Reasonable prices and the service is really very good. There is a vast selection of fine and specialty fabrics - i look forward to making my halloween costume from fabric here next year!
I'm going to start signing up for their classes. I can't wait.
they have a lot, but they never seem to have what I'm looking for. And it's all expensive. I think best for quilters?
Also, I realized a lot of their buttons are sold at Big Longs for 1/2 the price. (They take them off the cards (preprinted price) and have them loose in small boxes and then charge a lot more!)
It took me 2 minutes in this store to realize that I had wasted my time by ever venturing into Britex. The employees are friendlier, the fabrics are cheaper, with a better selection of some really gorgeous mid-range prints (think Anthropologie, but without the hefty price tag), and they even offer a nice range of sewing classes! It's still pricier than Joann's, but it's better quality for the most part, too.
Though they don't have as large of a selection as places like Britex, what they do have is a really keen variety to choose from; I have been successful thus far in finding everything I've needed from here, with the exception with one part for my sewing machine, which I had to pick up elsewhere.
All in all, I'd say this is a great spot if you're looking to make something that you want to last awhile, and I'll definitely go back.
I didn't come here for fabrics so no comment there...rather I came here because I had a fight with a table at work.
I lost, and my knitted shirt got sadly torn with a little hole that threatened to engulf the rest of the sweater. I looked this place up on yelp and it was the closest place to get notions so I high-tailed it here.
There were a ton of different threads for a smallish shop and I was kind of overwhelmed. I agree that it's hard to flag someone down, but I stood there looking blank for a minute or two and one of the girls working there came to my rescue.
She showed me which threads would work for mending [any of them], and instructed me on how to mend the hole and keep it from re-fraying [nail polish!]. On my way out to the check out counter I picked up 2 yards of ribbons for my card-making hobby for $.65/yrd; not super cheap but i'll last a while, and is cheaper than buying cute ribbons at papyrus.
I don't have a sewing machine so I probably won't be back for the fabric, but I'll keep this place in mind next time I need sewing supplies.
Stonemountain and Daughter is my favorite shop to spend hours on end. The fabric selection is wonderful and their buyer has an excellent eye for gorgeous prints.
I decided it was time I finally learn how to sew properly and discovered Stonemountain and Daughter at just the right time. I have taken two of their classes: Intro to Sewing and Fearless Zippers. Both taught me so much and were so worth the time and money.
If you love spending hours running your hands over luscious fabrics and gazing at beautiful prints this is your store. I have also found the staff to be very helpful and friendly. I'll continue to come back again and again...
I finally took the 5-week Intro to Sewing class taught by Lisa, and it was absolutely a great experience. Anyone learning how to sew or running into issues while working on a project should take this class. This class is not only for beginners, but if you are one Lisa is amazing when it comes to helping students one-on-one. Lisa is also very patient and encouraging which makes her a great instructor.
In this class I finally learned how to properly thread a sewing machine, learn how to use a sewing machine, different ways to sew a seam, back-tack, read, cut and mark-up a pattern...it was absolutely what I needed to give me the confidence to take on other projects on my own. Fortunately I was able to finish my project, which was an apron. I really would enjoy taking another 101 course with a more difficult pattern and fabric to work with.
This was my first time purchasing fabric, notions and other sewing tools so I had no reference point on pricing for the materials. But if you do take a course with Stonemountain and Daughter you get 20% off your purchase for materials and tools for the class. I have an idea that Stonemountain is probably relatively more expensive than other chain or discount fabric stores, but it is the closest one in Berkeley and locally owned and independently operated! So you can definitely feel good about that!
Stonemountain is a great gate-way into sewing, since they can walk you through what you need in store and in the class. I definitely recommend this class for beginners!
Wow! Loved this place. I called over 10 fabric stores looking for plaid flannel (tartan) for my Braveheart costume. They were the only ones who 1) knew what i was talking about 2) took the time to check stock for me and 3) when I went in - went above and beyond the call of duty to help me out. I can barely sew on a button and they totally helped me figure out how much to buy and how to make a few adjustments to make the costume work out. They even pointed out accessories and hunted down a pattern that might help.
Totally worth the trip across the bay.
Those on a mission for fabric are sure to be charmed by the abundant cottons in a rainbow of colors and prints. They've also an impressive selection of fleeces and whimsical silks. Burners, take note of the bright fur collection too! While the tags are significantly higher than other stores, the offerings and layout make for an easy browse. I could do without the surliness of some of the staff though.
