay all night. Loved the Apricot Wheat beer and was pleasantly surprised that they had a pumpkin ale on tap (Brooklyn I believe) which had just the right amount of spice. Also show Texas games and I hear it's a good place for TX fans!
I think my ears finally stopped bleeding.
With the exception of the group of people I went with, the people who come here to karaoke are awful. I mean really bad. Sloppy drunken mess bad! Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" is a kind of a predictable song to karaoke to, but it's a crowd pleaser. Uh not the way this one couple sang it last night. I was counting down the seconds until they were done. What girl shakes her booty on stage to Journey?! They didn't even know the words to this song!
If you've worked or ever been to midtown, you've probably stopped by Stout, a big Irish sports bar on 33rd street. I avoided the after-work crowd and stopped in for lunch. While the burgers looked big and tasty, I went with the Reuben Pizza, a thin crust pizza with small cubes of pastrami, french dressing and cole slaw. It truly wasn't bad but would have been better as an appetizer as I was still hungry after. The waitress made a small mistake with my order and volunteered to correct it immediately, but it was insignificant so I passed.
A fine spot to go if you're looking for burgers and large screen TVs but given my druthers, not the kind of place I would chose to revisit. A-Ok, 3 stars.
I was faced with a number of limiting circumstances which made this the perfect place to eat:
1) I was meeting with my cousin from Korea who was on a group tour and got dropped off in Koreatown.
2) She and her husband didn't want to eat Korean food because they'd been eating Korean food for the whole time they've been in America (their tour is filled with older Korean people who refuse to eat anything other than Korean food).
3) We didn't have a lot of time before they had to go to the airport.
So we were stuck in Herald Square, but could not eat Korean food. Stout NYC seemed like one of our best options.
They have a pretty good selection of beers on tap--while they feature the stouts, they have a good variety of other types of beers on tap. I had a Hoeegarden because, as a rule, I don't drink stouts during the summer.
For food, I had the scallion and black bean turkey burger. I liked the fact that they attempt some degree of creativity in their burgers. Their burgers were pretty reasonably priced. They also offer about a dozen dipping sauces for their fries, which is a nice touch.
The place is huge and pretty clean. I don't understand how anyone can describe this place as anything remotely close to "divey". I would be very comfortable taking women here (unlike some of the *really* "divey" bars in NYC).
Stout has one of the largest beer menu's I've seen in the world. I also like the food here, the hamburgers, and other assorted greasy American appetizer finger food is fantastic. It gets loud in here but that's expected at Irish American Sports Pubs, where day time cubicle workers have pints of beer and get rowdy, expressing their masculinity watching sports. Creepy story happened when I was in the bathroom downstairs, some guy saw me get into a stall, and ask me if I needed any help, WTF?!?!?! I don't know if I could ever come back, traumatizing.
There's something about Stout that turns me off.
Perhaps it's because it seems like a cookie-cutter sports bar, full of frat boys and the bridge-and-tunnel crowd.
And yet, the location -- a block away from MSG in the heart of midtown -- keeps luring me back. (I must admit the fat burgers aren't shabby either).
I've had some good times at Stout: Christmas parties and drinks with old friends. Stupid dancing downstairs. Endless bottles of Duvel - on my bosses' dollar.
Stout, you've got a lame name and a cheesy clientele. But what can I say? I'm a fan.
This place is massive
and it is an okay bar.
They have darts downstairs.
I can't find a place to go eat before a show at MSG that isn't AS LOUD as the concert I am about to see. What if you want to have some conversation over drinks or dinner beforehand? Well, the only thing good about this place was that it was a mob scene before the Springsteen concert BUT they did honor my reservation and sat us right away. People were getting turned away with 2 hour waits for a table without a reservation. The place was SO packed, it was really unbearable to look at! Luckily we were brought upstairs to where just the dining was. As for the food, my friend liked his guacamole burger. My chicken salad was average. Service was ok. It was just so loud, it was so hard to catch up with my friend. I would love to find a place in that area that is just a normal restaurant on a concert night. I mean, why blast music when people are about to go get their eardrums blown out anyway? Don't get it. I never understood this, even when I was in my 20s.
My second time at Stout, I went for a Texas football game- Big 12 rivals beware, everyone here is a Longhorns fan. It was mighty crowded in the upstairs section, but there was a decent amount of room at the bar downstairs. Good selection of draft beers, and I shared the sliders and sweet potato fries, which were AWESOME. Not too greasy, just the right amount of cinnamon sugary deliciousness. And they have dart boards! I will be returning soon, no doubt.
came on a saturday, this place is huge.
met a russian.
danced with white people who had no rhythm but they really tried.
had sliders and chicken fingers they were decent.
insulted a meathead, which was satifying.
had a good time.
Straight sports bar....
I think not.... the music selections makes me question about this place, they were one track away from playing its raining men.
They apparently only play the basketball games on the TV. My friend was watching a baseball game on one of the TV, then they just started to play sin city... I was like OK WTF. The place is loud and dark. I felt like i was in the AandF store on 5th ave. The service can be better the waiters was lets say less then attentive and attractive.
