In my uninformed opinion on such matters, Stonehome has excellent taste because out of the half dozen or so wineries I have been to in my life, they carried the specific bottle I remember best.

It was the elk that my wife used to entice me into the door, and the elk was no longer being served for the evening by the time we showed up on a Friday night. We were miraculously sat as a walk-in during a lull in the BAM crowd, being provided with seats at the big proud slab of hardwood that serves as a very prominent and spacious bar.

The slightly scruffy haired bartender with an impressive beard and nice shirt was an unpretentious enough to loosen my inhibitions and I ordered a flight - 'floral and aromatic', sophisticated aficionado that I am not. At 18 dollars for three glasses, I began to wonder if maybe this sort of habit wasn't just as easily accessible as my craft brew obsession.

Mr Bartender knowledgeably but tactfully explained to me why the finger-lakes wine of my home region was only represented with one measly desert bottle. He dropped into details about climate, grape, and soil, as he gracefully offered up a complimentary glass of gewurztraminer the owners had picked up on tour last summer which, shockingly, I had actually enjoyed before. Should I have felt slighted that it didn't make the menu? If so, nobody let on.

The interior was a lot more solid and a little less lofty than the small sample of wineries I couldn't help comparing it to, but that made it seem warm and cozy with an inviting looking garden out back. Varnished wood with a bar so long and deep we had no problem eating at the bar even when Stonehome was packed.

We had a bleu, a cheddar, and a goat spread, which were interesting to taste if fairly standard representations. I suppose this was intentional, the cheese being just mild enough to highlight the wine as the house's palate de rigeur - as well as encourage our hungry anticipation of the main course.

My braised pork made up for the lack of elk handily, even if I felt spaztle is rare enough that it should have been more than a passing garnish. Did I mention the German menu as another niche to draw one such as myself into a glass? The Atlantic trout was delicious as well.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable evening and I would recommend Stonehome to anyone who, like me, loves a good wine selection but needs a lot of encouraging and a great meal in order to admit it. It was too packed and too pricey to seem like the kind of place you could ever just casually drop in for just one glass, however their extensive wine library and ability to cater to the not-quite-wine-snob guarantees I'll have no problem letting Stonehome bring me up to speed - checking for the elk at the time I place my reservation.

We went to Stonehome Wine Bar right after a BAM show and i felt sick and had to go home right after we got a cheese plate.

The tragedy of my life.  I've been looking for that cute, dimly lit wine bar ever since, and i think it's this one, so we are trying again tonight!!!

I love this place. This place is one of the reasons why I love living in BKLN. I celebrated a birthday here a few years ago; I celebrated my new job a few months ago; I've come here after going to a show at BAM; and I've come here at times just because I like it. I like the beautiful 40-foot long curvaceous cherry wood bar (in fact, I prefer to sit at the bar); I like the modern interior design which is sleek and warm at the same time. I like the calm of the backyard garden. I like the attention to details put by the owners, from the wine list, to the menu, to the decor.

This is, first and foremost, a wine bar. As such, they have one of the best wine selection you can find in NYC. Moreover, their choice of certain less known but excellent wines (for example Cannonau from Sardinia) shows how carefully the list has been put together. On the wine list you will find sure winners and more daring proposals. The list is composed of about 200 wines from around the world, mainly from small producers. About 30 wines are offered by the glass, or as tasting flights if you're feeling playful (3 wines, 3 pouring ounces each, $17).

Their beer list is also impressive: Aventinus, Maredsous, Whale's Tail Pale Ale, just to name a few I like.

The fact that this is a wine bar should not deter you from eating here. I wouldn't call the menu small, but very focused: the intent is to accompany the wine experience in a non-intrusive, yet assertive way. The changing menu focuses on seasonal, sustainable, and local produce. The charcuterie and cheese platters are always excellent; last time I was there VH and I got the Zamorano with quince, Robiola, and Greyson. The wild striped bass with fennel, orange, citrus, string beans, and olive was simply phenomenal! I noted the name of the chef, John Gibson, because all the dishes I tried at Stonehome have been fantastic: very flavorful and inventive; you will always find on the menu a dish you REALLY want to try (like elk venison!). This guy is going places.

The staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly, always willing to suggest a pairing of wine with your food, or to fill your water glasses before you need to ask.

Keep in mind that this is a popular pre- and post-theater destination for nearby BAM goers, so it can get very busy any evening of the week.

I wish I was at Stonehome tonight...

Go for wine but probably not dinner. The server was dumb and dull; the menu was way too small. I did enjoy my crispy chicken though, and the portion was generous. So, go if you like to order chicken at restaurants. Oh, and an unlikely plus? The kidney-shaped tables: good for groups of indeterminate number, or, say, 5.

a week after moving in, i was SUPPOSED to have had a potluck so i could kick my ass into turbo studio-decorating mode como extreme makeover home edition style.

so, of course, it's been three weeks and i still don't have curtains. to all my lovely neighbors, i am SO sorry i've blinded you ... for life. but, yes, i HAVE been doing my squats and lunges. thanks for noticing.

anywho, i digress. instead of dindin at my place, i yelped my new hood and landed upon stonehome. with my fierce negotiating skills - meaning, i said pretty please (teehee) - i was able to cajole my poor friends into hitting the wine bar up with me.

just so you know, this place is mad cute from the cozy booths to the dim lighting to the scruffy bartender behind the bar. (yes, all three dining mates' heads turned when i shared that important observation.) wine flowed, a variety of appies were split, entrees were shared and the chocolate cake was devoured. mmm, mmm good.

uncomfortably full, i rolled on home and quickly changed into my jammies.* still basking in the wonderful-ness of my meal, i had no idea i bared all right in front of my window. to that woman, smoking her ciggie in the garden ... please, please don't hate me. again, i'm SO sorry.

* - gold lame, of course. we sleep in style here in fort greene.

This would be my favorite bar in the whole of NYC! I love the wine list, I love the flights, I love the cheese selection, I love the dinner menu, I love the atmosphere, I love the service, I love the ambiance, I love the spacious bathroom! Whether I end up here on a date or with a pal or a group of friends for dinner, I just love how much I feel at home here. The staff are so nice and accommodating and they always seem to remember me from the last time. I'm an old world wine snob and this place does my tastes justice- there is a bit of everything with just enough old world vintages to keep me coming back. The lowish lighting makes it an intimate place for quiet conversation.

Great wine by the flight. Great cheese plates. Adorable cozy wine bar setting, making you never want to leave on a cold fall or winter day. Definitely a place to "accidentally" drink a lot of wine and cancel the rest of your plans for the evening (or stumble over to one of the free music nights in the BAMCafe). A wonderful little find on one of my very favorite blocks.

The four stars here are for Stone Home as a wine bar. If I was evaluating it more strictly as a restaurant, I'd have gone with 3 stars only.

The wines and accompaniments (cheese and charcuterie) work well and were nicely thought out. They have bottles, by the glass, and flights (always fun). Their selection is fairly wide ranging and diverse (not as thoughtful of a selection as Brook Vin over in south slope, though). They have cheese platters with either 3 or 6 cheeses and same for charcuterie. Both are great and the prices cannot be beat (you can get 3 very generous portions of cured meat for only $10). We tried the pork rillettes, saucison sec, and salame and all were very good.

Entrees here, however, seemed more of a miss to me (though also very reasonably priced). I ordered their cut of steak. It was cooked nicely - plenty of red and with a nicely seared and flavorful crust. Everything else about this dish, though, was unappealing. It was served with an overly vinegary wine sauce that totally overpowered the dish. The sides were sunchokes (which looked and tasted like rounds of undercooked potato) and some mushrooms (bland, uninteresting). Others in our party tried the braised pork shoulder and it seemed a bit better, so perhaps that is the way to go.

Another miss here was the service. Our servers were totally limp and lifeless. We were a party of 6 and having a good time and they seemed reluctant to "bother" us with things like telling us the specials, ordering, our food, clearing the table, etc.

