I had flown into DC for a conference. My (almost 30yo) boy picked me up at DCA and, noting that I hadn't eaten, took me to Stoney near his place. We managed to get a 2-top i the window right away which was perfect for watching the Friday night scene off 14th street. I had a great burger with perfect fries and a green salad. Perfect bar food and good local beer choices. By the time we left (several pints later) the place was jammed.
No complaints, I'm a fan. -
Review from Sean B.
I had been meaning to go here for months due to all the hype I had heard about the burger. Finally made it here last night. One word for you: disappointed. The burger was ok. I asked for medium rare and it was almost well done. There is more pink to be seen at a Raiders game than in my burger last night. Ketchup also came on it. I personally don't mind ketchup, but my two companions hate the stuff and were relieved they didn't order the Stoney Burger for that reason alone.
The toppings on the Stoney Burger also rather meager: just a tomato and pickles. If there was lettuce, it was minimal. Now I understand I got the cheapest burger, and had I gone slightly more upscale, I might have been more satisfied, but like I said, my meat was overcooked and its quality really didn't seem that fantastic.
All that being said, the fries were done well: light and crispy. The beer selection was also good, although I'd advise passing on the Stoney's Amber (tasteless).
Even though I wasn't blown away by the burger, I would like to go back because Stoney's does have good beers, the servers are friendly, and I am willing to give their burgers another try... -

Food was good. I tried the wedding soup ($3.50) and the texas (~$10) burger. Soup was well seasoned. Burger was excellent. It was huge. You can tell it's hand made patties grilled to order. The bbq sauce and the slaw was a tasty contrast. They even used the good pickles :). The kitchen staff that brought us our food was very nice and prompt when we requested additional condiments. We ended up waiting extra time for our burgers, but they apologized. The fries were fresh, crisp, and good.
Service by our waitress was terrible. We had a large group. We waited for a long time for our water even after mentioning it the 1st time. Took forever to get our check and to get our payment. Ended tacking an automatic 18% gratuity which was an insult. Several people in our party were servers at other restaurants and were equality annoyed with the service and the automatic gratuity. -

My favorite neighborhood spot. Great low-key, fun vibe, fun place to hang out any time. Their grilled cheese is great too. The menu is nothing fancy, but all your favorite bar food staples - burgers, grilled cheese, lots of fried food, good local beer options.

Washington D.C., DC
The fall had arrived, and I was deep in the midst of my anti-honeymoon with DC.
Having moved here just a couple months before, I had become bitterly disenchanted with the city's image-obsessed, overpriced, crime-ridden bullshit. People had raved to me about the food scene in DC, but everything I had encountered at that point had served bland, overpriced food in an atmosphere that tried desperately to come off as a "high-end lounge." Of course, there are some truly excellent restaurants in Washington, but I had found most of them to be out of my price range. I'm usually a casual diner, and had found nothing to suit my taste and wallet.
And so, wandering around Logan Circle one evening with my girlfriend, I was prepared for more disappointment. The sun was setting depressingly early. We were grumpy and hungry. It was starting to look like we would end up at another mediocre spot out of necessity.
Then, from down the block, we spotted a beacon of hope: An illuminated sign featuring a contented cartoon gentleman with a beer in one hand and a pizza in the other. Bingo. This was the sort of thing that we had been looking for.
Inside, we found exactly what had eluded us for so long in this city: Bar food. Not Church-Key-style expensive, ironic bar food like chicken nuggets fried in duck fat or homemade tater tots, but real bar food. Mac and cheese. Pizza. Burgers. Fish and chips. Hell, I think they even have meat loaf.
We enjoyed our meal there that night and have been back several times. The BLT is one of the best I've ever had - loaded with a mound of bacon that is both thick and crispy at the same time. The fries are just okay, but they're perfectly adequate. The pizza is also good, as is the BBQ.
And they have pitchers. At reasonable prices. Unheard of.
All in all, Stoney's is a solid joint that does exactly what it tries to do. It's an unpretentious place to grab some beer and some down-home food. The owner checked up on everything one time I was there, and he was gracious in his offer to substitute sides, mention things that weren't on the menu, etc.
I'll continue to go back as long as I'm in DC. -

Admittedly, I did not take the advice of my fellow Yelpsters and get a burger. However, I was feeling the need to eat a little healthier and decided on a chicken breast sandwich. In two words, completely forgettable. The sandwich was extremely generic, slightly under-cooked and came with cold fries (which helped with the eating healthier motif, as they were inedible). The only redeeming part of my meal was the stiff drink and the ability to watch my favorite college football team.
As for my dining partner, she took the recommendation of getting the Grilled Cheese with bacon and tomato. According to her, it was good, but needed to come with a pitcher of water to help with the sodium rush. Her fries were also cold.
I did see several burgers come out while we were there. They looked really good, but that could have been my jealous stomach wanting something more/better than what I ordered.
Might try again... -

My husband and I went to Soney's yesterday.
We both had a texas burger and they were just SO HUGE and GOOD. The BBQ and Col slw sauce were working so great together.

