Review from Jason H.
San Francisco, CA
Well, I said I'd be back here...
So those Chippewa engineers I bought lasted 1.5 years. I am hard on boots. To be honest, they were pretty poorly made and I wouldn't really recommend them to anyone, unless you are just wearing them once in a while. Anyway, the poor quality has nothing to do with this shop. These guys are great.
I came back here to get a custom pair of Wesco Engineer boots. They were extremely nice and helpful and the boots I ordered are by far the best boots I have ever owned and were well worth the wait.
Thanks again!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Great selection of boots and help to figure which are best. I was lucky with the pair I purchased but where was the foot measurement equipment? For boots of this quality and price...you want to be sure your fit is as good as it gets.

Best damn boot shop in SF, hands down. They also have quality used boots for sale and offer custom ordering of boots as well.

Walking in here made me wish I was one of those weirdos who got aroused by boots. Instead, I'm one of those utilikilt wearing weirdos who wanted a pair of steel toes to go with my unbifurcated garment. And I found just the pair at Stompers.
Before I came here I had done some online research and had a pair of boots in mind already. However, the knowledgeable and helpful staff showed me a pair which fit even better, and, $200 later, I walked out in my new kicks.
Unfortunately, after a few weeks, the steel plate on the sole of the shoe protruded into my foot and hurt like hell. I called Stompers and they said that the boot must be defective. They immediately ordered a new pair for me and the exchange was easy.
Five stars for the enormous selection, ample street parking, and most important of all, amazing service. -
Review from Scott S.
Stompers was recommended to my partner who needs a brace for his ankle and told construction boots would be good for additional support. So off we went to see the wide selection of boots at Stompers.
Who knew there were boots that go practically to your waist? (Yes, I lead a sheltered life.) There are also many other varieties of boots, most involving lots and lots of lacing. While my partner pondered what would be right for him, a pair of classic Durango boots without laces caught my eye. Guess who bought some boots? Yes, me. Jason, the salesperson, was spot on with his recommendation and quite knowledgeable about all the styles and makes of boots.
He was also quite kind in putting a pair of boots that my partner liked on hold until the brace is ready. He told us that that particular style sells out regularly and it takes 2-3 months to get new stock.
These are high quality boots, so expect to pay accordingly. There is a section of the store with discontinued brands and special orders that were never picked up with discounted prices.
So, if you're looking for a good pair of boots, or have a boot fetish, Stompers is THE place to go. -

Great selection of boots, probably both appealing to fetishy folk as well as to the more practical minded. I was in simply to find a good pair of boots that I'd feel comfortable wearing both on the motorcycle as well as around the office. And for ass kickin'. Can't forget the ass kickin', no sirree bob.
I was able to score a nice pair of tac boots for under $100 that aren't going to be as safe as my Sidi Vertigos on the bike, but will be much better than my old Doc Martins. -

Upwards of four years ago, a new friend took me and some friends here, because who doesn't like shoe shopping?
My particular flavor of shoe is leather with a 1.5-2" lift/heel, steel toe, 9 to 12 hole lace, and preferably steel shank'ed and with quick zipper. These are a bitch to find, especially since zippers on boots tend to break after about a year of use.
I found exactly what I'd been searching for, and I've worn them about 360 days a year since. They're still holding up great.
What's this got to do with Stompers? Aside from the fact that they sold me the boot of my dreams, when I had a minor problem with the outer-tongue (detachable and replaceable, where the zipper is), I called them up and they knew exactly what I needed. A month or so later, I arrived in the shop, and they were as friendly and knowledgeable as you could hope for in customer service. They didn't have any spares on hand, so rather than let me leave empty-handed, they took the outer-tongue off another pair they had in stock.
Maybe in another four years, these boots will have finally given up the ghost. At that point, Stompers will be the first place I'll look for another pair. -

Short of it:
If you want leather boots, this is the place to go.
Long of it:
This April I took the MSF motorcycle training class.
Class requires boots.
I have none.
Boots must be found in a hurry.
After going to 6 shoe stores in SF and Palo Alto, the consensus was:
"I'm sorry, boots are out of Season."
WTF.
a) California doesn't have seasons.
b) Even if it did, boots are _always_ in season.
So yelp it was, and within a few minutes I was off to Stompers. And
within a few more minutes, I had a reasonable set of boots, for a
decent price, and all was well. Which is exactly how these things
should work.
Downsides? Very few. The only complaint is that their motorcycling
gloves are rather meh; on the bright side, they work quite well as
driving gloves. Yes. I have driving gloves. Please stop laughing. -

I bought them a couple years ago, and I tell ya they are the best freaking boots ever!!!! so damn comfortable! I wore them on a ride today, and forgot to take them off - they feel that good.
Excellent service - great prices.... Thanks again...