So, Stone Home is a very reasonably priced wine bar that succeeds as such quite well. Next time I go there, it will be for wine and cheese only.

The wines are good.  I love eating a late dinner at the bar on a weekday.  The cloth napkins are soft!  I like ordering the cheese and meat plates --the prices are very fair.  The garden in the back is pretty --the ivy on the walls rise and fall with the breeze like waves in a green ocean or the back of a really big hairy sea monster.

The decor is uninspired.  I mean really, really uninspired.  Like maybe you are not a cool young urban professional eating a late dinner of exotic meats and cheeses at the bar after all, maybe you turned into a grown-up douchebag whose only source of culture is through aged animal products and who luxuriates in the softness of strange cloths applied to the face.

Oh well.

This is another great bar in the neighborhood. Their wine selection would be somewhat intimidating were I sober, but not sober, it reads like The Funnest Six Page Book Ever Written By Grown-Ups. Their charcuterie and cheese plates are generous and very well edited. Although one time a friend and I ordered a [goat?] cheese that can only be described as Fucking Vile Satan Fart. Heinous. I swear we both took a bite and looked at each other with tears in our eyes. I wish I could remember what the name of it was, because I would buy it in bulk just to bury it deep in the ground or feed it to French sharks. Ah, zut alors.

This is more of a latish night spot for me, so I haven't had the chance to eat anything off their entree list, but everything I've tried off the first course list has been on point and tasty. As for everything aside from the food and drink, it's kind of a mixed bag. Quiet, questionably decorated, dimly lit. The waiters are for the most part unobtrusive, the backyard spare but comfortable. It's reliable.

Good little find.  Not a crowd in sight on Saturday night at 11pm.  Back patio was lush with foliage.  God how I miss greenery sometimes.  Perhaps a lot of Ft. Greene is like this? I don't know, I'd never been to the neighborhood before, but more places like this & I could be converted.

Had a nicely priced & nicely crisp bottle of something South African & sweet & white, can't remember the name.

Approved.

Got it right.  Wine, service and atmosphere have what it takes to come back to time and time again.  I'm not going to wax on about the list, or the food, but Stonehome has that vibe that breathes a little life into what can come off as the cliched, stuffier aspects of the wine world.  A little underground spot that my friends and I look forward to calling home base in Brooklyn.

Thanks, Aaron.  You made our night.  See you soon.

TASTY!  (maybe a bit overly tasty?) I had their chicken and bf had the braised beef.  I loved the chicken, but after a 5-7 bites, it was a bit too seasoned for me.  The fancy mac n cheese it came with was delish as well.  I liked bf's braised beef, it was yummy (but how could you go wrong with braised anything!)  I guess my expectations were a bit high, therefore the 4 stars, but don't get me wrong...we both loved our dishes!
I wanna go back and have some wine and cheese.

Wow - twice in Brooklyn in one week.  That's a record for me, and if Brooklyn is home to more wine bars like Stonehome, then I'm sure to visit more frequently.

The interior is warmly lit, long and narrow.  One thing I noticed, strangely, was the cutlery.  I hardly ever take the time to notice it - but the knife and fork were well polished, had a nice heft, and were way nicer than most cutlery you see today in any restaurant.

The prices are quite reasonable, and the dishes tasty - such as seared scallops, mushroom ravioli, pork croquettes.  And the cheese plate is quite nice as well.

A cute spot in Ft. Greene - I wanted to check this place out after reading all the good reviews here.

The restaurant was really good & I highly recommend it, but it didn't quite live up to expecations.  Seating was pretty cramped, service was good but disinterested, and their wine-by-the-glass selection was not as extensive as I'd hoped (especially for a wine bar).

Now, on to the good things.  The atmosphere was intimate and nice - perfect for a date or a small gathering of friends.  I didn't mind being less than 8 inches from my neighboring diner when I realized I was sitting next to Kerry Russell - hehe. Although the menu was small, the food was very good.  My friend and I shared the Pork Belly & Pear salad for an appetizer and the Alaskan Pollock as an entree.  Both were excellent - the pork and the pollock were perfectly cooked, moist & juicy with just a slight crispiness to the outside.  They were melt-in-your-mouth good!