They serve the best grilled cheese ever. If you feel like being a fatass, order it and you won't regret it.
This place is cheap, has a wide array of beers and the waitstaff is attentive and friendly. The place sticks out a bit on P Street because it has a dive bar feel without actually being a dive bar.
I've never been to the upstairs part of this place, and I haven't even entertained the idea, because downstairs has a better vibe and feels like a hometown bar. -

Its Sunday, late night, gotta catch the last Metro train, hungry, where to go for take out? Did a yelp search and found Stoney's. I am so happy I did. The grilled cheese was soooooo good. I am looking at the reviews on the side panel as I am writing this and they ALL mention how good the grilled cheese is. I had no idea what they had when I came here. I was just hungry. It looks like I ordered the right item. Also, the fries arent too shabby either.
As I was waiting for my food I realized I miscalculated the time of the last train. Since it looked like I would be taking a taxi home I figured I would hang out for awhile and sat at the bar to eat my food and had a couple of beers. Plus they had Shark Week on the TV. How awesome is that! The bar tender Phil was super down to earth and overall a nice guy. Were both in grad school, fairly new to DC and he's been all over the world so we had alot to chat about. A very cool guy. The overall vibe of the bar was cool too. No attitudes, no pretentious folk, and not overrun with hipsters. Just a good variety of "normal" chill people hanging out. If I lived in the area this would definitely be my go to chill spot. -
Review from Lusi F.
my friend raved about their grilled cheeses, so for her birthday we came here. It was okay, but SUPER greasy. After eating half a sandwich I felt like I was going to have a heart attack (I typically try to eat healthier so it was like a shock to my system)
other than that, seems like a chill bar/happy hour place. -

I was visiting DC for a few days and was staying at the Hotel Helix for a few days, so we went to Stoney's because it was close and convenient.
Food:
1) Spinach Dip - Pretty good! I liked how it's served with warm bread as opposed to chips. Good food to munch on while having a few drinks
Drinks
Nice selection of beers on draft and they make pretty good shooters.
Service:
Can be a little spotty. They forgot to put in our ONE food order and it took them forever to bring us waters and our beers. They did apologize, but they didn't offer anything else.. fail... -

I'm not going to lie, when I don't have dinner plans and don't feel like cooking Stoney's is my go-to place. They have friendly service, decent prices and a good atmosphere. Sure, finding healthier options on the menu can be a challenge, but let's be honest, you wanted a greasy burger anyway.

St. Patrick's Day 2011: I Hate Loud Drunks edition.
I wanted a beer, I needed a beer, but I was in no mood to battle green-clad, green-beered twenty-somethings at an "Irish pub." When my friend suggested Logan Circle, I figured Stoney's would be fun without being obnoxious or overwhelming.
I was right.
Decent, well-priced bar food (with options for Vegetarian Friend) with a sizable tap ($5.50 pints). Beer (the McStoney's) drinkable and refreshing. Dark, but not stout-y. Quite good in terms of randomly choosing house ales from a tap. Vegetarian Friend had an IPA and commented it was a bit hoppy (even for an IPA), but she did order two, so...
Server was clad in blinky shamrocks, but was responsive and cordial even though he was juggling quite a few tables, indoors and outdoors.
Bar was full, but not packed, and it seemed like a great place to linger for a drink or four after work.
I am wholly satisfied with my St. Patrick's Day celebration. -

It was 8 p.m. on a Friday night and we were looking for a place we could sit down, hear ourselves think, and grab a drink... in Logan Circle. This seemed so implausible that we almost gave up trying, until somebody reminded us of Stoney's.
Yes, it's a dive, but it was the perfect dive: low key, quiet, and the upstairs bar was half-empty-- just what we were looking for. Honestly, I'm not sure how it manages to pull it off, but it does, and I am extremely grateful. -

This is really just for the 'grill' portion of the name, although I'm sure the bar is pretty kick-ass too. Stoney's is a charming neighborhood pub serving people of all types. The portions here are pretty damn big and they don't break the bank. Our waiter was very friendly too, which I didn't totally expect.
I ordered the super grilled cheese sandwich. That 'super' is no joke. It's two big slices of bread all buttered up with a lot of cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion and shoestring fries. It's really big, and it tasted SO good. The butter is what makes it, I think, but the thick-cut crispy bacon doesn't hurt either.
I also got a taste of the chicken caesar (very big salad) and the mac 'n' cheese. The mac 'n' cheese was pretty good but not the best I've had. Still, it's a big serving and it's good. I'm impressed, and I'd love to come back. -