The button wall is spectacular, and got me fantasizing about changing up all my clothes to give 'em a little ZING. Black velvet blazer, you're in for it! I ended up walking out with some awesome bold printed Mexican oilcloth that was only $1 more than what I'd found on the interwebz. Not bad! They also stocked grommets so it was super easy to make a photobooth backdrop out of, but would work equally well as a tablecloth with personality.
Maybe if I took one of their highly lauded sewing classes I wouldn't have had to staple the pieces together!
As a poor college student, paying 48 dollars for four yards of fleece is just a little too far out of my price range, but because Stonemountain and Daughter was the only fabric store within walking distance from my apartment, it had to suffice.
Yes, they were friendly; and yes, they were helpful; but I much prefer mainstream fabric stores like Joanns to Stonemountain and Daughter. To me, Stonemountain and Daughter was poorly organized and way too cramped - I could barely make it through the isles with my two bolts of fleece without knocking into other patrons. Also, a lot of the fabric looked as if they had been trampled on or as if they had sat neglected on the shelves for way too long (ie. dusty and dirty, which is not how I like my fabrics). That being said, I like my fabric stores to have alot of open space, a wider variety of fabrics and prints, and frequent updates in inventory. Plus, I could always use those '50% off one regularly priced item' coupons from Joanns.
Unless I somehow poorly manage my time again, I will not be returning to Stonemountain.
This place has a great selection of stuff. I'm just really disgusted with the quality of customer service.
Don't bother signing up for a class here... total waste of time!
I haven't been inside the store, the draw for me is their classroom and wonderful selection of classes. Their website has all the info you need to get registered. The prices seem pretty dang good to me.
I took 2 classes with Nicole Vasbinder- an Intro to Sewing and Easy Intro to Sewing- Make a Pillow! The Intro to Sewing was a bit redundant because I took the pillow class first, but it was probably good review, since I haven't had a single issue with my machine since- and the mechanical part of sewing is always where I get all tangled up. Nicole's a good teacher and runs her own sewing/craft business.
So, If you were a little Home-Ec girl in Jr. High, all handy with her classroom machine, then didn't sew for 15+ years but have a machine and can't thread the damn thing this is the spot for you. You can take it to the next level here, too, with garment making classes, but I got what I needed for simple things like making basic curtains and hemming pants.
Once you're on their mailing list they hook you up with discount mailers, too!
Ive always considered myself to be somewhat of a quick learner, but for the life of me I couldnt figure out how to sew. I had my mothers old machine, and I had this fear of breaking it. Even after my friend came over to teach me to use it, I used it that day, but forgot soon after. I started handstitching fabric on onesies (shameslss self promotion here: http://wunzees.etsy.com), but really wanted to figure out how to machine sew too..for more options.
The problem got worse when Mick bought me a higher end sewing machine for the holidays...now i really needed to learn.
Enter Stonemountain and Daughter. I took a $30 intro to sewing class yesterday, and left with a pillow. They didnt give me the pillow...i made it! Nicole was great and thorough and a great teacher. I am confident now that I can actually continue sewing, and wont forget how to thread the machine tomorrow.
This place will be a frequent stop for me...i can feel it. Expect homemade gifts this holiday, and more creative costumery come bay to breakers!
I actually found this place through google and because Stonemountain's website is so awesome, I decided to check it out.
There is a wall of buttons and a range of Encino (Etsuko Furuya) prints that are cheer-worthy. One of the reasons why this place is so fun to visit is that the fabric selection is so nice. Someone with good taste went out and stocked this shop with lovely prints. The staff is also super helpful and will take the time to help you figure out your pattern and what you need.
The first time I was here, I didn't understand why there were so many people working there and then in the space of 15 minutes there was mayhem. It seemed like a bus load of ladies had flooded the store and there was barely any walking space between the ladden down women and rolls of fabric...scissors were clipping, registers ringing, people tangled in each to get into the ever increasing line... The large staff made sense after that... :o)
I took a tote sewing class here last weekend and really liked it. Since, I've signed up for the apron, envelope skirt and Amy Butler handbag course. Maybe I'll see you there?
This medium size fabric store has all the right fabric and sewing supplies. I love their selection of stylish Anthropology-style fabrics and their selection of Japanese pattern fabrics. Their staff are very nice and understand customers like me who ooooh and ahhhh at their great selection.
This is not a great place for bridal fabric or many high end fabrics. I ended buying fabrics I liked even though I didn't have a specific need for the fabric.
Check their website before you go - they often have printable coupons for a discount.