I wish they had a wider range of wines by the glass, but that won't deter me from coming back here again.  I'm really interested in trying their wine flights.

Food: Get the braised beef. Seriously. Cheese plates are good. I don't know a lot about wine but the wait staff has recommended several really good bottles. The chocolate dessert is just ridiculously good and I am not a huge chocolate fan. They also have good specials whenever I go. Did I mention the braised beef.

Service: Always great. Friendly. Fast.

Decor: I love the fact that it is kind of underground. It is a small space but they designed it well. Well lit. You are a little close to other people but hey, it's New York. Perfect for a good date night.

This WAS my first Yelp review. Somewhere in the 80+ count, Srini V (http://sriniv.yelp.com), was shocked that I had written so many reviews (while encouraging me to continue the good Yelp) and none had a 5 star rating. Chicken sh-t, I stalled and went back and deleted 5+ reviews. This was one of them.

It's Sunday evening (4/13/08), about 5:30 PM. The restaurant is empty, but we can't get a table. It's all booked for a private party. We sit at the bar and order glasses of wine. I went with a Domaine Charles Pain Cabernet Franc and my wife chose Vinzini Pinot Noet (Noir). Ah, sweet nectar.

"Aaron" Fox was the bartender pouring our wines and answering multiple questions on the menu. Yes, it has been almost two years since we last ate here (and living in Fort Greene). The restaurant didn't seem to change much; it is still quaint and comfortable. I knew that the entrees would not be fantastic but everything else will be.

My wife tried the wild striped bass with vegetables and risotto. The dish was a tad salty. I ordered the venison dish and it was ok; I expect a little excitement when I taste meat (now I sound like one of those entitled Iron Chef America judges who don't deserve to eat).

Fig tart! WOW.

It was "Fox's" favorite dessert. Oh yeah, we dug it too, with French pressed coffee.

The food isn't what carries this place. The cheese, charcuterie and wines do. Stonehome is really good for wine, a little bite and ultimately a pleasant experience.

A VERY cute place to have a few glasses of wine after dinner. A friend of mine and I went there for a few glasses of red after another awesome burger at Mullane's Bar and Grill around the block.

Our server was Alex -- she was awesome. We sat outside in a beautifully lit garden in the back. They have a very long list of bottled wines, wines by the glass, dinner, and great munchies to go with wine. They also have a wine tasting menu that looks like fun -- and probably a little educational considering I know NOTHING about wine.

Another reason to love Ft. Greene.

3.5. Everything is pretty nicely considered here, without being cloying, and that goes from the wine selection through the food and service. We'll be back. That said, I think the cheese and charcuterie (or at least the 6 items we ordered) were not outstanding and I think some of these reviewers' enthusiasm stems from the excitement of having a place like this here in Ft. Greene. Next time we'll be trying the entrees, which, while pricey, looked the part!

My boyfriend and I ate dinner here a couple of weeks ago.  Overall, we had a lovely experience!

The wines were quite tasty (I stuck with a Shiraz, while he tried one of the "Tasting Flights"), and I'd recommend the cheese plate for starters.  The decor was very well thought out -- lots of fun design elements and warm colors, very soothing and comfortable.  Our waiter was efficient, knowledgeable, and friendly (and very cute too!).

We normally enjoy dining outdoors where possible, but our visit to Stonehome fell on a particularly hot Saturday night so we avoided their cute rear patio this time around -- we plan to return there when the weather cools down to check it out!

This place is awesome. Not only is it cute, comfy, modern and stylish inside, but they have a nice back patio which is great for a dinner party. The staff is super knowledgeable about wine and it's fun to sit at the bar and do tastings with them. Also...this place got me hooked on charcuterie and cheese plates because their selections are always outstanding. In fact, everything they make is quite delicious.

You will never have a bad meal here.  Every dish I've ever ordered (or tasted off of friend's plates) is eye-rolling good mmmm.  It is not often that I order chicken, but the pan roasted chicken here is hard to stay away from.  The last time I was there, my friend had the venison over a sweet potato puree, and it, too, was outstanding.