I guess Stoney's is what you get for being too impatient to wait for a table at the Commisary or Logan Tavern for Sunday brunch. We had a small dog, so had to eat outside and we were hungry! My bf said to me, "It's a bar but it's not like it's going to be much different than the other two places." In hindsight, we should've just bought eggs at Whole Foods across the street and gone home for breakfast.
We ordered the meditteranean omelet and breakfast club with a bloody mary and coffee. Everything was brought out at the same time by a food runner and we didn't see our waiter (code name: Jolm) again until we were half finished, and at that time he cleared the table next to us without acknowledging our presence. I'm not sure if the vodka was THAT cheap, the bartender was THAT bad or the drink just sat at the bar THAT long before it was brought out, but I couldn't drink the Bloody Mary so I sent it back. For the record, this is probably the 2nd time in my life I've sent back a drink; I'm not a diva. When I did, the waiter literally just gave me a dirty look. He didn't apologize or offer to bring me something else and he didn't take it off the check. JUST the dirty look? thanks.
I'm not going to act like a food snob, because I'm from Missouri and I was raised by a dad who loves eating in truck stops and buffet restaurants. So thankfully, I was prepared for our meals. The fries and bacon had obviously been precooked and were waiting around the kitchen for someone to come break them out. The omelet was huge, but filled with canned tomatoes, canned spinach and feta cheese crumbles that surely come in a huge bucket with plenty of preservatives to keep them around for awhile. The toast was the highlight; really good bread!
I ran into our waiter as I was going in to request the check (we didn't see him again after the dirty look) and I said, "I thought you might be busy inside" when he dropped it off. [This implies that we are ready to leave.] After a few minutes more of sitting in direct sunlight, I went in to pay at the bar and realized the place was empty aside from 3 bar patrons and our waiter was nowhere in sight.
The place may be fun for a young, rowdy crowd to get drunk food or nurse a hangover but I prefer Manny & Olga's jumbo slice for that. -

I like this place. Good selection of beers and the best place my neighborhood to get pub food - especially love the grilled cheese.
I like sit in the high tables near front windows or if lucky get one of the 4 sidewalk tables. Jason is a great waiter.Listed in: My neighborhood

Stoneys is a fantastic DC bar. I've visited twice, and each time ordered the wings. They are the most delicious wings that I've ever had in my entire life. They don't give you the option of mild or hot or any other flavor, like at other restaurants. They're just...wings. They definitely are hot, though, and are served with bleu cheese, so if you want ranch, you have to ask. I've told many people to go, just for the wings. I've also had the Super Grilled Cheese, which has not only a plentiful amount of cheese, but also bacon, tomato, and onion on it. Absolutely delicious.
Random note regarding the bar: They don't have Miller Lite? -

NEVER AGAIN! Literally the worst customer service I have ever experienced and I have a very high tolerance and forgiving attitude (former waiter, delivery boy, dish washer, and I still work in customer service).
I could name names but I think an honest Yelp would be more helpful. If I behaved the way this guy behaved while I was at work, I assure you I would be fired and my professionnal reputation would be in jeopardy.
My boyfriend and I have always been regulars at Stoney's. We appreciate the laid back atmosphere of this place, in sea of restaurants that, in my humble opinion, are over hyped.
Last Sunday we brought another couple there. They were visiting from outside the area and we wanted to get a low-key and quick brunch. From the moment we sat our selves down, our waiter was not only rude and unprofessional but literally AGGRESSIVE. He greeted our group by slamming glasses of water upon the table without even a hello. A less forgiving group of people would probably have got up and left right after that. He then chastised us for requesting an additional water since he only hurled 3 glasses at us, when we had a party of 4. After we fearfully ordered, he literally ripped the menus out of our hands and violently placed them back in the caddy on the table. The food did come out on time and was acceptable, but at that point the damage was already done. Never in my life has waiter made me feel more uncomfortable and quick frankly, afraid. This man had the look and feel of someone who was ready to get into a physical altercation at any moment.
Let me reiterate NEVER AGAIN will we patronize this tavern. This is an unfortunate fact because we really liked this place and we live around the corner. This review, and our subsequent boycott, is not out of spite, but out of genuine disgust and a tinge of fear. -