Had a really annoying experience with these guys.
I went to Stompers back in September based on the great reviews on here but did not get what I needed - or, indeed, what they promised me.
I just wanted a pair of Frye ladies boots. "No problem!", says Jason, "find the pair you want and I'll get them for you at a really good price! Shop with us, we'll get you the best deal anywhere!"
"Great!" I say.
So I go and check online and try some on in Nordstrom, then email Jason with the style and size I want.
No response.
Then I wait and wait and email and call a few more times and finally he gets back to me.
He says that he spoke to Frye and can get the boots for $70 less than the website price. I'm a student and spending $$$hundreds on boots is a huge investment for me.
So I think, "Great!" and email Jason back to order and pay for them.
Silence. More emails. Nothing. Phone calls. No one gets back to me.
Finally I speak with Mike the owner and he apologizes for the delays and says he'll sort it. So he goes back to Frye and the boots are now not 'stock that Frye can supply to Stompers.' But, Mike suggests, I can go on Fry's website and buy them at full price.
Um, i could have done that in the first place - if I wanted to pay full price. I went with Stompers specifically because Jason promised me a great deal.
I then emailed Frye direct and they blew me off and told me they wont supply them to Stompers and don't know why Jason promised me the boots at that price.
So, it's almost November. I still have no winter boots.
And I will never deal with Stompers ever again.
ZERO stars. -

I bought my first pair of real boots here about a decade ago and have always returned for more (not that my originals wore out - I just found myself needing another pair for another reason).
The shop catered to me (straight, regular guy) even though it looked (on first blush) like it might not .
The owner has helped me as have members of his staff - all with respect. I've gotten advice about what to buy, how to care for my purchase and where to get repairs when I've needed resoling.
And now, I've just learned they do consignment sales and accept PayPal! What could be better?
Great shop - I'm a fan of buying local and I'm glad I can. -

I bought custom fit WestCo boots about 9 years back. I had some wear, new soles, dog bite, and stitching to repair. Sent in for the rebuild. Now the boots fit better than original and look great! I also bought a pair of Chinese engineer boots to wear while waiting on the rebuild. Those have been like slippers - very comfortable and very reasonably priced. I switch between the two but the WestCo boots are bullet proof. I wear them all day and love the feel. This shop is great - they know boots. You must visit and buy from the local experts.

A great little boot store in the SOMA, these guys know what they are doing & the service is very good.
Would be helpful if they posted the hours they are open & a phone number some where on the front of the store or door. -

An amazingly wide selection of every type of boot imaginable can be found in this hole-in-the-wall shop. You can find terrific deals in the clearance section, with a number of selections marked down to less than $100. Excellent service is matched by the outstanding quality of the merchandise . . . boots I purchased here ten years ago are still in perfect condition, so even at full price, these are a bargain.

Had been looking so forward to going here but found the most indifferent service possible and none of my three choices in my size.
Was made to feel unwelcome, and I'm a gay guy in jeans and old boots, so don't know who this guy was thinking would be worthy of decent attention.
Now, rather than support local small business, looks like I'll be shopping on-line. -

Stompers is an icon as well as a legend. I've been a customer for 8 years. I've ordered quite a few custom Wesco Lineman,Motorcycle boots. Being in law enforcement, They have the best price on motor officer boots, Dehner's. The best help and experience anywhere i've been with custom fit boots.

A great selection of boots (including half-sizes), of course, but what you're going there for is the service. The fella who works the counter was able to tell just by listening if I had the right fit of boot when I put it on, and when we got the right size he knew it right away. Actually a very large selection (be sure to see the one-offs in the back) for such a small store, a lot of engineer and harness boots - check out http://www.stompersboo.../ first for a good overview.

These guys are laid back and knowledgeable. I give them extra props for carrying Sendras (my personal fave)- I just picked up a pair of Mad Dogs today ($300, and WORTH EVERY PENNY). They have very reasonable prices, and a wide selection of biker and laced boots. They also do customization in the back. My only question is, why the chaps?

Almost 10 years and who the hell knows how many pairs of boots later I still can't get enough. From my first pair of 36" tall Wesco boots to the ones I wear daily, all measured by Mike at Stompers. It's definitely worth the wait for a custom pair. But on those occasions I JUST had to have a new pair they always came through.

Where should I start? The excellent customer service oriented guys working there? or perhaps the great selection of boots available? What about great prices? People, if you want to get the best boots ever AND make your money worth it, go to Stompers in SF!

so, in these days of sneakers and i don't know what, it's hard to find a good pair of boots that aren't made for sport bike racers, or the more feminine types. the staff is fairly nice even though i'm not a hunky leather boy, and the prices are reasonable in the world of cool black leather boots. in the back, there is a clearance section where i have in the past found a really cheap pair that is conveniently in my size - it helps to have big feet, i think. also available are leather police-style riding gloves, shoe polish/care accessories, socks, etc.

Professional, courteous, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, low key, attentive, considerate and fair. The owner Mike, Jason, Spike and the rest of the staff are great, they want to make sure you get what you're looking for, satisfied with your decision and give you the same attention whether you're buying boots that are $60 or $600. The number of boots that they fit in a small area can be intimidating but if you check out their website before you go and take your time to look around you'll be fine.
