A slice you'll remember! Too many pizza's are a variation of the same Americanized, thick crust, oil streaming specimen... and they have a place. Namely, on a dorm floor at 1am during finals week. But this is a different creature. The crust is thin and not overly sauced. There's no need for a napkin to sop up extra grease. The flavor combos are fantastic - especially the specials! Loved every bite and will definitely be back any time I'm in the area.
The fifth star is for the focus on supporting local farms and other food/beverage companies. They do a great job of telling that story on the menu and even the take home pizza boxes. -

It's tough for me to find gluten free pizza (good anyways) so I'm very excited to have discovered Stone Hearth!
My husband and I went for dinner for the first time and we happened to go on a Wednesday night when they have live music. The jazz band was great, however they were SO loud we couldn't hear ourselves talk. It's not a huge place so the music was a bit overpowering. We also got their toward the end of the night so our waitress was not very attentive and every time she left our table she went two tables over from us to sit with other waitresses and eat and drink beer! I thought that was a bit weird and unprofessional...at least she wasn't rude, just very disengaged.
I got a gluten free spicy banana pepper pizza and it was SO good! The crust was thin so it was cooked all the way through and the toppings were just a perfect combo. My husband got a regular white crust with carmalized onions and sausage and he preferred mine! His was good, but the peppers were cut into huge chunk so they weren't as caramelized as they could've been and were hard to enjoy.
We will definitely be back here! -

Since going gluten free, pizza has not been a fun experience. I usually make my own at this point with the Bob's Red Mill crust mix, but that is not even close to a real pizza dough. I should really try something else.
So coming to Stone Hearth Pizza was a real treat. They specialize in thin crust, which is fine by me, as I like any, to be honest. But the entire time we were eating, my husband kept asking, "Is this really gluten free?" Well, it was, and it was absolutely delicious. I then had a gluten free brownie dessert, which, while not as good as some of the brownies I make, was pretty darn good.
The waiter was also excellent, engaging with my toddler and us. We left him a great tip. We can't wait to go back! -
Review from Catie C.
Besides the slow service, everyone was friendly. This is definitely a kid friendly restaurant with a decent kiddie menu.
If you like thin crust pizza, Stone Hearth is for you. I'm a huge fan of thin crust because I don't want to feel like I'm eating a open faced sandwich. If I want a sandwich, I'd order a sandwich!
I typically create my own pizza because I am very particular about toppings. This time around, I topped my pizza with carmelized onions, garlic and prosciutto. I will never do garlic on my pizza again! Everything else was awesome.
Parking is available in the back which you can use the back door so you don't have to go around the block. Keep in mind that there is a 2 hr parking limit. -

Have been here several times and just never found the food that great. Also, everything that isn't pizza tastes like pizza. I think, for example, that they use the same pizza crust to make their focaccia bread. It tastes the same anyway.
Sometimes they have a band on, which is fun for Needham. On the night we were there the band seemed to have a fan base that skewed kind of older and female. And sequined. With kids in tow. That was kind of interesting. -
Review from Vivian C.
This spot has perhaps 14+ tables for parties numbering 2-6, including one round table for 6 by the window. Parking is available in a lot in the back, which I noticed by the bathrooms, which numbered 2 for women, and 1 for men - score! However, that was only because the men's room is marked handicap accessible, while one of the women's room was marked similarly, while the 2nd was not. But still, I like those odds!
I just stopped here for a snack - an order of Poppers to go. Poppers came 3 for $5 - Three stuffed meatballs made with organic, locally raised beef, fresh mozzarella, sauteed onion, and assorted spices, served with a spicy tomato sauce.
I think I may have had unreasonably high expectations - I figured stuffed meant stuffed. The small dot of melted white stuff I found hiding inside didn't satisfy me. It didn't make much of a flavor impact either. Sizewise, the spheres were about the size of table tennis balls. They looked super tiny in the take out container. The balls themselves were quite meaty, as they had no filler, being a Gluten Free menu item and all. Tasty enough. And even though I forgot to ask for the non-spicy sauce, I didn't find the marinara particularly spicy.
Checking out their menu during my wait, I did like that they had three sizes of pizzas, the smallest being the Junior at 8 inches, which looked to be a good size lunch for a light appetite. And the broccoli on a pizza I spied looked really vibrant green, as if they had blanched them beforehand. -
Review from Jamie G.
This place is amazing. Got a pizza for take out- the "Farm Fresh" (with no artichoke hearts and no red onion, which they were easily able to accommodate). This pizza is FULL of delicious toppings- mozzarella, garlic oil, potatoes, peppers, olives, tomatoes, and topped with an arugula salad with prosciutto and a balsamic dressing (which they put in a separate container for take out- GENIUS! nothing got wilted and easy to save pizza for later too). The crust was thin and crispy and delicious. One of the best pizzas I've had in a long time. And only $14 total for 6 good sized slices. Not to mention they use local organic farm ingredients! AMAZING! I will definitely come back and keep trying more pizzas!