Lunches, happy hours, Christmas parties, I've been here for it all.
Stoney's has a little dive bar feel, but it's new(ish) and without any dark corners or holes in wall. Decent pub food, nice beer selection. The grilled cheeses here are huge....and the ham & cheese appears underrated from past reviews. My personal favorite....the meatloaf sandwich. Nice and dense to sop up the beer, but more manageable than their burgers (which is not to knock them, they're great in their own right).
If it's at all possible, I'd recommend to sit at the bar or the tables around the bar. The tables in the back seem kinda crammed, and while the service is the same....the view is better up front. -

Wandered into this place around noon to grab brunch on a whim. Sat at the bar with the very absent bartender; he was at the bar, just not paying attention to the bar patrons. The place got packed rather quickly (by 12:30 pm, there were few tables left).
Beer selection was surprisingly ok, based on the small number of taps, but they do have the macros, too, so this is not a destination bar. I enjoyed a Bells Porter and my husband had a Breckenridge IPA.
I ordered the Greek omelet (spinach, feta, tomatoes). I think they used canned tomatoes, since my plate was had a decent amount of liquid below the omelet. The potatoes are cooked in peppers and onions, and they helped sop up the tomato juice after I was done my omelet. The husband ordered the Pastrami Delight. He loved it; it's the kind of sandwich you order in a bar like Stoney's. It had great flavor.
FYI: Menu states clearly: NO SUBSTITUTIONS.
We got the check rather quickly and had to wait about 10 minutes before the bartender even looked our way to take our credit card. The place is a good greasy spoon/dive bar.
Bonus: It was nice to see one of the guys in the kitchen with a Phillies hat on. -
Review from Justin C.
The Yelp event after-party locations are usually where the pretend drinking ends and the real drinking begins, and we get to gorge ourselves on some more satisfying food than what's offered for free by whatever bar happens to be hosting us. This time around, after the Trailer Park (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) event at Townhouse Tavern, a group of us decided to head over to Stoney's just a couple blocks over to continue the festivities. We had heard many great things about a legendary grilled cheese, one of life's great drunken food pleasures, so we were all quite enticed.
As I noted pretty recently in another review, hype in DC is something that more often than not is not lived up to, and unfortunately in the case of this grilled cheese they fell miserably short of the promises made. Without ever looking at the menu I ordered the supreme (or whatever they called it) version of the sandwich, which additionally comes with raw onion, tomato, and bacon. Had I actually seen it on the menu I would have at least known to order it without the raw onion, as that's one of my least favorite ingredients. I loved them cooked, but raw they overpower virtually everything, and that was definitely the case here. Also on my least-favorite list about this sandwich was the bacon that resembled cow more than pig, due to the leathery texture that had zero crunch whatsoever. The fact that there didn't even seem to be that much cheese in the sandwich didn't really redeem them very much either. Maybe I'm just expecting too much from this, based on the hype? I can only imagine how disappointed I would have been had I not already had a dozen drinks and simply needed to load up on carbs and grease. Nick ordered the plain grilled cheese, which seemed to have significantly more of the actual cheese, and bread which was much less burnt than mine, so there may be a sliver of hope.
There were fries on the side too, but they were pretty bland and somewhat stale, not much of a significant addition. That last bit sort of sums up everything I experienced here, including the uninspired and generic draft selection, and a bartender who seemed more annoyed to have to serve us than happy to have customers. There was a cool waitress who came by towards the end and chatted with us all about online dating services, initiating some interesting stories and arguments after, but when the highlight of a business for the evening is someone you interact with for roughly 60 seconds it doesn't really encourage me to return, even if it is just right around the corner from where I live.Listed in: Oh No They Didn't!, Living in Logan

3.5 stars sounds about right.
I would say this is a good place to end your night. It's really nothing special but it is a good place to just chill after a night of boozing. The grilled cheese is pretty tasty, although I would say it's more of a full on sandwich than a grilled cheese (comes with bacon, tomato, onion), not that there's anything wrong with that.
They also have a pretty solid beer selection. Major plus points for having Long Trail Ale, minus points for replacing Bell's Oberon with a porter. That made me kind of sad. Also, avoid their Stoney's Amber Ale. I love amber ales but this just didn't really have much taste. -

Not impressed. The only reason I even went up to 3 stars is for the somewhat respectable beer selection.
Slowest service ever, and no decent place to wait while the waiters sluggishly move around, doing basically anything but actually waiting on the tables. Really great comfort food (helloooooo mac n cheese), and the burgers looked amazing, but no amount of fat and grease makes up for the crap service. -

Huge fans of Stoney's here.
We love it. The food, the atmosphere, the beer, the prices.
This place rocks.
But most importantly, we love their burgers.
The One Eye is one of the best we've had in the D.C. area.
It's simple: an egg and burger on a bun. Oh, and you gotta add bacon to the mix. It'll set you back three bones, but it's worth it.
If you've never had a fried egg on a burger, you need to do so immediately. You'll find it hard to pass it up in the future.

