20 reviews for Stoneground Restaurant
This is our "go to" place when we're not sure what we want for dinner. We probably eat at Stoneground 10-15 times a year. I can't really comment on the sandwiches since I always order the pizza or a meal, but I think we have had almost - if not all - of the dishes on their menu.
The house salad dressing cannot be beat. The pizza - especially Bob's Late Night - is above average, but it is the pasta and polenta dishes that shine. We have never been disappointed with a meal at Stoneground.
One word of caution - on Sunday evenings all they have is all-you-can-eat pizza.
I really like stoneground. However, I'm only giving 3 stars because I'm disappointed that they no longer make slices to order. I loved being able to order a slice of pizza with kalmata olives, carmalized onions, and roasted garlic and not forcing my crazy pizza tastes on the entire table.
The staff is great, the atmosphere is great, and the location and parking are convenient. I've been the Stoneground with large groups for birthday dinners and the staff has been very accommodating.
The pizza and pastas are very good. I just wish they'd bring back the damn slices.
I've been to Stoneground twice now, once on a date and once with a group of friends. The two experiences were quite different.
Both times I ordered the Artichoke Heart Throb and both times I quite enjoyed the atmosphere.
The first time, the food was delicious and the service was stellar. Really, no complaints, especially since I didn't pay the bill. ;)
The second time I was with five other girlfriends. We purposely arrived before the dinner rush on a friday night, yet Stoneground was already nearly full. They had just had a party of six arrive before us that was about to occupy their large booth and for whatever reason they couldn't push two tables together so rather than wait, we chose to all squish into one of the smaller booths. Not really a big deal.
Our waitress took our orders quick enough, but then our drinks and salads took forever to arrive. Again, not the end of the world. I'm a fairly reasonable person. The problem was that the people that she seated at the booth next to us about 10 minutes after us had their drinks and appetizer long before we had our drinks.
When the drinks and the salads arrived, the waitress couldn't for the life of her remember who ordered what and there was a lot of switching around the table. We didn't get offered any pepper for our salads. I know that sounds like such a lame thing to be upset about, but I love me some fresh pepper on my salad, especially with their delicious balsamic dressing!
Our food arrived and there was more confusion as to who ordered which plate. We all agreed that the food was worth the wait, so delish! However, by that time we were just hugely frustrated with the waitress.
She redeemed herself a bit when my friend found an eyelash in her food, she covered the cost of the meal.
Then she just as quickly lost that redemption by tipping herself 18%. I swear she made the decision to add the gratuity as soon as she saw our group and decided that she didn't need to work for a tip anymore. I really find that quite ridiculous. I hesitate to put the waitress' name on here despite the fact that I know it. Who knows, maybe she was having a bad night? If you really are curious and want to avoid being seated at one of her tables, message me and I'll tell you.
Here's the thing, I like Stoneground. I'll probably go there again. The food is yum and the atmosphere is great. I just think I will hesitate before going with a six-person group ever again. I think anyone going as a couple will do just fine.
Give it a try, see for yourself.
A solid menu, decent selection of beers and a nice wine list. The staff is always friendly and the food always delicious. A bit on the pricey side if you are on a budget, though.
Try the House Pasta, Baked Ziti and don't make it out the door without trying the famous Tiramisu.
I like this place. Worn wood, stone table tops, and a second-floor location with big south-facing windows make for a cool aesthetic. I bet that the college kids love this place. (They do serve beer too.)
They have a great house balsamic vinaigrette; if you get a salad, don't miss it. The pizza was also very good; I got the forest mushroom and goat cheese--B+. These are the thinner neapolitan-style pizzas, so a hungry person can eat a 12-incher with no problem.
Travel every year to Salt Lake to go to a technical conference held at the downtown library. Every year we make a trip across the tracks and grab lunch at Stoneground. The food, service, atmosphere and beer selection are all above average especially for Salt Lake City.