Finally tried Stone Hearth today after wanting to for months. Liked the look of it, and was in the mood for pizza. The experience wasn't bad, but certainly wasn't worth the special trip to Needham.
I'll give them full credit: the crust is tasty. For me that's the single biggest source of disappointment in pizza, crust that is "bready" or "airy." This was thin, a little chewy and fresh. Everything else was just so-so. I had a pizza with Sausage, Onion and Peppers and the peppers were good but the sausage and onion were dull. The sauce is forgetable and the cheese was skimpy.
My girlfriend was with me, and we also tried their Parmesan flatbread and "Presto Pesto" sandwich. The sandwich had plenty of pesto and nice prosciutto, but was way too salty. The flatbread was as well, and while it was cheap enough at $2 it was really dull without any sauce to dip it in. Especially since other things on the menu specifically mentioned dipping options.
The atmosphere was great and service was good. The menu had a few platitudes about how terrible bottled water is, which (true or not) were pushy and annoying. Parking in the area is okay and the beer selection looked nice (even though I didn't partake).
Three stars for being generally nice, but not particularly memorable food-wise. Repeated visits and different ordering might change my mind, but I'm inclined to think it wouldn't go about 3 1/2. -

This is the biggest of all the three Stone Hearth locations.
I had my second Stone Hearth experience at this location. After my first experience at the Belmont location, I feel so comfortable eating here. And the price for what you pay is great. Local, organic and sustainable yummy ingredients. I try to go here whenever I can, it's my favorite gluten free pizza in a restaurant. The servers are always so nice, accomodating, answer all my questions and are very knowledgeable.
I went here because the place is SO gluten friendly and the establishment DOES NOT use soy (with the exception of tofu as a pizza topping option), which is great since I have a gluten/wheat and soy allergy.
Our orders from this trip: (split between my mom and I)
Pizza - Gluten free pepperoni (ask for extra - sometimes they skimp a little on the toppings) pizza with red sauce and cheese, and feta, and broccoli. The pizza is cooked so well! The pepperoni has no nitrates and is made with all BEEF, no pork, yes! (*This is the most memorable Stone Hearth pizza I have had, out of visits to all three locations- see my other reviews).
Salad - this time we got the spinach avocado salad with pesto dressing - the avocado could have been more ripe, but overall the salad was delicious. We loved the pesto dressing. They do not use soy oil in their dressings.
Dessert - the gluten free brownie sundae, we decided to try this after a suggestion from our server. She was RIGHT - THIS DOES NOT DISAPPOINT. Second to the pizza, this sundae is the reason I keep coming back... it's a warm gluten free chocolate brownie with local gelato (vanilla, peanut butter, chocolate, or cherry) drowned in chocolate sauce and topped with candied nuts. We got pbutter and vanilla gelato. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. Its definitely a GOOD sized dessert, and super sweet so definitely split it with a couple people!!
Overall, I love Stone Hearth - I recommend it to everyone I know. It's a dream come true for those with allergies and who crave REAL pizza! GO GO! -

Absolutely love the thin crust pizza. More of a family restaurant though which means you have to contend with other people's noisy small children running around (when did it become acceptable to allow small children to run around the restaurant while the parents eat their meal? This isn't Chuckey Cheese) Mercifully they also serve micro brewery beers which compensates for the noisy children. It is relatively upscale (for a pizza joint) environment on par with a Bertucci's.

Clean, nice atmosphere, friendly staff. Menu has good variety without being overwhelming. Been here twice and everything I've tried has been tasty. Reasonable prices to boot.