Came here on a Sunday night for an IPA draft and wings. The IPA was decent. The wing sauce was weak, and the wings were definitely frozen before fried. They came out chewy.
Whoever served us needs to loose the fraternity cool-guy schtick. We asked about one of the sandwiches, he said, "it's my favorite thing on the menu." We asked about the buffalo wings, he said, "it's my second favorite thing on the menu." What a coincidence! As we got ready to leave, I asked for a to-go container for my food. His awesome reply: "how big are your pockets?" Good one - the jokes on me I guess!
I'm guessing that there are other places in the District of Columbia where I don't have to stuff my pockets with Freezer Friendly wings. -

Love this place! I work right around the corner and its great to go to after work for a drink or quick dinner. Good space, good from groups or just a few people. They have a different beer selection, not your typical Bud, Bud light, Miller light.....the stoney amber is a good pick. If your looking for something good to eat, you can't go wrong with their fish n chips.

It's refreshing to see a restaurant that serves just plain old buffalo wings - just buffalo wings, no mild/honey/hot/atomic/XXX or boneless varieties. And they're good wings, too, flavorful and spicy, but not so spicy that you taste buds are numbed. The reuben is pretty good, as are the cheesesteak and the burgers. The fries are great - again, they're your standard french fries, but they're just crispy enough and just the right cut.
It would be better if they had a better craft beer selection, but as long as they keep Founders Centennial IPA and Kona Fire Rock Pale Ale on tap, I'll be satisfied.
All in all, a great neighborhood place, which was part of the neighborhood long before Logan Circle became what it is today. -

3.5 stars.
Came back here a few weeks ago after a long time as a friend was craving a burger, and, I gotta say, my burger wasn't as memorable this time around. I do like the egg on the burger concoction though, and the fact that our friendly waiter immediately suggested a hot toddy for my sick self.
We ate here because it was the most affordable place to get a decent burger in Logan circle. It is a bar, gets crowded, has a decent number of tables, no frills food, some good beers, and competent service. It's the place you can always sort of count on when you need a quick bite and just want to sit down and catch up with friends. -

I had the super grilled cheese, which has been the subject of much hyperbole. I'm all for a great sandwich, but what usually makes them great are the fact that I wouldn't be able to recreate one at home.
What makes the super grilled cheese, er, super is the addition of bacon, tomato and onions. All great compliments to the sandwich, but I would have enjoyed it more if my bread wasn't super crispy. All minor complaints, here.
Service was okay, but it took way too long to close out. The downstairs room near the bar was maybe 3/4 full. It shouldn't have taken more than 10 minutes for it to happen given our proximity to the register. Regardless, I would come back and the selection of beers is intriguing though I went there to eat instead of drink.
Overall, I would definitely recommend the place. -

I went here because its near my place, but unfortunately had a bad experience. The pizza I had was undercooked and the bartender took awhile to get to me (it was not busy at the time!).

If you love comfort food, Stoney's is the place for you! Their sandwiches are delicious. Their grilled cheese sandwiches are by far the best in the city. Served with really crispy fries and on buttered toast, these sandwiches ooze with cheese. I'm a fan of the regular grilled cheese and my boyfriend loves the Super grilled cheese, with bacon, tomato, and onions added.
They also have a great selection of draft beers. Nothing like a grilled cheese and a Hoegaarden to wash it down :)

Actually I have been a fan of Stoney's since it was located at the original location on L St. near 13th St. NW. One Eye Burger used to be my favorite. But most recently, I enjoyed Texas Burger a lot, with sauteed onion, bacon and cheddar cheese. Stoney's is, to me, not as good as Ray's Hell Burger, but it is the best burger place closest to where I work. Looks like they have a lounge upstairs now. (Stoney's Lounge) Have you tried the lounge, Amanda? You are so lucky to have Stoney's in your backyard!

I wrote my last review in 2007 when I had been there I think twice. Since then, I've gone countless times and usually late at night around 12-2am. One time, there was a giant cockroach flying around the bar. Another time, the bartender called some people at the bar "bitches" out loud. And EVERY TIME - that same bartender was SLOW. Even more amazing? This guy gets frazzled by two people ordering drinks at the same time. I've seen him turn red and freak out with 3 people at the bar! I've never seen a worse bartender in my life. I've also had the worst waitresses there. I tried to love it because it was incredibly convenient to my work for a long time, but I decided to stop spending my money there.
