I am absolutely in LOVE with this place! They have everything from ice cream, cookies, and brownies to truffles, cupcakes, and all sorts of mouthwatering pastries.
I've only tried their ice cream, the salted caramel pecan, which seemed to be the most popular flavor on yelp. And it didn't disappoint. As an ice cream fanatic, I usually get my desserts in a medium or large. But at Stogo, they fill your cup way past the brim, so I ended up satisfied with a small. My friend had the creamsicle, which was okay; and my other friend had the chocolate hazelnut, which was good as well. But the salted caramel pecan was out of this world. I can't wait to go back to try the other flavors!
Stogo is not just good for a vegan ice cream place. It's probably the best place for ice cream in general, period. The whole organic, cholesterol free, no artificial flavors or preservatives...etc. are just an added bonus. The interior is spacious, unlike Lula's Sweet Apothecary, and the way they have their ice cream displayed - with all the colors and fresh fruits on top - is definite eye-candy.
I'll probably get the ice cream sandwich next time to sample their cookies and gazillion pints of ice cream of all the flavors to pig out at home. The best part is, unlike regular ice cream, I won't feel guilty or bloated afterward.
Salted Caramel Pecan
That's where it all started.
I'm sitting up on a Tuesday night waaay up in Washington Heights just thinking about it. It's so close. And yet so far.
In my musings, I sometimes imagine it dressed up in a cone. Other times I'll picture a little coating of chocolate drizzled along the topmost hump. However I choose to dream about, it's there. And I freakin hate vegan shit.
Put that in your pipe and digest it with ease.
I'm very lucky to be only mildly lactose-intolerent and also not a celiac. I think if I were either or both, I would die. Alas, my friend Ting IS lactose-intolerent and thinks she may be a celiac! O_o Oh no!
So, after dinner, we made our way over here with our newly befriended communal table-mates, who tipped us off about this place, for dessert. None of us had tried it, so we were all in for a treat (or not...) Luckily, it was actually good! I didn't miss the cream or eggs or anything. Shocking!
Comparatively, my favorite ice cream flavor is Baskin-Robbins' mint chocolate chip. And seeing that they had mint chocolate here, I had to try it - doesn't disappoint. I was tempted to get that, but decided on a medium size with the salted caramel pecan and the chocolate almond joy. Too bad you could only get one flavor in a small. The medium was way too big and I was way to full to even finish.
Also available - Fine & Raw chocolates, Babycakes cuppies, vegan hot chocolate, gluten-free cones. Drop by and give it a try. If I hadn't know previously that it was a vegan and gluten-free place, I would've thought it was the real thing...
Stogo is a NO-GO for me. Textures were odd and grainy. Way too sweet. If I was lactose intolerant, I would rather take a pill. For more reviews visit my blog.
Yum, Yum, Yum is all I have to say.......it's my heaven away from home. I have been here a few times and since it's close to my Tuesday night Spanish classes at Cooper Union, I have made it a ritual to make a visit here for dinner.
Yes, the price is a bit higher, but you get a high quality product. I've tried the Salty Caramel with the *new* Spicy Pumpkin - sublime! My brother had Mexican Chocolate with the Coconut Vanilla Bean. He said it was very good (I tried a bite), but it was very spicy. He needed a glass of water with the ice cream. Not complaining at all though.
I wish there was one in Astoria close by me.......actually, no I don't, then I would eat there all the time and be as big as a house!
There's a lot of competition between ice cream, gelato and frozen yogurt in the City. Enter vegan ice cream. They're like the underdogs and they're slowly creeping up in popularity.
Stogo is often compared to Lula's Sweet Apothecary. Aside from both being vegan, the two are like polar opposites. Lula's is more like soft serve. Stogo's is more like... bread. Bread? Think of french toast or a brioche bun. The texture of the ice cream at Stogo is in a world of it's own. It's not runny. It doesn't look like it will melt. It looks so solid that I was slightly afraid of spending $5 on it. I wasn't even sure if you could call it ice cream. Fear not, once this ice cream hits your tongue, it's smooth sailing. Stogo ice cream is like Dippin Dots. Seems a bit weird but when you taste it, yup it's ice cream. But not ice cream in the conventional sense. I equated my experience more to like eating newly baked oatmeal cookies or a cinnamon bun. Same satisfaction.