Great addition to the relatively scant selection of good lunch places to go in the lovely town of Needham. The decor is vibrant and modern, and the space was nice and open. It was relatively quiet when I got there for lunch with a coworker, but I could see it being a nice place to hang out in the evenings.
They serve delicious pizzas with a focus on locally grown ingredients. I tried the very excellent farm fresh pizza, which included what amounted to a tasty salad on top of a nice, thin crust (just the way I like it). I noticed they also served wine/beer, making it a decent stop for a low-key date. Highly recommended if you find yourself in Needham (which is oh-so-often, I'm sure). -

What is nice about adding reviews on Yelp is that you are able to update or change your opinion of a business after reevaluation. First let me say thank you to Jonathan, the owner for taking the time to reach out to me about my last review and ask me to give the business another chance. Like I always have said, this goes a long way in my book for an owner to actually read reviews posted here about their businesses.
I visited on a Friday night and this location was mobbed with both customers dining in and picking up orders. It was a whirlwind at the front registers and the staff was attentive and able to keep up with the pace pretty well. As I looked around, I noticed an array of customers from families to couples all enjoying their meals and plenty of smiles around the tables.
I picked up an order to go of a large Four Cheese Pizza along with something called Poppers (Meatballs) and some Tiramisu for dessert. The prices were reasonable for the amount of food I ordered, and the order was completed quick and efficient. Well I was waiting I was even given a soda to drink which was very nice.
So now on to the food. Not sure what type of day I was having before or even if the food has gone through massive improvements, but the whole meal start to finish was absolutely delicious. The Meatball Poppers were delectable and heavenly. The pizza had a nice thin crust and had a great taste that left you wanting more. Even the Tiramisu was great!
I would highly recommend this place for a quick bite or a nice family dinner. The staff is friendly and neighborly and the menu items are all made healthy high quality products and best of all the owners value customer service and opinions and take them to heart. Thanks for allowing me to take a second look Jonathan!1 Previous Review: Show all »

I don't live anywhere near Needham, but whenever I am anywhere near there I hightail it over to the Stone Hearth. I like pizza but most places don't thrill me. This place is really unique in that it offers gluten free and wheat crust options, and has local, fresh, sustainable/organic ingredients. Fresh Fresh Fresh can't be stressed enough. Lots of unusual topping choices too, that makes me really happy. I've had a few "goat cheese, zucchini, squash and scallion" pizzas there and it was really satisfying. They usually offer 3 stromboli special choices and those are really good. My picky daughter likes to dip her pieces into the bowl of sauce.
My only issue with this place is the service is reaaaaaaalllllly slow. It doesn't seem to matter if the place is quiet or packed, it's still slow. I'm not too sure why, but I wish they would fix that. I'm not looking for "fast food" by any means, but this is a very kid friendly place, and kids don't typically deal well with leisurely dining. -

Stone Hearth Pizza is great for what it aims to be-a family restaurant that focuses on using local, sustainable ingredients. I like the food here, particularly the BBQ Chicken Pizza. However, this restaurant could be so much more if it improved its poor, unreliable service. On my first visit, a late lunch with only 4-5 other customers in the room, our server essentially disappeared after bringing out our order. I had to flag him down just to get our waters refilled and then again so we could get the bill. My second visit, at dinner, also included poor service. After getting seated, our server didn't show up until five minutes later. Once our food arrived, she was very good about keeping our drinks filled, but we all had the sense that she was really overworked, based on the way she was dashing around the place.
With better training of its staff, I think Stone Hearth may realize its potential as a healthy, gourmet restaurant that just happens to family-friendly. -

Four stars from this thin wheat crust fan.
The salads and antipasti were all very fresh and well flavored, and came out quickly along with drinks. It was good to see some tasty local beers including Peaks Organic, and the berry iced tea was very good as well.
The pizza was the really great thing though, super thin wheat crust was crisp without being dry or hard. And the special pizza paired tender clams with smokey bacon ... mmm bacon.
Service has been prompt and friendly, although every every time I've been there has been during off hours. Very good casual gourmet pizza sit-down restaurant (or take away), without the feeling of a sub shop. -

+ Use of local organic as much as possible
+ Breadth of menu
+ Clean, comfortable
+ Taste, temperature
- Service adequate but should be better (one visit for lunch and not busy)

I'm not quite sure what all the excitement's about.
There's lots of talk about local produce, but it doesn't translate into wonderful food. Not that it's bad, just not great. Slightly underseasoned, flavors muted.
Very kid friendly. Not so good for a quiet meal for two. Service was friendly and attentive.
Prices are moderate. Plenty of parking. -

Great pizza, but confused service. Have been there twice (both takeout) and both times they've messed up our order.
I know they're new and also very nice - hopefully they'll get their act together soon. -