If you are in mood for a beer/wine and some Italian, you should stop in here.
I recently moved up here to SLC, and I figured that since I live here, I may as well start trying out some new restaurants.
Stoneground Pizza had gotten some good reviews, and it sounded like a fun sit-down-waiter style place for a date, so we went.
There is parking in the back - if you're headed west on 400 south, take a right hand turn into the skinny alley between Stoneground and Charlie Chow's, and there's a huge lot behind the buildings for free, stress-free parking.
The atmosphere is great. We went on a Friday night and weren't sure what to expect, but it didn't have any of the bar noise, nor did it have any of the pool sharks loitering around - it was a great atmosphere. It felt adult, and very cool - yet it wasn't somewhere that I would be hesitant to take my kids/family, if that were the case. I wouldn't take young kids, as it was pretty swanky, but 8-12 year olds I wouldn't think twice about.
While we waited for our food to arrive, we played a game of pool - $1 when it's not 2-5 PM happy hour free pool - and really enjoyed ourselves. The music was good, at a nice medium volume, and people didn't seem to mind. Gorgeous pool tables that match the decor flawlessly.
The food? We shared a large Margherita pizza and added our favorite toppings. The pizza was solid - it didn't leave you feeling greasy and bloated like some pizzas can, it felt very healthy. The toppings and cheese were the reason, I think - they were fresh and light. The crust was good, too - again, fresh, light, soft, and fluffy. I'd say it was a $20 pizza for sure.
The salad - Caesar - was $8 and nothing to write home about. I think for $8 a salad should either A.) Be huge or B.) Rock your face. This one didn't do either of those things.
So our bill was around $30 - which is a little steep for a pizza and a salad without any drinks - but we had a great time, hence the 4 stars. We left feeling full without feeling over-full, relaxed, and it was a perfect start to a fun Friday night.
Kick @$$ food, atmosphere and always fresh! Decent wine and beer selection but the food and people here make the SLC drudge vanish! Always recommend this place to any friend or family needing something fun and fresh !!!
Great place for casual dining. Food is generally great, and the beer/wine selection is decent. The service can, from time to time, lack a bit, but that doesn't keep me away. Their pizza and pasta are great, and the Sunday Pizza night is a fun way to discover off-the-menu and interesting pizza combinations. One of my favorite places to eat in Salt Lake.
One of my favorite restaurants in Salt Lake.
Wonderful food.
Cool location.
Great music.
Laid-back atmosphere.
My boyfriend loves the Barbeque Chicken Pizza.
I'm a vegetarian and I love the Penne Pasta and the Artichoke Heart Throb.
I would highly recommend Stoneground to anyone.
Just in town to Salt Lake City for a weeklong conference. It was Sunday night...dark cold....and this traveler from California is looking at the weather on on his iPhone and realizing....I didn't pack warm enough. Oops.
Nevertheless....a SoCal foodie must search for sustenance...
For a Sunday, it was suprisingly scarce, but there was a shimmer of hope amongst the snow-filled clouds and setting sunlight.....only several restaurants open today.... so I started strolling towards Stoneground.
"SIN Sundays"
Great place for some pizza and although I will have only eaten here on a Sunday night....I definitely like the SIN Sundays theme.
5pm - 9pm
Order a beer from their varied selection, 16 or 25 oz on tap, or numerous bottles....and although they have a wine list....I didn't look at it. They bring you a bowl of sald with their house vinagrette, and its bottomless, although I just had a little bit because I was saving room for pizza. The servers rotate and bring around various pizzas, fresh out of the oven, and you can either take a slice of what they are offering, or pass, and simply wait for what tantalizing options are next. Here's some of the slices I witnessed/had:(forgive me if I don't remember them exactly)
Vegetables with roasted vegetable pesto base(first and my favorite)
Hawaiian with jalepenos
Greek
Gorgonzola with pancetta(prob 2nd favorite)
4 cheese over pesto
BBQ meat
Artichoke, chicken, with couple different cheeses(can't remember what they were)
and more...