They're the closest thing to a craft store around my neighborhood (in Berkeley at least). Though I don't do a lot of sewing, you can find a lot of other things for your crafty needs. They have a small, but very thoughtful collection of yarns. And a ton of needles and notions. There are also plenty of racks of buttons that I love to spin around and around.
They also offer classes for affordable prices, given that you're learning a new skill! Sign up early since they fill up fast. I'm taking a sewing class there in a couple of weeks and will report back!
Too much stimulation!!
The fabrics here are wonderful! There are walls and walls of quilting cottons. And it's one of the few places to buy licensced Cal fabric. I could have spent hours here just looking around, owever there were too many people in the store either working or shopping to move around very easily. The staff are very friendly, and they seem to be "into" their jobs. It's a little more pricey than some of the other fabric stores I've traveled near and far.... but the fabric selection is FAB!
The side room is easily found when you walk in to the store, but the upstairs room is hard to find since it is located in the far corner hidden by bolts of fabric. Upstairs is where the sale fabric and sewing classes are held. Take a peek... You won't be sorry.
Luckily I arrived at the store as it was closing, or I might have gone overboard at the register, bouncing checks left and right and eventually landing in debtors' prison. It's not that the prices are high, but the selection is just so nice and varied that I wanted to pile fabrics in my arms from nearly every aisle. There's a nice mix of basics that you'll find at most discount shops as well as designer stuff (Amy Butler, etc.) that can be harder to find.
Don't forget to wander to a side room and upstairs, where I hope the wacky 70s paisley electric blue terry cloth will be waiting when I return.
The classes are priced well, but sign up early to save a spot. After taking a pillow class with Nicole, I went on a sewing spree, stitching together super-soft pillow cases in sweatpant fabric just in time for a Valentine's gift.
This is by far the friendliest and most helpful store i've ever been to. Besides the fantastic selection which everyone has noticed, no one has mentioned the great people who work there. I've been to a lot of fabric and craft stores, but this one beats them all in customer service. The things i was looking for are pretty uncommon and are for more industrial use, and after helping me check they gave me the name, address and HOURS of a place where i could possibly find them. I was just astonished by the kindness and wonderful help i received and will be going there whenever i need something for sewing.
In this time of chain stores and big cheap outlets we should all try and support these local stores.
Went there for one of their classes ("How to Start Your Own Crafty Business") and found the upstairs room decent for lectures. This was late summer, though, and the room did end up getting a bit hot and stuffy.
I've continued to make stops here when I'm in the area. On a recent trip, I picked up a lovely 1930s reproduction print in cotton for $4.50/yd. It's going to make the cutest pjs!

I love this place.
I wish the classes were cheaper and there were a wider variety of print knits. … Read more »
This fabric store is nothing short of amazing. They have everything you could ever need and more when it comes to sewing. Their fabric selection is out of the world and thier prices are very reasonable. I wish I lived in this store! I could sit in there with the fabric and a sewing machine...it would be sooooo fun.
If you have never been to this store before and like to sew, you are totally missing out. It is such a GREAT store! Make sure to check out the fabrics upstairs in HUGE clearance section.
Really cool, huge selection of fabrics. I've gotten some beautiful and cute Japanese fabrics here that I've made into gifts.
There are two floors, the upstairs has discount fabric and is also where they hold their classes. Customer service has ranged from short to helpful.
Extra points for being the only craft store in the area to carry solid black animal eyes (morbid, neh?). Michael's and Joann Fabrics: why must you only carry the ones with pupils??
Tip: they have coupons on their website
My friend makes costumes for plays and introduced me to this fabric shop one Saturday when we were feeling crafty.
They had everything I needed to make a purse from scratch including interfacing for support, really unique fabric - a black corduroy and a patterned fabric with skulls (Dia de los Muertos was the theme of the purse because it was for my sister's birthday), and a great selection of buttons.
I bought enough supplies to make 2-3 purses and it only cost about $25.
Hey, if you live in Berkeley and are a serious sewer, this is the best quality fabrics without having to catch a Bart to Powell street to go to Britex.
Price-worthy decen fabrics. You probably won't find couture-quality fabrics here, but the buyer seems to have a wonderful understanding of what awesome fabric is. I found an Italian wool knit here for not that much and I get complimented every time I wear something I've used it in.
In response to customer service complaints... yeah. It really depends on who helps you. If a woman with coke bottle glasses approaches you, maybe wait for someone else if you're really about being treated very nicely. She tends to get a little impatient, but if you want to get in and out - hey, she at least supplies fast service. Everyone else there is super nice.
I have never taken a sewing class there, but I recommend to everyone to take a sewing class. I bet they're all right here.
