Category: Hardware Stores [Edit]
Neighborhood: WallingfordLove this place. I was recently completing a big construction project and I swear I was there every 2 days. They always had what I needed, and the staff was always edgy, esoteric, and friendly.

I had to fix up a couple of things around my apartment today. I headed to Stone Way Hardware because I often don't get the kind of service at Fred Meyer that is sometimes helpful when undertaking an unfamiliar task. In this case it was purchasing and installing a light switch, and a toilet tank flapper. The staff was friendly, helpful and efficient. The prices are reasonable as well. Although I electrocuted myself a couple of times everything went off without a hitch.

I was driving around today thinking to myself, "I really need some wire. I can't believe I ran out of wire the other night. Damn it. I want some wire now, like right now." I looked up and saw "Stoneway Hardware & Supply" and got super excited. I KNEW I could probably get some wire there.
Well, let me tell you...I got me some wire. Oh yeah, I got some real good wire here. And, I seen they got lots of other right practical items for sale as well I reckoned. I could damn near get lost in the "fasteners" aisle alone! Whew!
I stepped back a little and had me a look around, surveyed the layout. Real nice. Real nice indeed. Lots of things. Lots of room to look at the things. Real easy going peoples. "I like it here" I said to myself. Not out loud mind you, but in my head where nobody can suspect.
Okay, I'm going to get a drink of cool water now, ya hear? Bye now.

A great little local hardware store run by people who actually know how to fix things. That's the real difference between these little places and the big stores; they've actually used the tools and have a clue rather than just speculating about what might work.
If you have a small job to do and don't need build half of a house, this should be your first stop.

Stone Way Hardware is my favorite neighborhood hardware store. They are a bigger than the Ace on 45th and have longer hours (until 7 pm on weekdays). Plus the folks working there (very friendly!) seem to be more with-it. They stock a least one variety of most anything you'd need -- from painting and gardening supplies, to renting a carpet cleaner, to a ph test kit for soil. They don't have as much 'housewares' junk (dishes, cookware, toasters etc.) as the Ace on 45th or Madison Hardware, but they actually have more space, filled with true hardware stock. Some things cost a couple of dollars more than at home depot but you won't spend an hour driving up there and wandering around the acre property looking for it. And, some items are priced the same or less.

Friendly staff will help you figure out what you need and show you where it is. They'll even answer your really stupid questions without laughing at you. And I've got some pretty dumb questions. Before you head to Lowe's or Home Depot and get lost in aisles and aisles with no one to help you, stop by Stoneway.
Also, they rent out Shop Vacs, and are open Sundays. What more do you want, huh?
Indeed, this place is my ace in the hole for odd ball items and a surprisingly large selection of all sorts of odds and ends. Indeed they have no lumber but if you want plumbing, electrical, odd ball copper tubing, nuts for oil lines or refrigerator lines and flaring tools, they have it. Great little find and much more convenient that the biggies but they are not cheap. If you want quantity, go to the biggies.
They are also much more helpful than the biggies. If you have questions, it is very easy to find someone and they are actually very useful.

A great local hardware store. They have virtually everything you typically need except from lumber. They are more expensive then the giant chains but the convenience of being close and not having to worry about "going Home Depot" makes it worth while.