The only good thing that this place had going for this place was the beer selection. So that is why i gave this place a +1 star.
The stairs to go down stairs, you have to be not drunk and have good balance if you dont have that you will end up falling down the stairs.
Well if you get drunk the good thing is that the train station is right there, out the door and you leave.
To my fellow Yelpers who ranked this less than five stars --- SHAME ON YOU!
Second item on the agenda - ELENA the server is the best!
If you are looking for a little IRISH fun with access to sports TV, great food, friendly people and VERY VERY attentive service this is your place (read my other reviews I am big on service).
The pricing was also OUTSTANDING and the Guinness flowed like water in the summer on the Nile (for those of you who do not know your history that is a GOOD THING).
The food was well portioned and the Guinness had very little head to it (a personal issue for me).
I recommend it hands down!
I don't have much to say about Stout except that they have awful service. We tried so many times (in vain) to get our server's attention. We ended up pulling one of the hostesses (who ignored our first attempt because she thought we were waving to friends across the bar) to grab our server. Ridiculous. We came by after a Knicks game and it wasn't even packed! Whatevs.
It's a HUGE space though, so that's good. There's extra area upstairs AND downstairs and they have a shitload of beers. But it attracts certain clientele--expect rowdy, frat-like people. WTF was I doing here.
I went here last week with a "date" before a Knicks game. I put the word "date" in quotations because any man who is taking my ass to a sporting event in the hopes of getting into my panties is obviously not manfriend material. But I digress...
Came here last week around 6. The downstairs was PACKED with suits drowning their workday sorrows in shots of whiskey and beer and watching whatever was playing on one of the many big screen TV's.
Thankfully we were seated in the quieter (but not quiet) upstairs area. I was starving and in the mood for red meat (I wouldn't be getting any from my date, after all) so I ordered a cheeseburger with grilled onions and fries. On any regular date, I'd eat like a baby bird, but since I had noone to impress or look cute for, you better believe I housed that burger. It was big and sloppy and delicious and I loved it. I'm not a big red meat person, but I'd eat their burgers everyday. The fries came with a dipping sauce a la Pomme Frites. I got the chipolte honey mustard one and I've come to the conclusion that I want to be smothered in that mess when I die. It was delicious to the nth degree.
Overall, the place was good. If I was in the area again, I'd come back. Minus stars for the scary after work crowd and awkward company. Plus many stars for the dipping sauce.
If only my date had been covered in that honey mustard concoction... something tells me that EVERYONE at MSG would've been watching a different kind of ball bounce.
Just sayin.
Close by Penn Station, and they've got a ton of different (you guessed it) stouts on tap. We walked in and were seated right away at a bar table.
We ordered some beers and grub, (yay for Yuengling on tap!). The sweet potato fries are heavenly! (I stole some from my friend). The pretzel I got was pretty good.
My only complaint is that we got a litle wind-blasted where we were seated when the door opened.
This a good place for after-work drinks or bar food. They have a good selection of beers. The downstairs is interesting since you feel like you're in some sort of underground raiload tunnel. It's a good place to go to if you're going to an event at MSG and want to grab some drinks.
The food was ok, beer selection pretty awesome... But what's up with the service? We got handed off to *4* different waiters in the ~90 minutes we were there. First round of drinks arrived 20+ minutes after we ordered, food took 45 minutes.
It's funny how I found out about this place. Stout is featured on the Bose website for the work Bose sound engineers did for the restaurant. (I was looking at this a few weeks ago while researching things needed for a restaurant of my own to open a little while down the road.) On my recent trip to NYC, while walking around and looking for lunch, we just so happened upon Stout.
The interior is typical Irish Pub-ish and nothing special, but it gets the job done. As mentioned above, I did notice the quality of the music playing. Popular radio music with a presence, but not obtrusive. Two of us had no trouble getting a table without a reservation and the place was not crowded or loud at noon on a Wednesday.
Our server's name was Stephanie and she was on top of her game. Quick, friendly service and had a knowledge of the menu and NYC. Great at mingling with her guests.
If you're looking for Irish/Pub/'drinking' food (muchies), the menu and food are great. I appreciate how the menu is broken up into "burgers" and "not burgers." However, we both ordered one of the specials. The food was simple, fresh, and tasty with a nice blend of tradition seasoned with outside-the-box inspiration. The menu is complemented by a great selection of beers, many of which I have had previously, but was able to taste some I haven't had before.
I would recommend to my friends as a starting place before a night on the town, dinner, and especially lunch.
The frattiest frat bar that ever did frat. Covered from head to toe with frat guys wearing the same shirt (white striped button-down or team-shirt), deafening music, and a constantly packed bar. The selection of food and drink is actually quite good, and if you really want the experience of what it's like to not hear anything and have to push past everybody, it's the place for you.