I sampled a few flavors and settled on the bananas foster and salted caramel pecan. It was an excellent pairing. The salted caramel pecan became a bit sweet at the end but the pecans were a nice touch. The bananas foster was AMAZING complete with banana slices. It was like bread pudding, flambeed bananas, and banana bread rolled into one. It was so good.
Stogo has a lot going for them. It's organic, vegan, kosher and with no preservatives. It also boasts to have zero cholesterol and 1/2 the fat of regular ice cream. They offer babycakes baked goods and pretty exquisite chocolate and truffles. The $4 truffles seemed pricey. For $1 more, go for two flavors of ice cream. If only the service was as sweet, I'd give Stogo five stars.
The maple walnut hemp ice cream is the closest I'll ever get to smoking pot. Yummy exhilaration without the hallucinations. Seems this place will make anything out of ice cream but milk. I also recommend the coconut vanilla made of coconut milk and the chocolate hazelnut made of soy. Skip the red velvet cake ice cream made of spelt. Come on people, really? WHEAT? The texture on the tongue is skin-crawling. I guess that could be good for Halloween. Dig a spoon into that red gooeyness and you can pretend you're a flesh-eating zombie.
My friends recently recommended Stogo. I stopped in tonight for a late treat and instantly fell in love....location, flavor selection, taste, ambiance....I will definitely be revisiting.
Stopped by with my boyfriend for an after dinner treat. I was very impressed with my first visit to Stogo. I had the coconut almond joy flavor which was delicious. Customer service was great and I really felt that I was getting a high quality and tasty product.
My only complaint would be that the the price is a bit steep, but I do realize that it reflects the quality and expense of the ingredients utilized here. I will definitely return, I have to try the Salted Carmel flavor!
Little known fact: this shop is actually co-owned by actress Kyra Sedgwick's (Kevin Bacon's wife) brother. I should had known better, non-dairy ice cream??!! This was definitely not for me. To appreciate the icecream and sweets, either have lactose intolerant symptons or simply switch to a vegan diet. The ice cream was so watered down, it was like eating flavored slush. The cupcakes were extremely dry and lack sweetness. The staff was friendly and gave out samples to try and get feedback. I had better ice cream and cupcakes in my life. This was definitely not it.
what could possibly improve a sunny, unseasonably warm NYC day? organic, dairy-free, low fat pumpkin pie ice cream! the peanut butter fudge wasn't too shabby either. but is it just me or is ice cream really expensive in nyc?
The Banana's Foster Stogo vegan ice cream is to die for. It is a tasty dessert and I love the fact that its sweet, delicious, and fulfilling without making a lactard like myself feel bloated, ill, and congested. I am not vegan, but I love Stogo because it provides me with a non lactose alternative to eating dairy without missing out on the wonder of frozen dessert. Its not as sinful and exciting as some creamy buttery soft-serve but it is tasty and heavenly all the same!
I tried the red velvet and it was very much like its namesake, but I was full from lunch, so I went with what I thought would be a lighter flavor: coconut chocolate. Disappointedly, there was no coconut flavor at all.
A small cup was already too much for a single serving. If only they'd allow two flavors for a small, I might have enjoyed finishing it more.
Minimum $10 purchase for credit card use. They carry Fine&Raw chocolate and cupcakes from Babycakes!
A+ all around.
I love the location, I love the staff, and I love love love the frozen desserts. They also have fudge and truffles that are out of this world, you can take the ice cream home in pints.
For those bay area ex-pats this is the answer to the hole in your heart that Maggie Mudd left.
Perfect accompaniment to seeing a film near union square.
vegans and non vegans alike that I bring with me are always impressed. I wish they had a williamsburg location. StoWo?
They discontinued their soft serve, which I never tried. Whoops!
Ah, the disaster that is lactose intolerance. Just imagine trying to enjoy a warm summer's day without the cooling refreshment of an ice cream cone. It is truly a depressing thought...or at least it was until Stogo opened in the East Village.