This store has a great selection of fabrics. I've never encountered any attitude or rudeness from the employees. The notions area is fine- they have everything you need, just nothing spectacular. They have gorgeous Italian wools, silks, loads of nice cottons, and a nice novelty section with stuff like bamboo jersey. The buttons are pretty good. I love that they carry patterns from several smaller companies.
I have never taken a class there, but maybe someday.
i wish i was a baller, i would only shop here
as good a fabric selection as can be in that tiny store. same stupid notions as everywhere else (singer and dritz)
good pattern selection
I recently visited this store with a few friends, we all thought it is a great local resource for quilters and seamstresses. We were pleasantly greeted as we entered the store, all the employees had smiles on their faces, the lines were long, but they worked through it in a professional manner. There is a sizable sale area of cotton fabrics, great pattern books, flannels and outstanding button selection.
The workers were fantastic. No chit chat with one another, always working with their customers.
We had a great experience. Please continue supporting these local stores, it is difficult for them to continue making a profit during these tough economic times.
This store is possibly the most dangerous environment I have ever found myself in. The fabric selection is phenomenal, and there are soo many cotton prints to choose from, although be careful, because some of the novelty cotton can get a little pricey! My only problem with this store is even if I come in armed with only a little bit of money on my debit card and a firm resolve to buy only the buttons I need to accent my latest project, I will come out with an overdraft charge and several new sewing projects I don't have time for.
Fortunately I live in Berkeley, but if I didn't I would journey across the East Bay to get to this fabulous store!
I can't sew or knit or anything else which requires patience, but I love buttons and there are tons of buttons here.
"Fabric for fabric's sake."
This is my favorite fabric store. They have a huge selection, sale fabrics that you would actually buy, and a knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff, who actually refer you to other stores when they don't carry something obscure. They are serious about providing fabric for serious sewers who like to wear what they make. Their felted wool selection is great, as is their silk selection. My last purchase included a gorgeous bamboo blend from the ever growing eco-friendly selection. What is there not to buy in this store, that is what I'd like to know.
Bring quarters, if you drive, for the 1-hr max metered parking and keep track of your time, because one hour in here is just barely adequate.
I have signed up for their mailer a couple of times over the past year, but have never received one. I'd like to, since it has discount coupons.
Stone Mountain and Daughter is completely done with partnering with a boycotted hotel to offer a "quilter's weekend special" Here is info on the boycotted hotel in Emeryville, which fired 21 workers a week before Christmas: http://www.woodfinwatc...
Yeah for Stonemountain and Daughter! The fired hotel workers were largely single moms--ceasing their partnership with that hotel reflects well on this local business's support of women and girls.
I'll be shopping there for curtain material soon, with a glad heart.
There are a lot of great, modern prints here, fun patterns, buttons and some classes that look like they'd totally be worth the drive, because you'll find a print you love and need a project to go with it.
Stonemountain is AWESOME! This place is the reason I've dusted off my Singer Featherweight and starting sewing up a storm again. I've also started quilting. And all thanks to Stonemountain.
The selection of cotton prints is truly amazing. They have an entire wall of Japanese fabric. Can I tell you how awesome these fabrics are? Little cartoon owls, dragonflies, bunnies... So beautiful. They also have vintage reproductions, batiks, and designer stuff. The only cottons I wasn't impressed with were the African ones. The selection was small and just uninspired.
As mentioned by other yelpers, the button selection rocks, as does the selection of trims, ribbons, elastics and notions. If you sew or want to sew, you'll be all set at Stonemountain.
Wow. I agree with Anna G.: Stonemountain and Daughter is a hidden gem! I had no idea how big this place was until I was inside--there's an entire upstairs full of sale stuff, too! It's much bigger than it looks.
The selection of notions is impressive. I expected that I might need to hit the internets for some of the things I needed, but I found them all here (which totally surprised me). So obviously, I must give them props for selection. One strange and not so positive thing, however, is the pricing. It doesn't make much sense, at least for the notions. I needed some D rings and found many packages of the same item (same UPC and everything)--but they all had different prices written on them. ??? I really couldn't figure it out, so I just bought the cheapest of the packages and called it a day. I found the same thing with the velcro. Riddle me that one, batman.
They have a great selection of fabrics. Fabulous. I mostly looked at the cottons, but I saw that they had a large variety of other types of fabric as well. I'll definitely be back!
PS: Hannah is really nice.