I am a happy girl!
The best gluten free pizza I have tasted since I found out I need to eat gluten free.
I had the sausage with hot peppers. In contrast to Mozzarellis in NYC and NEBO in Boston, this pizza is the best! Delicious crispy crust, very thin, with great sauce. A pleasure! Also, a boat load less expensive than NEBO.
The pizza is round, in contrast with Mozzarellis (which is thin Sicilian style rectangle pizza).
Also had "poppers" very flavorful meatballs. Yummy!
Dinner for 2 was $20, comparable dinner at NEBO was about double.
I can't wait to try it again -

You want an awesome gluten free pizza? This is your place! Not only that, but they have a bunch of other gluten-free options on the menu, all clearly labeled & very yummy.
Can I tell the crust is gluten-free? Yes, but it's decently close & I fully enjoyed my pizza & spicy meatball appetizer (also GF)! -

So, I ate here with a friend last night. We each got 12" pizzas -- he got the sausage and onion, I got "The Bean" -- and I was happy with the pizzas. My spinach was notably fresh, the flavors were there, and I was glad to be supporting a restaurant that focused on sustainability in its business model. We each had a beer. I found the crust a little bit too soggy. You had to eat it folded, or with a fork and knife. Pretty good. Not great.
And then I slept on it, and I realized something about this place: there were a lot of families there, with lots of little kids. Stone Hearth Pizza is a family restaurant. A family restaurant focused on local, sustainable ingredients.
Just like... um... wait. Holy CRAP. Who the hell else is doing that?
Honestly, no one. I can't think of another place like that.
I had this shocking flash that if I had kids and lived in the area, I have absolutely no idea whatsoever where I would take those kids for a meal out. I only patronize restaurants that are heavily focused on sustainability (or else I'll get a vegan option), and I'm certainly going to raise my kids that way. But there is almost no one who is giving families that option in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Kids can eat well, and parents can eat well (and drink, too!).
Stone Hearth Pizza does that. I now have approximately one thousand times more appreciation for what they're doing, and I think that they've struck gold with this idea. Kids desperately -- DESPERATELY -- need to be instilled with positive, healthy attitudes and perspectives on food from an extremely early age, and I think that Stone Hearth is part of a revolution that is (I hope) trying to do just that.
Kudos, guys. And good luck. I love the format of this place now, and if I had kids, THIS would 100% be my go-to place. -
Review from Ellen C.
I really enjoyed the pizza, and the salt bread that you can order for a few extra dollars. The bread was just interested because it wasn't the typical bread you find at a restaurant, and was tasty, too.
The pizza itself was a bit expensive, but for goat cheese and red peppers I'm willing to pay a bit of a premium. Nice atmosphere, calm, and good for talking.
I was there at lunch, and I think lunch is probably the ideal time to go.
Okay, owner contacted me and it prompted me to re-review and add a star based on everything I've done since and how I've been rating. I want to be consistent =) (the owner was very nice, nor said anything to ask me to change the review- just made me realize that given my other reviews, this definitely deserve four) -

Very nice place for a quick and delicious lunch!
Nice location, very friendly staff, big dining room, diverse menu, fresh ingredients, good potion size, and fair prices. How could it get any better?
The chicken bianco sandwich was warm, crunchy, and had a great flavor with the tomatoes and artichokes. Would return any time! -

Great place! Even their sodas do not have high fructose corn syrup :)
The pizzas are tasty and a great value. Thin crust, which I like, makes for a lighter pizza. Lots of families and kids during the weekday lunches, but it's still a nice atmosphere to meet with friends.
A great addition to Needham! They do also serve wine and beer on tap! -

We typically get takeout from SHP. It's usually pretty good. The crust is very thin....I am from NY, and like a thicker crust, not quite sicilian, but something with some substance to it.
I "dined-in" today for the first time. Ambiance was nice, definitely kid/family friendly. Service was ok. I got a 12" pizza with sausage. It was good, not great. the pizza bread app was very good. Looks like they have some decent beers on tap. -

Variety, Variety and More Variety (Rinse and Repeat)
Isn't it nice when pizza is something more than the usual greasy slab of "ding-dong" delivery trinity of thin crust-mozzarella-red sauce? That's the pleasant topline of Stone Hearth.
Be forewarned, this is going to take some time. First, look around. The oven is brick. Local microbrews on tap. Iingredients are local and organic, and they're gluten-free, too. All good. Now open the menu.
To paraphrase Huxley, the selection is vast, beautiful and appalling.
Two crusts, couple of sizes, a dozen cheeses, dozen meats, dozen veggies, and dozen 'other' toppings, make for a decision matrix that would squeeze the eyeballs outta Robert McNamara. Or Spock.
Someone should code an iPod app to generate Stone Hearth pizza choices. It'll sell.
It's all good, however, including the salads and other entrees, as well as those microbrews and generous dollops of wine. Just don't be in a hurry. -