Sure you can purchase earthy-flavored, fatty soy ice cream, but the taste is definitely distinguishable from what the smooth treat should really be about. Stogo uses hemp, coconut milk, and even soy-based products to compose their blends, but the difference is barely perceptible and much more reminiscent of traditional ice cream. They pride themselves on organic, dairy-free, all-natural ingredients, and, boy, is that motto reflected in their treats!
The spacious, clean shop offers various seats at a counter along the window. The staff is friendly and eager to please, insisting on multiple samples to help you in your quest for frozen dessert pleasure. While some flavors entice with more boldness than others, each is deliciously unique. The Chocolate Coconut and Mint Chocolate Chip are light and full of natural flavoring. The Red Velvet Cake tastes more similar to a vanilla birthday cake than the chocolate-based ingredients that should be invoked by this recipe, but it is fantastically sinful nonetheless. The Salted Caramel Pecan
is by far the best flavor, providing a puckering mouthful of sweetness.
If you can peel your eyes away from the tantilizing, colorful display case of ice cream, your mouth will continue to water at the sight of vegan cupcakes (courtesy of Babycakes NYC), dairy-free truffles, and more.
Stogo is a terrific find that will hopeful spread throughout the city, the state, the country...! Sorry, I apologize, but these are the ravings of an ice cream-deprived madwoman!
You had me at creamsicle.
I'm not vegan nor am I lactose intolerant, but I decided to come upon this little place just because. The ladies here are awfully friendly and they offer you samples before you order so you don't regret what you get. Everything looked delightful to me. From mango sorbet to pomegranate chocolate chip. Difficult choice, but creamsicle won my heart. I had a small which came out to $5.60. A tad pricey for ice cream but hey it's non dairy.
I tried Stogo today. I am not a vegan, but I do enjoy alternative frozen treats. I got a small coffee ice cream, which was expensive at $4.50 but generously sized.
This is the worst ice cream I have ever tasted. It was so bad I couldn't eat more than about three spoonfuls and unfortunately for me, the aftertaste lingered.
Having been to Lula's Sweet Apothecary (also vegan ice cream) I have to say that it is VASTLY superior, even if some flavors over there are a little weird.
So skip Stogo.
Stgo has put into a store products of high quality with the theory developed by some of the healthiest countries. I am tempted to give it 4 stars because when I asked about specific ingredients, the guy was clueless and didn't make much attempt to find out. I did buy 4 truffles (came out to $20), and although the taste wasn't bad, the concept of them being organic, Kosher, and with no animal products gets them 5 stars.
I *heart* Stogo.
Yum.
I thought I was in love with Lula's...but yeah- this place has the most amazing ice cream. Like every bite is 'holy crap this is good' good.
Try it. Unfortunately I like the product here better than at Lula's...but nothing beats Lula's customer service and atmosphere.
dairy-free, AND gluten free treats?! this is my new happy place! i found the service to be impeccable, as our group of 4 was offered sample after sample before ordering. the flavors are as good as could be, and even my 3 dairy-fiend friends concurred they didn't miss the dairy.
the mexican spiced chocolate did garner a bit of a kick towards the end, but was perfect mixed with another flavor. likewise, the salted pecan caramel packed a sweet punch, but combined with another flavor, perfectly luscious. the plethora of coconut flavors was nice too; the toasted coconut almond joy was quite joyful indeed.
sadly, no cones, but you can create your own ice-cream cookie sandwich. a small cup=1 flavor scoop, medium=2 flavor scoops, and large=3 flavor scoops.
i almost can't wait for cold weather to try the hot chocolate, truffles, and cupcake treats! until then, i'll be gorging myself on triple scoops...thank goodness the stuff happens to also be lower in fat, sugar, and choloesterol free.
I'm the furthest thing from a Vegan there can be. I chomp meat regularly and I enjoy the hell out of dairy products, but when I saw this place's cute store front and claims of less fat, no refined sugar, vegan ingredients etc. I was enticed to try it. The interior is spacious and you're greeted by a courteous staff with a wide range of ice cream flavors and some cupcakes (they appeared nearly out when we went). A counter with several chairs faces outward, giving you a nice view to people watch (which in the East Village can be quite fun on a sunny day).