(by the way...these are reasonable slices of pizza, which are about the size of the palm of your hand...just enough so you can try each kind)
I sat by myself near the window and enjoyed watching some basketball on TV, occasionally watching the nearby people playing pool, and just enjoying the atmosphere. Really cool place and I would come here pretty often if I lived here...especially with friends.
After I was so full I couldn't eat another piece, I just relaxed, and worked on my 2nd beer...they had a rack of different magazines, and I was enjoying thumbing through the recent Wine Enthusiast Magazine.
At 9:30 or so, I started the 2 mile walk back to my hotel room, in the 32 degree wind, and snow.....but Stoneground was worth the trip....good food, good service, good atmosphere....
The only pizza I was hoping they had and would bring around but never got was a mushroom pizza.....Nevertheless, you should check 'em out.
Come for the free pool (2-5pm), stay for the pizza and pasta.
This is where I go for creamy tomato basil soup. The chicken pesto pizza is one of my favorites in Salt Lake. The baked ziti has been complimented by more discerning people than I. Everything I've had here has been really really good. It takes four hours to make the tiramisu and if it runs out you will just have to go back.
Be aware that Sunday is all-you-can-eat pizza so the regular menu is not available.
This place is just a reliable, good fooded good time. There are only a couple of these for me in the city, but this has become one of those go tos. The food is pretty consistent- I don't really dig all their pastas, but ALL of their pizzas are good. Very good. Oh and I totally agree with whoever said to get gelato after- it's a perfect complement to pizza. Try it.
I went to Stoneground on Friday night, 4 days after Christmas, at about 9:15. I don't know if it was because Christmas was earlier in the week or what but the restaurant was nearly empty, there were 4 other parties when we arrived.
I should also note that parking for the restaurant is located behind the restaurant off of 4th South. There is also an elevator if you enter from the parking lot on the north side of the building.
The atmosphere was nice, they have some neat and intriguing paintings on the way in, and the restaurant is very open with dark floors, soft lighting and some exposed infrastructure it has a clean industrial feel. There are two pool tables, 75 cents a game, and at least once TV. I enjoyed the south facing wall which was nearly all glass and looked out over 4th South..
I had the Chicken Parmesan Sandwich, with a side of fries. I wasn't too happy with the way it was presented to me. A big slice of chicken placed on the two halves of an open sub bun. The chicken was so big I wasn't sure how to eat it, I had to cut the chicken in half to fold and close the buns and eat the sandwich. It was a decent sandwich though once I had it under control.
I don't go out too regularly, but when I do go back to Stoneground it'll probably just be for a drink and a game of pool.
Went to Stoneground twice in the past couple of weeks for two business lunches. I hadn't been there in several years and the last time I was there I had a good salad that was huge. The menu offers soup, salad, pizzas, and pastas, and most people go there for the pizza. I was looking for a small meal and bypassed the huge salads this time. I ordered a side salad and slice of pizza. The side salad was made with mixed spring greens with cucumber, onion and an out of season tomato. The balsamic dressing was adequate. I did enjoy the slices of pizza I tried. The crust was thin, the sauce was light (which I prefer) and herbs were tossed on the pizza. The pepperoni was liberally applied. The eggplant parm pizza was interesting. I'm not big on breaded food, and it was slightly burnt.
The place was busy and the wait staff was very slow at times. But it was a good place to get lunch, considering my recent lunch experiences.
SG doesn't seem to have a parking lot, but we never have trouble finding street parking on 300E. The restaurant is on the 2nd floor (up steep stairs with no elevator), and is fairly modern and open inside. The last time we were there it was about 75% full at 8:30pm and we were seated right away.