Nothing gets my creative energy going more than acquiring even MORE raw materials than I already have stashed away!! The fact that Stonemountain and Daughter happens to be within walking distance from my house is dangerous! I am at the point where I have forbidden myself from buying one more "project-in-the-wings"...I know all of you know what I mean...
Suffice to say this the the greatest place to find any sort of fabric you may want/need/must have. It is true (like another reviewer noted) they do not have upholstery fabric. It is also true that they don't have a fabulous selection of yarn. I would counter this, tho', that there are several amazing other shops which specialize in yarns of all sorts. Don't know much about the upholstery, tho' I am pretty certain there are some shops which do carry a selection. I have gotten the best fabric here as well as buttons I love. I also appreciate the attentiveness of the women who work here. They can get me out of any sewing jam I have gotten myself into! I love Kathleen..we wind up talking every time I go in!
The shop also carries the patterns of local designers and offers terrific classes. Dangerous for people like me who stash fabrics away, yet soooo enticing. Spring's coming....make something new for yourself or someone you love. As Martha would say, "It's a good thing."
ADDENDUM: I have splurged again and purchased some really great new fabric. They have fun stuff in for Spring and all sorts of new classes. Very addicting, and no one else will have the same thing if you get crafty and make something yourself!!
This place is really something for a sewer. They must have every sewing accessory in the world, a pretty huge selection of buttons, and a ton of unusual fabric. The prices aren't competitive and as for yarn or other textile crafts the selections were well picked, but slim. My favorite part though, is all the small designers they carried!
I had read on here, that the service could be not too hot, and when I went they were having an open house. The place was packed and it looked like everyone was working hard to help people and ring them up. It wasn't the fastest process, but I don't think that they are that interested in getting your money and getting you out. Everyone seemed to be genuinely enthusiastic about working there, and just wants to chat about what you're doing and what you're buying. I suppose it can make you feel slighted when you're waiting and they're chatting with someone, but I think to the person that they are talking to... it feels more like that personal attention, which is the reason you go to small shops like this.
Good place for sewing classes. Not the cheapest place for fabric and notions.
I finally learned how to sew from these people here. I've taken 3 courses so far. Some good instructors (I really liked Alice Elliott's courses). An older instructor might be a bit old school, and tend to jump ahead with what they're used to doing 100 years ago, rather than really look at what your pattern is dictating.
Sewing is a skill especially useful for those who have oddly shaped bodies, have trouble buying off the rack clothes or don't want to pay for a tailor to alter everything. For example, if you're really petite, or have unique proportions that differ from the usual cuttings, or have a third arm, etc.
I have an average figure and can fit in off-the-rack items, which is totally fortunate...because I stink at sewing. STINK at it.
Stonemountain carries an absolutely astonishing collection of wonderful fabrics. The owner (daughter) does the fabric buys and her taste is amazing, You will always find something that inspires to the point of recklessness - just dig through the mountains of silks, wools and cottons.
Why only four starts? It's a bit cluttered and the inventory can be spotty at times. But I would only give Britex three stars because they are snooty and too expensive. What can I say, I'm picky. Oh the Berkeley parking machines outside will drive you to drink.
I love everything about Stone Mountain - the fabrics, the staff, the classes! Only thing is I wish they had MORE fabrics and MORE classes because I can't get enough.
I shop at all the local fabric shops that I know of, and Stone Mountain is by far my favorite. They always have an up-to-date selection of decorator cottons, and their Japanese fabric is to die for. If you see something you like, you might want to snatch it right up though because as I've learned it might not be there next time. WAH! =/
They also have great notions and trim - I have a weakness for Clover products and they've got all the pompom and yo-yo makers you could ever want. The standard stuff you can probably get at Jo-Ann with your 40% coupon but for the good stuff - like the magical Fasturn kit and higher-end handbag hardware that you don't have time to buy online - I'd recommend Stone Mountain. If you sign up for their mailing list, they'll occasionally send 20% coupons that I run in and use immediately so that it doesn't expire. =]
Classes - I've taken Garment Construction I, Open Sew Lab, Handbags II and a couple others and they've all been awesome. The instructors are knowledgeable, friendly and patient. I'm particularly a fan of Nicole Vasbinder (aka Queen Puff Puff) and Terry McClintock. If you sign up during their open house dates, you can get 10% off class registration. YAY! And students get I think it's 10% off their supplies before the class.
I go here with my mom and remember how many times I pulled pins out of my feet as a boy. My mom's canvas is canvas, with sparkles, patches and imagination.
The fabrics are all over the map, from frumpy to fabulous, the staff are learned, very cool and never cold.
Make a half shirt for a friend.