Aside from this place being filled with families and children... it was awesome! Generally, my roommate and I try to stay away from such family friendly establishments, but this place truly wowed us. The kids were kept quiet and entertained by probably amazing parents, the crayons, and super fast service. Our meal was delicious, quick, and healthy. Who knew that was even possible?!?! They claim the food is organic..and if it was ...it was super tasty for being that good for you. The natural sodas were a hit for us, yeah Cherry Vanilla! The Caesar salad was crisp and fresh with not too much dressing, perfect. The margarita pizza was so freakin good! We almost wanted to get two. Our server was friendly and attentive...honestly, this place is so worth it. And did I mention...it wasn't pricey at all! Hooray!

I am a longtime resident of Needham. I regard Stone Hearth as my primary lunch and often dinner spot. The menus is not extensive, but nobody does salads, pannini, and certain pasta dishes any better. I especially like the Caesar salad (lightly dressed), and the Chicken Bianco sandwich. The macaroni and cheese can't be beat, and they make a chicken and spinach dish in a white cheese sauce that is superb. The waitstaff and chefs are very friendly. The prices are reasonable.

WOW.....We had the most amazing pizza tonight. My husband and I both agreed that we had never had a better pizza!! It was called the Farm Fresh pizza which had garlic oil, roasted cherry tomatoes, charred red/yellow peppers, Yukon gold potatoes, artichoke hearts, green/black olives, fresh mozzarella, topped with salad of arugula, red onion & prosciutto~ Amazing take out dinner....healthy (hopefully).
I have only had a salad & a soup prior to this takeout and it was good enough but I must rave about this Pizza! -

Usually had good luck here - but last night was not so good. Monday's is kids night, and kids meals used to be free - now they're half-price. My "special" tomato salad was simply grape tomatoes with some feta and dressing - very overpriced for what little it was. The BBQ chicken pizza elicited a complaint of not enough BBQ sauce from my daughter, and she was right.
We'll try again, but I'll be a little more leery next time. -

First off the pizza tasted great but I want to be specific on what one can expect.
1. The description of the Pizani is misleading, and the warm bread was not warm. Think wrap and nothing like a pannini or calzone.
2. My "create your own" was sparse on toppings compared to my friends' specialty pizzas.
I asked for broccoli and cherry tomatoes on wheat. On each slice of pizza I counted approx. 3 florets of broccoli and 1/2 cherry tomato. Not nearly the covering of toppings my friend with the bacon and bleu cheese got, or my friend with peppers and sausage.
3. The Stone Hearth Pizza dough was fantastic but soggy in the middle, leading all us to agree it could have cooked longer.
4. The cheese was super greasy, I did the napkin blot and the folded crust to release my slices of the grease.
Stone Hearth Pizza definitely has some of the better pizza I have tasted in the area. Its very famiy friendly as well. We will return. -

This is a great place to get a delicious personal size pizza. The whole wheat crust is highly recommended and my fiance thinks the gluten free crust is phenomenal. If you are gluten free make sure you call ahead to verify that the restaurant hasn't sold out of the gluten free crust for the day. While the prices may be a little steep for a small pizza, the ingredients are fresh and organic and the taste is worth the price.

I have gone to this restaurant a few times. It is very kid friendly and the food is fairly good. However, they screw up orders. Last Sunday, I was eating out with my son, husband, and another family. We had two three year olds with us. I ordered food for my son and then an adult mac and cheese for myself. Well, they brought me a kids mac and cheese, which I am sure a child would like, but it was just a plate of cheese and pasta. I guess I could have made a bigger deal about it, but with two 3 year olds, there is only so long we can sit at the table. I left wondering why I spent money on something I could have put together in my microwave. Everyone else enjoyed their food and they accommodated two noisy kids.
A few months prior, my pizza arrived with a piece of bacon, even though I made it clear I was a vegetarian. Maybe the wait staff has to listen a bit more. -

good food.....very bad service.......was there last night and for the third time straight, my appetizer arrived AFTER my entree. I even ordered the app first and asked the waitress to come back in 5 minutes for the rest of the order (since it had happened twice before)!!!
If you can tolerate the bad service, you'll enjoy the food.