While I agree with other reviews that the price is a bit high for ice cream, the vegan nature of the product and the sheer amount they give you in a small is insane. Other places give you only half as much in a small, but theirs took my girlfriend and myself to finish.
I had the Mexican Spice Chocolate ice cream. It is infused with chili flavor but has a wonderful dark chocolate taste to it. The sweetness of the chocolate hits you first, creamy and rich and then suddenly the spice *hits* you as a secondary flavor. The combination is wonderful but not for those who don't like spice!
My sisters had the chocolate hazelnut, and man it was awesome. The chocolate was a bit sweeter than mine, and there were nice, tasty hazelnut chunks inside.
I also sampled the Red Velvet but found it a bit dry and it had a bit too much of the "soy taste" to it to be pleasurable, so I'm glad I went with the choices I did.
I recommend trying different flavors before ordering, but I'm definitely a fan of Stogo.
We walked to try to find ice cream sandwiches and was sadden that Ben & Jerry's didn't offer them. Walking up the streets, we passed by Stogo and "Dairy-free" stuck out so we decided to try it out.
I am NOT lactose intolerant but I decided to try this new concept ice cream.
DELICIOUS! This is definitely a go-go. Best thing is that they make their dairy-free ice cream actually taste like real ice cream. Then they also have cupcakes and truffles....hmmmm, it's a dreamy dreamy place....
I could kill Amy G. for never taking me here - it is beyond delicious and I had to find it on my own! With flavors like Salted Caramel Pecan, Chocolate Coconut, Oatmeal Raisin Cookie, and Banana Coconut Mango, I may have to end our friendship as she hides the best things on earth from me (but not from everyone else apparently).
Prices seem pricey but the minute the gooey, non dairy goodness melts in your mouth - you won't care!
.
Mexican Chocolate + Vegan = The Bomb.
You even satisfied my lacto-loving boyfriend.
You gave us your pomegranate chocolate, your caramel pecan and your peanut butter fudge, but didn't leave us with a dairy belly ache. Thank you for being you, Stogo. I think maybe I love you.
Service here leaves something to be desired. The guy who owns the place --and makes the soyce cream-- is a strange one.
However, if you happen to be dating someone who is incredibly lactose intolerant, yet insists on eating ice cream all the time, Stogo is a good compromise. Try the Banana's Foster. The Salted Caramel, while not as flavorful as I'd like it to be, was still quite good.
Love their peanut butter fudge and red velvet (spelt). The pomegranate chip and chocolate fudge brownie ain't bad either, though the latter was way too sweet for my taste.
Sure, the prices are a little steep, but their portions are huge. I just hate the fact that they only allow one flavor in the small sized cups. Really, their portions are so generous that there have been times when I've gotten a little bored of my flavor of the day half-way through.
Not all their flavors are good, but they let you taste as many as you want so it's never really a problem.
The ice cream (Fudge Brownie, Bananas Foster, and Chocolate) was all pretty good, but way too expensive, and I am completely turned off by the attitude of the staff. Bad karma will come back to you, you sad-looking service employees. At least say "thank you" for Christ's sake when you see me give you a dollar in the tip jar.
I'm going to Lula's.
Vegan ice cream.. that's something new!! basically all the ice-cream/dessert this place makes are lactose intolerance friendly.. I'm not sure what does that has to do with Vegan.. anyhow.. it sounds interesting.
I tried 2 favors. strawberry and banana and liked both. you can always try different favor. the place is cute has few chairs facing the window.
I'm not too wild about this place but if you are lactose intolerance. this can be a good place to try out.
Good for lactose-intolerant folk, but not worth the extra $ if you don't have any issues with dairy. Some great soy-based flavors--loved the coconut vanilla bean, and everything I tried still tasted like real ice cream to me.
The staff, on the other hand, always seem surly whenever I've stopped by. Meh.
I love ice cream.