The service from our waitress was excellent for most of the night. She was friendly, knew the menu well and served us promptly. The drinks came fast and were refilled as needed. My lemonade was very tart and tasty, though I suppose in LDS country good lemonade is a must!
On to the food. Stoneground has sort of an Italian/American menu. The prices are decent, in the $7-10 range for most appetizers, and low teens for the entrees. We started with Balsamic-infused Bruschetta, which was very flavorful with generous portions, though the tomtato hunks were a little on the large size to my taste (so I give it an 8). I also had a Caesar starter-salad (only the full size salad is on the menu, but our waitress volunteered that I could have a half-size if I wanted), which had lovely lettuce and dressing, but the crouton arrangement was odd - a single giant crouton with olive paste on it. I ate the crouton by itself and it was tasty, but my salad lacked needed crunch as a result (7). The house salad: the dressing was good but the variety of lettuce was extremely uniform and non-crispy, so we give it a 3 -- ouch!
Entree-wise, I went with thin-crust pizza, which was large and quite good. It was hot, the crust could perhaps be a little crustier, the topping proportions were good, the pepperoni spicy enough. But something was missing... it was just a touch bland. Perhaps the sauce needed more spices. Anyway I gave it a 7.
The entree salad with chicken, grapes, and walnuts with a creamy balsamic dressing was very flavorful and the only criticism was that the chicken was a little dry, so she only gave it an 8 instead of an 8.5. "Grandma's Pasta" was enjoyable (and gave a 7 despite the scary-to-her appearance of whole cloves of garlic).
Okay, so at this point I'm ready to give this restaurant a strong review. But then we were abandoned. Perhaps it was because I was anxious to get home for a scheduled bout of video gaming, but the check didn't come for about 10 minutes after we all had finished our entrees, and at that point I flagged our server down. I put my credit card on the edge of the table as a hint, which usually works well. In this case however, it took her an additional 5 minutes to compile the bill, and when it came there was only a credit card slip, no detailed check, which is a pet peeve of mine -- how am I to validate the bill is right??? I'd have more sympathy if the restaurant were slammed, but even when we left it still looked 75% busy to me.
Anyway, if I had to sum it up in a paragraph, I'd say that this is a good place to go in SLC that isn't a chain, doesn't feel particularly Mormon (they serve beer for instance), has good food, and mostly good service. It would also be a good place to go solo, because they have a couple of TVs and lots of good reading material to borrow by the front door.
Stoneground's food is nothing to die for and will not be memorable. What I like about this place is that you can play pool, get a beer and interact in lively environment with your friends.
There is ample parking behind the building which makes getting to this place very easy.
And I would recommend hitting Cafe De Bolla (below Stoneground) for some Gelato after the meal-mmmmmmmm.
I ate here on a Sunday night when it's all you can eat for $13, which sounds cool... And it is unless you're a vegetarian.
Basically, you sit down and several servers come around with different pizza concoctions and if it sounds like something you like, you take one, if not, you pass.
My friend had 3 slices before I had one because the first three rounds had meat. And it's about 10 minutes between slices, so expect to stay a while...
Additionally, the pizza slices themselves had some great flavors, but some of them were not very well balanced. They do have the crust down pretty well.
I might eat there again but not on a Sunday night.
When I lived in Utah, Stoneground was in my permanent rotation of restaurants. I love the atmosphere, food (salads are fantastic), easy parking, and wines by the glass. It's nothing super fancy, but that's part of the reason I love it. If I remember right, they have great deals on slices of pizza for lunch too.
Great local restaurant! I was there last night with a group of 7 people. We're here on business and asked the locals we worked with for the best local restaurants and this was one of them. I concur. I split a 12" pizza with a friend of mine. Someone else had their chicken parm "sandwich" which is HUGE(basically a loaf with a small chicken on it). We're here for a month and will probably be back before we leave. I can tell by other reviews that certain nights are busier than others. Last night(a tuesday around 7ish) was dead with only 4-5 tables taken.