It's a small menu, but that is my favorite kind.  Especially when they're doing everything right.

I honestly have no complaints, except I will concur with some fellow reviewers that the cheese list is lacking.  I'm a bit biased, I suppose, working the door part-time at 'Inoteca on the les, where the cheese list (and my 50% discount) is enough to make me go on my days off.  I keep wanting it to change when I return to Stonehome after some time away, but nope.  Same old, boring cheeses.
The wine flights are cool, and the service gracious.  I was taken down to the kitchen to meet the chef after I highly praised the meal to our server.  He was a cool, modest dude.  Hmmm.  I should have invited him to Moe's for a beer after his kitchen closed.

There's always a next time!

I finally had a chance to step into Stonehome last night, and was immediately impressed by the design of their beautiful bar.  (+2 stars) We just had to take a seat at it and then noticed that there was a modest patio and the entire place was pretty well filled for a Sunday evening! (+1Star)

S-home has a good wine selection (+1 star) and the cheeses were tasty, but a bit on the skimpy serving size.   I doubt that I would eat a meal here, but would probably visit again for wine /apps/dessert.  Unfortunately, during my experience, the service was not as friendly and welcoming as it should have been. (-1star)

Note: They have a $20 minimum for credit card use.

Tip:  We did not get cellular service in the bar past about 10 feet in, so careful if you are expecting a call.

I love chicken. And the Pan-Roasted Free Range Chicken with Root Vegetable Gratin, Wilted Greens and Dark Chicken Jus here, folks, is to die for. I know that sounds crazy, but this poultry dish is probably the best I've ever had. No joke.

Went here after a show (MacBeth) at BAM. Was looking for a nice wine place to simply round out the evening. The wine selection was plentiful but we ended up going with a nice inexpensive Sella & Mosca Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva from Sardina cause anything from Cannonau is always good. And the vibe of the place was great. Wish we had something along these lines in the UWS.

And then... I was blown away by the Pan-Roasted Chicken.

the New Year's Eve Special menu with wine pairing looked so good online, that I went against my previous plan (of doing nothing) and decided to go all out.

We were a late seating (10 pm) so I only realized later (just now) that the menu was different, but equally enticing.  I didn't notice/care, just bring on the YUM.  Every choice on the menu for each course sounded great so we both just let ourselves be surprised for each course in order to cover the most dishes between us.

1.  I'm not sure how to eat quail in a civilized manner and I'm not sure that I care to know.  Pick up that tiny leg and CHOMP.
2.  How can you go wrong with that much wine?

it was great and we rang in 2009 over dessert.  I will have to come back on a normal night to try to regular menu. or a wine flight.

we were seated promptly for our reservation (probably don't want to overbook on New Year's.)  Our server was great.  Plus they were very nice over the phone when I was making the reservation.

I've only been here for drinks, but the vibe is totally my speed. Mellow yet elegant. Dark and romantic, and the crowd seemed very mature (not in a senior citizen way, but there wasn't much riff raff or teenyboppers patronizing the joint). Totally makes up for the fact that I had a one-hour trek into Brooklyn to meet up with friends there.

Since my friends and I only hung out at the bar, sipping South American wine, we didn't get the opportunity to share a meal here. That said, I spied a number of tasty looking dishes being delivered to tables. Guess that guarantees a return visit!

It's a sexy little space.  The back patio area feels romantic, while the interior bar and seating area is a great place for friends, casual dining, or a date.

It's dressed up, but you don't feel like you have to be.

However, the server was off on the wine recommendation.  We asked for a sweet riesling, and ended up w/a dry.  I'm hardly complaining; I still consumed.

I'd definitely go again.

I think this is my favorite place in the BK right now!
I love the ambience, the set up, the fact that it's small, and a little hidden.
The food menu is not extensive, but it's not meant to be as it's a wine bar, not a full restaurant.  However, the cheeses and appetizers they have available will do the trick.
They have fantastic wine and champagne.  My favorite so far was the sparkling wine flight for $20.
I've had good and bad waiters: there's one guy in particular that knows everything about the wines, the food, and deserts.  There's one girl (I think she's a bartender and maybe we filling in for a waiter) who is awful and really shouldn't be allowed to talk to customers.  I'm not sure why she's there 'cause she doesn't fit in with the place.  Everyone else is friendly and nice.
Love this place!