However, I'm lactose intolerant so I don't eat it much. Stogo is a dream come true in my world. Their ice cream is absolutely decadent and they offer TONS of flavors. My favorite so far is the red velvet cake, and its only been there once since we've been there. I've never had anything like it! I'm glad I don't work near there or live near there, because I would be going to Stogo all the time!!!
The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is because it is a little pricey. However, I know that quality dairy-free ice cream is hard to come by, so it's worth it.
Owner has promptly responded and followed up. That's good business, right? Would give it another try at some point.

Wow. What attitude.
My partner is deadly allergic to soymilk. So he always asks when at a place that… Read more »
Being a faithful dairy whore, the thought of dairy-less ice cream is a little bit disconcerting, but Stogo (and the overly-excited counter girl) eased my fears right away. (via as many free samples as you want) The only downfall is you have to listen to the incessant yammering of said counter girl...
When my friend inquired about how the soy-based mint chocolate chip was: "It's horrible. No.... I'M JUST KIDDING - IT'S HORRIBLY DELICIOUS!!" Continuing on, "Do you want to know my favorite flavors?!!" without giving either of us a chance to respond, continues to list off 3/4 of the ice cream. To her credit, after trying a few flavors, they were all great.
I got pomegranate chocolate chip. Heaven. That's all.
this is proper ice cream. I don't usually eat soy ice cream - if a dessert I order happens to have it, i'll get it and usually don't taste a difference except that it may not be as creamy.
But Stogo is SOLID soy ice cream. I got their bananas foster ice cream - they're not stingy with their scoops and the soy ice cream tastes more like Gelato - which means it's creamy decadent and delicious.
I found out that they use agave instead of sugar, which makes everything so much healthier.
Usually when I eat a big scoop of plain normal milk-laden ice cream, my stomach hurts a little and I just feel tired. but with this kind of ice cream, i was satisfied without a stomach ache!
Loved it! They also have coconut milk ice cream for the raw-foodies - but soy has less calories so I'm probably going to stick to that.
I do wish they'd include some almond milk ice cream options though - yum.
If heaven was on earth, and full of the most delicious vegan ice cream, it would be Stogo.
I am a vegan ice cream connoisseur (see profile picture, please). It is my lifes duty to eat my way through life one scoop at a time. I intend to carry this task out at Stogo.
Enough cheesy anecdotes. This place is just awesome. Sorry Lula's, but this place puts you to SHAME. After a trip from San Francisco, I wished that Maggie Mudds would open a location in NYC. I no longer need you Maggie, I'm sorry.
I walked in expecting, like Lulas, for a half-dozen or so flavors. Instead there was a full case with probably 15 choices - sample as many as you like (the oatmeal cookie, bananas foster, red velvet cake, peanut butter fudge, and toasted almond joy were most memorable). The adorable girl working behind the counter also informed me that a soft-serve machine will be up and running as soon as the weather is officially warmer.
There's also a bakery case with Babycakes items, a few jars full of cookies, and a sign about making a customized ice cream sandwich (again, HEAVEN).
So spacious, and frankly, the display of everything is so aesthetically pleasing. Clean and bright, and right across from the church with park benches -- it's going to be fantastic come summer.
I had a massive and decadent "regular" at $5.75 (Yes, it's a little pricey, but I paid $4 something for a soft serve cone at Lula's that was hardly comparable) with peanut butter fudge, and bananas foster. Both were AMAZING. I seriously will be dreaming about this place until I burn off enough calories to return.
If you're vegan, skip Stogo and hit Lula's. The service is warmer, the shop is cuter, and the ice cream, though still vegan, is tastier. I wandered into Stogo and sampled the red velvet, Mexican hot chocolate, mango pina colada, and salted caramel pecan. Not one of them struck my fancy. (Stogo does get points, though, for doling out samples.) I went with a small salted caramel pecan, but only because I lacked the gumption to leave after trying so many flavors. The consistency was all wrong, and I could hear myself chewing through the scoop. I threw out over half of it, an unheard-of gesture from someone who eats ice cream past the point of pain and self-hatred.
I was looking at the ice cream guy at Stogo trying to look like I didn't think he was crazy when he told me "All the textures here have ruined ice cream for me. When I have it all I taste is cream and sugar."