The best and worst parts were the food. The chicken strips and avocado-ranch dip, as well as the home-made fries, were amazing and filling. Relatively cheap, too.
The problem was that the waitresses were slow - absolutely, unforgivably slow, with constant 15-30 minute waits between the simplest drinks orders. One time the waitress actually returned to us after 20 minutes and said "uhhhhh did you guys order food?" and revealed she forgot to put in the order.
I'm sure people are all going to say "YO BRO IT'S A SPORTS BAR BRO WHAT YOU TALKIN' ABOUT BRO" but there's a way to make a sports bar that doesn't leave you with tinnitus and constantly waiting for some kind of service.
The place was pretty crowded after work, but their oatmeal stout made the wait worth it. Food was basic and decent. Service was good.
Saturday night karaoke is nuts! You're shoulder to shoulder with people dancing, stage lights flashing different colors over your head, someone on the stage rocking out to some classic rock song. I don't think it gets much better.
Go downstairs and check it out.
Great karaoke, bands, people and food.
Ugh *shakes fist in the air*. Stout sucks.
First of all, anyone who voluntarily chooses to go out in the Herald Square area is lame. My night at Stout certainly puts me in that category. Never again.
$7 for a Bud Light in one of those stupid, green bottles for St. Patrick's Day. A Pilsner was cheaper. So lame. Oh, these Bud Lights must have a twist-off top. NOPE. The bartender didn't even pop our tops off. Well, good luck trying to get back to the bar and point out his error. The only, ONLY redeeming quality of Stout was our adorable waitress who was cool as hell. Won't go back here though.
Great place and hugeeee. A million screens all over. Loud music! A lot of office crowd. Service was decent. The burgers are huge and fries are yummy. I have tried the veggie burger and the grilled chicken sandwich and both were very good. They have like a ton of beers. A really nice place to just hang out! Its very close to the PATH...so when it gets too late or we are in the city too early before an event, this is the place to go.
For the location, in the wasteland of penn station and it's good...and you can see penn station from the restaurant so it's close too.
I have burgers and chicken sandwhich both good, with plenty of fries. TVs to watch the game. Decent beers on tap.
I think this is a good place.
Came to catch a playoff game.I don't like this area at all but was meeting a friend taking the 7 train in so i compromised. Suprisingly, i really liked this bar. Cleaner than ur regular divey sports bar (nevada smiths, bar none) but not all modern looking (the hill, blue seats, tonic east). So this is kinda close to the perfect sports bar. The best part for me was the giant ass screen in the middle of the bar. I have bad vision so this was the first time i didn't have to keep asking what the score was. there was also a DJ up top who played some good (not great) songs. TV screens all over, friendy efficient service (despite the place being very busy), and a good crowd that was into the game. Extensive beer list and tasty oysters. Regular frat boy crowd. My friend was the only guy wearing a regular t-shirt. All other tools were wearing a button down, polo shirt, or an extra smedium tee.
I've been here several times for several reasons including, but not limited to: lunches, company holiday parties, first date "drinks and see where this goes", catching up with friends, watching the games. It's a huge place with tons of screens, so it's perfect for football season - and I suppose any other sport but I don't care about any of those really. Happy hours are always packed with suits, so I usually try to avoid those high-traffic times.
The food is actually pretty decent, and they have a nice selection of draughts. I wouldn't say I'd recommend this for anything special, but I'm sure I'll end up there every few weeks because ultimately a bar's a bar.
Decent bar downtown which featured, yep, you guessed it, good stouts. I had some of the Goose Island stout, a Young's Double Chocolate stout, and a Sam Smith stout, along with Hefeweizen. My friends ordered mini burgers and chicken fingers, which were ok. Typical bar food quality.
I was shocked that this place was not as crowded as I heard it would be when I had arrived. It was a bit difficult to grab a seat, even at the bar, but standing and talking to everyone while drinking was good enough.
This place is awesome!
I went before a Dave Matthews Concert and it was so much fun! They played the Central Park DVD on all the screens and the music was set high. It was the perfect atmosphere. The design inside was very cool, like a industrial seaside pier feel. Tons of beer on tap and the food looked really good! Great place to go pre concert or anytime!
First off, I went here because of its location to Penn to meet up for a decent happy hour with an old friend. One snag, they don't actually have any Happy Hour pricing. Consequently we weren't so happy.
No worries we just ordered and drank anyway. My friend ordered the calamari and it was COMPLETELY TASTELESS. I have never in my life had calamari that tasted like nothing...but this tasted like nothing. Rice cakes have more flavor.
I ordered the crab burger which was ok. Not great but not bad. The wait staff was great however and they are the only reason for the two stars. The waitress let my friend and I sit at a table for hours while we gabbed and drank, they even changed shifts we were there so long.
Oh and the bathroom was an adventure...they have some of the steepest stairs I've encountered. While intoxicated this is no easy feat and judging by the woman hysterically crying, while holding a beer in the ladies room saying "the bitch he slept with looks like a transvesite!" a lot of people down there were intoxicated.