I still do wish I could afford it.
I went there with friends, i luckily didn't pay the check, and left upset. Our waitress insisted on filling up our glasses, hoping we'd get more bottles of wine. Why could'nt she leave us alone ?  I know real estate is a part of the food industry, but pushing us to spend money wasn't a smart thing to do.

Stonehome is my new local favorite.  I've been thrice and twas always much better than nice.  The selection of wines is great (heavy on French - esp. Bordeaux) but like Mike E said, the cheese selection feels uninspired.  It's actually pretty  lame.  The problem is not the quality but rather the selection which includes only the basics which are offered anywhere.  I can't vouch for panini's but I can certainly say that the "Cider Braised Berkshire Pork with Caraway Scented Savoy Cabbage and Roasted Sunchokes $17" was one of the best meals that I have had so far this year.  I can't get over how disappointed I was to see my empty plate.  Well I got over once I tried the "Warm Bittersweet Chocolate Cake with Fresh Whipped Cream"

The Pork would be on my top 5 favorite meals of NYC if I had that list...hmm....

I've been a number of time since this review and always love the experience.

Fort Greene has overpriced clothing stores selling APC, overvalued condo developments and sleek pre-theatre restaurants, what's next our very own wine bar? Why yes, the yuppies have infiltrated Fort Greene and we are the yuppies.  Only a yuppie would bother to argue the virtues of the Stonehome cheese plate.
Seriously, I don't know why everyone else is whingeing about it... you can't go wrong with the montrachet and the manchego & they will gladly bring you extra bread.
One caveat is the waitstaff is young and not particularly helpful in giving advice on wine selections.

About 2 weeks passed, and we found ourselves in here again...but this time, we had some dinner to fill our hungry bellies. My BF had the elk, and man, it was GOOD!! EXCELLENT! Very very tasty, and the accompanying sides were wonderful also! Give me some kale and squash puree! I had a cheese platter, cant remember which ones, but all very good! A nice cozy, warm, place for food and drinks :)

A totally non-pretentious wine bar!  This place is always warm and cozy and has an excellent wine selection and delicious cheese plate.  Nothing too fancy or overly spectacular, just a really solid neighborhood spot and a great place to go with a group of friends.

I'm going back tonight because all of my past experiences have been awesome.  It's great because it's so close to BAM that you can catch a movie and then head over here for some light fare and great wines.

Since I haven't done it yet I'm going to try a flight tonight. I usually just get glasses but I'd like to broaden my horizon a bit.

The green salad is great, with a tangy dressing but not overdone (there's no puddle left on the plate when you're finished).  Personally, I think the cheese plate is great and although the choices may be "uninspired" they are still good when you looking for something simple and satisfying.

Their soups are usually really good and I remember trying my friends apple, blue cheese panini with bacon (I think) and it was really good, an nice combination of flavors.

Ooh, my mouth is watering right now at work while I think about what I might try tonight.

Went again recently...had great service.
The girl was friendly, without being overly so and knew the wine list.
Everything else was as good as ever.

This is one of the best joints in NYC provided that it is not crowded.  The food is pretty good, and they have a great cheese/meat plate.  Their starts are great, and the wine stupendous.  I always spend a few hundred bucks there when I go, that's why I'm giving it 4 stars :).

The wine is fine, but don't eat here.

Seriously.  Just don't.  I know the menu looks good, but the execution is lousy.  The cheese plate was, well, cheese.  None of it was interesting or distinctive.  The soup special was bland and undistinguished.  And the panini was charred on the outside, barely warm on the inside, and really not tasty at all.  For thirty bucks a person (including one drink each) I would have expected at least one of the three things we ordered to be decent.

Go and order wine.  They have a good wine list.  Just eat somewhere else.