Stogo had definitely not ruined ice cream for me, but it is pretty tasty and I'm sure a great option if you don't or can't do dairy.
I was buying some for a "heart healthy" work event, and the chocolate fudge and chocolate hazelnut were big hit with my health conscious colleagues. You should know, though, that there are other good vegan products that are a bit cheaper. Some store bought carrot cake flavor went just as quickly at our event, and had lots of vitamin A.
Still, Stogo's stuff has great texture. I really noticed that when I was having their Mexican Chocolate, which unfortunately tasted like too much of a mix between the Mexican Hot Chocolate you can make at home and one of those "red hots" candies. Don't worry, though, there are plenty of other good flavors, and the staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and generous with the free samples.
I went here thinking it was just another regular ice cream place that's just pricy. I was really dense not to guess from seeing Babycakes cupcakes on why its expensive. But then, I'm a good sport so I tried the banana forster. The woman behind the counter was really pleasant.
4.60 bucks for a small ice cream is pretty steep. I mean, I should be going to Grom's i'll pay for ice cream. But as I was eating it, I realized that it tasted very clean. Thats when I went, "OH. its not regular milk."
In the end, I just have to say that it tastes normal. I got the banana foster with barely any bananas in it. Sure the serving was huge, the taste was pretty clean but I still feel its over priced. I'm lucky I'm not vegan.
I had a cup of chocolate and coconut vanilla bean ($5.70). The chocolate felt flat in my opinion, but the coconut vanilla bean was rich and creamy and the interplay between the coconut and vanilla produced great results.
All the ice cream here is made of soy, which is fine, but I found it to be a mundane and pedestrian choice compared to nearby Lula's Sweet Apothecary, which makes everything out of nuts, like cashews. The nut-based ice creams are far richer and creamier, in general.
In general, Stogo seems to take the corporate, post-modern approach compared to Lula's. Stogo looks like a glistening cafe from "2001: A Space Odyssey," which is a tired theme in New York, and I found the service to be unhelpful and unfriendly.
I was also deeply disappointed by their lack of compostable utensils, and their decision to use all-plastic stuff which just ends up in the trash. In comparison, Lula's uses only eco-friendly materials and also serves you stuff in actual glass, with metal spoons, just like in the old days.
The prices here are also super-expensive. $5.70 for a scoop of ice cream, really? Many of the flavors here are good, but that's just too expensive. They also wouldn't let me use credit card, as they have a $10 minimum charge (which is illegal, by the way). I found this ridiculous as Stogo has a lot of money and fame behind it (one of the owners is Kyra Sedgwick's brother) and looks to try to compete with the big corporate players; you'd think they wouldn't be so chinzy as to be cash-only for under $10.
I appreciate that Stogo is vegan, so come here to try some samples; but if you're looking for a friendlier environment with an innovative product, go to Lula's Sweet Apothecary instead.
I worked a few blocks from Stogo, and found myself going there almost every day. So I moved to Rhode Island before things got out of hand. Thanks Stogo!! (;
I've been vegan over 21 years, but that doesn't mean I lost my taste buds in the process. Stogo understands this. They also get that offering about six different variations on chocolate makes perfect sense; it's like the (fictional) 100 words for snow in Inuit.
My favorite flavors are: chocolate chip cookie, salted caramel pecan, chocolate chip, mint chocolate chip, chocolate hazelnut, and chocolate coconut. (Did I mention I like chocolate?!) I enjoy the texture of the ice cream at Stogo--both the soy- and coconut-based versions. I haven't tried the hemp yet.
While a couple of the staff have been brusque in the past, in general I've encountered friendly, helpful people behind the counter. I love Stogo!!!
Yum! I will definitely be going back to try more flavors. I had a small cup of the Fudge Brownie, which was delicious. It had a cinnamony flavor to it, but was chocolaty and sweet. Yes, it is a bit expensive. And yes, if you want two flavors, you have to get a regular size cup. But, they give you a generous amount, you're consuming quality ingredients, and they will let you try any flavor you want.
